Opis:
Presence of reinforcement material in the matrix plays a vital role in modifying the fracture topography besides mechanisms of deformation and strengthening of a composite. In the present study, Al-CNT composite was prepared using induction melting technique. The composite was cast into copper mold and cold rolled to ≈95% reduction in thickness. In as rolled condition, the composite exhibited a simultaneous increase in yield strength (>70%), tensile strength (>50%) and hardness (>40%). The fracture surfaces of the broken tensile specimens were studied using scanning electron microscope. It was observed that the crack initiation was occurred in the matrix followed by void link-ups for its growth. Micro cracks initiation in the matrix played a vital role to sustain the ductility of the material.

Opis:
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely used for industrial and aero turbines. The use of residual fuel oil is well known due to economic reasons, which causes hot corrosion. Hot corrosion over extended exposures reduces durability. Therefore, there is a requirement to develop new design approaches for TBCs in order to operate under hot corrosion environment. In this paper, the effect of bond coat thickness on the hot corrosion resistance was studied. Hot corrosion test were carried out in 50 wt.% Na₂So₄+50 wt.% V₂O₅ molten salt at 950°C for 50 hours. The characterizations of the coatings included X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and optical microscope. Results indicated that TBCs with thick bond coat exhibited superior hot corrosion resistance to the TBCs with conventional bond coat.

Opis:
Poor plant stand establishment is a common problem for marigold production. Exposure to seed priming is one of the strategies being used to accelerate the activation of plant growth, especially seed germination in many crops. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of different seed priming techniques on performance of French marigold. For this purpose, different seed priming techniques: hydroprimng, 50 mM CaCl2, 100 mg L⁻¹ salicylic acid and 100 mg L⁻¹ ascorbic acid were assessed. Seeds without any treatment were considered as control. Priming with 50 mM CaCl2 was proved to be the most effective treatment in enhancing germination and seedling vigour among all other treatments including control as shown by higher final germination/emergence, germination energy and lower mean germination/emergence time. Furthermore, positive correlation between reducing sugars and dry weight and α-amylase activity and the concentration of reducing sugars indicates that enhancement due to priming could be attributed to higher reducing and total sugars as well as higher α-amylase activity in primed seeds.
Słabe wschody to powszechny problem w produkcji aksamitki.

Opis:
Extra-cellular matrix (ECM) components are important and their stabilization is significant in maintaining normal healthy joint environment. In osteoarthritis (OA), ECM components are altered and indicate disease progression. The joint ECM is composed of proteoglycans (aggrecan, perlecan, inter α-trypsin inhibitor), glycoproteins (fibronectin, lubricin, COMP) and collagen types (most abundantly collagen type II) which represent structural and functional transformation during disease advancement. ECM investigation revealed significant biomarkers of OA that could be used as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in different canine orthopedic diseases. This review deliberates our current findings of how the components of ECM change at the molecular level during disease progression in canine OA.

Opis:
Peach fruit and trees are prone to various issues, regarding yield, quality and pest attack. Calcium plays several roles in plant and fruit development. Therefore the current study was conducted to evaluate the response of peach fruit to foliar application. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with two factors factorial arrangement and three replicates. Calcium chloride was applied at the rate of 0, 1, 2 and 3%. The foliar application of calcium was done at pink bud stage, berry size fruit stage, and then at pit hardening stage of peach. The obtained results indicated that foliar application of calcium significantly improved peach fruit quality and yield. The highest fruit weight (142.6 g), yield tree⁻¹ (15.6 kg), ascorbic acid content (6.67 mg∙100 g⁻¹), total soluble solids (11.0°Bx), fruit juice pH (3.98), sugar to acid ratio (45.1), fruit firmness (3.90 kg∙cm⁻²) and fruit volume (155.6 cm³) was obtained with the application of 3% solution of calcium chloride at pit hardening stage but it significantly reduced the percent titratable acidity (0.3%) and disease incidence (5.8%). It was concluded that 3% calcium chloride applied at the pit hardening stage significantly boosted peach quality and fruit yield.

Opis:
The increasing concern for the safety and sustainability of structures is calling for the development of smart self-healing materials and preventive repair methods. This research is carried out to investigate the extent of self-healing in normal-strength concrete by using Sporosarcina aquimarina – NCCP-2716 immobilized in expanded perlite (EP) as the carrier. The efficacy of crack-healing was also tested using two alternative self-healing techniques, i.e. expanded perlite (EP) concrete and direct introduction of bacteria in concrete. A bacterial solution was embedded in EP and calcium lactate pentahydrate was added as the nutrient. Experiments revealed that specimens containing EP-immobilized bacteria had the most effective crack-healing. After 28 days of healing, the values of completely healed crack widths were up to 0.78 mm, which is higher than the 0.5 mm value for specimens with the direct addition of bacteria. The specimen showed a significant self-healing phenomenon caused by substantial calcite precipitation by bacteria. The induced cracks were observed to be repaired autonomously by the calcite produced by the bacteria without any adverse effect on strength. The results of this research could provide a scientific foundation for the use of expanded perlite as a novel microbe carrier and Sporosarcina aquimarina as a potential microbe in bacteria-based self-healing concrete.

Opis:
The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is escalating, posing a significant challenge to human healthcare systems. In the present study, mineral and monosaccharide compositions, and antidiabetic potential of polysaccharide fractions separated from Centella asiatica (L.) leaves (CAL) were assessed. Initial single-factor experiments identified key extraction parameters, further optimized through response surface methodology (RSM) with optimal conditions determined as a liquid-to-solid ratio of 24.43:1 (mL/g), extraction time of 60.76 min, and a temperature of 83.31℃. Alcohol insoluble residue (AIR) extraction yielded three crude polysaccharide fractions (P50, P70, and P90). P50 was obtained with the highest yield (14.31%) and exhibited the highest content of total sugars and uronic acids (68.01 and 24.28 g/100 g, respectively). Calcium, magnesium, and manganese were dominant minerals in P50 and P70. Monosaccharide composition analysis via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) demonstrated enrichment of galacturonic acid, galactose, and arabinose in P50 and P70. Furthermore, both fractions (P50 and P70) exhibited dose-dependent inhibitory effects on α-amylase and α-glucosidase. At 5 mg/mL, P50 caused 68.3% α-amylase inhibition and 62.3% α-glucosidase inhibition, while P70 triggered 46.8% and 34.1% inhibition, respectively. In conclusion, this study is the first to provide valuable insights into optimizing CAL extraction conditions. Potential utilization of polysaccharide fractions obtained from CAL as components for formulating functional foods can be explored in the future.
