Books on bird-human relationship are rare among popular pet memoirs, as most of them are devoted to dogs or cats. The present article discusses two books, whose authors, American biologists, have decided to fill in this gap with accounts of their intimate bond with an adopted pet bird. Mingling memoir and science, Joanna Burger in The Parrot Who Owns Me: The Story of a Relationship (2001) and Stacey O’Brien in Wesley the Owl (2008) present stories of love which transcends the boundary of species. For a biologist, sharing a life with a bird offers a unique opportunity to study wild birds’ social behavior in the domestic environment. Unlike dogs and cats that share with humans a long history of domestication, a Red-Lored Amazon (Tiko) or a Barn Owl (Wesley) are inherently wild and can be befriended only on their own terms. Over the years, the birds come to treat their women-owners as closest companions or even mates, proving with their complex behavior that they are indeed intelligent, emotional and caring creatures. To strengthen the bond, Burger and O’Brien willingly participate in daily preening sessions. Much less willingly, they acquiesce to become the objects of the bird’s courting rituals. In the memoirs, Tiko and Wesley enjoy the status of family members, of thinking and emotional individuals whose needs and feelings deserve to be respected. Both authors are aware of the anthropomorphic point of view they adopt, however, they defend their perspective on the grounds of personal experience and scientific research. Thus, by showing the similarities between emotional and social life of human and non-human animals the books question the main assumptions of anthropocentric approach.

Opis:
The purpose of the present paper is to analyse epistolary and descriptive conventions in Journal and Letters, from France and Great Britain (1833) by Emma Willard. The article argues that Willard attempts to combine the standards of 18th-century travelogue with its emphasis on instruction with a new type of autobiographical travel narrative which puts the persona of a traveller in the foreground. In this respect, Willard’s Journal and Travels, for all its didacticism, testifies to an increasing value attached to subjective experience, which was to become one of the distinguishing features of nineteenth-century travel writing.

Polish Otaku Culture Towards Japanese Sources Japanese otaku is a geek or nerd, who is strongly dependent on the products of Japanese pop culture from the circle of anime and manga. Such a unit subjugates all other areas of life to this passion, which means that he or she is willing to sacrifice everything for cultivating the interest, which from an ordinary hobby turned into a way of life. Japanese otaku has their own world, a virtual one, which often causes problems with establishing contacts with the real world. Polish otaku however is only a fan, a person who has a unique hobby. Such a person does not sacrifice everything to their hobby and only treats it as something you can do in your free time. He or she is able to reconcile reality with fiction without sacrificing any of them. Such great differences between the two subcultures of otaku are due to different mentality of their members and various understanding of the term otaku. This causes different treatment of themselves and ways in which both subcultures otaku manifest themselves. Furthermore, the lack of awareness about Japanese otaku subculture in the minds of the representatives of Polish otaku subculture results in the creation of the group completely different from its original.

The article analyses generic conventions, gender constraints and authorial self-definition in two ante-bellum American travel accounts – Emma Hart Willard’s Journal and Letters, from France and Great Britain (1833) and Catharine Maria Sedgwick’s Letters from Abroad to Kindred at Home (1841). Emma Hart Willard, a pioneer in women’s higher education and Catharine Maria Sedgwick, an author of sentimental novels, were influential figures of the Early Republic, active in the literary public sphere. Narrative personas adopted in their travel letters have been shaped by the authors’ national identity on the one hand and by ideals of republican motherhood, which they propagated, on the other. Both travelogues are preceded with apologies filled with self-deprecating rhetoric, typical for women’s travel writing in the early 19th century and both are intended to instruct the American reader. Other conventional features of American antebellum travel writing include comparisons between British and American government and society with a view of extolling the latter as well as avid interest in social status and public activities of European women. Willard and Sedgwick deal with possible gender anxieties of their upper middle-class female readers by assuring them that following one’s literary or educational vocation in the public sphere does necessarily mean compromising ideals of true womanhood in private life.

On 1 May 2004 Poland will become a fully-fledged member of the European Union. The Process of adjusting law, institutions and operating modes to the EU requirements can be termed as the Europeanisation. The article concentrates on the Europeanisation as a shaping Power of institutional change in Poland. Its target is to assess the institutional performance of both state and non-state stakeholders involved in the design and implementation of the cohesion policy, i.e. regional policy and environmental policy, mainly at sub-national level. It where both policies, which operate in a very decentralised matter, are conducted. The article draws from the outcome of the international research project co-financed by the European Union, the author participated in. The project was focused on the EU enlargement and multi-level governance. It identified patterns of institutional learning and Europeanisation among cohesion countries and formulated lessons for new members (Poland and Hungary). The interactions between EU and domestic policy-making structures were examined, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in a selected region - the Lodz Voivodeship in Poland.

