    Esej traktuje o „przestrzeniach szeroko zamkniętych” we współczesnych metropoliach – przez to określenie rozumiem terytoria należące do prywatnych firm i koncernów, zlokalizowane przeważnie w wielkich biurowcach. Miejsca te mają pewne cechy zarówno przestrzeni publicznej, jak i prywatnej. Współtworzą zarazem jedną ze sfer, w której przebiegają procesy fragmentacji i zawłaszczania przestrzeni miejskiej, budują bowiem symboliczne i dosłowne bariery dostępu. W tekście poddaję szkicowej analizie to, jak funkcjonują „przestrzenie szeroko zamknięte” i jaką rolę pełnią w dzisiejszych metropoliach.
    The essay concerns “widely closed spaces” in today’s metropolises. By this term I understand territories that belong to private firms and syndicates and are predominantly situated in big office buildings. These places have certain features both of the public and the private space. They also co-create one of the zones in which the processes of fragmentation and appropriation of the urban space take place. It is so because they construct symbolic and literal barriers to access. The text provides an analysis of the functioning of “widely closed spaces” and their role in today’s metropolises.

    Tekst jest próbą analizy relacji i interakcji pomiędzy głównymi aktorami „sceny warszawskiej”: przedstawicielami władz lokalnych, badaczami społecznymi, architektami, urbanistami, dziennikarzami i zwykłymi mieszkańcami stolicy. Autorka stara się podsumować dyskurs o przestrzeni publicznej Warszawy i trudności w komunikacji, jakie stały się udziałem uczestników tej debaty, oraz określić miejsce Warszawy na osi rozpiętej pomiędzy metropolią a miastem Trzeciego Świata. Centralna problematyka obejmuje zagadnienia definiowania przestrzeni publicznej i jej funkcji stołecznych w przypadku Warszawy, pozycji i ról bohaterów „gry o przestrzeń miejską”, struktury architektoniczno-urbanistycznej oraz tożsamości mieszkańców. Esej oparty został o badania sondażowe, wywiady pogłębione i analizę treści zawartych w przekazach medialnych.
    The text is an essay of analysis of the relations and interactions between the main protagonists of the “Warsaw scene”: the local administration representatives, anthropologists and sociologists, architects, urbanists, journalists and common citizens. The author is trying to summarise the discourse about the public space in Warsaw and about the difficulties in communication that concern the public discussion on the topic. The aim of the analysis is also to define the place of Warsaw as a city that belongs as well to the Europeans’ metropolises and to the towns of the Third World at the same time. The main topic concerns the view of the public spaces and its social functions in case of Warsaw, the position and roles of the heroes of “the game of the city space”, the architectural and urbanistic structure, the citizens’ identity and other issues. The essay is based on the personal research and TNS OBOP’s surveys and discourse analysis of the media content.

    Tekst ten przedstawia przestrzeń miejską z perspektywy kilku szlaków pamięci istniejących w Warszawie i Krakowie. Punktem wyjścia dla autorów stało się badanie charakteru i roli warszawskich oraz krakowskich pomników. Analizie poddane zostały materialne i symboliczne „ścieżki pamięci” w obu miastach, a główne pytania badawcze dotyczyły obszarów tematycznych, elementów tworzących poszczególne szlaki oraz ich wpływu na przestrzeń miejską.
    This paper presents the urban space from the perspective of “memory traces” functioning in Warsaw and Krakow. The authors analyzed the nature of these traces and their elements – monuments and other places of historical meaning, and the roles they play in the cities and the social memory of their inhabitants – both in their material and symbolic meanings. The research concentrated on the themes of the “memory traces”, their elements and influence on the cities’ spaces.

    A planned reconstruction of an Upper Silesian city raises extreme emotions among its inhabit¬ants (and not only). The authorities have a particular vision of this place, definitely a modern one, basing on the urbanist and architecture solutions introduced in the metropolis of Europe and all over the world. The reconstruction is to cover the centre of Katowice. The text presents the winning project of an architecture studio by Tomasz Konior. The roundabout of the art is always the beginning of the path which is to be created in Katowice. It will be composed of the laces in which the current artists presenting different actions and using different media will be active. The image and function of this part of the city will change completely. However, such ideas and actions are arbitrary in nature. It does not mean that the choice is wrong. The “French way” shows that the most visionary realizations in Paris would never appear if they were based on social advice. They also barely take into account local traditions and forms present in the urban landscape grounded in the awareness of Silesians. The aim is to make the new symbolic surplus of the space in Katowice become the basis allowing for the self identification of both those inhabitants who are inclined to accept social changes concerning the whole region and those from the outside - settling in here for good and tourists. It goes about the creation of specific urban attractions which will create a new image of Katowice, interest, distinguish the space of this Upper Silesian city and at the same time remove negative associations built on the stereotypes of mine landscapes. Is such a reconstruction (because this is the task which both the clerks, urbanists and architects aim at) based on the spacious structure possible? To what an extent is the compromise, the combina¬tion of the new one with the elements of the local tradition, allowing for an ease of a revolutionary change in the urban identity necessary? What creates the so far identification of the city and its inhabitants, what is worth saving and which signs and perspectives should be definitely disposed of? What will new Katowice look like? It is worth remembering that it has been a “cycling city” since its creation, which to a large extent decides on the specificity and potential mobility. All these questions constitute the frame of a work.
