This paper presents the results of experiments conducted within the Work Package 10 (fusion experimental programme) of the HiPER project. The aim of these experiments was to study the physics relevant for advanced ignition schemes for inertial confinement fusion, i.e. the fast ignition and the shock ignition. Such schemes allow to achieve a higher fusion gain compared to the indirect drive approach adopted in the National Ignition Facility in United States, which is important for the future inertial fusion energy reactors and for realising the inertial fusion with smaller facilities.

Opis:
The Sociedade de História Natural in Torres Vedras, Portugal houses an extensive collection of as yet undescribed dinosaur tracks with ornithopod affinities. They have been collected from different Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian–Tithonian) geological formations (Praia de Amoreira-Porto Novo, Alcobaça, Sobral, and Freixial) that outcrop along the Portuguese coast, and belong to two different sub-basins of the Lusitanian Basin (the Consolação and Turcifal sub-basins). Three main morphotypes can be distinguished on the basis of size, mesaxony and the morphology of the metatarsophalangeal pad impression. The minute to small-sized morphotype is similar to the Anomoepus-like tracks identified in other Late Jurassic areas. The small to medium-sized morphotype resembles the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous ichnotaxon Dinehichnus, already known in the Lusitanian Basin. Interestingly, these two morphotypes can be distinguished qualitatively (slightly different size, metatarsophalangeal pad impression and digit morphology) but are nevertheless difficult to discriminate by quantitatively analysing their length-width ratio and mesaxony. The third morphotype is considered a large ornithopod footprint belonging to the ichnofamily Iguanodontipodidae. This ichnofamily is typical for Cretaceous tracksites but the new material suggests that it might also be present in the Late Jurassic. The three morphotypes show a negative correlation between size and mesaxony, so the smaller tracks show the stronger mesaxony, and the larger ones weaker mesaxony. The Upper Jurassic ornithopod record from the Lusitanian Basin has yielded both small and medium-sized ornithopod remains, mainly iguanodontians such as dryosaurids and ankylopollexians, which are the main candidates to be the trackmakers.

Opis:
Nitrogen fixing bacteria have been used for centuries to improve the fertility of agricultural soils. Since the introduction of inorganic nitrogen (N) fertiliser that provides a reliable boost to crop yields whilst reducing land and labour requirements, the use of biological nitrogen fixation has been in decline. Recently, concerns have been expressed about the sustainability of inorganic N fertiliser application, however, there remain doubts about whether N2 fixing bacteria alone can provide agriculture with sufficient fixed N to feed a burgeoning global population. In this paper we review the current state of our knowledge regarding those diazotrophic bacteria that have a role to play in agriculture. We focus on our current areas of research, particularly, the importance of understanding the classification and mechanism of action of N2 fixing bacteria that are used in agricultural soils. We discuss the applications of N2 fixing bacteria that illustrate their potential to provide sustainable N, particularly focussing on Australian and South American agricultural systems where these bacteria are widely exploited to maintain soil fertility. We also identify problems with the use of bacteria as inoculants, including ineffective inoculation due to poor quality preparation, the use of appropriate isolates and issues with sustainability. We review the outlook for biological N fixation highlighting how molecular biology may enable the expression of N fixation in non-leguminous crops.

Opis:
In agriculture, the mixing of pesticides in tanks is a common practice. However, it is necessary to previse possible physical-chemical implications of this practice, which may affect the efficiency of the treatments performed. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of acaricide to insecticidal spray mixtures on the formation of spray droplets and the interaction with citrus leaves. The experimental design was totally randomized, in a (2 × 3 + 1) factorial scheme for seven treatments. Factor A corresponded to the spray mixture used (isolate or in the mixture). Factor B corresponded to the insecticides tested (lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam, phosmet, and imidacloprid) and the control consisted of a spray mixture with spirodiclofen only. Nine replications were performed for characterization of the spray droplet size spectrum and four replications for the analysis of the surface tension and the contact angle. The mixture of pesticides showed positive results in terms of application safety. The addition of acaricide to insecticide spray mixtures reduced the surface tension and contact angle of droplets on the adaxial surface of orange leaves. There was an increment in volume median diameter (VMD), a significant reduction in the volume of droplets with drift-sensitive size and improvement in the uniformity of droplet size. Therefore, the addition of acaricide to an insecticide spray mixture positively influenced spray droplet formation and the interaction with citrus leaves providing better coverage and droplet size fractions with an appropriate size for safe and efficient application.

Marine biological valuation provides a comprehensive concept for assessing the intrinsic value of subzones within a study area. This paper gives an update on the concept of marine biological valuation as described by Derous et al. (2007). This concept was based on a literature review of existing ecological valuation criteria and the consensus reached by a discussion group of experts during an international workshop in December 2004. The concept was discussed during an ENCORA –MARBEF workshop in December 2006, which resulted in the fine-tuning of the concept of marine biological valuation, especially with respect to its applicability to marine areas.

