    Opis:
    Vocational education was one of the most important stages of the educational system in those days, as it is today. In the interwar period vocational education took on a special significance, because with its help efforts were made to pursue specific educational goals aimed at shaping the attitudes that were then in force, defined as civic and patriotic. The analysis presented below shows the educational goals in reference to youth schools (Cracow vocational schools) focused mainly on youth organisations. Among the most important are Polish scouts. A wide organisational movement was developed alongside it, focusing on military and defense issues, touring, tourism, and sport and recreation. The organisational activities carried out within them were aimed at building strictly defined patterns of citizenship and patriotism among the local youth, which could help in defending their own homeland.

    Opis:
    Universities in Santiago and La Serena in Chile have taken the initiative to establish a research institute whose task will be to collect and develop documentation on the attainments of Ignacy Domeyko – a Pole and an honoured reformer of Chilean education. He arrived in Chile at the invitation of the Chilean government and since 1838 he lived in Coquimbo, where he taught chemistry and mineralogy at a local secondary school and organized research laboratories. Since 1846 he worked at the University of Santiago, where he served as rector three times. This role gave him the opportunity to introduce in Chilean schools a curriculum reform and new teaching methods modelled on European experiences. Domeyko made a significant contribution to the development of science in Chile, he was also interested in the development of mines and geology in the western part of South America. He was a member of many international scientific societies and the Academy of Sciences in Kraków. In recognition of merit, Ignacy Domeyko was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Jagiellonian University.

    Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przedstawienie nauczycieli Szkoły Ćwiczeń związanych z krakowskim Pedagogium oraz ukazanie roli, jaką odegrali w kształceniu przyszłych elit intelektualnych Krakowa. W większości przypadków opisano tutaj nauczycieli, którzy związali swoje całe życie zawodowe ze wspomnianą Szkołą Ćwiczeń, będącą ważnym miejscem zajęć praktycznych dla Państwowego Pedagogium i Państwowej Wyższej Szkoły Pedagogicznej w Krakowie. Takim przykładem może być jej dyrektor Rudolf Hajnos, kierujący szkołą w okresie międzywojennym. Szkoła Ćwiczeń krakowskiego Pedagogium mieściła się przy ul. Straszewskiego 22 i początkowo była czterooddziałową szkołą powszechną. W spisie placówek szkolnych przygotowanym przez Mariana Falskiego w 1933 roku wymieniono ją w grupie państwowych niższych szkół ogólnokształcących o siedmioklasowym cyklu nauczania, z gronem dziewięciu nauczycieli i 127 uczniów. W swoim posiadaniu miała cztery sale lekcyjne o niezbyt dużej powierzchni. Nauczycieli starano się przedstawić w szerokim kontekście ich pracy pedagogicznej oraz wkładu w proces nauczania. Nie zapomniano też o omówieniu ich pasji oraz osobistych sukcesów naukowych i artystycznych. Przedstawiony tutaj materiał odwołuje się do źródeł, które uzupełniono o publikacje oraz wywiady przeprowadzone z absolwentami Szkoły Ćwiczeń.
    The aim of this study is to present the profiles of the teachers of the Training School associated with the Pedagogium of Cracow and to show the role they played in the education of the future intellectual elite of Cracow. The paper describes the teachers who tied their professional life with the Training School, an important place for practical classes of the students of the State Pedagogium and the State Pedagogical College of Cracow. As an example one could present Rudolf Hajnos, who was the head of the School in the interwar period. The Training School of the Pedagogium of Cracow was located at 22 Straszewskiego Street and was initially a four-class elementary school. The list of schools prepared by Marian Falski in 1933 listed the school among the state lower general schools of seven-class learning cycle, nine teachers and 127 students. The school owned four modest classrooms and the teachers of the Training School are shown in a broad context of their pedagogical work and contribution to the learning process. Of the same importance are their passions and personal success in scientific and artistic fields. The paper is based on primary source research, supplemented by publications and interviews with graduates from the Training School.

    In the second half of the 19 century in the Polish territory appearred a numerous of foundations and institutions for children and adults welfare. It is worth to mention operation of August Józef Iliński in Równe (Wołyń) and clergyman Jakub Falkowski, which in 1917 contributed to the establisment of Institute for Deaf People in Warsaw. Since 1917 in Cracow was functioning Benevolent Society which was managing numerous endowments received by Cracow hospitals. The Society was running an extensive charitable activity, a school, shelters for the orphans and old people. It organized also purchase of food, clothing, combustible and medicins for the poor. Siemaszko's Institution for Boys in Długa Street and Prądnicka Street owns its existence to generosity of the benefactors.A4-class-school, workshops and accomodation for 400 boys were run by this institution. It is worth to mention St. Joseph's Institution for the orphaned boys, which existed owing to Piotr Michałowski's endowment, and the initiatives of Henryk Jordan having aimed to an establisment of Society for Catholic Workers' Cheap Accomodation as well as Jordan's public garden eagerly visited by Cracow dwellers until now. Among the most significant individual endowments of the most remarkable is a 2 million franc legacy of Aleksander Lubomirski for an establisment of an educational institution for the neglected boys in Rakowiecka Street, and House of the Poor initiated owing to benevolence ofAnna and Ludwik Helcel.

