Opis:
Bivalves, oysters, mussels, and clams are important constituents of riverine and estuarine ecosystems. Their shells and soft tissues provide information on the environments in which they live. Since they are filter feeders, they also are factors in improving water quality through removal of particulate matter from the water column. Finally, they are a valuable food source that has substantial economic value. Hence, characterization of shells and soft tissues is useful for improved understanding of these factors. Here, we used X-ray microprobes and computed microtomography facilities at the Brookhaven National Synchrotron Light Source to investigate elemental distributions in bivalves taken from locations around New York, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, LA. The results form the initial basis for compilation of a database of relevant parameters that can serve for tracking environmental changes and for assessing toxicity of particular metals. The work was enabled by active collaboration with students from the several regions, community groups, and research scientists. The collaboration was facilitated through use of web conferencing between Brookhaven National Laboratory and the varied locations.

Opis:
Applications and Projects of the Centre of Excellence in TeleGeomatics, University of Trieste, are herein reported, in particular as far as regards the Interreg SISA (Survey and Information System of Adriatic Roads) Project. The new instruments and devices of MMS used for the surveys are described together with the obtained results and accuracies. Moreover the results of laser scanner surveys from the Mobile Mapping Systems are presented and compared to another more accurate system. Future developments and application are presented linking together different techniques and methodologies for real time surveys, in particular with the use of WADGPS techniques also through InterNet (SISNeT ESA Project), with a software developed at the Laboratory oC Topogra.phy and GIS, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Opis:
Image segmentation is a typical operation in many image analysis and computer vision applications. However, hyperspectral image segmentation is a field which have not been fully investigated. In this study an analogue-digital image segmentation technique is presented. The system uses an acousto-optic tuneable filter, and a CCD camera to capture hyperspectral images that are stored in a digital grey scale format. The dataset was built considering several objects with remarkable differences in the reflectance and brightness components. In addition, the work presents a semi-supervised segmentation technique to deal with the complex problem of hyperspectral image segmentation, with its corresponding quantitative and qualitative evaluation. Particularly, the developed acousto-optic system is capable to acquire 120 frames through the whole visible light spectrum. Moreover, the analysis of the spectral images of a given object enables its segmentation using a simple subtraction operation. Experimental results showed that it is possible to segment any region of interest with a good performance rate by using the proposed analogue-digital segmentation technique.
