Opis:
The future of food security in Africa is being severely threatened due to an exponential increase in population, which is almost three times the increase of food production. Maize production is constrained by stem borers which cause significant yield losses. Yield losses can be further compounded by higher temperatures due to climate changes, which are expected to increase the population of maize stem borers. While several methods have been employed in stem borer management, there is still significant damage caused by maize stem borers. This necessitates better control methods including the adoption of recent biotechnological advancement in RNA interference (RNAi) technology. This review highlights evidence of an increase in the stem borer population as well as the foreseen decline in maize production worldwide due to the effects of climatic changes. Furthermore, we have drawn attention to improved methods that have been used to control stem borers in maize production as well as a reluctant acceptance of traditional biotechnology in Africa. Finally, we suggest the application of alternative RNA interference techniques to breed maize for efficient pest control in order to achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable maize production.

Opis:
Gari fortified with Bambara Groundnut Flour (BGF) was assessed for its proximate composition, functional properties, sensory evaluation and Rheological properties. Four samples; 100% gari (coded SLY), 90 % gari with 10 % BGF (coded ATS), 85 % gari with 15 % BGF (coded FEA), and 80 % gari with 20 % BGF (coded ROT) were examined for the parameters listed above. The proximate analysis showed that the protein content ranges between 0.98-4.68 %, fat content 1.10-2.60 %, ash content 1.82-2.90 %, crude fibre 2.30-2.42 %. This showed an increase on addition of BGF while the carbohydrate content ranges between 78.20-83.5 %, moisture 11.60-12.6% and acidity 0.40-0.60, all showed a decrease in value on adding BGF. Rheological value showed that the peak viscosity ranges between 106.17-177.17, trough viscosity 98.33-161.00, breakdown 7.83-16.71, final viscosity 150.50-251.67, set back 52.17-90.67 and pasting time between 6.87-6.93. All these varied inversely with the quantity of BGF added. Pasting temperature showed slight variation which was not dependent on the amount of BGF added. It ranges from 79.2-80.02 °C. Sensory evaluation showed that there were significant differences in the samples examined.

Opis:
Rehabilitative modalities such as incentive spirometry and physiotherapy interventions, e.g. aerobic exercises, have been shown to produce positive outcomes in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Hemispheric CVA and other complications arising from SCD are amenable to physiotherapy. There have been few studies on the effectiveness of physiotherapy in the management of individuals with SCD. The present study attempts to assess the SCD-related knowledge, attitude and level of participation of physiotherapists in the Nigerian healthcare system. It also examines a possible association between the foregoing and practice settings. The study was carried out among physiotherapists in South-West Nigeria registered on professional e-platforms. The respondents filled in an adapted electronic version of a questionnaire. The IBM SPSS 20 was used for statistical analysis, and a chi-square test was used to determine an association between the levels of knowledge, practice settings, and participation among the respondents (p < 0.05). The study findings revealed that only 19% of respondents had received a specific training related to the care of SCD patients, although 65% had been involved in the treatment of at least one patient with SCD. Only 29.5% of respondents had “Good Knowledge” of SCD pathophysiology. A statistically significant association (χ2 = 75.357, p = 0.012) was found between respondents’ level of knowledge and their practice settings, i.e. a teaching hospital mostly. The physiotherapists from the Nigerian South-West,mostly those working in teaching hospitals, reported an average level of knowledge of SCD care. Since the management of sickle cell disease is of multidisciplinary character and requires an all hands-on deck approach, controlled trials should be undertaken by physiotherapy researchers regarding the effects of modalities and interventions on pro-inflammatory bio-molecules.

Opis:
Stability studies of the formulations of CAR solid dispersions were analyzed at 300C/65%RH for a period of three months. A simple reverse phase HPLC was developed and validated for the quantification of CAR solid dispersions. Chromatographic separation was achieved on Waters Atlantis dC18 (4.6 X 150mm) column with a mobile phase consisting of 0.033M phosphate buffer and methanol (35:65). The mobile phase was filtered using an organic filter paper and sonicated for about 20 min. The flow rate was 1ml/min and 242nm wavelength was used for detection. Force degradation studies were conducted under three conditions namely; acidic, basic and hydroxide peroxide conditions. With the HPLC linearity concentration was in the range of 5-80μg/ml with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9995. There was no interference with drug carriers. The suggested reverse phase HPLC methodology is simple, selective, linear and robust in quantifying the amount of CAR in the various solid dispersion samples. In hydrogen peroxide a degraded product was found on the chromatogram unlike that of the acidic and basic conditions. Degradation occurred more strongly in the acidic condition than in the basic condition. The binary systems were less stable than the ternary system solid dispersions due to the presence of HP-β-CD.
