Opis:
This study is an attempt to assess the impact of small farms (SF) on the regional food product circulation of specific key products in selected, fragmented, agrarian regions in Poland and Portugal. The empirical study is based on the analysis of food product maps which were developed based on data from a survey conducted among owners of small farms and small food businesses at focus group meetings and workshops organized in 2017 and 2018 in the Nowotarski and Nowosądecki subregions in Poland and in the Alentejo Central and Oeste subregions in Portugal. Qualitative data analysis was conducted using uniform methodology. In each of the subregions, focus groups helped to confront the assumptions resulting from surveys and corroborate the flows and fluxes described in the developed food product maps. Data collected during focus groups were enriched by data gathered during regional workshops that focused on food system governance. It was concluded that food product maps indicate interesting relationship flows of small farmers’ products along the food system, highlighting the role of fluxes connecting small farmers with other actors regarding specific key products. Several similarities and disparities between regional KP production flows in the Portuguese and Polish subregions, based on the type of key product, the various distribution channels and farming capacities present in each subregion were observed.

Opis:
We report a complete left fourth metatarsal collected from rocks of the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) “El Gallo” Formation exposed along the Pacific Ocean near El Rosario, Baja California, México. The metatarsal IV was part of an arctometatarsalian metatarsus, as evidenced by a deep medial notch proximally and extensive articulation for metatarsal III. This condition, along with the U-shape of the proximal end, supports identification as tyrannosauroid. It is assigned to Tyrannosauridae based on features on the posterior surface of the shaft, but finer taxonomic resolution is not possible. Compared to other tyrannosauroids, the metatarsal is relatively short, closely resembling the proportions of the gracile Albertosaurus sarcophagus rather than the much more massive, robust metatarsals of Tyrannosaurus rex. The Baja tyrannosaurid metatarsal is shorter than almost all other tyrannosauroid fourth metatarsals, raising the possibility that it pertains to an immature individual. North American tyrannosauroids are best known from the northern coast of the Western Interior Seaway, as well as less frequently on the southern coast of the seaway in Utah and New Mexico. The new record in Baja marks the first unambiguous skeletal material of a tyrannosaurid both in México and along the Pacific coast.

Opis:
The work consisted in functionalizing gold nanoparticles to analytically detect heavy metals in contaminated water; in Tayacaja-Huancavelica-Peru, using physical method of laser ablation. The 450 mJ/p Nd:YAG was used as a pulsed laser generator for the production of colloids from AuNPs by the top-down approach; the target was a 1 cm x 1.5 cm high purity gold metallic plate with a thickness of 1 mm, inside a 20 ml cuvette of deionized water, containing 5 ml of L-Cysteine ≥ 75% purity. Nanoparticle colloids were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy from 200 to 1160 nm range. Using a convex lens, the gold metal plate was ablated by the laser equipment, located 10 cm from the focus; with λ = 1064 nm and λ = 532 nm with energy equivalent to 60.28 mJ/p and 32.99 mJ/p respectively, with a ratio of 2 Hz, for 30 and 60 min. All the samples produced were subjected to the dispersion process by sonication at 40 KHz for one hour. The functionalized nanoparticles presented a resonance displacement of the maximum wavelength peak with respect to the reference at approximately 22.51 nm; consequently, the increase in diameter occurred at 52.10 nm. The sensitive capacity of the functionalized nanoparticles was verified for different concentrations of analytes in water, made up of divalent heavy metal ions Cd2+, Pb2+, and trivalent nonmetal As3+. At a concentration greater than 500 uM, the color of the functionalized nanoparticles turned bluish, due to the presence of positive ions. Therefore, it was stated that the functionalized nanoparticles enable the detection of heavy metals in water by color variation.

Opis:
Blastocystis sp. is a commonly reported enteric protistan parasite in faecal specimens with a worldwide distribution afflicting both humans and a wide range of animals. The aim of this study is to characterize the subtypes (STs) of Blastocystis sp. isolates from asymptomatic individuals in an urban community in Pateros, Metro Manila, Philippines. The 600-bp small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) barcoding region of Blastocystis sp. isolates was amplified and sequenced using the primers RD5 and BhRDr. Subtypes were identified by uploading the sequences onto the Basic Local Alignment and Search Tool (BLAST) websites, the Blastocystis Subtype (18S) and Sequence Typing (MLST) Database and by construction of a phylogenetic tree. Twenty-nine (29) out of 35 individuals were detected positive for Blastocystis sp. ST3 is the most common among the three STs detected (65.5%), followed by ST1 (31.0%) and ST4 (3.44%). This study showed that DNA barcoding can serve as a helpful tool to investigate the diversity of Blastocystis sp. in the Philippines.
