Opis:
In Paul Thagard’s article “Why Astrology Is a Pseudoscience”, we might find some demarcation criteria which are best used in determining whether certain fields with a lot of practitioners can be claimed to be pseudoscientific. Theory T for the pseudoscience club is if T has long been less progressive than its competitors and faces many more unsolved problems; and, adherents to T do not try to develop the theory to solve puzzles, do not attempt to evaluate T with respect to its alternatives, and are highly reserved and selective in seeking confirmation and falsification. Ten years later Thagard gave us new proposals. If T is a pseudoscience, then it is usually the case that (1) T is neither simple nor unified; the explanations, resources, (2) and predictions of T tend to be ad hoc, spurious, or ill-fitted to the rest of T; or, (3) adherents to T do not try to develop the theory to solve puzzles, do not attempt to evaluate T with respect to competitors, and (4) are highly reserved and selective in seeking confirmation and falsification. In this article, Paul Thagard’s criteria of demarcation are examined and evaluated from the point of view of the history of astrology.

The article presents the philosophical views of Jędrzej Śniadecki (1768–1838) – one of the greatest Polish chemists and biologists of the first half of the 19th century. In the literature on the subject, there are significant differences in the assessment of these views, especially in regard to the question whether Jędrzej Śniadecki was a materialist. Answering it, not only am I presenting the views of other authors in this matter, but I am also trying to explain the sources of existing discrepancies. Next, I am specifying the concept of materialism, claiming that the argument about the materialist character of Jędrzej Śniadecki’s views is well-justified. I am also trying to point out the sources of these views. At last, I am arguing that Jędrzej Śniadecki used to build his materialistic outlook on philosophical works of Joseph Priestley (1733–1804).

In this article, I argue that “Polemical Remarks about the Concept of the Chthonic Universe” are not quite reliable. First of all I’m not entirely convinced that the title of my book must be changed. My first objective in this paper is to prove that the adjective chthonic in the title of the book Chthonic Universe is more appropriate than the adjective telluric, which is proposed by my adversary. Next, what it demonstrated is that subsequent objections to the concept of the chthonic universe are invalid. In particular, so-called “methodological objection” is invalid because the concept of the chthonic universe is first and foremost a philosophical view of the universe, which emerges from the development of astrophysics and then is not an obstacle to the progress of this science. Without going into the details of my response to Dziadkowiec’s article, it should be pointed out that most of the objections to the concept of the chthonic universe in it are mere misunderstandings.
W artykule wykazuje się, że "Uwagi polemiczne do koncepcji kosmosu chtonicznego" autorstwa Jakuba Dziadkowca nie są całkiem wiarygodne. Przede wszystkim nie zostało przekonująco wykazane, że tytuł mojej książki powinien być zmieniony. Pierwszym celem tego artykułu jest zatem pokazanie, że użycie przymiotnika chtoniczny w tytule książki Kosmos chtoniczny było bardziej zasadne niż użycie proponowanego przez polemistę przymiotnika telluryczny. Następnie pokazuje się, że kolejne zarzuty stawiane koncepcji kosmosu chtonicznego nie są zasadne. W szczególności nie jest zasadny tzw. „zarzut metodologiczny”, ponieważ koncepcja kosmosu chtonicznego jest przede wszystkim filozoficzną interpretacją rozwoju astrofizyki i nie może być przeszkodą w postępach tej nauki. Nie wchodząc zbytnio w szczegóły, należy tylko odnotować, że większość zarzutów do koncepcji kosmosu chtonicznego to zwykłe nieporozumienia.

Marian Smoluchowski was a prominent Polish physicist whose greatest achievement was the development – independently of Albert Einstein – of the mathematical theory of Brownian motion. In his theoretical view of the problem of Brownian motion Smoluchowski employed the concept of causal relevance, which was never analysed in numerous publications devoted to his scientific achievement. In this article I am attempting to demonstrate that the concept of causal relevance which Smoluchowski employed in his works devoted to the issue of Brownian motion may be interpreted as analogous to the concept of causal relevance articulated by Max Kistler. I present a number of arguments which demonstrate that just such a concept of causal relevance was established by Smoluchowski. Since the explanation of the phenomenon of Brownian motion presented by Smoluchowski has been universally accepted, so in the same way the physicalistic concept of causal relevance has been widely propagated. In this I detect Smoluchowski’s contribution to the philosophy of causality.

