Opis:
The paper deals with the structural diversity and production of a less frequently studied type of alder stands originated on former agricultural lands in the 1950s, established partly by plantation and partly by natural succession in the area of the Krkonoše Mts. and the Orlické hory Mts. (Czech Republic). Four permanent research plots (PRP) were established at sites where Black alder (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn.) and Grey alder (Alnus incana L. Moench.) naturally occurs, each plot of 0.25 ha in size. The aim of the study was to evaluate the structure and development of the alder stands with respect to biodiversity, horizontal, vertical and species structure, diameter increment with emphasis on climate factors, and the quantity and quality of timber production. The results document low diversification of the studied stands in the PRPs. The horizontal structure is defined as random and clumped at sites at the highest altitude with high water table. The number of living trees with DBH ≥ 4 cm ranges between 556 to 828 trees ha-1 with the relative stand density index (SDI) 0.67–0.77. The stand volume ranges from 247 to 393 m3 ha–1, and decreases with higher altitudes. Low temperatures is limiting factor for radial growth in the high mountain areas, respectively low precipitation in the middle lands. Owing to a rather specific site character, as especially the spring area, the stands exhibit only average production, but the production quality is generally high. The quality timber is suitable for industrial use; the rot-affected trunk base parts usable for fuel represent only approximately 16%.

Opis:
The paper presents a community of water plants that is new to Poland, Veronico beccabungae-Callitrichetum stagnalis (Oberd. 1957) Müller 1962. This community belongs to the class Potametea. It was discovered in the village of Odrowąż near the town of Krapkowice in Silesia (SW Poland). Veronico beccabungae-Callitrichetum stagnalis in Poland occurs within an irregularly shaped shallow underwater spring, located in the distal part of the Oder River’s flood terrace. This plant community covered 0.2 ha in 2008. Callitriche stagnalis predominated in this community. Species such as Callitriche hamulata and Callitriche verna occurred less frequently. An average of five species were counted in a relevé. Alkaline sediments (pH 8.03) occur in the substratum, but sediments with a lower pH value (7.73) occur in the spring’s outflow zone towards the Odra River. Water in the spring, where Veronico beccabungae-Callitrichetum stagnalis occurred, has a medium mineralisation but is rich in dissolved compounds. The condition of this community within the studied habitat could be evidence for highly adaptive abilities and this community's good adjustment to the natural conditions. Veronico beccabungae-Callitrichetum stagnalis is a rare and endangered plant community in Central Europe. The locality of this plant community in Poland should be given species protection.

Opis:
The standard exponential model for CDOM absorption has been applied to data from diverse waters. Absorption at 440 nm (ag440) ranged between close to zero and 10 m−1, and the slope oft he semilogarithmic absorption spectrum over a minimum range of400 to 440 nm (s440) ranged between <0.01 and 0.04 nm−1. No relationship was found between ag440 or s440 and salinity. Except in the southern Baltic, s440 was found to have a broad distribution (0.0165 ± 0.0035), suggesting that it should be introduced as an additional variable in bio-optical models when ag440 is large. An alternative model for CDOM absorption was applied to available high quality UV-visible absorption spectra from the WisGla river (Poland). This model assumes that the CDOM absorption spectrum comprises distinct Gaussian absorption bands in the UV, similar to those ofb enzene. Five bands were fit to the data. The mean central energy ofal l bands was higher in early summer (E ∼7.2, 6.6, 6.4, 6.2 and 5.5 eV or 172, 188, 194, 200 and 226 nm) than in winter. The higher energy bands were found to decay in both height and width with increasing salinity, while lower energy bands broadened with increasing salinity. s440 was found to be correlated with shape parameters of the bands centred at 6.4 and 5.5 eV. While the exponential model is convenient for optical modelling and remote sensing applications, these results suggest that the Gaussian model offers a deeper understanding ofc hemical interactions affecting CDOM molecular structure.

Opis:
The Holocaust - the almost total extermination of European Jews by the Germans during World War II (1939-45) is primarily associated with such German extermination camps as Auschwitz, Bełżec, Majdanek, Sobibór or Treblinka. In addition to these places, Central and Eastern Europe, including territory, within the present Polish borders, is literally dotted with forgotten individual and mass Jewish war graves. These are the graves of Jews who were not sent to the German death camps during the liquidation of the ghettos during Reinhardt’s operation (March 1942 - November 1943), but were murdered during and after the mass extermination. These Jews were buried in nameless graves located in forests, roadside ditches, arable fields, etc. In most cases, their number and exact location are unknown, both for scientists and descendants of victims, although they often exist in the memories of the last living witnesses of the Holocaust and local communities . One of the statutory tasks of the Rabbinical Commission for Jewish cemeteries in Poland is to search for the forgotten graves of Holocaust victims and restore the identity of the murderers who were taken away from them. The Commission, as a religious entity, headed by the Chief Rabbi of Poland, operates in support of the Jewish law - Halacha, whose regulations define the method and methodology of research. Halacha prohibits opening graves and moving the remains of the dead. All investigations specifying the location and size of the graves they must be carried out in a non-invasive manner, without interfering with the soil structure. In this study, the authors present the first results of work on the location of places of execution and mass graves of Jews from World War II, which were carried out using methods respecting the provisions of Jewish law. To locate these places, the following methods are used: the Holocaust witness account, documents from the Institute of National Remembrance, data from laser scanning, GPR measurements, historical and current aerial photographs. The authors will present the methods of their work and the problems they faced during the research.

Opis:
Several basic properties of fabrics for camouflage clothing and protection for military purposes are described. The physical and mechanical properties of the yarns and fabrics and their physiological properties with different structural parameters of fabrics were tested. The structural fabric parameters and after-treatment conditions affect the physical-mechanical and physiological properties of the fabrics. The correlation values of individual parameters are relatively high. The influence of abrasion on colour shades applied to camouflage fabrics is different, indicating a different resistance to the colour fastness of the fabrics.
Opisano szereg właściwości istotnych dla tkanin maskujących. Sprawdzono właściwości mechaniczne, fizyczne i fizjologiczne wybranych tkanin. Analizowano również wpływ użytkowania na badane parametry. Wartości korelacji poszczególnych parametrów są stosunkowo bardzo wysokie. Testy ścieralności wykazały wyraźny wpływ na kolor i trwałość zabarwienia.
