Throughout the centuries French and Francophone writers were relatively rarely inspired by the figure of Moses and the story of Exodus. However, since the second half of 20th c. the interest of the writers in this Old Testament story has been on the rise: by rewriting it they examine the question of identity dilemmas of contemporary men. One of the examples of this trend is Moïse Fiction, the 2001 novel by the French writer of Jewish origin, Gilles Rozier, analysed in the present article. The hypertextual techniques, which result in the proximisation of the figure of Moses to the reality of the contemporary reader, constitute literary profanation, but at the same time help place Rozier’s text in the Jewish tradition, in the spirit of talmudism understood as an exchange of views, commentaries, versions and additions related to the Torah. It is how the novel, a new “midrash”, avoids the simple antinomy of the concepts of the sacred and the profane. Rozier’s Moses, conscious of his complex identity, is simultaneously a Jew and an Egyptian, and faces, like many contemporary Jewish writers, language dilemmas, which constitute one of the major motifs analysed in the present article. Another key question is the ethics of the prophetism of the novelistic Moses, who seems to speak for contemporary people, doomed to in the world perceived as chaos unsupervised by an absolute being. Rozier’s agnostic Moses is a prophet not of God (who does not appear in the novel), but of humanism understood as the confrontation of a human being with the absurdity of his or her own finiteness, which produces compassion for the other, with whom the fate of a mortal is shared.

The return of the theme of the Great War in literature imposes on the contemporary reader a double heritage: that of grief and guilt. The post‐ memory rediscovery of loss is therefore accompanied by a prise de conscience of forgetting or indifference, in family memory and History, in relation to war’s anonymous victims. In the fiction compared in this paper, Douze lettres au soldat inconnu by Olivier Barbarant and Visites aux vivants by Cathie Barreau, loss is thematized by deconstructing the specter of the Great War. The two authors attempt to libertate the specters from the aura of anxiety, on the one hand in the hope of taming the past, on the other to give voice, as well individual integrity, to the forgotten subjects of the Great War.

The article focuses on the analysis of Sergio Kokis’ novel “Errances” as an example of contemporary transvalorization of the myth of Odysseus. Kokis’ novel is treated as a „récit odysséen” (an „Odyssean narrative”), i.e. a type of fiction characterized by the theme of an exile’s return to the native land and the exploration of the protagonist’s narrative identity by means of metafictional devices. In the process of rewriting the Homeric epic and 20th century versions of the myth of Odysseus (Nikos Kazantzakis’ “The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel” and Joseph Conrad’s novels), Sergio Kokis deconstructs the concept of the return to the native land defined in terms of territory and ethnicity. What emerges from the novel, is a concept of the ethos of the eternal wanderer based on the shattering of the illusion of collective belonging as the source of identity. Albert Memmi, one of the forerunners of the postcolonial thought, perceived the Jewish condition as an emblem, even an archetype, of any dominated, oppressed, dispossessed condition. The highly specific consciousness of the colonised condition which the Jewish writer manifests seems to be shaped by the centuries-long communal experience, which exceeds the historical and political frames of postcolonialism sensu stricto, as the Jewish identity is stigmatised from its beginnings (conceived of as a narrative conveyed by the biblical tradition) by the experience of oppression and the threat of extermination or assimilation. These transhistorical factors determine to a large extent linguistic strategies typical for Jewish literature written in European (non-Jewish) languages. It is from this perspective that the present article discusses the role of the linguistic superconsciousness of Albert Cohen and Piotr Rawicz, two francophone Jewish writers, whose works - precursory to the postmodern condition - reveal identitarian, ethical and esthetic challenges related to the use of the language of the other in the creative process. Micro-(h)istorical narratives by Claude Duneton and Jean Echenoz – The purpose of this article is a comparative study of two recent French novels, Le Monument. Roman vrai by Claude Duneton (2004) and 1914 by Jean Echenoz (2012), which, in spite of formal and ideological differences, approach the theme of the Great War in a way similar to micro-historical frameworks. Like historians representing this field of historiography, both writers depict the four years of the First World War by focusing on a small community and a geographical space limited to a small location on the home-front. Referring to the distinction between roman de l’historien (the historian’s novel) and roman du témoin (the witness’s novel) proposed by Emmanuel Bouju, the author of the article analyses the strategies used by the novelists to create an indirect witness’s point-of-view, juxtaposed with the perspective of the contemporary recipient of the events that happened a hundred years ago.
Celem artykułu jest porównanie dwóch francuskich powieści – Le Monument. Roman vrai Claude’a Dunetona (2004) i 1914 Jeana Echenoza (2012), w których opowieść o I wojnie przypomina strategie stosowane w pisarstwie mikrohistorycznym. Odnosząc się do rozróżnienia pomiędzy kategoriami powieści historyka (roman historique) i powieści świadka (roman istorique), w ujęciu Emmanuela Bouju, autor omawia strategie stosowane przez obu powieściopisarzy w celu stworzenia efektu zapośredniczonego świadectwa zestawionego z punktem widzenia dzisiejszego odbiorcy wydarzeń sprzed stu lat.

