Opis:
Green walls or living walls are architectural installations comprised of plants growing in soil filled, modular panels that are attached to interior or exterior walls. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using green walls to pretreat wastewater generated by small to medium sized food and beverage manufacturers. A 1.2 m high green wall was constructed using two, 610 mm×610 mm panels filled with recycled glass media and planted with Epipremnum aureum. Brewery wastewater was recirculated through the system under four experimental scenarios: media, only; media with bio-film; media with plants; and media with plants and biofilm. Reduction of BOD was at least 65% after 24 hours in all four scenarios. Removal of turbidity, BOD, and total nitrogen was similar in scenarios involving biofilm with or without plants. Green walls appear to offer a space and cost efficient method for pretreating wastewater generated by beverage and food industries.

Opis:
The proper prediction of temporal and spatial variation of sediment yield from the watershed is a need for sediment control, river engineering and soil and water conservation studies. The present study was therefore planned to simulate the sediment graphs for Chehelgazi watershed in Gheshlagh dam upstream in Kurdistan Province, Iran, by using Time-Area Method. Towards this attempt, the study watershed was divided into 7 time-area segments based on the time of concentration. The soil erosion in each segment was estimated using the USLE and then routed to the main outlet using sediment delivery ratio as a function of land slope in two adjacent time-areas. The temporal variation of sediment was ultimately predicted with the help of lag time of sediment arrival to the outlet and the concept of superposition for 11 storm events, which occurred during winter 2006 and spring 2007. The comparison between estimated sediment graphs with corresponding observed ones verifi ed the weak capability of the model in simulation of sediment graphs under consideration. The results also verifi ed the calibration necessity of the model to achieve appropriate estimation for important components of the sediment graphs. The results of the calibration fi nally proved the considerable capability of the model in predicting of total volume of sediment yield with respective estimation and verifi cation errors of 30.93 and 33.40%.
W artykule przedstawiono zastosowanie metody TAM do symulacji zmienności czasowej wydatku rumowiska ze zlewni Chehelgazi, położonej w prowincji Kurdystan w Iranie. Zlewnię Chehelgazi podzielono na 7 zlewni cząstkowych, biorąc za podstawę czas koncentracji odpływu rumowiska. Do wyznaczenia masy rumowiska transportowanego w czasie wezbrania opadowego wykorzystano uniwersalne równanie strat glebowych USLE. Na podstawie sedymentogramów 11 zarejestrowanych wezbrań opadowych przeprowadzono weryfikację i kalibrację metody TAM. Błąd estymacji i weryfikacji całkowitej objętości wydatku rumowiska ze zlewni wyniósł odpowiednio 30.9 i 33.4%.

Opis:
There are several cases in which the measurement of light frequency changes is necessary. For example, it is noteworthy to define the stability of output frequency (wavelength) of a laser beam. Besides, high speed light frequency sensors can be used in optical frequency modulation which has advantages including low cost, high data rate and low noise modulation. Nowadays, for transmitting optical signals, the usual method is converting the message signal to a digital signal and transmitting it with a special digital modulation and after receiving, it will be converted to an analog signal. The mentioned sections are complex and expensive. Sending a digital signal (pulse) through a nonlinear optical medium (optical fiber) may cause undesirable effects such as generating harmonics and energy dispersion in the medium. In this case, we are able to send an analog message as an analog optical signal by a tunable laser diode and receive it by this sensor. Also transmitting digital signals with usual digital modulations such as frequency shift keying will be possible. In this work, we present a new differential light frequency sensor based on an integrated Michelson interferometer whose precision in detecting wavelength changes is less than 0.001 nm.

Opis:
Mulches have extraordinary potential in reducing surface runoff, increasing infiltration of water into the soil and decreasing soil erosion. The straw mulches as a biological material, has the ability to be a significant physical barrier against the impact of raindrops and reduce the detachment of soil aggregates. The present study is an attempt to determine the efficiency of straw mulch as conservation treatment in changes in the splash erosion, time-to-runoff, runoff coefficient, infiltration coefficient, time-to-drainage, drainage coefficient, sediment concentration and soil loss. The laboratory experiments have been conducted for sandy-loam soil taken from deforested area, about 15 km of Warsaw west, Poland under lab conditions with simulated rainfall intensities of 60 and 120 mm·h–1, in 4 soil moistures of 12, 25, 33 and 40% and the slope of 9%. Compared with bare treatments, results of straw mulch application showed the significant conservation effects on splash erosion, runoff coefficient, sediment concentration and soil loss and significant enhancement effects on infiltration and drainage. The results of Spearman-Rho correlation showed the significant (p ≤ 0.05) correlation with r = –0.873, 0.873, 0.878 and 0.764 between rainfall intensity and drainage coefficient, downstream splash, sediment concentration and soil loss and with r = –0.976, 0.927 and –0.927 between initial soil moisture content and time-to-runoff, runoff coefficient and infiltration coefficient, respectively.
Porównując te wyniki z wynikami doświadczenia przeprowadzonego w tych samych warunkach z glebą pozbawioną ściółki, wykazano znaczący wpływ redukujący w odniesieniu do erozji rozbryzgowej, współczynnika odpływu, koncentracji rumowiska i ilości zmywanej gleby oraz znaczący wpływ zwiększający wsiąkanie i odpływ podpowierzchniowy.

