Opis:
The specific problem of the Right point of view on Fine Arts has never been discussed by Polish press and other publications. Basically because of politic situation after 1945 but also because the Right showed no interest in the matter. This text focused on opinions published in two basic right-wing journals: “Myśl Narodowa” and “Prosto z Mostu.” At the turn of the century, when the Right started to form, the situation of Polish Art was so strong that it was no need to look for politicians' support. In contrary politicians claimed (Roman Dmowski) that people paid to much attention to Arts instead of taking care of patriotic education and economy development. Art and literature tradition was opposite to civic act. The Right was against individualism created by nineteenth's century liberalism against common slogan “Art for Art” (Jan Gwalbert Pawlikowski). Culture should be organic, fixed together of all forms and relations of the Past and connected with a real place on Earth. It was the Right which created the social interest in the field of environment protection as a Common Good given us by God (Jan Gwalbert Pawlikowski). Therefore the landscape painting and art based on folk roots was highly preferred by the Right. By the way, both kinds of artistic activity developed very well that time. The best example of right wing art preference was “styl zakopiański” created by Stanisław Witkiewicz as a proposal for “National Style.” In the first years of independence after World War One the Right totally neglected culture affairs. ln the mid twentieth the Right started to pay more attention to Arts, but the most important was the fight with foreign influence of French Art mainly. The Right was also against official art supported by the government, first of all against all the artists connected with such public institutions as Instytut Propagandy Sztuki and Towarzystwo Szerzenia Sztuki Polskiej Wśród Obcych. The interest in Art rose in the beginning of thirties just after the breakdown in the Right. The dominant characteristic of right wing in that period was a turn back towards Christian Notions and a distinct close up to the Church. It was a Christian tradition seen as basic roots of Polish culture autonomy, so the Right suggested the Art should get back to it. Weekly magazine “Prosto z Mostu” with its Editor Stanisław Piasecki played the most important role in the creation of right wing ideas in the second half of thirties. Its art critics (Bolesław Miciński, Jerzy Bajkowski, Jerzy Wolff, Tytus Czyżewski) were for Colorist Painting and for straight design art devoted to average public. They claimed the theme in painting is a minor matter. In long lasted discussions about totalitarianism authors of the magazine rarely included specific art problems. In their opinions totalitarian country should only take a social care of artists and should give them public commissions.

Opis:
The Łódź Christian Charity Association operated in Łódź in the years 1885-1940. Its origins go back to the year 1877 and are connected with the foundation of the first charity organization in Łódź called “Support Committee for the Poor” (Pol. abbr. KWB). The aim of the Committee, whose initiators recruited mainly from the circles of affluent bourgeoisie, was broadly understood care and social assistance addressed to the impoverished city residents. Membership fees and voluntary donations constituted a primary income source of the organization, although the funds were also raised through theatrical performances, concerts, balls and funds collections. At the onset of its activity, KWB disposed of the amount of almost 15 thousand ruble, collected among the citizens o f the city, whereas the list of the poor compiled in Łódź for the first time comprised 323 persons in need of immediate help. In 1880, the members of the Committee made a decision about the construction of a shelter for the poor, the old and the invalided persons, but the absence of an appropriate legislative act regulating the activity of the organization, prevented the realization of the project. The Statute of the organization was approved of in 1884 by tsar Alexander III. This event completes an eight-year period of operation of the Support Committee for the Poor. The main directions of social, fostering and educational activity laid out by KWB, were embraced by the Łódź Christian Charity Association, whose name was agreed upon in January 1885. A principal aim and task of the organization became eradication of street beggarhood in the city and granting financial support and aid in kind to the poor residents of Christian denomination. The realization of the laid-out aims was supposed to be achieved by opening institutions with expert knowledge in which the needy might find shelter, care, medical assistance and worthy occupation.