Abstrakt: W artykule podejmuję problem genezy opozycji między monizmem a dualizmem. Skupiam się na ukazaniu kontekstu historycznego, w którym opozycja ta się pojawiła. Przede wszystkim analizuję terminologię związaną z tą opozycją. Pokazuję, że w związku z uniezależnieniem się filozofii od teologii pewne terminy, które były wykorzystywane do prezentacji doktryn teologicznych, zostały zaadaptowane do badań filozoficznych. Przedstawiam transfer terminologii z teologii do filozofii i interpretuję dualizm jako pojęcie liminalne.
In the article I address the problem of the genesis of the monism-dualism opposition. I focus on showing the historical context in which this opposition appeared. First of all, I analyze the terminology related to this opposition. I show that due to the emancipation of philosophy from theology, certain terms that were used to present theological doctrines were adopted for the purposes of philosophical research. I present the transfer of this terminology from theology to philosophy and interpret dualism as a liminal concept.

W artykule zostały zaprezentowane poglądy filozoficzne Feliksa Młynarskiego na genezę materii i mechanizmy ewolucji zawarte w nieopublikowanej rozprawie zatytułowanej Filozofia ewolucji kosmicznej. Argumentuję, że poglądy te — wbrew deklaracji autora — nie są rodzajem dualizmu ontologicznego, ale jedną z wersji panpsychizmu znanej jako pan(proto)psychizm kosmiczny, który jest formą monizmu.
The article presents the philosophical views of Feliks Młynarski on the genesis of matter and mechanisms of evolution included in the unpublished dissertation entitled Philosophy of Cosmic Evolution. I argue that these views — contrary to the author’s declaration — are not a kind of ontological dualism, but one of the versions of panpsychism known as pan(proto)cosmic psychism, which is a form of monism.

Our aim in this article is to trace the evolution of the concepts of physical space in Western thought from the Greeks to the Newtonian philosophy of nature. Especially the article presents studies of ancient Greek theories of physical space and place, in particular those of the classical and Hellenistic period. These theories are explained primarily with reference to the general philosophical or methodological framework within which they took shape. Special attention is paid to the interrelations between various concepts of space and with Greek spatial terminology. The arguments of this paper can be summarized as follows: first, the concept of space itself has taken the central position in philosophy of nature; second, the debate about the nature of space has developed several different theories; third, the concept of space has several issues to overcome.

The paper sought to present one trend of the debate carried on within the confines of 20th-century history of science, i.e. the genesis of science. Among various trends of this debate we shall distinguish one that concerns the evaluation of the significance of the main traditions in Greek philosophy (Ionian, Pythagorean-Platonic) in the process of the constitution of science. The paper shows some solutions to this question that appear in the main trends of 20th--century history of science (externalism, internalism).

In this paper R. DiSalle’s conception of the ontological status of spacetime are discussed. The first part of the article is devoted to the presentation of his objections to the standard substantial-relational debate concerning spacetime ontology, especially to the usual interpretations of Newton’ and Leibniz’s views on the nature of space and the relativity of motion. In the second is shown spacetime theory as kind of physical geometry. This peculiar characteristic of spacetime theory was one of the insights of the empiricist tradition in the philosophy of geometry. R. DiSalle’s new approach for ontological status of spacetime provides, as he believes, a much clearer and more defensible account of what is entailed by realism concerning spacetime, but some objections to this view are presented.

The second book of Aristotle's On the heavens, dealing with the form of the Cosmos, the motions and the nature of stars, the position and form of the earth, enables us to reconstruct the ideas concerning the origin and evolution of earlier cosmological models. In the paper some aspects of the two-spherical Model of the Universe, which are contained in his cosmology are discussed. First, the overall character of the geocentric system and, especially, the doctrine of the spherical shape of the earth is examined. Next, the two-sphere model, which is considered the greatest achievement of Aristotle in cosmology, is critically dealt with. In discussing these questions, ajuxtapositional strategy is followed. In consists in commenting critically the Aristotle's interpretation of the above model, along with showing alternative interpretations which subsequent historical scholarship has brought to light.