Opis:
Although the possibility of measuring and analysing all parts of the rainfall, infiltration, runoff, and erosion process as a natural hydrologic cycle in field conditions is still one of the more unattainable goals in the hydrological sciences, it can be accomplished in laboratory conditions as a way to understand the whole process. The initial moisture content is one of the most effective factors on soil infiltration, runoff, and erosion responses. The present research was conducted on a 2 m2 laboratory plot at a slope of 9% on a typical sandy-loam soil. The effects of the initial soil moisture content on the infiltration, runoff, and erosion processes were studied at four levels of initial soil moisture content (12, 25, 33, and 40 volumetric percentage) and two rainfall intensities (60 and 120 mm h-1). The results showed a significant (p ≤ 0.05) correlation between rainfall intensity and downstream splash, with r = 0.87. The results reflected the theory of hydrological responses, showing significant (p ≤ 0.05) correlations with r =-0.93, 0.98, -0.83, 0.88, and 0.73 between the initial soil moisture content and the time-to-runoff, runoff coefficient, drainage as a part of the infiltrated water, downstream splash, and total outflow sediment, respectively.

Opis:
Nowadays, the development of smart grids has been the focus of attention due to its advantages for power systems. One of the aspects of smart grids defined by using distributed generation (DG) in a low voltage network is a microgrid (MG). Based on its operational states, MG can operate in different configurations such as grid-connected mode or off-grid mode. The switching between these states is one of the challenging issues in this technical area. The fault currents in different buses have higher value compared to islanded mode of MG when the MG is connected to the main grid, which influences the protection equipment. In this situation, some electrical devices may be damaged due to the fault currents. Application of a fault current limiter (FCL) is considered as an effective way to overcome this challenge. The optimal size of these FCLs can optimize the performance of an MG. In this paper, an index for FCL size optimization has been used. In addition, two optimization algorithms (Bat Algorithm and Cuckoo Search Algorithm) have been applied to the problem. The application of an FCL has been studied in grid-connected and islanded-mode. In addition, the application of the capacitor bank in both modes has been investigated. The results of simulations carried out by MATLAB have been presented and compared.

Opis:
There is no special trait for differentiation of Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli from Avian Fecal Escherichia coli. This investigation is aimed, as a case control study, to evaluate and compare the frequency of iss and irp2 in 43 AFEC strains and also 40 and 56 E. coli strains isolated from the liver and kidney of chickens with colibacillosis, respectively, farmed in Zabol, as a border region of Iran, by PCR. 86.9% and 37.2% of isolates collected from chickens with colibacillosis and feces samples obtained from healthy chickens were positive for iss gene, respectively (P<0.05). On average, 59.3% of E. coli strains isolated from colibacillosis have irp2 gene while 27.9% of isolates from the feces of healthy birds were positive (P<0.05). 52.15% of isolates from colibacillosis and 19.62% of isolates from healthy chicken feces were positive for both genes, with statistical significant difference (p<0.05). This marked difference in the distribution of iss and irp2 genes makes these two genes good markers to differentiate AFEC and APEC strains especially in Sistan region to improve colibacillosis control measurements.

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) is a valuable fruit cultivated in the world as an important plant. There are a lot of industries engaged with the drying, processing, quality control and sorting of tomato. A rapid and reliable measurement of qualitative factors of tomato and its products can be a serious necessity for the producers and industrialists. The objective of this research was to implement SERS as a modern technique to evaluate some qualitative parameters of tomato juice. To prevent the effect of cartenoids and florescence background, the juices were centrifuged. Silver colloid was prepared according to Lee and Meisel method for SERS experiments. The results were compared with the spectra obtained from ordinary spontaneous Raman spectroscopy technique data. Three major bands assigned to carbohydrates in tomato were detected and analyzed. Moreover, a medium band related to proteins could be identified. Comparison of SERS spectra with the normal spontaneous Raman spectra proved that SERS has a privilege in the measurement of carbohydrates and proteins as an effective, rapid and precise technique.

Opis:
Ergosan contains 1% alginic acid extracted from two brown sea weeds. Little is known about the target organs and anatomical distribution of Ergosan (alginic acid) in fi sh. Therefore, feasibility of developing alginic acid nanoparticles to detect target organ in rainbow trout is interesting. To make nanoparticles, Ergosan extract (alginic acid) was irradiated at 30 kGy in a cobalt-60 irradiator and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Results from TEM images showed that particle sizes of irradiated alginic acid ranged from 30 to 70 nm. The FTIR results indicated that gamma irradiation had no signifi cant infl uence on the basic structure of alginic acid. Later, alginic acid nanoparticles were successively labelled with 67Ga-gallium chloride. The biodistribution of irradiated Ergosan in normal rainbow trout showed highest uptake in intestine and kidney and then in liver and kidney at 4- and 24-h post injection, respectively. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images also demonstrated target specifi c binding of the tracer at 4- and 24-h post injection. In conclusion, the feed supplemented with alginic acid nanoparticles enhanced SPECT images of gastrointestinal morphology and immunity system in normal rainbow trout.