The article depicts the role of European Union in the world economy in the light of globalization processes. It diagnoses many facets of the poor competitiveness of the integrated Europe such as economic performance, labour productivity as well as R&D input and output. On the grounds of the tentative assessment, some priorities for the future are drawn.

The aim of the article is to describe the institutional and legal aspects of the budgetary procedure: the stages in the decision-making process, the respective powers of the budgetary authority (European Parliament and Council), the issue of the amendments of the budget and the consequences of its rejection. It also looks at how the procedure has evolved in the light of interinstitutional agreements. The article sheds light on the provisions of the treaty establishing constitution for Europe and evaluates the status quo and the proposed modifications.

The main statistics of so called "civilization diseases" morbidity, in particular tumor and circulatory system diseases have been presented for selected industrial agglomerations; the reasons lying behind those statistics were discussed in detail. Opis:
Metaphors and colours can support a description of the organization culture and management styles, and between these descriptions are visible relations. Therefore, there are two highly developed management styles, green and turquoise. In these concepts, some different values are applied to employees, not just to innovative equipment and technology. The main difference between green and teal (turquoise) management is that the source of the organisation performance is intertwined with the all characteristics of the organisation’s members. The article presents the stages of development of management styles included in the colour characteristic of certain types of organizations, from the most basic to intelligent. There are different models of organizations which can be also described in the evolutionary approach. The purpose of the article is to provide descriptions of management styles specific to green and turquoise organizations.
Metafory i kolory mogą wspierać opis kultury organizacyjnej i stylów zarządzania, czasem uwidaczniając relacje między nimi. W związku z tym, istnieją dwa najwyżej rozwinięte style zarządzania: zielony i turkusowy. W tych koncepcjach różne, określone wartości dotyczą pracowników, a nie innowacyjnego sprzętu i technologii. Główna różnica między zarządzaniem zielonym a turkusowym polega na tym, że źródło wyników organizacji jest powiązane ze wszystkimi cechami członków organizacji. W artykule przedstawiono etapy rozwoju stylów zarządzania zawartych w charakterystyce kolorystycznej niektórych rodzajów organizacji – od najbardziej podstawowych po inteligentne. Istnieją różne modele organizacji, które można również opisać w podejściu ewolucyjnym. Celem tego artykułu jest przedstawienie stylów zarządzania specyficznych dla organizacji zielonych i turkusowych.

Głównym motorem rozwoju gospodarczego są i nadal będą innowacje, zwłaszcza innowacje ekologiczne i społeczne. Celem autorek opracowania było dokonanie analizy wybranych aspektów innowacji ekologicznych (ekoinnowacji), szczególnie w dwóch okresach, tj. 2006–2008 oraz 2009–2014 Na podstawie literatury przedmiotu nie tylko scharakteryzowano istotę ekoinnowacji, ale również wskazano możliwości i utrudnienia w ich realizacji. Zwrócono również uwagę na rozwój innowacji ekologicznych w Polsce oraz przedsiębiorstwa, które wprowadziły ekoinnowacje. W opracowaniu wykorzystano: (1) metodę opisową, polegającą na wyodrębnieniu i opisaniu określonego zjawiska, jakim jest wpływ stosowanych inicjatyw społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu dla ekoinnowacji, oraz (2) analizę porównawczą, dzięki której możliwe było wskazanie na wszelkie zmiany i nieprawidłowości oraz odchylenia od przyjętych norm. Wyniki badań przedstawiono w układzie tabelarycznym.
The main engine of economic development are and will be innovations, especially ecological and social innovations. The aim of the study is to analyze ecological innovations used in Polish enterprises. This article presents an analysis of selected aspects of eco-innovation. Based on the literature on the subject, the essence of eco-innovation was characterized and the possibilities and difficulties in their implementation were indicated. The study analyzed the measurement of innovations in Poland in two periods, e.g. 2006–2008 and 2009–2014. Then, it was pointed to the development of eco-innovations in Poland and enterprises that introduced eco-innovations. The article uses a descriptive method. It consists of the identification and description of a specific phenomenon, which is the impact of the implemented corporate social responsibility initiatives for eco-innovation. In the further part of the study, a comparative analysis was used, thanks to which any changes and irregularities as well as deviations from accepted norms were indicated. The test results are presented in a tabular format.

