    This paper provides a synthetic overview of the research approaches to datę which refer to the sphere of legał and judicial communication, with particular attention given to disciplines such as rhetoric, stylistics and linguistic textology. This overview is aimed at presenting a certain tradition of research on the style of utterances performed in the sphere of legał and judicial communication, on the one hand, and at indicating deficiencies within the discussed issues and description methods employed, on the other hand. The author emphasises the significance of the discussion on the so-called judicial genre in the classical rhetoric and the development - on the ground of Slavic stylistics - of the concept of social functional styles and, in relation to this, the distinction of the so-called administrative style, which includes the legał discourse. She also appreciates the pragmatic and communicative breakthrough in linguistics which occurred in linguistics under the influence of the theory of speech acts by J. L. Austin and J. R. Searle. The combination of research on speech acts with the analysis of the genre and style diversification of utterance seems particularly fruitful when referred to the legał and judicial discourse. The aim of the researcher is also to outline the prospects for further research which might be inspired by achievements on the ground of linguistic genology and new stylistics which take advantage primarily of the pragmalinguistic and cognitive inspirations. The author also points to research areas in which interdisciplinary cooperation between linguists and law theoreticians would be desired.

    The observations described in this páper are concemed with the linguistic discourse analysis carried out by representatives of the contemporary French school, the members o f which include among others: Jean-Michel Adam, Patrick Charaudeau, Catherine Kerbrat-Orecchioni, and Dominique Maingueneau (some of them come from Swiss and Belgian French-speaking communities). The domain of their research, the most impor- tant traditions, as well as the sources of inspiration and relations between the examined field with other scientific disciplines (not only linguistics) are the principál subjects un- der discussion in this páper. The achievements o f the French school in the area o f dis course analysis prove the integrative naturę of the disciplině, which combines various fields of study o f language, style and text, that is in particular: stylistics (including rhetoric and the theory o f a literary work of art), pragmatics and text linguistics. The author demonstrates also the significance o f the relations between discourse analysis and other Sciences: philosophy, cognítive science, psychology and sociology, at the same time emphasizing that the broadly defined inlerdisciplinary studies remain (for various reasons) in the sphere of postulates. Among the many obstacles is the separation of sociál Sciences in the 20lh century.

    Acquiring a knowledge that goes beyond sensual experience (for example, looking through a microscope or telescope) and beyond categories rooted in language, requires a lot of courage, crossing the safe boundaries of the domesticated and designated world.The poetic porte-parole of Wis³awa Szymborska struggles with the experience of crossing these boundaries, which leads to undermining the customary categorisations established in our common language. The author of the paper interprets these poetic transgressions – evoked in the works of the Noble Prize winner – from the linguistic perspective. Namely, she refers them to two concepts of the linguistic categorisation of the world: logical (scientific), originating from Aristotle’s theory, and cognitive, alluding to Immanuel Kant’s philosophy focused on the popular (naïve and culturally determined) image of the world. The paper presents the manner in which devices of artistic expression, such as a metaphor, negation, tautology, gradation, etc., are adopted by the poet to undermine both the popular (stereotypical) qualification of phenomena and scientifically determined category boundaries.

    The subject of the article is the problem of describing the meaning of a word as a symbolic entity that is considered in the context of the requirements of modern lexicography. The analysis of the selected family words in terms of the cognitive, narrative and discursive aspects are intended to release the role of words as “node access” to the conceptual framework in accordance with the cognitive approach to semantics. The author also considers which model of the definition could best reflect the appropriate aspects of the word. The results of the contextual analysis included in the discursive frame enrich the cognitive dimension of the definition of the linguistic category. They reveal the existential experience of people, their perception and evaluation, that is, different domains interact in the conceptualization, which lies not so much in a single word, but in its discursive relationships with others

