Opis:
We analyze the evolution of an infectious disease by combining different groups of a population when the route of transmission is via encounters with free-living virulent organisms that can survive for a long time outside the individual. This study involves matrix analysis of lower triangular block matrices and some of their spectral properties. We propose an N-periodic control strategy in order to stabilize the disease around the disease-free equilibrium point.

Opis:
Micronutrient deficiencies have increased over recent decades due to the general depreciation of the quality of poor people’s diet, both in developed and developing countries. The deficiencies of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) are a critical public health problem worldwide, with the negative impact on health, lifespan and productivity. Biofortification is an agricultural approach that can improve human nutrition on a global scale. Agronomic biofortification is considered a short-term and complementary strategy, but economic analyses suggest that genetic biofortification is the most effective strategy for increasing dietary Fe and Zn intakes of vulnerable populations. Enrichment of cereal grains by breeding is a high-priority area of research, and an effective strategy among other approaches, e.g, fortification, supplementation and food diversification. This review discusses the role of Fe and Zn in plant nutrition, the potential strategies for developing Fe and Zn biofortified crops and their importance in human nutrition.
W pracy omówiono rolę Fe i Zn w odżywianiu roślin, potencjalne strategie rozwoju upraw z wykorzystaniem biofortyfikacji Fe i Zn oraz znaczenie tych upraw w żywieniu człowieka.

The noise of motor vehicles is one of the most important problems as regards to pollution on main roads. However, this unpleasant characteristic could be used to determine vehicle speed by external observers. Building on this idea, the present study investigates the capabilities of a microphone array system to identify the position and velocity of a vehicle travelling on a previously established route. Such linear microphone array has been formed by a reduced number of microphones working at medium frequencies as compared to industrial microphone arrays built for location purposes, and operates with a processing algorithm that ultimately identifies the noise source location and reduces the error in velocity estimation

We study tensor norms and operator ideals related to the ideal $P_{p,σ}$, 1 < p < ∞, 0 < σ < 1, of (p,σ)-absolutely continuous operators of Matter. If α is the tensor norm associated with $P_{p,σ}$ (in the sense of Defant and Floret), we characterize the $(α')^t$-nuclear and $(α')^t$- integral operators by factorizations by means of the composition of the inclusion map $L^r(μ) → L^1(μ) + L^p(μ)$ with a diagonal operator $B_w:L^{∞}(μ) → L^r(μ)$, where r is the conjugate exponent of p'/(1-σ). As an application we study the reflexivity of the components of the ideal $P_{p,σ}$.

We consider the limit behaviour of elastic shells when the relative thickness tends to zero. We address the case when the middle surface has principal curvatures of opposite signs and the boundary conditions ensure the geometrical rigidity. The limit problem is hyperbolic, but enjoys peculiarities which imply singularities of unusual intensity. We study these singularities and their propagation for several cases of loading, giving a somewhat complete description of the solution.

Opis:
A small assemblage of extremely well-preserved fragments of new sponges has been discovered in calcipelites of the middle Cambrian El Mogallón Formation in the Cerro El Mogallón section, near Arivechi in eastern Sonora, Mexico. The assemblage includes two new reticulosan species referred to Ratcliffespongia arivechensis sp. nov. and Valospongia sonorensis sp. nov., combined with disarticulated remains assigned to Kiwetinokia and additional, currently unidentifiable taxa. The new species represent the first records of these Cambrian genera from Mexico, although they are widely distributed at low latitudes, being previously best known from Utah but extending through Laurentia and South China. This middle Cambrian fauna indicates that there was considerable continuity of the deeper-water hexactinellid sponges between the warm peri-platform of Laurentia and the peri-continental Cambrian platform of Sonora. The new material supports the impression of extremely wide distribution of Cambrian sponge genera, with local diversification at species level within regions, in contrast to much greater generic-level endemism during the Ordovician Period.

Opis:
This paper presents a multivariate regression predictive model of drift on the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) behaviour. Evaluation tests on a CMM with a multi-step gauge were carried out following an extended version of an ISO evaluation procedure with a periodicity of at least once a week and during more than five months. This test procedure consists in measuring the gauge for several range volumes, spatial locations, distances and repetitions. The procedure, environment conditions and even the gauge have been kept invariables, so a massive measurement dataset was collected over time under high repeatability conditions. A multivariate regression analysis has revealed the main parameters that could affect the CMM behaviour, and then detected a trend on the CMM performance drift. A performance model that considers both the size of the measured dimension and the elapsed time since the last CMM calibration has been developed. This model can predict the CMM performance and measurement reliability over time and also can estimate an optimized period between calibrations for a specific measurement length or accuracy level.