In his “Réparer le monde. La littérature française face au XXI e siècle”, published in 2017, Alexandre Gefen highlights writing practices that have some beneficial impact on the experience of disease. I situate in this perspective Caroline Gutmann’s novel Les Papillons Noirs (2018), which is a unique fusion of autopathography (Grisi) with a filiation narrative (Viart). Two dimensions of filiation are under analysis – the familial and the mythical and literary ones – which become for the “writing I” a therapeutic means of fighting with cancer, as well as intergenerational traumas liberated in the process of reading/writing from the family “crypt” (Törok).

The aim of the article is to provide a reading of Gilles Rozier’s novels in the context of the phenomenon of Jewish postmemory (Hirsch), which in recent literature acquires a new dimension. The texts selected for disscussion exemplify the return to narrative and to the subject in contemporary novel and signal a new approach to postmemory employed by the third generation of survivors, participants of the Jewish revival. In Rozier’s novels, and in texts by other contemporary writers (e.g., Daniel Mendelsohn in the USA or Piotr Paziński in Poland), while the memory of WWII does not disappear, the focus most often falls on the narrative of Jewish life before and after the Holocaust. Postmemory exists in those texts in the form of the transmission of the word, repossession of the language of ancestors, cultural continuity rather than silence and separation, which characterised the output of earlier generations of writers (such as, for example, Georges Perec).

Transtextuality is the first principle o f Albert Cohen’s writing. The author of this paper is trying to reveal the function on the combination of two aspects of transtextuality (external and internal) in generating multiple interpretations of Cohen’s novels. To illustrate this problem the author presents one of the narrative strategies in Albert Cohen’s prose: “transtextual mise en abyme”, applied to Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina. This notion refers to the combined effect of transtextual processes (from implicit mention to allusion to travesty) and mise en abyme. The fiction of Anna Karenina transformed by one of Cohen’s heroes, Mangeclous in the eponym novel and in Les Valeureux, is a travesty. Nevertheless if the reader examines this process in an intratextual perspective, he realizes that this transformation is at the same time, because in the travesty of Tolstoy Cohen’s own text (Belle du Seigneur) is mirrored. Thus Karenina’s story in Mangeclous and Les Valeureux is a prolepsis of the fiction of Belle du Seigneur.

In this article, we aim to analyse the representations of the First World War as a cultural trauma in three works of fiction classified as belonging to the “néofantastique” convention, which, according to Jean-Pierre Andrevon, summarises “our fears and uncertainties”. We intend to demonstrate that in La scie patriotique (1997), by Nicole Caligaris, La vigie (1998) and by Thierry Jonquet, Cris (2001) by Laurent Gaudé, the Great War is approached either explicitly or metaphorically, yet at the same time indicative of the phenomena of spectre and abjection. In this article, we propose a synthetic review of the selected studies published at the turn of the 21st century that refer to the phenomena of the relation between language(s) and the literature of Quebec from the 19th century till today. This brief overview of current research on the relations between language(s) and literature(s) shows some directions in the evolution of theoretical approaches: from the political to the aesthetic, from the collective to the individual, from the bipolar to the multidimensional, from the local to the global, through comparative readings. The québécois sociolinguistics, which functions as a theoretical basis for the scholars and critics of literary texts, shows the directions of reflection characterizing the committed attitude of the contemporary sociolinguist (especially from the year 2000 onwards).
