Opis:
The present work investigates the possibility of using powder metallurgy processing for producing a metal matrix composite. Materials were prepared from AlSi5Cu2 chips with reinforcement of 10, 15, 20 wt. % silicon carbide. Aluminum alloy chips were milled with SiC powder in a high-energy ball mill by 40 hours. Mechanical alloying process lead to obtain an uniform distribution of hard SiC particles in the metallic matrix and refine the grain size. The consolidation of composite powders was performed by vacuum hot pressing at 450°C, under pressure of 600 MPa by 10 min. The results shows that the addition of SiC particles has a substantial influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of composite powder as well as consolidated material. Hot pressing is an effective consolidation method which leads to obtain dense AlSi5Cu2/SiC composite with homogeneous structure and advanced mechanical properties.

Opis:
The paper is focused on the processing of aluminum alloy chips using powder metallurgy. Chips obtained from recycled AlSi5Cu2 alloy were ball milled with the addition of silicon carbide powder with an average size of 2μm. Mechanical alloying process was employed to obtain homogeneous composite powder. The effect of processing time (0 - 40h) on the homogeneity of the system was evaluated, as well as a detailed study of the microstructure of AlSi5Cu2 aluminum chips and SiC particles during MA was carried out. Addition of silicon carbide (10, 20wt%) to recycled aluminium chips and application of MA lead to fragmentation of the homogeneous composite powder down to particle size of about 3μm and spheroidization. The addition of hard SiC particles caused reinforcement and reduced the milling time. Higher content of silicon carbide and longer processing time allowed to obtain AlSi5Cu2/SiC powders with microhardness ~500HV0,025. The results of MA were investigated with SEM, EDS, LOM, XRD and showed that relatively homogeneous distribution of SiC reinforcements in the matrix as well as grain refinement of aluminum solid solution down to 50nm can be obtained after 40h of processing.
Dodatek SiC (10, 20%mas) do wiór stopu aluminium i zastosowanie mechanicznej syntezy pozwala na otrzymanie jednorodnego i drobnoziarnistego proszku o wielkości 3μm i kształcie zbliżonym do sferycznego. Dodatek twardych cząstek SiC powoduje umocnienie proszku oraz skrócenie czasu mielenia. Dodatek SiC i zastosowanie 40h mielenia pozwala otrzymać cząstki proszku o mikrotwardości około 500 HV0,025.

Opis:
Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of obesity, alcoholic beverage consumption, unhealthy alcohol use and sudden sleep onset at the wheel among Italian truck drivers. In addition to prevalence rates, this study also aimed at investigating potential predictors for sudden-onset sleepiness and obesity. Material and Methods A sample of truck drivers was extracted from the database of the High Risk Professional Driver Study. Data concerning demographics, anthropometry, medical information and working conditions were collected using anonymous questionnaires. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association of the reported body mass index (BMI), alcohol consumption and sudden sleep onset with working conditions and general lifestyle factors. Results Three hundred and thirty-five questionnaires were collected. According to their BMI, 45% of the participants were overweight and 21.4% of them were obese. Twenty-four point two percent declared they drank alcoholic beverages during working hours or work breaks and 21.3% of the drivers had an Alcohol Use Disorders Identyfication Test Consumption (AUDIT C) score ≥ 5 (the threshold value for unhealthy alcohol use). Forty-one point six percent of the interviewees experienced one episode of sudden sleep onset at the wheel per month (5.5% per week and 0.9% daily). Predictive factors for obesity were: length of service (odds ratio (OR) = 1.09, confidence interval (95% CI): 1.04–1.15, p < 0.001) and the AUDIT C total score (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.08–1.66, p = 0.008). Predictive factors for sudden-onset sleepiness at the wheel were: age > 55 years old (OR = 5.22, 95% CI: 1.29–21.1, p = 0.020), driving more than 50 000 km per year (OR = 2.89, 95% CI: 1.37–6.11, p = 0.006) and the Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire (CFQ) score > 11 (adjusted OR = 2.97, 95% CI: 1.22–7.21, p = 0.016). Conclusions This study strongly emphasizes the need for intervention in order to reduce and prevent important risk factors for the sake of road safety and truck drivers’ health.

Opis:
One of the main problems of knee replacement is the limit of knee flexion. This study focuses on the knee implant and the patellar component currently in use in total knee arthroplasty, analyzing the influence of patellar thickness on the degree of knee flexion following surgery. Methods: A kinematics study was performed to evaluate whether an optimal patellar thickness can be identified, which enables the maximum flexion angle to be achieved. Using TC images, a healthy model was built. On this basis, a model of a knee joint which had undergone total knee arthroplasty using a Legion PS prosthesis was constructed. Initially, the standard thickness of patellar implant (9 mm) was used to build the model; then several different patellar implant thicknesses (in the range of 5–15 mm) were analyzed. Results: The results show a non-linear trend: a button thickness of less than 9 mm does not change the flexion angle, whereas a button thickness of over 9 mm results in a loss of flexion. The flexion loss is significant in the first two additions of thicknesses but negligible in the last ones. Conclusions: In the case studied, flexion reduction is not linearly proportional to the patellar thickness. The outcome of total knee arthroplasty is considered to be satisfactory with the standard patellar button. The results of this study could be used to compare the kinematics with other total prosthesis and patellar implants, and should enable the optimization of the patellar residue bone thickness to obtain deep flexion.