Opis:
Juliusz Starzynski (1906–1974) was an art historian as well as the director of three institutes of art; for almost forty years he held numerous academic and administrative positions and yet, today, he is almost unknown. He studied history of art at the University of Warsaw and simultaneously. After finishing his studies, he concentrated on his academic work, quickly advancing to higher levels. By the time war broke out, he had already been awarded a doctorate and was director of the Institute of Art Propaganda and curator at the National Museum in Warsaw, as well as lecturing in the Department of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Warsaw and at the National Institute of Theatrical Art. After the war started to work at the University of Warsaw and at the Ministry of Art and Culture. In 1949 he initiated the founding of the State Institute of Art, which was transformed in 1959 into the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Starzyński was director from 1949-1960 and again from 1968-1974. During the Stalin years, he was a supporter of socrealism, but as soon as political pressure began to wane, he abandoned this perspective. Internationally, he was very active as a member and deputy chairperson of AICA. He organised exhibitions of Polish art abroad, among other places, at Art Biennale in Venice. After being dismissed from the position of director of the IS PAN as a result of political conflict with the management, he continued to work there, living in France on scholarships, giving lectures there about correspondance des arts during the Romantic Period, and publishing three books on the subject, two in Polish and one in French. From 1950-1970 he was the director of the Institute of the Art History at the University of Warsaw, where he regularly lectured.

Opis:
Rudolf Gustaw Gundlach was born on June 21, 1850 in Paproć Duża near Łomża, located then in the Augustów Governorate. He was raised in an evangelical family which cultivated Protestant ethical traditions. Having left a German secondary school in Warsaw in 1870, he started studying in the Faculty of Theology of the University of Dorpat. On April 18, 1875, he was appointed as an Evangelical clergyman and started working in the Holy Trinity Lutheral Church in Warsaw. Other centres of his pastoral work included parishes in Kamień near Chełm (1876–1889), Wiskitki near Żyrardów (1889–1898), and Łódź (1898–1922). Taking the function of the parish priest in the Holy Trinity Lutheral Church in Łódź in Nowy Rynek (Plac Wolności now), the Reverend R. Gundlach conducted energetic social activities apart from his everyday responsibilities related to pastoral work. He strived to help the poor and the needing, regardless from their religion and nationality. It is worth mentioning that, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Łódź was a multinational city, with population diversified in terms of religion and culture. The community at risk of poverty and no social care included the working class families. For 13 years, since 1907, the Reverend R. Gundlach was the chairman of the philantropic organisation called Łódzkie Chrześcijańskie Towarzystwo Dobroczynności [Łódź Christian Charity Society], which conducted its activities in Łódź in 1885–1940. Together with members and activists of the Society, R. Gundlach organised 17 philantropic institutions for adults and children, including hospitals, clinics, orphanages, schools, tea houses, job centres, old people’s homes, and night shelters. The Reverend Rudolf Gundlach cooperated permanently with the monthly titled “Zwiastun Ewangeliczny”, where he published his works on religious and social issues. He died in Łódź on October 11, 1922.

The “Kropla Mleka” [“Drop of Milk”] institution was established in May 1904 on the initiative of Łódź physicians, Stanisław Serkowski and Józef Maybaum (Marzyński), as a section of the Łódź Branch of the Warsaw Hygienic Association. In this form, the institution operated until 1917, when it became an independent entity called “Kropla Mleka” Society in Łódź. Its goal was to provide hygienic and medical care for babies and children from poor families of workers. The institution distributed cow milk, which was examined bacteriologically, pasteurized, and prepared in proportions suitable for children; however, most of all, physicians in “Kropla Mleka” encouraged mothers to breast-feed their babies. In each distribution centre, there was a clinic consultation centre where medical help was provided to ill children. “Kropla Mleka” in Łódź was the first and 56 Sprawozdanie „Kropli Mleka”… It was meant for the whole society and provided help to all children, regardless from their nationality, religion, social status, or economic status. The years of the World War I, though exceptionally difficult, were the beginning of the most interesting period in the activities of this society. The management board of the institution had to cope with many difficulties, the most important ones being provisioning issues. When analysing the activities of the “Kropla Mleka” Society in Łódź in 1914–1918, one may conclude that, despite complex political, social, and economic conditions, this organization not only continued its mission but it also improved it significantly. The number of milk distribution centres and consultation centres were increased from three up to six, the provision of hygienic care for babies was systematized, older children were included in the activities of the Society by being provided hot meals, and the Society began to provide care for mothers by subsidizing dinners for them. The status of the organization was also regulated; it became a separate, private, and independent entity. Great dedication was shown by physicians-community workers (of various religions) and priests as well as others who joined the activities for the improvement of health and living conditions of children and their mothers.

