Opis:
Macroeconomic factors impact both the stock markets and society. However, one generic research question remains unanswered: Do all macroeconomic factors impact all markets and all countries with the same strength? This study aims to contribute to the perception of how macroeconomic factors impact the Portuguese Stock Market. It also considers how the Portuguese Stock Market reacts to various factors compared to the North American and Japanese Stock Markets, focusing on the last decade. Using GARCH Models, the results document that the Portuguese Stock Market suffers significant impacts from the EUR-USD exchange rate. In turn, oil and gold prices also have a significant influence. The Japanese market, at first sight, looks more resilient to outside events, but it is also sensitive to gold price fluctuations and the EUR-JPY exchange rate. The North American market especially feels pressure from exchange rates from both the EUR and JPY and Brent.

Opis:
In some cases, the estimators obtained in compound tests have better features than the traditional ones, obtained from individual tests, cf. Sobel and Elashoff (1975), Garner et al. (1989) and Loyer (1983). The bias, the efficiency and the robustness of these estimators are investigated in several papers, e.g. Chen and Swallow (1990), Hung and Swallow (1999) and Lancaster and Keller-McNulty (1998). Thus, the use of estimators based on compound tests not only allows a substantial saving of costs, but they also can (in some situations) be more accurate than the estimators based on the individual tests.
Nevertheless, each laboratory produces estimates for the prevalence rate of a given infection using different methodologies, such as halving nested procedures (Sobel and Elashoff, 1975) and square array testing (Kim et al., 2007). The logistic regression or the weighted least squares regression can be used in order to combine different prevalence rate estimates (Chen and Swallow, 1990). In this work some meta-analytical techniques are proposed as an alternative approach. This methodology has the advantage of being quite simple and flexible to account for the error source.

Opis:
Nowadays there is a search for new alternatives to replace harsh and expensive chemical methods to wastewater treatments. The common methods include the usage of chemicals that negatively affect the environment and the human health. The cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill have a great potential for use in innovative, cheap, renewable and eco-friendly water treatment due to their flocculant properties. In this work, different water treatments including fresh cladodes, lyophilized cladodes and the material obtained through mucilage extraction were tested. The turbidity of the water was measured, and it was concluded that the use of 60 g of small pieces of fresh cut cladodes was the method with the best results, reaching 4 NTU of turbidity. It confirmed the ability of O. ficus-indica (L.) Mill cladodes to promote the flocculation of clay in water, enabling to turn the unused material waste into a useful raw material.

Opis:
Biometric systems have been widely considered as a synonym of security. However, in recent years, malicious people are violating them by presenting forged traits, such as gelatin fingers, to fool their capture sensors (spoofing attacks). To detect such frauds, methods based on traditional image descriptors have been developed, aiming liveness detection from the input data. However, due to their handcrafted approaches, most of them present low accuracy rates in challenging scenarios. In this work, we propose a novel method for fingerprint spoofing detection using the Deep Boltzmann Machines (DBM) for extraction of high-level features from the images. Such deep features are very discriminative, thus making complicated the task of forgery by attackers. Experiments show that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art techniques, presenting high accuracy regarding attack detection

Opis:
Background: The inclusion of gymnastic-based movements in workout routines in many exercise training programs, generally called mixed modality training (MMT), and even in many competitions, is increasingly common. In contrast to artistic gymnastic competitions, MMT workouts aim to complete as many movements as quickly as possible, which tends to deform the movement pattern proposed by artistic gymnastics. Execution of the MMT workouts with more of the gymnastics-based style (i.e., based on the gymnastics movement pattern) could improve performance in exercises with a high-level complexity, such as the “ring muscle up” (RMU). Thus, this study aimed to analyze the kinematic aspects of RMU, performed by a former gymnast both with and without the gymnastics based style. Methods: A former gymnast with a successful transition to MMT, carried out RMU using two movement patterns: 1) close to the classical artistic gymnastics pattern (“Front uprise”), and 2) close to that used by many athletes not from gymnastics. The athlete performed RMU, three times with each proposed movement pattern. Images were captured using a high-speed digital camera. Hip and ankle displacement, velocity and acceleration were recorded and analyzed. Results: The execution of RMU was faster and the hip vertical displacement was greater when RMU was carried out with a gymnastics-based style, while ankle displacement path, peak velocity and acceleration were lower. Conclusion: The use of a gymnastics-based style to carry out RMU seems to be advantageous from the biomechanical point of view, favoring the performance of RMU.

Opis:
ObjectivesTo assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in municipal employees of Northern Portugal during the first pandemic wave (May–June 2020) and its association with potentially related risk factors for infection.Material and MethodsThe authors assessed municipal employees of 2 cities in Northern Portugal, in whom serological tests to SARS-CoV-2 and an epidemiological survey were applied. The authors assessed the proportion of individuals presenting IgM and/or IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, and evaluated the association between having positive serological test results, epidemiologic variables and clinical presentations. Reported symptoms were evaluated on their sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values.ResultsThe authors assessed 1696 employees, of whom 22.0% were firefighters, 10.4% were police officers, 10.3% were maintenance workers, and 8.1% were administrative assistants. The seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection was 2.9% (95% CI: 2.1–3.7%). Administrative assistants comprised the professional group with highest seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 (OR = 1.9 in the comparison with other occupational groups, 95% CI: 0.8–4.3, p = 0.126). The seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among those who were in direct contact with COVID-19 patients in their professional activity was 3.9%, compared to 2.7% among those who were not in direct contact with such patients (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 0.8–2.8, p = 0.222). The highest risk of infection was associated with the presence of a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in the household (OR = 17.4, 95% CI: 8.3–36.8, p < 0.001). Living with a healthcare professional was not associated with a higher risk of infection (OR = 1.0, 95% CI: 0.4–2.5, p = 0.934). Anosmia/dysgeusia was the symptom with the highest positive predictive value (52.2%, 95% CI: 31.8–72.6, p < 0.001) and specificity (99.3%, 95% CI: 98.9–99.7, p < 0.001), while cough was the most prevalent symptom among SARS-CoV-2 seropositive participants (36%).ConclusionsThe authors observed a SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence of 2.9% among assessed municipal employees. Anosmia/dysgeusia was the COVID-19 symptom which displayed the highest positive predictive value and specificity.