    This paper analyses international collocations, winged words and aphoristic phrases being components of capitalist discourse, which has been intensively adapted by Poles since 1989, such as: wolny rynek (free market), wolna konkurencja (free competition), własność prywatna (private property), kapitał spekulacyjny (risk capital), prowadzić biznes (to run a business), zaciągnąć kredyt (to take out a loan), niewidzialna ręka rynku (the invisible hand), gra interesów (an interplay of interests), raj podatkowy (a tax haven), pracować w szarej strefie/ na czarno (to work in the grey economy / informal sector), wpaść w spiralę długów (to fall into a debt spiral); Pieniądz nie śpi (Money never sleeps), Kapitał nie ma narodowości (Capital has no nationality), Nie ma darmowych lunchów (There is no such thing as a free lunch), Dajemy wędkę, nie rybę (Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime); Gospodarka, głupcze! (Economy, stupid!). A broad reception of this type of phrases in the colloquial Polish language and their frequent reproductions in journalistic texts and comments published in recent years on popular Polish web portals have been noticed. It has been proved that experts featured in the media (economists, politicians, lawyers, and journalists) shape the collective mentality by means of collocations, which are to a large extent calques of the corresponding expressions and phrases used in English-language texts, reproduced in the discourse. They serve the purpose of imposing a common ideologically conceptualised view of reality on discourse participants. Hence, the quoted collocations are treated in this paper as carriers of the capitalist worldview and a substantial component of communicative competence of public discourse participants, which fulfi ls several significant functions characterised in this paper as: nominative (referential), persuasive and evaluative functions.

    The observations presented in this paper fall within the confines of a plan covering a broader scope of research on the key notions underlying the constitution and polarisation of the Polish economic discourse on popular web portals. The idealised cognitive models (ICMs) of “work”, actualised in the discourse, are subject to a linguistic reconstruction and the methodological principle consists in an analysis of semantic profi les of the key symbol and recurrent collocations as well as the standard phrases invoking the identified central notion. The divergent views on the operation of the economy presented by two distinctive groups of discourse participants: advocates and critics of capitalism provide an important interpretative framework determining the diverse profiling of the category “work” in the online debate. The controversy of the notion manifests itself also in the fact that the two contradictory cognitive models built around it are composed not only of the axioms accepted by a given group but also of the ones it ascribes to their opponents.

    The aim of this paper is to confront the reflections of two famous personages, whose lives and writing activities were developing almost simultaneously over the last century: Emil Cioran (1911–1995), a Romanian philosopher and essayist, and Czesław Miłosz (1911–2004), a Polish poet. The worldview and artistic choices made by both writers in the mature phase of their lives differ significantly, yet what they have in common is experiencing various cultures, first in their homelands in Central and Eastern Europe, and later abroad – in Western countries (France and the USA). These experiences triggered the deep awareness of the relation between the communication style in various areas of the human activity and the culture of a given society, which is shaped by the history and geography and which manifests itself in language and numerous traditional rituals of the community and behaviours of its representatives.Cioran identifies the cultural style with the “good taste” rule system developed by the community, or in fact its model-setting elite. The choice of language and style involves not only specific artistic decisions but also, which is more significant and compliant with the idea of style as a way of thought and action, and not only expression, it is linked to the worldview, which is inscribed in the language code. In his wish to acquire the “French style”, the author of Le Style comme aventure did his best to “lose his memory”: he even forgot how to speak the Romanian language. It is in the tension between the consciously practised French style and the mentality shaped in different cultural conditions that the writer achieves the longed-for distance, which is the essence of art and, in a sense, a privilege of the emigrant status also for Czesław Miłosz. In his collection of essays titled Szukanie ojczyzny, Miłosz emphasises, however, that the “loss of memory” is neither possible nor necessary for achieving such a distance. On the contrary, preserving a relation with the cultural heritage of the environment and epoch in which one was raised is the basis for becoming accustomed with the place of exile and at the same time observing it from a distance. This relation, which manifests itself primarily in the poet’s preserving his “mother tongue” as the language of his literary work, by no means implies artistic determination: Stylistic conventions are, according to the Polish poet, more permanent than the cultural worlds and constitute a space for are lative freedom of choice.

    The paper diagnoses the condition of the contemporary linguistics from the viewpoint of “the power of discourse” and, specifically, the competition of “paradigms” (according to T. Kuhn’s definition) determining the object, goals and methods of research and the manner of presenting knowledge in the discursive community of linguists. Identifying the basic difficulties hindering a change of a paradigm or at least a reconstruction of the hierarchy of the prevalent methodologies in the contemporary linguistics is the aim of the discussions presented in the paper. The author states that linguistics has been at the crossroads of opposite trends, which – to simplify the issue slightly – can be linked with structuralism on the one hand and cognitivism on the other, for some time now. The former paradigm is related to scientism, which imposes the status of an exact, autonomous science limited to grammar on linguistics; the latter one prefers an interdisciplinary approach with the objective of integrating the study of language with other fields of knowledge, and primarily of the operation of the human brain and the process of communication within a community with the use of linguistic symbols, set for linguists. The author proves that the competition of diverse theories and research methods is a manifestation of the desired creativity and openness of linguistics as a discipline within humanities. Negative effects of a given paradigm’s dominance are concerned more with evaluating research works according to traditional criteria imposed by exact sciences.

