Opis:
In Central Europe, deforestation led to a reduction of forest area by almost 80%, compared to the original area, by the beginning of the 20th century. At this point in time, a period of intensive reforestation began in an effort to restore forest areas. This process of reforestation, especially on post-agricultural land, continues to this day. This article examines reforestation and natural regeneration on former farmland and the factors that influence the current state as well as the future growth of the forest. Ancient and contemporary views on the functioning of stands on post-agricultural land created by both, natural and forced succession (i.e. afforestation), are recalled. In Poland, this issue primarily concerns managed state forests, which cover an area of over 2 million hectares. We discuss the differences in the development of these stands resulting from the history of agricultural cultivation, the type of afforestation, the influence of environmental factors as well as biotic threats to their development. Furthermore, the need to change the silviculture-, protection- and endowment-based approach to forest management in stands on post-agricultural land is highlighted.

Opis:
This study’s aim was to describe the health condition of Scots pine cultures of up to 10 years old using and comparing various field assessment methods. Since forest districts report on the health of stands annually, we assumed that for a proper health analysis it is necessary to develop a simple and yet reliable assessment method that allows for determining the share of fungal pathogen infection in the stand (both foliar and root pathogens) and their differentiation from symptoms of abiotic factors such as drought. Six different methods of health assessment were tested in selected Forest Districts across Poland. We found that the most reliable assessment of the health condition of young stands is obtained with the surface method “MF” (phytopathological monitoring method) and the linear “Z” method, which uses transects of 30 meters in three rows in the shape of the letter Z.

Opis:
Seedlings produced with a covered root system were intended to be used in the afforestation of ‘difficult’ soils in post−agricultural lands, on post−fire areas, in wastelands, within zones of industrial damage or on mining heaps. It is assumed that the suitable substrate and properly grown seedling ensure a good start for a plant in a new, unfavorable environment. In many forest districts so−called ‘container nurseries’ were established and produced millions of seedlings with a covered root system, including seedlings equipped with mycorrhiza under them, controlled mycorrhization. In recent years, however, more and more often such seedlings are also introduced into forest soils during the renewal of logging or gaps. Phytopathology sees many weaknesses of such an approach. The article indicates potential and actual threats in the production cycle of planting material in containers and after planting trees in cultures.

Opis:
Root−feeding insects are an increasingly studied group of herbivores, whose impact on plant productivity and are some of the most damaging forest pests in Europe. Due to the mass feeding on the roots of seedlings and older trees in young plantation and stands, Melolonthinae larvae are classified as pests, which are the most dangerous on the land dedicated to afforestation. The research was located in the Wyszków Forest District (52°43'15' N; 21°39'03' E) on the mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous forest habitats. This study evaluated sawdust traps as the method for assessing abundance of Melolonthinae larvae in Scots pine plantations established artificially from open nursery, container production, and from natural regeneration. In spring 2015 i) ‘small sawdust pits’ in rows between seedlings, and ii) pits without soil in adjacent inter−rows as control were prepared. In spring and autumn 2016, and in spring 2017 sawdust and soil from both variants of pits were sieved and Melolonthinae larvae were counted and compared. The obtained results were analyzed in two ways. The first analysis compared the occurrence of grubs in small pits with or without sawdust, while the other one analysed influence of the time of making small pits, independently for the variant with or without sawdust. The final stage was to compare the number of Melolonthinae larvae in small pits between the origin of the seedlings. We found a greater number of grubs in spring assessment than in autumn. Both kinds of small pits showed higher number of Melolonthinae larvae when compared to traditional method of ‘great pits’. The number of Melolonthinae larvae was significantly higher on the plots with container seedlings than the others. The conceptual assumptions of this alternative and environmentally safe method of ‘sawdust traps’ seems to be optimistic.

