Opis:: We review the possible mechanisms leading up to the phenomenon of a pseudogap which characterizes the normal-state properties of high-T$\text{}_{c}$ superconductors. We suggest that this pseudogap is not due to superconducting phase fluctuations and hence is not related to a crossover between a BCS state of Cooper pairs and a Bose-Einstein condensation of local pairs. We rather argue that it is due to uncorrelated pairing which is already manifest in the local electronic structure and accessible by photoemission and tunneling experiments.

Opis:: We study the superconducting instabilities generated by the inclusion in the Anderson lattice model of a density-density attractive potential between correlated electrons on nearest-neighbouring sites. Using a description of the normal phase based on a perturbative expansion around the atomic limit, we treat the attractive potential in the broken-symmetry Hartree-Fock scheme and analyze which of the possible symmetries of the superconducting order parameter leads to the highest possible transition temperature in the case of a two-dimensional square lattice. For values of the on-site f-repulsion large compared to the hopping amplitude, a suppression of any possible superconducting phase occurs, regardless of the symmetry of the order parameter.

Opis:: We analyze the possible occurrence of ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model, by means of an exact diagonalization study performed on 3- to 8-site chains with periodic boundary conditions. In the case of one hole in the half-filled configuration, we find that the Nagaoka state is reached only in the 3- and in the 4-site case. Ground states characterized by unsaturated ferromagnetism are found when the case of more than one hole is considered.

Opis:: We analyze the effects of a large spin-orbit coupling on the magnetic state of a d¹ transition-metal ion located in a tetrahedral environment. While in the ideal tetrahedral symmetry the spin-orbit coupling acts only as a perturbation on the atomic energy levels set by the crystal-field splitting, we demonstrate that its effects are strongly enhanced in the case of distorted geometries. In particular, we consider the specific case in which the tetrahedron is compressed along the z direction, and show that, by increasing the degree of flattening, a large spin-orbit interaction (i) can induce a substantial anisotropic, unquenched orbital momentum and (ii) can affect the hierarchy of the lowest energy levels that are involved in the magnetic exchange.

Opis:: Skeletal remains, some loose on the surface and others still embedded, have been recovered from the uppermost part of an outcrop of the Permian Cala del Vino Formation located near Torre del Porticciolo (Alghero, Nurra, NW Sardinia). Taphonomic analysis suggests that all the elements pertain to a single individual; ongoing studies indicate the fossil represents a large caseid close (or referable) to Cotylorhynchus; otherwise restricted to a narrow geographic and stratigraphic zone of the central USA. The new finding, the first of a caseid in Italy and one of few in Europe, enlarges the known distribution of the family and provides a significant and key chronostratigraphic constraint for the continental succession of this area and, in turn, helps establish a stratigraphic framework for the Permian units cropping out in Italy and southern France.

Opis:: Eleven new tracks from the Upper Jurassic of Portugal are described and attributed to the stegosaurian ichnogenus Deltapodus. One track exhibits exceptionally well−preserved impressions of skin on the plantar surface, showing the stegosaur foot to be covered by closely spaced skin tubercles of ca. 6 mm in size. The Deltapodus specimens from the Aalenian of England represent the oldest occurrence of stegosaurs and imply an earlier cladogenesis than is recognized in the body fossil record.

Opis:: Inherent heterogeneity of the networks increases risk factor and new security threats emerge due to the variety of network types and their vulnerabilities. This paper presents an example of applied security framework - the INTERSECTION. By referring to the ISO/IEC security standards and to the FP7 INTERSECTION project results, authors underline that in the processes of managing and planning security, investigating technology and business governance should be at least as important as formalizing the need for decisions on security cooperation between operators. INTERSECTION provides security mechanisms and introduces capability possible only with a management solution that is at a higher level than that of any of the connected systems alone.

Opis:: Objective: Farming is associated with exposure to a wide variety of risk factors including organic dusts, endotoxins, allergens and other chemicals. The ability of some of these agents to interact with the immune system is demonstrated in the presented study which was undertaken to evaluate the relationship between pig and cow breeding, and the immune system early changes. Particular attention is paid to selected serum cytokines. Methods: Sixty four animal breeders (36 cattle and 28 pig breeders) were selected as the exposed group, and 32 rural workers not engaged in animal breeding were utilised as the controls. Personal data were collected through a questionnaire, and selected serum parameters measured, including cytokines IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IFNγ and TNFα, immunoglobulins and proteins, and total and differential white blood cell counts. Results: The study stresses the significant increase of TNF-α, IL-8, and IL-10 in animal breeders, with the highest values in pig breeders, and a slight but statistically significant increase in albumin and total serum proteins. Conclusions: The findings of the presented study suggest a condition of immune system activation in animal breeders, with the highest levels observed in pig breeders. These changes may be attributable to exposure to organic dusts, endotoxins, or to the different biological agents present in the rural environment. The prognostic significance of these findings, however, remains unclear, but the observed changes might be indicative of a risk of developing respiratory toxic and allergic diseases, which need to be further investigated.