Artykuł jest analizą innowacji ekologicznych (ekoinnowacji) z punktu widzenia zrównoważonego rozwoju. Zostały w nim zaprezentowane pojęcia innowacji oraz ekoinnowacji, a przede wszystkim ich rozwój na przestrzeni lat, a także pojęcie zrównoważonego rozwoju. W świetle idei zrównoważonego rozwoju przedstawiona została analiza ekoinnowacji – innowacje ekologiczne są bowiem obecnie warunkiem zapewnienia możliwości rozwoju gospodarczego. Analiza ta pokazuje poziom innowacyjności polskiej gospodarki oraz źródła finansowania działalności innowacyjnej przedsiębiorstw w Polsce.
In the future eco-innovations will be the main driver of economic development. The aim of the chapter is to indicate the essence and growing importance of eco-innovation (ecological innovations) for sustainable development. This chapter presents an analysis of selected aspects of eco-innovation (eco-innovation) based on the literature of the subject. It also discusses the essence of eco-innovation in the aspect of environmental order. In the research section, the relationship between environmental governance and eco-innovation was discussed on the example of selected countries.

Celem niniejszego opracowania jest ukazanie znaczenia wdrażania innowacji ekologicznych (ekoinnowacji) jako części składowej jednego z filarów prowadzenia działalności gospodarczej. W artykule poddano analizie Model 3E jako model zarządzania współczesnym przedsiębiorstwem. Wskazano w nim na znaczenie działań proekologicznych. W dalszej części omówiono rolę ekoinnowacji z uwzględnieniem ekoinnowacji społecznych. Następnie zaprezentowano metody pomiaru innowacji ekologicznych. W pracy zastosowano metodę opartą na analizie dostępnych materiałów źródłowych, a następnie na analizie danych statystycznych.
The purpose of this article is to indicate the importance of eco-innovation in managing a modern enterprise. Model 3E as a modern company management model has been discusses in the first part. In this model, the importance of pro-ecological activities was pointed out. In the further part of the study, the role of ecological innovations, including social Eco-innovations, was analysed. Then, the methods of measuring ecological innovations were presented. The article uses a method based on the analysis of available source materials, and then on the analysis of statistical data.

Jest więc monografia kolejnym głosem, miejmy nadzieję udanym, w dyskusji, która toczy się wokół inspiracji i przesłanek, idei i koncepcji, metod i technik oraz rezultatów w obszarze innowacyjnych sposobów zarządzania współczesnymi organizacjami. Background: The study concerned workplace mobbing, a phenomenon affecting about 3–20% of the Polish population. The aim of the article is to distinguish the manifestations of mobbing, to study the coexistence of mobbing manifestations, and to search for the relationships between the symptoms of mobbing, reactions to mobbing and methods of dealing with mobbing used by victims. Material and Methods: Information on the above variables was obtained using a questionnaire on mobbing, risk factors, and responses to mobbing. The questionnaire was completed by 781 people (women: 66%, men: 34%). The average age of the respondents was 29 years. The current statistical analysis included: distinguishing the manifestations of mobbing by means of a confirmatory factor analysis, studying the coexistence of mobbing manifestations by means of a cluster analysis, and detecting the relationships between mobbing manifestations, reactions to mobbing and ways of dealing with it based on the system of structural equations. Results: The results of the research revealed 3 categories of relationships: a co-occurrence of mobbing manifestations, a relationship of mobbing manifestations with reactions to mobbing, and a relationship of mobbing reactions with methods of dealing with mobbing. Conclusions: Mobbing was found in 22% of the examined group. The study revealed the existence of 5 clusters of mobbing manifestations (i.e., subgroups of respondents characterized by experiencing at least 1 of the mobbing manifestations). In the most numerous clusters in which the symptoms of mobbing were diagnosed, unfriendly working conditions prevailed. In the context of mobbing, people were found to more often react with passivity or with using interpersonal coping methods. However, they rarely turned to institutions for help or used aggression against the mobber. Med Pr. 2022;73(1):1–12