Opis:
Effects of Scots pine wood amendment on the fungal community in forest soil infested with cockchafers and foraged or non-foraged by wild boars and hares were investigated. We hypothesized that sawdust amendment would increase the abundance of entomopathogenic and insect-associated species effective in cockchafer predation. The soil dilution method and morphotyping were used for fungal isolation and identification in order to quantify and qualify the viable components of the microbiota that are important for evaluating soil functions. There was usually increased abundance and decreased diversity of soil fungi one year after sawdust amendment. Application of pine sawdust more often increased than decreased the abundance of some insect-associated fungi or dermatophytes and keratinophilic species and decreased the number of cockchafer larvae. Abundance of Geomyces pannorum, Mortierella spp. + M. luteus, Pseudogymnoascus roseus, Tolypocladium inflatum and Trichoderma koningii increased, at least locally, whilst Chrysosporium merdarium, Penicillium spp. (including the most common P. citrinum, P. daleae and P. janczewskii), Sporothrix schenckii and Trichoderma spp. decreased. Application of pine sawdust under roots of 1-year-old Scots pine seedlings significantly increased the abundance of Phoma + Pyrenochaeta spp. in neighbouring soil, thus increasing the risk from Phoma blight. Trichoderma strigosum was among the dominants (frequency >5%). Another six and two Trichoderma species were among the subdominants (frequency 1–5%) and subrecedents (frequency <1%), respectively. Dermatophytes, coprophilous and keratinophilic species, e.g. Cephalotrichum, Chrysosporium merdarium or S. schenckii, occurred only or mostly in foraged plots. The altered communities resulting from pine sawdust amendment may contribute to biological control of the cockchafer larvae.

A Fibroporia gossypium (Speg.) Parmasto fruit-body was found on a Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] stump in the northeast of Poland (Waliły forest district). The mycelium from wood samples was sequenced (KF725876), identified and used to examine: (i) linear growth of the mycelium on malt-extract medium and (ii) the decay of spruce wood samples. We observed slow mycelium growth (84 mm colony diameter after 28 days). After the first 3 months of wood decay, the average loss of dry mass was 6.7%. After next 3 months, a further loss of 15.4% (the average loss) was recorded until finally 35.98% loss (the maximum loss of wood for a single sample) occurred. Fibroporia gossypium can be considered as a protective biological agent against root rot in threatened Norway spruce stands.

Opis:
Oak decline is insufficiently described problem. Declining oaks are in various age and the most commonly observed symptoms of the disease include growth inhibition and buds mortality. The dieback occurs periodically, mainly because of the impact of abiotic factors (drought, frost and the lowering of the groundwater level). In this complex phenomenon the biological factors, including numerous species of Chromista (Chromalveolata) and fungi play important role as well. The list of pathogens responsible for the dieback includes numerous species of Pythium and Phytophthora, as well as Biscogniauxia, Discula, Pleurophoma, Botryosphaeria and Diplodia. Among other organisms responsible for the oak decline are fungi belonging to Fusarium species. The aim of this study was to investigate the species composition of pathogens colonizing the dying oak buds including undeveloped or dying shoots obtained from Łomża, Rudka and Czarna Białostocka forest districts (eastern Poland). Sampling of symptomatic shoots of Quercus robur L. was performed in 2013, respecting different parts of tree crowns (top, central and bottom). Mycological material for analysis included mycelium growing on dying shoots after incubation in a chamber and tissue collected from symptomatic shoots and placed on PDA medium. For selected isolates of fungi the identification was confirmed by the PCR analysis using ITS1 and ITS4 primers. Among analyzed fungi Fusarium spp., Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Botryosphaeria quercuum and /em>Coniothyrium spp. required special attention. The Fusarium spp. group of fungi dominated with an average frequency of 32%. The molecular analysis revealed the presence of several species including Fusarium avenaceum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Lophiostoma corticola and Nectria mauritiicola.

Number of Melolontha grubs in forest soils reforested with Scots pine (Lubartów A, LA, Lubartow B, LB) and those in post agricultural soils afforested with this species (Swierczyna, SW) were assessed before (autumn 2011, spring 2012) and one year after (2013) planting. At the same time, mortality of seedlings was evaluated on both study sites. Pine sawdust was mixed with soil in rows (treatment T1) or applied under seedling roots just before planting in April 2012 (treatment T2). In May 2013, seedling mortality varied significantly, from 27.5% in LB to 51.0% in LA, whereas the differences between the treatments were not significant. The mean number of Melolontha grubs decreased from 35/0.15 m³ of soil in autumn 2011 to 3/0.15 m³ in spring 2012 and in spring 2013. The differences depended on the site, treatment and grubs spatial distribution in soil. Addition of sawdust did not influence either seedlings, or insects mortality. T2 was more beneficial for Scots pine seedlings growing on agricultural soils, while treatment T1 – for those on forest soils. On the other hand, pine sawdust applied under roots of the seedlings seemed to attract Melolontha spp. grubs.