Opis:
This paper describes a homogenization model for evaluating the effective elastodynamic properties of acoustic metamaterials in problems involving wave propagation. The methodology is based on determining the constitutive equations in terms of averaged quantities observed at the macroscale. In this sense, the approach very closely follows the pioneering ideas introduced by Willis, and afterwards, followed by several authors in the last ten years. The distinctive characteristic of our approach is that we write the microscale equation in the spatial domain. The model is validated with previous results published in the literature, and our results replicate them almost exactly. The resulting homogenization model could be used as an additional tool for the topology design of acoustic metamaterials.

Opis:
Depression of pyrite by dextrin in flotation with xanthates has been studied. The adsorption of dextrin and xanthates at the pyrite/aqueous solution interface has been investigated through electrokinetics, Raman spectroscopy and batch adsorption studies using oxidized pyrite. Microflotation studies were undertaken to evaluate the pyrite depression with dextrin using ethyl and propyl xanthates as the collector. The surface density of ferric hydroxide on pyrite depended on pH and was highest about the iep (pH 7.5) of the oxidized pyrite. Dextrin adsorption was directly related to the surface density of ferric hydroxide and took place through two steps suggesting two adsorption mechanisms on ferric hydroxide. Xanthate adsorption as dixanthogen occurred along with ferric hydroxide dissolution causing partial dextrin desorption from the pyrite surface; consequently, co-adsorption of xanthate and dextrin occurred on the surface. Depression of pyrite flotation with xanthate was determined by the oxidation level of the pyrite surface. Floatability of pyrite with xanthate was highly impaired by dextrin at pH 8 only when the surface density of ferric hydroxide on the pyrite surface was very high.

Opis:
EDAS (EGNOS Data Access Service) is the EGNOS internet broadcast service, which provides free of charge access to the data collected and generated by the EGNOS infrastructure. EDAS disseminates over the Internet, both in real time and via an FTP archive, the raw data of the GPS, GLONASS (no commitment on GLONASS data is provided (1)) and EGNOS GEO satellites collected by the receivers located at the EGNOS reference stations, which are mainly distributed over Europe and North Africa. The EDAS services offer several types of GNSS data in various protocols and formats, such as DGNSS corrections. This paper reports on the results of some in-field tests conducted by ESSP and Topcon Agriculture to confirm the suitability of EDAS DGNSS corrections for precision farming in Europe. The European Commission (EC) is the owner of EGNOS system (including EDAS) and has delegated the exploitation of EGNOS to the European GNSS Agency (GSA). EDAS service provision is performed by ESSP, as EGNOS Services Provider, under contract with the GSA, the EGNOS program manager. In the ENC 2018 article “EDAS (EGNOS Data Access Service): Differential GPS corrections performance test with state-of-the-art precision agriculture system”, ESSP and Topcon Agriculture presented the results of the first in-field test conducted in a dynamic and real-life environment in the summer of 2017. The test results indicated that the EDAS DGNSS corrections could enable a reliable pass-to-pass accuracy performance for a wide range of precision agriculture applications and become an attractive solution for cereal farms, when the farm is located in the vicinity of an EGNOS reference station. In particular, Topcon Agriculture acknowledged that the observed performance was sufficient to support the following precision agriculture applications: spraying and spreading of any crop type, tilling and harvesting of cereal. Then, ESSP and Topcon Agriculture engaged in additional testing activities to further characterise the EDAS DGPS performance in different scenarios (i.e. at various European locations and with a variety of distances between the designated farm and the target EGNOS reference station). In each test, multiple runs with the rover tractors have been performed over the reference patterns predefined in the Topcon guidance systems. Data recorded during the tests has been analysed in detail, looking at the key performance indicators (e.g. cross track error and pass-to-pass performance) that characterize the EDAS DGPS performance for precision agriculture applications. Different techniques for the computation of the pass-to-pass accuracy performance have been used, including a procedure to measure live in the field and a post-processing alternative. The diversity of scenarios available allows drawing conclusions on the applicability of EDAS DGPS corrections (in terms of maximum distance from the target EGNOS station) for precision agriculture and also understanding the impact of operationally relevant aspects such as the quality of the mobile internet coverage (highly variable across Europe). The EDAS system and its architecture, the main types of data disseminated through EDAS services and the online information available to the EDAS users are introduced in this paper. In particular, the EDAS Ntrip service is described in detail, since it provides the differential corrections to the GPS and GLONASS satellites at the EGNOS reference stations in RTCM format, which are the basis for the present study. The article also reports on the results of the latest tests, which have been performed using Topcon receivers, vehicles and auto-steering systems. In all cases, two different Topcon guidance systems on board tractors were running simultaneously to assess the EDAS DGPS positioning performance with respect to a the reference provided by a top-performing RTK-based Topcon solution. The objective of this paper is to draw conclusions on the use of EDAS DGPS corrections as a reliable free-of-charge alternative for precision farming in Europe (especially for cereal farms), based on the available performance results from the testing campaign and the feedback from the involved precision agriculture experts.
