Opis:
Natural environment of high mountains is undergoing rapid changes. One of its elements is the relief. What needs to be particularly emphasized here is its contemporary morphogenesis. The aim of the study is an attempt to define the predisposition of natural environment of the chosen region (NW) of the Pamirs towards the development of contemporary morphogenetic processes. In order to carry it out, quality classes method was implemented. Quality classes method was carried out on two kinds of basic fields of assessment: geometric and natural (geomorphologic). It was preceded by a selection of 14 characteristics of the study area, elements or components of the natural environment, which were analysed from the perspective of their influence on initiating, change of intensity or vanishing of the contemporary land formation processes. Maps of predisposition of natural environment of north-western part of the Pamirs towards the development of modern morphogenetic processes for the two kinds of fields constitute the final result of the study. Gained results enable to state that the significant part of the study area is characterized by big predispositions towards the development of contemporary morphogenetic processes. However, on the basis of research on location it was find out that in a few places there is a more intensive forming of the surface than it results from the gained results. Areas of average and small predispositions almost precisely coincide with the range of big Pamirs glaciers. Moreover, it can be said that an extremely important issue for the high mountain region characterized by a big spatial changeability of all analyzed elements of natural environment is the size of the basic field of assessment.

Opis:
Mountain slopes covered with compact stands get significantly transformed as a result of extreme processes of catastrophic type. One of the factors that cause rapid changes in the environment of such areas, including relief, are strong winds. A direct resuit of thelr action are fallen trees. They form the nucleus of development of microrelief which consists of characteristic groups of cavities and mounds. Such forms have been the subject of research within the windthrow area in the Slovak High Tatras. Within the limits of 10 polygons selected for detailed studies (total area of over 5,500 m²) all the fallen trees were measured (176 in total). It was calculated, among others, that one tree fallen during the storm in the Slovak High Tatras changed the relief of an area of approximately 3.64 m². On the average, there are 3.2 fallen trees per 100 m². Cavities and rootstocks represent 11.3% of the total area of the surveyed polygons. The estimated total surface area of the analysed forms created in just three hours on 19 Nov. 2004 is therefore about 1,400 ha (14 km²). Pit-and-mound microrelief characteristic of the studied slopes is modelled by morphogenetic processes such as falling off, wash away and deflation and get consolidated by gradually encroaching vegetation, leading to its masking. The size of the rapidly transformed land ( cavities and rootstocks, the n mounds) will increase at most by a few percent, mainly as a result of the evolution of mounds. These forms will account for 15-20% of the entire windthrow area of the Slovak High Tatras, which is typical for spruce forests transformed as a result of strong winds.

Opis:
The paper deals with one of more important elements of natural environment of high mountains - relief and its contemporary changes caused by morphogenetic processes. The area of research is situated in north-western part of the Pamirs. The background of the research is the description of selected elements of the natural environment which played an important role in its morphogenesis. Complex geology, high tectonic and seismic activity, numerous glaciers, extreme climatic conditions, scarce vegetation or lack of it - all these are selected features of natural environment influencing the character of the relief in the researched area. The contemporary shape of land surface of north-western Pamirs is the effect of the Pleistocene and Holocene transformation of Tertiary, or partially older, relief. Evolution of land surface in the mentioned periods took place as a result of numerous morphogenetic processes: gravitational, glacial, fluvial, aeolian, nival, cryogenic and pluvial. In the researched area, processes which lead to a "sharpening" of forms and an increase of relative height are stili taking place.

Opis:
Natural environment of the Slovak High Tatra Mountains, including landforms, underwent a rapid change. On November 19, 2004, following a disastrous bora, a blowdown area was formed covering 12,600 hectares, and bearing nearly 3 million cubic metres of fallen wood. Necessary forest clearing works related to damage mitigation began in spring 2005. These consisted in cutting and taking down the wood using heavy machinery and vehicles. Intensive after-disaster works led, however, to changes in the depth and density of cart roads. The aim of this paper is to estimate the direction and rate of changes within road dissections after intensive forest works. To achieve this task, the results of measurements of the depth of road incision along selected profiles situated at places differing by inclination and the type of exploitation were used. The collected data point to dominant, although minor role of accumulation processes over erosive ones, the latter being important during the period of relatively not intensive road exploitation. The most important factor contributing to such a denudation balance of gently inclined (up to 20 centigrade) roads appears to be human impact, dominating over properties of natural environment. Hence, termination of intensive road exploitation and introduction of anti-erosive measures, such as steps on steeper (more than 15 centigrade) road segments, are most effective when preventing erosion processes within the latter in the blowdown area in the Slovak High Tatra Mountains.

