Opis:
With incident fluences of ≈ $10^{12}$ atoms/$cm^2$ aluminium samples have been plasma immersion ion implanted with either pure nitrogen or argon/nitrogen mixtures at temperatures around 450°C. X-ray diffraction studies have validated the formation of the cubic phase of AlN, in samples treated with both the gas mixtures and pure nitrogen. Likewise, the presence of the hexagonal phase of AlN has been detected when either pure nitrogen or a 70%N/30%Ar mixture have been used. The signature peak of AlN has also been confirmed by the Raman spectroscopy. The maximal microhardness values were found in samples treated with the mixture. The maximal roughness was achieved with the equal part mixture in all cases, although increasing with the implantation pulse width up to a 300 nm peak at 150 μs. The latter critical value remains invariant under the pure nitrogen plasma treatment, provided that implantation periods in the order of 4.5 h are carried out.

Opis:
The present work proposes several pre-injection patterns to reduce nitrogen oxides in the Wartsila 6L 46 marine engine. A numerical model was carried out to characterise the emissions and consumption of the engine. Several pre-injection quantities, durations, and starting instants were analysed. It was found that oxides of nitrogen can be noticeably reduced but at the expense of increasing consumption as well as other emissions such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. According to this, a multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model was established to select the most appropriate parameters. Besides, an artificial neural network (ANN) was developed to complement the results and analyse a huge quantity of alternatives. This hybrid MCDM-ANN methodology proposed in the present work constitutes a useful tool to design new marine engines.

Several species of Solanum produce secondary metabolites with antimicrobial activity. In the present study, the inhibitory activity of Solanum chrysotrichum, S. erianthum, S. torvum and S. rostratum against phytopathogenic Curvularia lunata was determined. Methanol extracts from roots, stems, leaves and fruits were evaluated by the method of mycelial inhibition on agar and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined on a liquid medium. To increase the antimicrobial activity, the combined activity of the most active extracts for each phytopathogen was also determined (a combination of intra and interspecies extracts). The results showed that 12 of the 16 methanolic extracts of Solanum species had antifungal effects against C. lunata. The extracts of S. rostratum and S. erianthum developed the highest activity (~80% inhibition and 28.4 MIC μg . ml–1), even, equal to or greater than, the reference fungicide. The mixture of the active extracts of S. chrysotrichum and S. torvum increased their activity. Various extracts affected the macro and microscopic morphology and most of them reduced the number of conidia of the fungus. This resulted in the capacity to control the vegetative growth and reproduction of C. lunata, the causal fungus of corn leaf spot disease.

This study describes the phytoplankton community in sheltered euhaline waters of the Basque coast (southeastern Bay of Biscay). Phytoplankton composition, cell size, abundance, biomass and the presence of potentially toxic taxa, together with chlorophyll a, nutrients and hydrographic and optical conditions were measured, from August 2016 to August 2017, in the Mutriku port, with the main aim of assessing the suitability of the phytoplankton community as a food resource for bivalves. The water column in Mutriku showed the typical environmental conditions of Basque marine waters, with no significant nutrient enrichment caused by anthropogenic pressures. Haptophytes represented the greatest contribution to cell abundance (31—47%), and diatoms were the dominant group in terms of biomass (52—79%), which could favour mussel growth due to their high fatty acid content. In addition, the size structure of the phytoplankton community was suitable for mussel ingestion, since the predominant cell size was 2—20 μm. Regarding toxic phytoplankton, the genera that pose a risk for human health and those that affect negatively mussel physiology and survival were considered. Altogether, ten toxic phytoplankton taxa were identified, contributing in less than 5% to the total cell abundance of Mutriku. However, median chlorophyll a concentration was low (0.5 μg L−1), reflecting the oligotrophic conditions of the area. Therefore, even if the composition of the phytoplankton community could be favourable for bivalve aquaculture, biomass values are low compared to other zones of bivalve production.

Given a connected graph G, a vertex w ∈ V (G) strongly resolves two vertices u, v ∈ V (G) if there exists some shortest u − w path containing v or some shortest v − w path containing u. A set S of vertices is a strong metric generator for G if every pair of vertices of G is strongly resolved by some vertex of S. The smallest cardinality of a strong metric generator for G is called the strong metric dimension of G. In this paper we obtain several relationships between the strong metric dimension of the lexicographic product of graphs and the strong metric dimension of its factor graphs.

Opis:
Let G be a connected graph. Given an ordered set W = {w1, . . ., wk} ⊆ V (G) and a vertex u ∈ V (G), the representation of u with respect to W is the ordered k-tuple (d(u, w1), d(u, w2), . . ., d(u, wk)), where d(u, wi) denotes the distance between u and wi. The set W is a metric generator for G if every two different vertices of G have distinct representations. A minimum cardinality metric generator is called a metric basis of G and its cardinality is called the metric dimension of G. It is well known that the problem of finding the metric dimension of a graph is NP-hard. In this paper we obtain closed formulae for the metric dimension of graphs with cut vertices. The main results are applied to specific constructions including rooted product graphs, corona product graphs, block graphs and chains of graphs.

