Opis:
The water conductivity of arctic zone soils derived in different micro-relief forms was determined. The greatest water conductivity at the 0-5 cm depth for the higher values of water potentials (> -7 kJ m-3) was shown by tundra polygons (Brunic-Turbic Cryosol, Arenic) – 904-0.09 cm day-1, whereas the lowest were exhibited by Turbic Cryosols – 95-0.05 cm day-1. Between -16 and -100 kJ m-3, the water conductivity for tundra polygons rapidly decreased to 0.0001 cm day-1, whereas their decrease for the other forms was much lower and in consequence the values were 0.007, 0.04, and 0.01 cm day-1 for the mud boils (Turbic Cryosol (Siltic, Skeletic)), cell forms (Turbic Cryosol (Siltic, Skeletic)), and sorted circles (Turbic Cryosol (Skeletic)), respectively. In the 10-15 cm layer, the shape of water conducti-vity curves for the higher values of water potentials is nearly the same as for the upper layer. Similarly, the water conductivity is the highest – 0.2 cm day-1 for tundra polygons. For the lower water potentials, the differences in water conductivity increase to the decrease of soil water potential. At the lowest potential the water conductivity is the highest for sorted circles – 0.02 cm day-1 and the lowest in tundra polygons – 0.00002 cm day-1.

Opis:
The improper adjustment of the release characteristics of commonly used mineral fertilizers to the nutritional requirements of plants results in the loss of a significant part of them by infiltration into the soil profile or in the form of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Legal regulations including the national emission ceilings directive, require the Member States of European Union to limit ammonia emissions from agriculture. In order to minimize the losses of valuable nutrients and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions it is necessary to find new solutions and technologies in agriculture. Specialists emphasize the beneficial effects of localized fertilization methods and the use of the slow-release/controlled-release fertilizers. Field studies conducted on newly obtained fertilizers prove their beneficial effect on the quality and quantity of the crop but currently the products offered on the market are too expensive to use in large acreage crops. This article presents an overview of some particular economic, legal and practical aspects of slow-release fertilizer production and use. Additionally, the results of field tests indicating their beneficial effect on plant yield, the plant response to stressful conditions and methods for environmental protection are also presented.

Opis:
This paper presents the aim and realization procedures of the project EURO- ACCESS (Agroclimatic Change and European Soil Suitability, No. EV5VCT920129, CIPA3510PL923399, CIPDCT930022, CIPDCT925058, financed by EC). The project was coordinated by Dr. Peter Loveland, Soil Survey and Land Research Centre. Crarifield University, Silsoe Campus, Bedford, Great Britain. The project was conducted in 1992-1995 by scientific institutes from 6 countries, including the Institute of Agrophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences in Lublin. This book consists of main information about the whole project and detailed information about, tasks performed by the Institute of Agrophysics, PAS in cooperation with the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation (IUNG) Puławy as well as with other European institutes. There are presented results of investigations conducted in cooperation with ADAS Land Centre, Gleadthorpe Research Centre, Meden Vale, Mansfield, Great Britain, (Chapt. 2: Modelling of water movement in the soil profile with the preferential flow influence.), Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Lublin, Poland (Chapter 3: The method of rainfall intensity estimation for runoff prediction), INRA Montpellier, Prance and IUNG Puławy, Poland (Chapter 4: Verification of yield prediction model using soil and climatic data). The basic task of EURO-ACCESSS project was the model and program development for prediction of climate change influence onto potential yield of important crops. The climatic and physiological properties are assumed to be known. In hydrological submodel developed in ADAS, Mansfield, there was Richards one dimensional flow model assumed. In order to include heterogeneity of the soil the submodel of bypass flow was created by IA PAS and included into existing one dimensional flow procedure. The horizontal infiltration submodel is based on Green- Ampt simplified flow model. It plays role of source and/or sink term within the Richards procedure and accounts for the bypass flow of water from the surface to the deeper layers of the soil profile. The model has been verified in the laboratory conditions, on the basis of numerical experiments and in the field condition. Laboratory flow experiment with induced cracks shows the possibility of explanation of bypass flow with developed procedure. Numerical experiment shows ade- quateness of proposed crack and inaeropore description to the field data. The model allows easily estimate macropore parameters from the simple measurements at the soil surface or from the profile cross-section. The calibration of the model on the basis of measured data consisting soil moistures at different depths and precipitation data, soil hydraulic properties and évapotranspiration data, shows better agreement with the bypass flow model included. The main problem was to estimate momentary rain intensity from the daily precipitation data available. This was done using the statistical model of the rain intensity distribution. The momentary rain intensity plays major role in the runoff estimation. On the basis of long term (1982-1993) historical precipitation, climatic and yield data collected in IUNG Puławy, the whole EURO-ACCESS II has been verified. The plant submodel based on EPIC model was modified and suited to European conditions by INRA, Montpellier. The whole verification was conducted on the basis of daily climatic data. The error analysis shows that, during 1985-1990 period when model was calibrated estimated yield error was 22,5%-, for the period 1984 and 1991 1993 where model was verified the yield error was 8.0%. For the whole period of simulation the error was 15.3%.

The paper deals with the analysis of deformation of a rivet hole in a riveted joint after the manual dynamic riveting process. For many years, riveting remains a traditional and the most popular method ofjoining in aircraft structures. The residual stress and strain state appear at the rivet hole after the riveting process, which improves the joint's fatigue behaviour. The local finite element models are made with Patran. The rivet and sheets are described using eight-noded, three-dimensional brick elements. The riveting tools consist of four-noded, two-dimensional shell elements. Numerical FE simulations of the upsetting process are carried out using the Ls-Dyna code. The contact with friction is defined between the collaborating parts of the specimen. The results of simulations of the dynamic riveting process of a mushroom rivet with and without a compensator are compared in this paper. Hole deformation of the upper and lower sheet, squeezing force, as well as deformations of the rivet head are analysed. The influence of the compensator on strain and displacement states is studied. Simulation shows that some technological factors may have positive influence on the residual stress fields. Using the rivet with a compensator results in a better rivet hole filling capability. The rivet hole displacement in upper and lower sheets are at the same level. Paper also present manual dynamic riveting process of reverse and standard riveting procedure and model of riveted specimen.

Opis:
The aim of the project was to improve fatigue performance of riveted joints in airframes. Fatigue strength of a joint depends on structural, material and manufacturing factors. The project involved numerical and experimental analysis of material factors and manufacturing imperfections. The paper deals with the analysis of material structure and properties by means of the optical and SE methods. Static monotonic tests for sheet and rivet materials were carried out. ARAMIS optical system was used for the study of deformation and strain fields in the material during loading. This tool offers the possibility of a non-contact measurement with 3D image correlation methods (digital image correlation, DIC) using high-resolution digital CCD cameras. In ductile materials (such as aluminium alloy), subjected to appropriate loading conditions, voids may form, which grow and coalesce leading to crack formation and potential failure. A micro crack may be initiated at the inclusion particles and then voids grow around it. Experimental studies showed that these processes are strongly influenced by hydrostatic stress (Gurson’s material model). SEM analysis of material structure was carried out after performing static tests. In the paper, the authors present the influence of a material model on the results of numerical simulation of the tensile loaded samples with open and riveted holes. The application of Gurson’s material model allows observation of crack growth in the sample cross-section and determination of the sheet rupture as the moment when constraint force decreases to zero (material separation occurs).