We analysed changes in soil chemical properties (pH, C:N, N, P, K, Ca, Na) inside two forest areas chosen for renewal (Lubartów A and B) and within one post-agricultural site (OEwierczyna) designated for afforestation with Scots pine. The experimental plots were located in areas known as persistent cockchafer grub spots. The Lubartów A site was not fenced and showed signs of wild boar activity. Analyses were carried out in the autumn of 2011 and spring 2012, prior to pine sawdust application to the soil and before tree planting, respectively, and again one year later in May 2013. Precipitation as well as air and soil temperatures were recorded throughout the experimental period. We found that soil temperature and humidity, determined by changes in weather, differences in soil chemical properties between forest and agricultural sites as well as sawdust treatments differentially affected soil reaction, C:N ratios and nutrient content . In the unfenced area (Lubartów A), the content of nutrient forms available to plants decreased no more under sawdust treatment than under control conditions. In the remaining areas, sawdust treatment caused an increase or no change in soil concentrations of the investigated nutrients. Under suitable temperature and humidity conditions, sawdust can represent a significant source of energy-rich compounds promoting diversified edaphone activity, which appears to be the main reason for changes in soil nutrient content.

On the basis of literature data and own research, algorithms for the calculation of the amount of released CO2 and C per hectare per year were developed taking into consideration 1) the share of trees infected by root pathogens in 80−year−old pine stands, 2) the weight of tree roots, 3) the share of cellulose in the wood of roots and 4) the loss of cellulose degraded by fungi. The developed model after transformations contains only a) the merchantable timber volume of trees per hectare to be harvested based on measurements or SILP database and b) the area of occurrence of fungi causing wood decay in roots and stumps (here: Heterobasidion spp., Armillaria spp. and Phlebiopsis gigantea). These data can also provide estimates of the level of carbon sequestration in the non−infested forest stands.

The changes of N, P, K, Ca and Mg content in Scots pine needles over 4 years of the experiment were estimated in 2 treatments – inoculated in laboratory with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Thelephora terrestris and non inoculated (control). The seedlings were grown in a greenhouse for one season and then planted out into post−agricultural soil. Statistically significant differences were found only for Mg concentration in needles of two−year−old initially inoculated seedlings. For both treatments N and K concentration differed between all analysed years of growth. In the case of P and Ca concentration differences were found neither for treatments, nor for years. Four−year−old inoculated seedlings had lower concentration of all investigated nutrients with the exception of Ca. In both treatments the concentration of nutrients was at optimal level for four−year−old seedlings’ growth. Obtained results suggest that environmental conditions as well as plant metabolism may influence the nutrient concentration in the needles more strongly than their uptake by ectomycorrhizal symbionts on the roots.

Do określenia najsilniej związanych z występowaniem chorób zmiennych pogodowych stosowano analizę korelacyjną i analizę składowych głównych, zaś funkcję zależności pomiędzy występowaniem chorób i wybranymi czynnikami pogodowymi określono przy użyciu analizy regresji wielokrotnej. Dla wszystkich analizowanych chorób stwierdzono silną, statystycznie istotną zależność pomiędzy areałem występowania chorób w danym roku, a różnymi charakterystykami meteorologicznymi z tego samego roku, jak i z lat poprzednich.
The relationship between weather conditions and most important economically infectious diseases of assimilative apparatus of forest trees was investigated for stands up to 20 years old. The analyses were based on data of Scots pine needle cast, twisting rust, shoot dieback, oak powdery mildew occurrence in Poland from the years 1975-2004 and meteorological data from 30 stations located all over the country from the years 1966-2005. There were 130 meteorological parameters of air and soil temperature, precipitation, humidity, synthetic hydrothermal coefficients (in forms of monthly, seasonal, annual and multi-annual means) as well as their deviations from multi-annual averages used in the calculations. To determine most influential for disease occurrence weather variables correlation and principal component analyses were applied, while multiple regression analysis was used to determine the dependence between diseases occurrence and selected weather parameters. For all analyzed diseases statistically significant dependence was found, most pronounced for meteorological parameters of the year of disease appearance as well as from one-two years earlier.