A hydraulic retention time (retention) also known as HRT is one of the most important parameter in biogas plant exploitation. In practice, there are many substrates with different HRT used in agricultural biogas plant which makes difficulties in fermentation process optimization. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the efficiency of biomethane production and to determine the dynamics of the fermentation process expressed by reaching 60, 80, 90 and 100% of HRT. The results showed very big differences in efficiency of methane production as well as HRT duration between analyzed substrates. The total fermentation period (100% of HRT) for investigated substrates amounted average 31,5 day (range: 21-41 days). However production of last 10% of methane average out 28%. It proves very low dynamics of fermentation process in the last phase.

Opis:
This study aimed to investigate controlled fermentation of cocoa beans with selected yeasts as starter cultures via integrating microbiological, biochemical, and chromatographic analyses. The steps involved in the yeast starter culture test were of the following order: 1) counting, isolation, purification, and biochemical identification of yeasts, 2) selection of ethanol-producing yeasts, 3) selection of thermotolerant yeasts, and 4) evaluation of physicochemical parameters of the selected yeasts in controlled fermentation of cocoa (F1 - Saccharomyces ssp. and Hanseniaspora ssp. and F2 - spontaneous fermentation - control). A total of 32 yeasts were isolated from three sampling points (M1, M2, and M3), which comprised 50% Candida ssp., 9.4% Rhodotorula ssp., 18.8% Saccharomyces ssp., and 18.8% Hanseniaspora ssp. The yeasts identified as Saccharomyces ssp. (n = 6) were subjected to the ethanol production test. Saccharomyces spp. CLV09 showed the highest concentration of ethanol in the simulated cocoa medium (3.5% v/v). Hanseniaspora spp. CVL20 and CVL19 strains showed the highest thermotolerance at 42°C after 72 h of growth. The starter cultures with Saccharomyces ssp. and Hanseniaspora ssp. showed a similar growth rate of the mesophilic aerobic population in both F1 and F2. Fermentation of the starter culture showed a higher production of organic acids than spontaneous fermentation (F2). Thus, Saccharomyces ssp. and Hanseniaspora ssp. can be used as a starter culture in cocoa fermentation.

Opis:
In order to survive periods of adverse cold climatic conditions, plant requirements are satisfi ed by means of physiological adaptations to prevent cells from freezing. Thus, the growth of woody plants in temperate regions slows down and they enter into a physiological state called dormancy. In order to identify the chilling and heat requirements to overcome the dormancy period of Cupressaceae pollen type in the south of Europe, we have carried out our study with aerobiological data from a 10-year (1996- 2005) period in Ponferrada, León (Spain). For the chilling requirements the best result was with a threshold temperature of 7.1ºC and an average of 927 CH. Calculation of heat requirements was carried out with maximum temperature, with 490 growth degree days (GDD) needed, with a threshold temperature of 0ºC. We have used the 2002-2003, 2003- 2004 and 2004-2005 periods in order to determine the real validity of the model. We have not used these years in developing the models. The dates predicted differ in only a few days from those observed: in 2002-2003 there was a difference of 11 days, in 2003-2004 predicted and observed dates were the same, but in 2004-2005 the difference obtained was of 43 days.

Opis:
In this paper the effect of discontinuity size on energy absorption performance of steel square profiles is reported. The analysis consists of finite element simulations and experimental results of the compression strength of steel profiles with discontinuities. The discontinuities were placed at the mid span of the profiles in two walls opposite to each other. Square, rectangular and diamond initiators were evaluated at different scales. The numerical results determined the size intervals that present a good energy absorption performance in each case. Energy absorption capabilities were increased up to 12.54% with respect to a structure without discontinuities. Additionally, the peak load value (Pmax) was decreased 25.97% with the implementation of a diamond initiator. For structures with discontinuities with major axis close to the profile width, a buckling effect was observed. Finally, it was observed that the size of the initiators contributes to reduce the peak load (Pmax) value.

An adaptive strategy for nonlinear finite-element analysis, based on the combination of error estimation and h-remeshing, is presented. Its two main ingredients are a residual-type error estimator and an unstructured quadrilateral mesh generator. The error estimator is based on simple local computations over the elements and the so-called patches. In contrast to other residual estimators, no flux splitting is required. The adaptive strategy is illustrated by means of a complex nonlinear problem: the failure analysis of a single-edge notched beam. The quasi-brittle response of concrete is modelled by means of a nonlocal damage model.