    After 1989, capitalism – as an ideology (a political system) and a set of practices concentrated in the economic sphere – has strongly shaped interpersonal relationships, linguistic acts and the social picture of the world, including its fundamental values, of Poles in general. The author of this paper makes a preliminary investigation into axio-linguistic aspects in a broader context of the issue related to the reception of the capitalist discourse in the Polish cultural and linguistic space. The connection of this ideological system with values should be considered in regard to three dimensions: 1) in the domain of crucial ideas, such as: liberty, property, individualism, on which capitalism is founded; 2) in the field of positive or negative evaluation dependent on opposite perspectives of discourse participants and related to the different constituents of the formation system, i.e. employed / unemployed, flexible contract/ junk contract, tax/ tribute; 3) in relation to the values encompassed by the Polish tradition, such as: community, justice, equality, solidarity, which can serve as reference points for the anti-capitalist (critical) discourse.

    W okresie od XVI do XVIII wieku Polska (wówczas Królestwo Polskie) była połączona unią polityczną z Litwą (tj. Wielkim Księstwem Litewskim), tworząc państwo nazywane „Rzeczpospolitą Obojga Narodów". W rzeczywistości państwo to jednoczyło na swoim terytorium wiele grup ludności o różnym statusie społecznym, narodowościowym i wyznaniowym; mówiących rozmaitymi językami. Społeczności te rządziły się zróżnicowanymi systemami prawa zwyczajowego oraz regulacjami pochodzącymi od feudalnych władców, zapisanymi w licznych „przywilejach‖ grupowych i indywidualnych. Podczas długiego procesu (zapoczątkowanego już w XIV wieku) tworzenia unii narodów oraz ewolucji ustroju politycznego, zmierzającej do ukonstytuowania tzw. republiki szlacheckiej, musiały ulec zniwelowaniu istotne odmienności lokalne w sferze kultury prawnej. Ważnym czynnikiem łagodzenia procesów unifikacji norm i instytucji prawnych oraz uzyskiwania dla nich społecznej akceptacji było jednakże respektowanie pewnych różnic kulturowych, a zwłaszcza przywiązania obywateli do określonego kodu językowego, w którym formułowano wypowiedzi oficjalne. Intensywne działania kodyfikacyjne wymagały szczególnej wrażliwości ze strony rządzących, a także kompetencji elit kulturalnych w rozwiązywaniu problemów natury komunikacyjnej i translatorskiej. Celem autorki jest przedstawienie tej skomplikowanej sytuacji językowej w kontekście kształtującej się wówczas – także pod wpływem ogólnoeuropejskich dążeń kodyfikacyjnych – kultury prawnej, która zakorzeniła się w świadomości i codziennej praktyce mieszkańców Rzeczpospolitej polskolitewskiej. Jest też fenomenem historycznym wartym zainteresowania z punktu widzenia współczesnych dążeń i problemów wielonarodowej wspólnoty europejskiej.
    In the period from XVI to XVIII century Poland (the Kingdom of Poland at that time) was united with Lithuania (i.e. the Grand Duchy of Lithuania) by a political union, which formed a state named ― the Commonwealth of the Two Nations. In reality the country united numerous population groups of a variety of social, national and confession statuses; and speaking various languages. Those communities were governed by diverse common law systems and regulations originating from feudal rulers, provided in a large number of group and individual ―privileges‖.During the long period of creating the union of the nations and evolution of the political system, which aimed at constituting the so-called Nobles' Republic, significant local diversities in the area of legal culture, particularly in the political, economic and social dimension, had to be eliminated. A crucial factor in alleviating unification processes of legal standards and institutions and gaining social acceptance for them was, however, respecting certain cultural differences, and especially the attachment of the citizens to a particular language code, also in the official and legal sphere. The intensive codification activities required special sensitivity on the rulers' part, as well as thecompetence of cultural élites to solve problems of the communication and translation nature. The purpose of the Author is to present the complex language-related situation in the context of the legal culture forming at that time – also under the influence of Pan-European codification efforts – which became strongly entrenched in the consciousness and daily practice of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's citizens. It is also a historical phenomenon which deserves attention from the point of view of contemporary aims and problems of the multi-national European community.