Opis:
The major relief features of the Pińczów region (Ponidzie Pińczowskie) are the following: 1. Polygenetic nature of landforms, which are records of subsequent stages of the region’s geological development (both the youngest and the oldest landforms owe their contemporary shape not to one, but to many links in the evolution of the analysed relief). 2. Great importance of pre-Quaternary forms excavated from under younger deposits. ln this respect, Tertiary relief is the most significant. 3. Manifest dependence of morphology on tectonics and lithological differentiation of deposits (tectonics-based direction of relief, dependence of slope shapes from the substratum structure, occurrence of structural escarpments). 4. Presence and common occurrence of unique gypsum karst forms and their great diversity. 5. lnsignificance of glacial forms, whose remains can be found only locally, on hilltops of older elevations. 6. Considerable range of fluvoglacial cover. 7. Major significance of Holocene processes for the contemporary relief. 8. Important contemporary role of man in relief-forming processes, multitude and diversity of antropogenic forms. The graphic representation of relief (Fig. 2) manifests yet another important feature of the relief in the Pińczów region; it distinctly shows its division into horizons, relating to pre-Quaternary forms. Starting from the areas situated the highest, we can distinguish: • hilltop surface of the Pińczów Hummock at a level of approximately 260 metres a.s.l., with denudation mountains, partly covered with fluvioglacial sands, occasionally forming sand dunes. Culminations reach 270-290 metres above sea level. • Another level (230-250 metres a.s.l.) cuts through gypsum, limestone and marl of the Solec and Połaniec Basins. It is largely covered with denudated glacial forms and fluvioglacial sands. Above this level, gypsum and glacial relic mountains protrude. • In the western part of the Nida valley, the loess-covered spreads of the Wodzisław Hummock hilltop, occurring at the altitude of 280-330 metres, and lowering to approximately 250 metres on the slopes, correspond to the two surfaces described above. • At an altitude of approximately 230 metres starts the level of large, usually water-logged depressions, contemporarily used by rivers or intersected by a network of canals. Most probably, they are preQuaternary forms, possibly tectonic, transformed by glacial (and in some places karst) processes. • The remaining levels are distinctly related to the Nida valley and constitute its terraces -two Pleistocene and two Holocene, at altitudes ranging from 200 to 180 metres. The first three Ievels are autonomous in nature, with clearly marked slopes. The remaining levels are local erosion base levels and receive matter originating from the erosion of higher-situated areas.

Opis:
The paper reports on a study of the impact of morphology and lithology of small catchments on episodic river channel development in the southern High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. A detailed analysis focused on three catchments of small wadis featuring different relief and lithology along the upper, middle and lower course of the Dades River. The fieldwork combined with an analysis of topographic and geological maps and of satellite images concluded that the development of the river valley and channel structures was related to the main stages in the development of the landform in this part of the High Atlas. The channel dynamics were found to be typical of arid mountains, which was particularly apparent within a denudational-and-fluvial zone that reached up to 3,000 m a.s.l. The dominant morphodynamic system of this zone was pluvio-gravitational where episodic heavy rainfall events triggered fast displacement of stone mantle covers down the slopes and into the river channels. An analysis of the deposition zones in the lower channel reaches and on alluvial fans at the confluence of the side valleys and the main valley leads to the conclusion that the main factor, which determines the channel morphology is the impact of debris flows and heavily loaded streams and rivers. The deposited material is then transported outside the mountain zone and deposited within broad river channels. The development of the river channels in the three catchments depends on their order, morphometric property, slope lithology and the amount of material received from the slopes.