Opis:
Obesity is called an epidemic of the 21st century; we can observe a global rise in obesity among people regardless of their age. Both doctors and the media alert that the phenomenon of obesityis particularly dangerous for pre‑school children and young students because it increases the risk of physical and emotional problems. Many researchers point that obese children become obese adultswhich results in a stronger probability of diet‑related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, excessive body weight, cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, anemia due to a lack of iron, tooth decay, etc. Fast pace of life, a wide variety of ready‑made foods and the decrease in physical activity lead to unhealthy lifestyle (unhealthy eating habits and passive ways of spending free time). Eating habits which were solidified in childhood lead to the creation of detrimental patterns of eatingwhich are copied in adulthood. Since we do not have the possibility of modifying the genetic factor, which is one of the causes of obesity, teachers, doctors and specialists dealing with obesity among children concentrate on prevention in health education, and in particular on shaping the awarenessof healthy eating habits and lifestyle.
W szczególności budowaniu świadomości właściwych nawyków żywieniowych i zdrowego stylu życia.

Opis:
This article argues that the academic works of Professor Mieczysław Porebski and therefore his views on art and artistic choices constitute a closed set, the framework of which was outlined at the beginning of his work as a critic and art historian. Texts written in his youth were reprinted many years later, the scholar constantly returned to research problems undertaken earlier, and he wrote about artists whom ideologically he had been associated with as early as during the war and immediately after. As he got older new problems and new artists appeared, but they always fi tted into an order established at the beginning of his career. As a scholar, Mieczysław Porebski had indeed a predilection for organizing – for setting boundaries (The Boundary of the Contemporary), defining the rhythms of history (Interregnum), and referring to scientifi c theories (Art and Information). Another characteristic feature of Porebski’s achievements was his very personal approach to the subject of research and to criticism of works of art. He repeatedly stressed that he only studied paintings that he had direct access to and therefore the possibility of contemplation and refl ection. This produced visible and outstanding results during his work at the National Museum in Kraków. Porebski was not so much an excellent curator – in the sense that we now think of this function – but rather the author of carefully planned content-based programmes; he also had an impact on the way exhibitions were displayed. Some went down in the history of Polish twentieth century art, in particular the exhibition Seeing and Understanding (1975). The third element that dominates Professor Porebski’s scholarly and critical legacy was his attitude to Polishness and his thesis on the indelible, Sarmatian quality of our culture and an undeniable weak spot for the work of Jan Matejko. All this meant that the scholar’s attitude towards painting, both that of the old masters and modern, was constant.

Opis:
Since the first half of the 19th century, Łódź became a city with diverse ethnic, and as a result, also linguistic, religious, and cultural structures. That was a consequence of economic factors. During the period of the Second Polish Republic, Poles constituted over a half of the city’s population (62%). The second largest group included Jews (31%) and the third e – Germans (7%). The widely understood issues of childcare, emphasized firmly during the period of partitions, by community workers as well as charity and religious organizations, were addressed in the interwar period with legal regulations on the central administration level and specific organizational solutions adopted by local governments. The taking over of the issue of childcare and child aid by Łódź local authorities did not result in the disappearance of the charitable institutions of various nationalities and religions from the city map. On the contrary, they complemented each other and provided many forms of support, addressed to poor children in particular. One area was that of pre-school education, i.e. the provision of regular care to children aged 3–6, regardless of their nationality or religion. The purpose of this work is to present pre-school educational institutions (kindergartens and shelters), their numbers, manner of establishment, organization, tasks, and forms of activity (also in relation to the families of their pupils), against the background of the ethnic structure of Łódź, which was very diverse at that time. The first date (1924) is the date of establishment of the first shelter initiated by the city (for Polish children) which, apart from tasks related solely to providing care, was also supposed to perform an educational function.

