Opis:
Linguistic and Cultural Aspects of Specialised Translation. A Textbook for the Students of Business English is a practical course in translation from English to Polish and from Polish to English. It has grown out of a need to run a course of specialised translation for students of Business English at Częstochowa University of Technology. However, even if this textbook is aimed at this particular group of language and translation students, we believe that this volume has lot to offer to students of translation in other fields. We base our belief in the usefulness of this volume to any translation student on the fact that the primary focus of all chapters is on the question of the language – culture relationship. This relationship is uniquely represented by each individual language and difficult to reproduce in any other language. In other words, this textbook is about translation of culture and culture-bound terms, which poses a perennial problem of translators in all areas of their activity. This volume consists of twelve chapters and has been designed to fit into a standard Polish academic timetable lasting one semester. Some chapters may require more than 90 minutes of seminar time; others are likely to take less time. Generally, the structure of most chapters follows the same pattern. After an exposition of a translational problem, there comes a practice section, in which students are asked to solve the problem. Although each chapter is accompanied with a key, not every exercise is answered; some exercises allow individual students more freedom to provide a solution and others serve as a material for an in-class discussion. The examples used in the book cover a wide range of topics ranging from business proper to film studies, and are tuned to suit the level of beginner translation students.

Opis:
Twelve DNA fragments amplified on templates of Triticum urartu, Aegilops speltoides and Aegilops squarrosa were separated, reamplified and used as digoxigenin-labelled probes. The species and genome specificity of probes was evaluated by Southern dot-blot hybridisation to Triticum durum, the donors of wheat genomes, rye and rye with introgressed wheat chromosome fragments. In comparison to labelled genomic DNA of T. durum, the probes obtained by labelling PCR-amplified fragments exhibited higher specificity to wheat genomes. Under the applied hybridisation conditions all probes showed different degree of cross-hybridisation to rye DNA. Some probes indicated quantitative difference in their specificity to wheat genomes, but generally the intensity of hybridisation to the genomes A, S and D was independent of the origin of an amplified fragment. Selected probes, used in dot-blot hybridisation system together with genomic DNA of T. durum, may increase the sensitivity of screening wheat chromosomal fragments introgressed to rye.

Opis:
Despite senescence-induced chlorophyll depletion in plants has been widely studied, the enzymatic background of this physiologically regulated process still remains highly unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine selected biochemical properties of partially purified fractions of chlorophyllase (Chlase, chlorophyll chlorophyllido-hydrolase, EC 3.1.1.14) from leaves of three Prunus species: bird cherry (Prunus padus L.), European plum (Prunus domestica L.), and sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.). Secondarily, this report was aimed at comparing seasonal dynamics of Chlase activity and chlorophyll a (Chl a) content within investigated plant systems. Molecular weight of native Chlase F1 has been estimated at 90 kDa (bird cherry) and approximately 100 kDa (European plum and sour cherry), whereas molecular mass of Chlase F2 varied from 35 kDa (European plum) to 60 kDa (sour cherry). Furthermore, enzyme fractions possessed similar optimal pH values ranging from 7.6 to 8.0. It was found that among a broad panel of tested metal ions, Hg+2, Fe+2, and Cu+2 cations showed the most pronounced inhibitory effect on the activity of Chlase. In contrast, the presence of Mg+2 ions influenced a subtle stimulation of the enzymatic activity. Importantly, although Chlase activity was negatively correlated with the amount of Chl a in leaves of examined Prunus species, detailed comparative analyses revealed an incidental decrement of enzymatic activity in early or moderately senescing leaves. It provides evidence that foliar Chlase is not the only enzyme involved in autumnal chlorophyll breakdown and further in-depth studies elucidating this catabolic process are required.

Opis:
Plasmapheresis is a medical procedure consists of removal of the blood, separation of cells from plasma, and return of these cells to the body’s circulation by reinfusion. There are therapeutic and preparative plasmapheresis. During therapeutic plasmapheresis, together with the plasma, are removed utoantibodies, immune complexes, antigens, proteins, enzymes and clotting factors or cytokines from the circulation. Preparative plasmapheresis enables the production of the plasma preparations for therapeutic purposes. Plasmapheresis is a safe procedure that poses a little risk of complications, however it should be developed in accordance with all rules and guidelines.
Plazmafereza (plasma exchange – PE) to zabieg, który polega na pobraniu określonej objętości krwi, szybkim jej rozdzieleniu na osocze i elementy komórkowe, które następnie zostają zwrócone drogą reinfuzji. Wyróżniamy plazmaferezę leczniczą i preparatywną. Plazmafereza to bezpieczny zabieg, który stwarza niewielkie ryzyko powikłań, należy jednak przeprowadzać go zgodnie z opracowanymi zasadami i procedurami.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Several studies have reported therapy failures in patients with legionnaires’disease; however, antimicrobial resistance of clinical and environmental isolates of Legionella spp. has not yet been documented. Routine susceptibility testing of Legionella spp. is not recommended because of difficulties in determining standard minimal inhibitory concentration values. The purpose of this study was to analyze the antimicrobial susceptibility of Legionella pneumophila. strains isolated from a water supply system. Materials and method. Twenty-eight isolates of L. pneumophila (16 – L. pneumophila SG 1, 12 – L. pneumophila SG 2–14) obtained from water systems in public buildings in Poland were tested. Susceptibility testing was performed using the E-test method. The tested antibiotic were azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin. The medium used for the susceptibility testing was BCYE-, a special medium for Legionella cultivation. Results. Among the tested strains, L. pneumophila was the only one resistant to azithromycin. It was a strain of L. pneumophila SG 2–14 isolated from the water system in a sanitorium. All isolates were found to be sensitive to ciprofloxacin and rifampicin. However, the azithromycin-resistant strain exhibited higher ciprofloxacin and rifampicin MIC (1.5 μg/ml, and 0.19 μg/ml, respectively). The MIC50 for azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin were 0,032, 0,125, and 0,003 μg/ml, respectively. The MIC90 for azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin were 0,032, 0,125, and 0,003 μg/ml, respectively. Conclusions. Azithromycin resistance was found in one strain of L. pneumophila SG 2–14, but the resistance mechanism is unknown and needs further study. It is possible that therapeutic failures in Legionnaires’ disease may be associated with bacterial resistance which should be taken into account. The antibiotic sensitivity testing described in this study could be helpful in detecting the resistance of clinical L. pneumophila isolates. Ciprofloxacin and rifampicin have good in vitro activity against environmental L. pneumophila SG 1 and SG 2–14 in Poland.