Opis:
Purpose: of this paper was to review and summarize significant papers related to the development and characterization of lignin-containing adhesives: polyurethane and epoxy types. In the last decades, several efforts have been dedicated on the development of renewable raw materials for polymer synthesis, mainly due to petroleum depletion and sustainability. In this context, lignin emerged as a potential candidate to substitute fossil-based raw materials in adhesive synthesis and formulations. Design/methodology/approach: Recent and other relevant papers were reviewed, aiming to identify the main advantages and limitations involved in lignin incorporation into epoxy and polyurethane adhesives formulations. First, effects of unmodified lignin addition were presented. Afterwards, the main lignin chemical modification methods were presented and discussed, based on thermomechanical results. Findings: Incorporation of unmodified lignin usually is limited to 30 %wt., otherwise mechanical properties are drastically affected as consequence of poor lignin solubility and excessive brittleness. Lignin chemical modification can be used to increase the reactivity of hydroxyl groups and/or add new moieties in its molecular structure, improving solubility and thermomechanical properties of cured adhesives. Practical implications: In the last years, some industrial plants started to operate and produce technical grade lignin at industrial scale, with reproducible properties and controlled molecular structure. Therefore, increasing efforts have been dedicated from researchers and chemists to develop lignin-based technologies, in which this work can directly contribute with. Originality/value: As consequence of the high content of phenol groups in its molecular structure, lignin was mostly applied on the development of phenolic resins applied as wood adhesives. For the first time in the literature, this work summarizes the advances related to synthesis and characterization of polyurethane and epoxy, applied as adhesives. Results can support the development and application of biobased, as well as contribute to the revalorization of this valuable and readily available biomass.

Opis:
Pest mites of the family Tetranychidae are commonly reported in several legumes. However, reports of their occurrence in lima beans are insipient, especially in Brazil. The objective of this research was to record the occurrence of mites in lima bean plants and to describe their damage in this Fabaceae. Tetranychus neocaledonicus André and Mononychellus planki McGregor were found in lima bean plants, Phaseolus lunatus (Fabaceae or Leguminosae). The lima bean plants, when infested by these mites, initially exhibit small whitish spots in the leaflets, which with increasing population density rapidly evolve into chlorotic patches, followed by silvering, and may dry out and fall due to their overfeeding. The extent of the damage caused to lima bean plants and the adaptability of the mite to warm and dry conditions indicate that T. neocaledonicus has greater potential as a lima bean pest than M. planki in northeastern Brazil. This is the first record of these mites associated with P. lunatus.

This paper discusses silica surface modification by a process involving a two-step reaction: anchoring of a silylating agent, followed by an attachment of a 4-amino-2-mercaptopyrimidine molecule. The modified material (Si-BP) was successfully characterized by the FTIR spectra, which revealed amine absorption bands, and through 13C and 29Si NMR spectra, which confirm the proposed structure of the modified silica (Si-BP). Si-BP was used to extract cadmium and lead from an aqueous medium at 298 K. The Si-BP kinetics towards metal ions was very fast, i.e., about 10 minutes, although extraction was significantly impaired at pH 3. The series of adsorption isotherms were adjusted to a modified Langmuir equation and the maximum extraction capacity was 0.193 and 0.387 mmol g-1 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. An analysis of the Ř values lead to the inference that the resulting metal ligand complex was type 1:1.

Opis:
Multi-hole probes are simple and robust device to measurement of flow velocity magnitude and direction in wide range of angles of attack – up to 75°. They become popular as they may be easily use to measurement of unknown flow velocity, while optical methods, like PIV or LDA, require some knowledge about the flow for proper setting of measurement devices. Multi-hole probes are also more lasting in comparison with CTA hot-wire probes, which may be damaged by a dust. A multi-hole probe measures air pressure with one pressure tap on its tip and a few (usually 2, 4, 6 or more) taps on conical or semispherical surface of the probe tip. Based on measured pressures, some non-dimensional pressure coefficients are calculated, which are related to flow velocity direction (i.e. two angles in Cartesian or spherical coordinate system) and magnitude. Finding relations between these parameters is relatively complex, which for years was limiting application of multi-hole probes. The article summarizes methods of multi-hole probes calibration and use, which may be classified as nulling and non-nulling methods or – with other criteria – as global and local methods. The probe, which was presented in the article, was the 5-hole straight probe manufactured by Vectoflow GmbH and calibrated in the stand designed and manufactured at the Institute of Aviation. The local interpolation algorithm has been used for calibration, with some modifications aimed on mitigate of mounting uncertainty, which is related with the non-alignment of flow velocity direction and probe axis Results of calibration showed that the accuracy of presented methodology is satisfactory. The standard measurement uncertainty was assessed for 0.2° for the pitch angle and yaw angle, which is better than accuracy declared by the probe’s manufacturer (1.0°). The measurement uncertainty of the flow velocity is approximately 0.12 m/s, similarly like in manufacturer’s data.