    The paper focuses on research into vocational education in Krakow. The state of the art as well as the perspectives are presented. The main part provides a detailed analysis of the historical materials collected in Ukraine’s Central State Historical Archives in Lviv with enormous resources titled the National School Board. The achievements of the Polish sustem of education, specifically the development of vocational schools in Krakow,  are presented in details based on these resources.  A general overview shows the cognitive value of the specific collections (sets) in relation to one of the most important scientific and educational centres in Galicia in southern Poland.

    W artykule przedstawiono odniesienia do europejskich, czy światowych doświadczeń w obrębie pedagogiki nowego wychowania. Czyniono to najczęściej za pośrednictwem czasopism naukowych lub popularnonaukowych. Do jednego z nich należał „Ruch Pedagogiczny” redagowany przez Henryka Rowida, autora koncepcji szkoły pracy. Na jego łamach prezentowano aktualne poglądy takich pedagogów, jak: J. Deweya, G. Kerschensteinera, H. Parkhurst, Owidiusza J. Decroly᾽ego, Rudolfa Steinera i innych. Poprzez „Ruch Pedagogiczny” starano się zachęcać całe środowisko nauczycielskie do odejścia od tradycyjnych metod nauczania i wychowania (mających swoje oparcie w dziewiętnastowiecznym herbartyzmie) na rzecz nowatorstwa pedagogicznego.
    The article presents references to European and world experiences in the field of pedagogy “New Education”, which were most often presented through scientific or popular science journals. One of them was the “Ruch Pedagogiczny” (The Pedagogical Movement), edited by Henryk Rowid, the author of the concept of the “school of work”. In this journal were published articles presenting pedagogical views of such educators as John Dewey, Georg Kerschensteiner, Helen Parkhurst, Ovide J. Declory, Rudolf Steiner and others. The articles published in “The Pedagogical Movement” were aimed at encouraging teachers to abandon traditional teaching and education methods (based on the assumptions of Herbart’s 19th century pedagogy) and to choose innovative pedagogical solutions.

    Wprowadzenie. W opracowaniu odniesiono się do młodości, wykształcenia i życia rodzinnego Zygmunta Ruty, jednego z najwybitniejszych profesorów krakowskiego środowiska naukowego. W części zasadniczej przedstawiono dorobek naukowy prof. Z. Ruty oraz starano się pokazać jego wpływ na losy współczesnej pedagogiki. Nie zapomniano też o jego związkach z dzisiejszym Uniwersytetem Pedagogicznym w Krakowie, które wyrażały się w licznych prac naukowych oraz sumienności w wykonywaniu zadań nauczyciela akademickiego. Cele. Celem niniejszego opracowania było zaprezentowanie postaci jednego z bardziej znanych pedagogów i historyków wychowania. Osoby wybitnej i szlachetnej, zajmującej się dziejami edukacji w różnych jej aspektach, nie tylko historycznym. Materiały i metody. W opracowaniu wykorzystano metody: porównawczą i retrospektywną, pozwalające zweryfikować dostępność źródeł i istniejące opracowania, w których zaprezentowano dorobek naukowy prof. Z. Ruty, jako znanego pedagoga i historyka wychowania. Wyniki. W artykule ukazano jednego z najbardziej cenionych profesorów, nauczycieli i wychowawców związanych z Uniwersytetem Pedagogicznym w Krakowie.
    Introduction. T he text refers to the youth, education, and family life of Zygmunt Ruta, one of the most outstanding professors of Krakow academia. The main part presents his scientific achievements and his influence on the modern pedagogy. The author also explores Professor Ruta’s connections with today’s Pedagogical University of Krakow, which resulted in numerous scientific works and years of thorough academic teaching. Aim. T he goal of the text is to present one of the most renown pedagogues and historians of education. Professor Ruta was a remarkable and noble person, expert in education and its various aspects, not only historical. Materials and methods. In order to prepare the text, the comparative and retrospective methods were used. They facilitated the verification of the available sources and existing publications in which the scientific achievements and the person of Professor Zygmunt Ruta – a renown pedagogue and historian of education – are presented. Results. T he paper presents one of the most acknowledged professors, teachers and educators connected with the Pedagogical University of Krakow.

    Aim: The main goal of the research was to prepare and present the current catalog of historians of education, taking into account 3 groups of scientists: currently employed, previously working in a given unit and nowadays associated with another teaching and research institution, retired. Methods: The term “historian of education” was defined as a researcher in the field of history of education, an editor of sources, an academic teacher and a researcher practicing methodological reflection in relation to their own scientific discipline. The scope of the research covered all Polish academic centers with research teams dealing with the history of education in their structure. Results: The main part of the list presents: the name and surname of the historian of education, degree and academic title, the organizational unit of the university (research facility, chairs, institute, department) and the city being the seat of the university. The characteristics were extended to include the historical context presenting individual centers dealing with the history of education. Conclusions: In summary, Polish universities currently employ 137 historians of education, 59 retired academics and 50 researchers who have found a different place of employment than originally.

    The Lesser Poland Department was created by the Commission of National Education in 1783. That year, the territorial organisation of the school network was established, department school authorities were appointed and teaching staff were employed. The Lesser Poland Department included the academic department school in Lublin, academic subdepartment schools in Kraków, Pińczów and Sandomierz and subdepartment schools run by religious orders in Kielce, Krasnystaw and Stężyca. This article is an attempt at characterising the educational facilities operating in the Lesser Poland Department and their organisational and educational issues with structural transformations, material base, teaching plans and programmes, textbooks, educational process and school inspections. Considerable attention was paid to the principles of youth education, school authorities, teachers and the student community. Efforts were also made to show the role of the presented facilities in local communities.
