Opis:
Geochemical studies on the waters of four springs, including the Massabielle (MS) Spring, were carried out at Lourdes (France) following a long, rainless and warm period, with the aim of at least documenting the groundwater chemistry that was affected by the current meteoric input. The existence of anecdotal reports about anomalously elevated concentrations of trace constituents in the water of the MS Spring in the absence of any detailed studies inspired these first geochemical investigations of trace elements in the spring waters at Lourdes. The main common features of waters from the four springs studied in Lourdes are low total dissolved solids (255–318 mg/L), a slightly alkaline pH (7.50–7.68), oxidizing conditions (EH = 458–472 mV), similar temperatures (11.3–13.1 °C), and their Ca-HCO3 hydrochemical type, all of which are typical characteristics for an active zone within a hydrogeological system that is developed in carbonate-dominated bedrock. The spring waters, which represent an active turnover zone in the hydrogeological system, are only in partial chemical equilibrium with the minerals of the aquifer rocks. The enrichment of the MS Spring water with numerous elements (Li, Na, Cs, Ba, S, F, Br, REE, B, Sb and Bi), when compared with other springs studied and with the bedrock geochemistry, probably is caused by contributions from fluids (originating from the Pyrenees basement and/or from Triassic saliferous deposits) in the formation of the hydrogeochemical content of the zone under investigation. The germanium concentration in all of the waters studied was significantly lower than the concentrations typically found in fresh groundwater in the active zone; accordingly, the hypothesis concerning an anomalously high concentration of this element in the MS Spring water was invalidated. The preliminary geochemical research presented is part of an interdisciplinary geochemical-biological-tensiometric study of the spring waters at Lourdes.

Opis:
The effect of ultrasonic treatment on two different waste activated sludges (WASI and WAS2) was compared by batch tests. WASI was taken from an industrial WWTP that treats pulp and paper wastewater, WAS2 was obtained from a traditional municipal WWTP. Physical and chemical characterization of sludges and supernatants was performed at various specific energy inputs. Upon increasing specific energy input, sludge structure changed, particle size decreased and organic and nitrogen release increased. A different release of organic matter and nitrogen compound related to the sludge origin was observed. The study is a preliminary assay of the potential of sonication treatment to enhance biogas production in anaerobic digestion.

Opis:
Nowadays, wayside measurement systems of wheel-rail contact forces have acquired great relevance for the monitoring of rolling stock, especially for freight trains. Thanks to these solutions, infrastructure managers can check and monitor the status of rolling stock and, when necessary, impose corrective actions for the railway companies. On the other hand, the evaluation of contact forces is part of the rolling stock authorisation process [1] and a mainstone for the study of the running stability. The data provided by these measurements could give useful information to correlate the wear of the track with the frequency of applied loads, helping in the development of a better maintenance strategy of railway networks [2]. In this paper, the monitoring of vertical forces is based on the SMCV (Vertical Loads Monitoring System) method, where shear strains of the rail web are measured with a simple combination of four electrical strain gauges, placed on both sides of the rail web along each span. The research has identified self-diagnosis methods for the SMCV system to ensure the reliability and the quality of the measurements and to extend the knowledge of the system. The recorded signals have been processed and converted into easily interpretable physical quantities by means of MATLAB® algorithm.

Opis:
This article presents the new Italian database of physical agents, which is available at http://www.portaleagentifisici.it. It supports in risk assessment employers who have to comply with Italy’s Legislative Decree 81/2008 (transposing into law European Union Directives 2003/10/EC, 2002/44/EC, 2004/40/EC and 2006/25/EC). The database currently contains measurements and declared European Community (EC) values from over 2540 machines; in particular, the database hosts data on mechanical vibration from over 1430 hand-held power tools (e.g., pneumatic and electric hammers, chainsaws, grinders, drills, sanders and saws) and from over 1020 whole-body machines (e.g., buses, fork lifts and wheel tractors). The database is continuously updated as soon as new experimental and declared data are acquired.
