Letters, which are the basis of the article, are a part of Jan Karlowicz’s (a 19th century ethnographer, lexicographer) heritage kept in the historical archive in Vilnius. They are evidence of correspondence between Jan Karłowicz and Stefania Ulanowska, the author of Łotysze Inflant Polskich, a w szczególności z gminy wielońskiej powiatu rzeżyckiego since October 1889 until January 1890 during Ulanowska’s stay in the village of Wielony, now Viļāni (Latvia). The correspondence is a source of rich material including information about Ulanowska that has not been published so far as well as data of Latgale’s and its inhabitants’ past. Moreover, it is a unique evidence of scientific peregrinations. These letters have their contribution in ethnographic research on the former territory of Poland as they show circumstances and methods of exploration used in the 19th century. At the same time they can be an interesting gloss for research over Latgalian dialects as far as names of material culture are concerned.
Listy, stanowiące podstawę omówienia, pochodzą ze spuścizny Jana Karłowicza (XIX-wiecznego etnografa, leksykografa) przechowywanej w litewskim archiwum historycznym w Wilnie. Są one świadectwem korespondencji prowadzonej przez Jana Karłowicza i Stefanię Ulanowską – m.in. autorkę Łotyszy Inflant Polskich, a w szczególności z gminy wielońskiej powiatu rzeżyckiego, od października 1889 r. do stycznia 1890 r. podczas pobytu badaczki w miejscowości Wielony, obecnie Viļāni (Łotwa). Korespondencja ta dostarcza dość bogatego materiału, zawierającego informacje dotychczas niedrukowane na temat Ulanowskiej. Przynosi także sporo danych z przeszłości Łatgalii i jej mieszkańców. Poza tym stanowi jednostkowe świadectwo peregrynacji naukowych. Listy te wnoszą wkład do historii badań etnograficznych na terenach dawnej Rzeczpospolitej, unaoczniają okoliczności, metody eksploracji w wieku XIX. Jednocześnie mogą być interesującą glosą do badań nad gwarami łatgalskimi w zakresie nazw kultury materialnej.

The article aims to determine the status and origin of the verb pluszczyć in three Slavic languages. The analysis of linguistic data has shown that, in terms of diachronic perspective, the unit under scrutiny is a semantic innovation that is common to Belarusian, Ukrainian and Polish (the Mazovian dialect), but has a slightly different character in each of these languages. While in Belarusian pluszczyć belongs to the lexical inventory of literary language, in Ukrainian it appears rather occassionally, but in Polish it is a regionalism (Podlasie) that can be synchronically considered as a loanword adopted from Belarusian.

The article is a successive part of the considerations on language contacts in relation to lexis. Analysed are words characteristic of the Polish‑Eastern Slavic borderland, where it is difficult to unequivocally decide whether they are borrowings, references, or examples of the shared Slavic heritage. The following names were interpreted in this respect: binduga ‘a place by the river where wood is deposited for floating, rafts are made and launched’, chaszcze ‘thicket, bushes, scrub’, chudoba ‘livestock’, chusta ‘a sheet of linen or other clothing fabric’, chusty ‘linen (to be washed)’; chołosznie ‘trousers’, kołosza, chołosza ‘trouser leg’, łukno and ustaw ‘vessels for honey storage’ and at the same time ‘units of measurement of honey’, miękiny ‘chaff’, miękuszka ‘bread pupl’; nawleczka, nawłoka, nawłoczka ‘pillowcase, duvet cover’, ‘furniture cover’; niewiasta, niewiastka ‘daughter‑in‑law’, żmykać ‘hand‑wash’. A detailed tracing of the geography, development of individual forms, directions of the inflow of words discussed in the text shows the multiplicity of ways in which individual lexical items penetrate borderland dialect systems. The most interesting examples are those in which the same development outcome is triggered by completely different phonetic processes.

The text discusses words occurring in the Polish-East Slavic borderlands and prevalent in eastern Polish dialects. Differntiation between old references and loans in this area is not always easy. The material presented here is very diverse. In the case of certain words, identifying them as East Slavic loans with an indisputable source is possible, while in the case of others it is diffi cult to identify the direct source of the loan. Among the words recorded in the East Slavic borderlands we can fi nd those whose range in Polish dialects seems to indicate the possibility of Ruthenian infl uence; however, their Polish phonetic form implies their native origin and one should speak about an old reference in this respect. We also encounter Pan-Slavic words, where a doubt arises as to whether they are loans or old references in Polish in the East Slavic area and Eastern Poland.

