    Titles, seals and coats of arms of Lithuanian dukes have not been hitherto the subject of interest of historians as this issue was mainly addressed marginally in the studies on the symbols of power of Grand Dukes of Lithuania, particularly Jagiellons. Owing to the considerable number and diversification of dukes living in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania prior to the Union of Lublin, the article focuses on the analysis of titles, seals and coats of arms used by the Gediminas family and their descendants. In the period under discussion the dukes played a major social and political role, particularly at the end of the 14th century and at the beginning of the 15th century since they ruled their own feudal duchies and cooperated (or competed) closely with the Grand Duke. Although in the 15th century they lost their political sovereignty and became part of the class of landowners, they continued to keep many privileges and still played a major role in political and social life, particularly in their provinces. Enjoying the authority and extensive influence, the dukes generated the set of symbols of power and importance, which is worth examining. The analysis of the most representative monuments shows that titles, seals and coats of arms constituted a kind of indicator reflecting the social status and the position of the Gediminas family in the country: different symbols defined the rank of the Gediminas family as feudal dukes, and different symbols referred to their position as wealthy landowners. Both in the first and second situation, the dukes were capable of using the symbols in such a way so as to create their propaganda image and express far-reaching political aspirations. The symbolism of grand dukes, in particular one of the Jagiellons, was available to the dukes and they willingly used it. The fact of being inspired by the monarch’s symbols seems to differentiate Lithuanian dukes from other branches of the ruling European dynasties. It may mean that dukes considered the fact of being related to grand dukes rather than their wealth to be the source of their power and importance.

    Genealogy of the Sanguszko Family by Prince Symeon Samuel SanguszkoA genealogy of the Sanguszko Family produced by Symeon Samuel Sanguszko (died 1638) is a short historical text presenting the history of the Sanguszkos in genealogical order: starting with the progenitor, it contains biographic notes of successive members of the family according to family branches. The genealogy made by a member of the family is a record of knowledge of a magnate about his own family, making it a valuable source for research into collective memory and historical culture of magnates of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth of those times. The work is known in three versions: the original and two its eighteenth-century copies. The analysis contains the filiation of known and established manuscript texts, time of their creation, their purpose, and their later archival and library history. Next, the sources of information of the author are established and based on this the historian’s craft of the author and the memory culture of his family are discussed. The genealogy was based on historical writings, mainly Maciej Stryjkowski’s chronicle, which was used for the reconstruction of the oldest history of the family, and the collective memory of the family, i.e. the knowledge passed down from generation to generation within the family, used to reconstruct the later history. A thorough analysis of the genealogy information revealed that some parts of the work were invented by the author to fill in the gaps between the part reconstructed on the basis of chronicles and that on the basis of family memory (“floating gap”). And finally, the importance of the genealogy for the Sanguszko Family’s identity and old-Polish knowledge of genealogy is presented. It turned out that the genealogy had a great impact both on the Sanguszko’s identity and the old-Polish genealogical studies, as it gave rise and strengthened the – untrue – conviction among both the family members and old-Polish historians that the Sanguszkos descended from Liubartas son of Gediminas. The annex contains a critical edition of the genealogy text, reconstructed on the basis of three old-Polish manuscripts and a nineteenth-century transcription of the original manuscript.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest kwestii pochodzenia książąt Czartoryskich. Problem ten jest od dawna przedmiotem dyskusji w historiografii, mimo to wciąż nie może zostać uznany za rozstrzygnięty. Wobec ostatnich prac negujących Olgierdowe korzenie Czartoryskich, Autor proponuje nowe spojrzenie na rodowód rodziny, próbując rozświetlić problem jej pochodzenia na podstawie krytycznego rozbioru przekonań funkcjonujących w pamięci i tradycji familii w epoce staropolskiej. Przeprowadzona w tekście analiza, rozpatrująca w porządku retrogresywnym tradycję rodzinną Czartoryskich XVII i XVIII w., pamięć zbiorową familii w XVI w. i wreszcie przekaz kluczowego dla badanej kwestii dokumentu Władysława III Jagiellończyka z 1442 r. dostarczają argumentów potwierdzających Olgierdowy rodowód książąt.
    The article deals with the question of the origin of the Princes Czartoryski. This problem has long been discussed in historiography, yet it still cannot be regarded as resolved. In response to the recent studies denying the Algirdas (Olgierd) roots of the Czartoryskis, the author proposes a new look at the family lineage, attempting to illuminate the problem of the Czartoryskis’ origin based on a critical examination of beliefs functioning in the memory and tradition of the family in the Old-Polish period. The analysis, scrutinising in retrogressive order the Czartoryski family tradition of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the collective memory of the family in the sixteenth century, and finally, the message of a 1442 document by King Władysław III Jagiellon, which is critical to the issue under examination, provides arguments supporting the Algirdas lineage of the princes.