    Attention was focused on 19th century economic terms of Romance origin, used in the Polish press dedicated to economic matters. These are mainly names acquired from French (also via German), popularised in the 19th century, or words previously borrowed from Latin, but gaining new economic references under the influence of associated and similar Gallicisms. A less abundant, but noticeable layer of Romanisms in economic journalism, are loanwords from Italian, which are internationalisms, mainly preserved, also in the borrowing languages, in their original form. Polonised Italianisms were first assimilated in French (sometimes also in German). This article analyses assimilation methods of foreign common names, such as: phonetic, spelling and inflectional adaptation, replication of foreign morphological and phraseological structures using native formative elements, semantic specialisation of certain names of Latin origin under the influence of related French or Italian lexemes.

    A subject of the article is the meaning of pronominal lexemes, which are treated in general linguistic studies as “non-notional” words or even words deprived of any meaning. In the first part of the article the author proves that pronouns are symbols of general notional categories whereas their substitutional function is subordinated to deixis. In the second part of the article the author presents the proposal at the classification of pronouns according to functional-semantic criteria whereas in the third part she shows a semantic potential of the analyzed class of lexemes as exemplified by the use of indefinite pronoun in selected poetic texts by Wisława Szymborska.

    Opis:
    Przedmiotem obserwacji jest polska leksyka ekonomiczna, używana w dyskursie o gospodarce: rolnictwie, przemyśle, handlu i operacjach finansowych. Jej obecny kształt ze znaczącym udziałem zapożyczeń z języka angielskiego jest wynikiem rozwoju kapitalistycznej formacji społeczno-ekonomicznej. Nowe symbole nawarstwiły się na obfity, wzbogacany przez wieki substrat leksykalny, złożony z jednostek rodzimych oraz germanizmów i latynizmów, także tych o greckiej proweniencji. Celem analizy jest wskazanie tych tendencji rozwojowych w warstwie leksykalnej, których rezultatem jest obecny kształt polskiego dyskursu ekonomicznego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dynamiki, zakresu i charakteru wpływów innojęzycznych. Porównanie statystyczne zasobu leksykalnego trzech tekstów publicystycznych o porównywalnym rozmiarze, reprezentatywnych dla kolejnych okresów rozwoju dyskursu ekonomicznego w polszczyźnie, pozwala stwierdzić, że najszersza asymilacja niesłowiańskich elementów w polskiej leksyce ekonomicznej miała miejsce w XIX wieku.
     The subject of the observation on is the Polish economic lexis used in the discourse on economy: agriculture, industry, trade, and financial operations. Its present composition, with a considerable share of borrowings from English, is an effect of the development of the capitalist socioeconomic formation. New symbols have layered on top of the abundant lexical substratum composed of native units as well as Germanisms and Latinisms, including those of Greek provenance, which has been gradually enriched over the centuries. The aim of the analysis is to identify the development trends in the lexical layer that have evolved into the current Polish economic discourse, with a particular focus on the dynamics, extent, and nature of foreign-language influences. The statistical comparison of the lexical resource of three journalistic texts of similar volumes, representative of successive periods of the development of the economic discourse in the Polish language, permits the ascertainment that the broadest assimilation of non-Slavic components into the Polish economic lexis took place in the 19th century.

    Opis:
    The analysis of the use of the notion of justice in the Polish Constitution proves that in the course of historical development, the designated value was given various conceptual profiles. It was associated mostly with the law within the subjective (‘justified entitlement’) and objective scope (‘legitimacy’), with the judicial authorities (‘fair hearing’), and with the punishment (‘just decision’). Apart from juridical meaning, the notion of justice shall connote ‘equality’ or ‘equal treatment of all people’, including ‘equal justice under law’ or ‘objectivity of a judicial ruling’. Over time the justice gains social and political value which is reflected in the ideal of social justice meant as ‘the equality of all citizens and equal evaluation thereof’. The latter is highlighted in the Polish Constitution (of 1997) where justice is treated as the guiding moral and constitutional principle in the Republic of Poland. The significant profiles of names designating justice in the texts of the Constitution are confronted with the connotations appearing in the questionnaires filled up by the students of the universities in Białystok. In the eyes of young Poles, justice seems to be a human value which is important in their environment an shall be protected by the state.