The aid provided by the Roman Catholic Church to residents of Łódźduring the World War I had many aspects and was a part of support provided to those who needed it by many entities of social life. Special care was provided by parish communities to Roman Catholic children, in particular those who were homeless or had been abandoned, orphans, half-orphans, or children from very poor families. Seven out of nine Roman Catholic parishes existing in Łódźin 1914-1918 conducted charitable activities in the form of providing children with meals, healthcare, shoes, clothes, all-day care, or elementary education. Shelters, orphanages, refuges, poorhouses, and cheap eating places were established in parishes. The most active entity was Towarzystwo Schronisk św. Stanisława Kostki [St. Stanislaus Kostka Association of Shelters]located in St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish (it ran 16 charitable institutions for children and the youth). A great credit in this area should also be given to shelters and cheap eating places existing at the following ŁódźRoman Catholic parishes: The Assumption Parish, St. Joseph Parish, St. Anna Parish, St. Casimir Parish, The Transfiguration Parish, and The Sweetest Jesus’ Heart Parish.

Opis:
Oprócz codziennej troski o ich byt materialny, w dalszym ciągu celem podejmowanych działań uczyniono kwestie opieki, wychowania i edukacji podopiecznych, nawet w trudnych realiach wojny. Warunki życia podopiecznych Domu Sierot określał regulamin przyjęty uchwałą Zarządu ŁŻTOS 30 stycznia 1916 r. Przez cały okres I wojny pod dachem Domu Sierot mieszkało około 170 dzieci i młodzieży.
The origins of the Łódź Jewish Society for Providing Care to Orphans (Łódzkie Żydowskie Towarzystwo Opieki nad Sierotami – ŁŻTOS) date back to the period before the World War I and are related to the initiative of the Jewish community, which, in July 1907, applied to register a charitable organization aimed at providing aid to children and young people. The statute of the Society was drawn up. According to the statute, the Society was supposed to take care of the material, moral, and intellectual needs of Jewish orphans. The history of the Society is also related to the history of the Jewish family of Henryk and Zofia Hirszberg, as they were the founders of the building which became the offices of the Society just before the World War I and which was supposed to serve the orphans looked after by the organization. The Orphans’ Home, as that was the name of the centre for children and young people, was located in Łódź at Północna 38. In the face of the numbers of orphans, half-orphans, the abandoned, and the homeless growing day after day in 1914–1918, the mission and the tasks of the Society gained a new meaning. The organization intensified its actions and took children and young people aged 3–18 under the roof of the Orphans’ House. Apart from the day-today care of their material situation, the education and upbringing of the orphans was still the goal of the Society’s actions, even during the difficult times of the war. The living conditions in the Orphans’ Home were specified by the rules adopted by resolution of the Society’s Board on 30 January 1916. During the whole period of the World War I, app. 170 children and young people lived in the Orphans’ Home.

Opis:
„Gniazdo Łódzkie” Childcare Society had its genesis in 1907. Its origins are related to the charity campaign for children of workers from Łódź factories in connection with the revolution of 1905–1907. Members of the Childcare Society in Warsaw [Towarzystwo Opieki nad Dziećmi w Warszawie] became interested with the fate of orphans and half-orphans. During a meeting with Łódź aid providers (mainly physicians and clergymen) in February 1907 in Łódź, it was decided that a cooperation would be started and that the Łódź division of the Childcare Society would be opened with the name of „Gniazdo Łódzkie”. The first orphanage for children „with no home or care” was opened by the Society in July 1907 at Milscha 16 (at present, Kopernika street), in a leased tenement house. Over 30 children lived there; after a year, these numbers have increased up to 50. In 1914–1918, the number of residents was about 100. The Society took care of orphaned, homeless, and begging children (aged 4–10); with time, it also provided care to children of ill, crippled, or mentally disabled parents. Just before the outbreak of the World War I, the residents of „Gniazdo Łódzkie” Childcare Society moved to their own home build in Kały near Łódź, where an orphanage and a school were organized. The children lived in that new house for a few months only; in November 1914, the house was completely destroyed as a result of military action around Łódź. Then, residents of „Gniazdo Łódzkie” were moved to Łódź; they lived in „Dom Ludowy” of Christian Workers’ Association [Stowarzyszenie Robotników Chrześcijańskich] at Przejazd 34 (at present, Tuwima street). They ate in cheap soup kitchens. The Society tried to provide children from „Gniazdo Łódzkie” with optimum living conditions, also in the areas of care, education, health, and hygiene, during the war as well. Due to economic and organizational reasons, that was not an easy task. Among members of the Society, there were people who continued to provide care to orphans and homeless children even during the difficult years of German occupation.