The article attempts to differentiate, on the basis of selected words recorded in the Polish-East Slavic borderland, whether we are dealing with language loans or old references. The analysis takes into account e.g. ethymological, morphological and geographical criteria. The study focuses on the following words: cot ‘an even number’, czapigi, czepigi ‘plough handle’, had ‘an abominable animal’ and hydzić się ‘loathe’, ‘abhor’, ‘denigrate’, kosiec ‘scyther’, liszka ‘an odd number’, liszny/liszni ‘superfluous’, ‘supernumerary’, przewiąsło ‘a straw belt to tie sheaths siewiec ‘sower’, śloza ‘tear’, żeniec ‘harvester’, żenich, żeniuch ‘bridegroom’, ‘fiancé’, żnieja ‘female harvester’. Recognition as borrowings may be based on those word forms where phonetic elements characteristic of other languages, unknown in Polish, occur. Analysis of certain words has revealed the occurrence of Proto-Slavic and all- -Slavic words, preserved in the Polish language as relics, in peripheral areas. In some cases, it is difficult to make clear-cut decisions, because, for example, the stem of the word is a continuation of the Proto-Slavic forms, to be found in the Polish language, while the derivatives are borrowings.

The article presents issues concerning the project of creation of the Atlas of East Slavic dialects of Bialystok Region (Atlas gwar wschodniosłowiańskich Białostocczyzny – AGWB) and its realization. The crucial issues are shown from linguistic, information and computer points of view, taking into account the special features of dialectal material. Information referring to the Atlas of East Slavic dialects of Bialystok Region, a publication significant for Slavic linguistic geography, is also presented. The consecutive stages of preparing the base, i.a. preliminary choice of computer tools, suggested database structure, its subsequent modifications along with the ER model and initial stages of system implementation (export of data, the choice of database administration system), are presented in the text. The problem of creation/modification of the phonetic alphabet (socalled ZRCola typeface vs. AGWB typeface) and the aspect of sorting data saved in this alphabet constitute separate issues for consideration. Modifications of data representation system in relation to the initial objec tives are discussed in the article, taking into account the future needs of users (connection with GoogleMaps application, hipermedial connections with the system of scanned source materials, etc.).

The article attempts to determine how to classify the verb szczupać ‘to touch, to feel’ that is present in Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian languages and also in the Polish-East Slavic borderland region. As has been revealed by the analysis of documents, linguistic data gathered from historical dictionaries and dictionaries of dialects along with literary sources, the verb in question is an East Slavic borrowing that has been adopted locally in a major part of Poland’s eastern borderland and reinforced by the existence of derivatives.

W artykule omówiono zagadnienia ortograficzne i pisowniowe w ankietach do Niemieckiego atlasu językowego zapisanych w latach 80. XIX w. w części środkowej i wschodniej współczesnych Mazur – regionu położonego w północno-wschodniej części Polski. Ankiety zawierają tłumaczenia 40 zdań niemieckich (ułożonych przez bibliotekarza z Marburga Georga Wenkera) na miejscową gwarę. W odniesieniu do pisowni i ortografii w analizowanym materiale uwzględniono m.in. występowanie kreskowanego é, np. lepiéj, Śniég, używanie j na oznaczenie g, np. inaczeg, jagka, nag więczey, w tym jako rezultat asynchronicznej wymowy spółgłosek wargowych miękkich, np. c’ezegenc’, dschischag, dzegenc ‘dziewięć’. Zwrócono uwagę na znaczną różnorodność zapisów samogłoski y, np. y,᷆ ӳ, ỳ, ÿ, ў. Odnotowano przykłady zapisów na sposób niemiecki, np. zapisy z zamiast c: zale zarno ‘całe czarno’, uzuł ‘najwięcej się uczył’; tz zamiast c: motzno, umentzone. Omówione ankiety wyraźnie wskazują na utrzymanie się dawnych polskich tradycji pisowniowych, a z drugiej strony uwidacznia się wpływ ortografii niemieckiej.
The article discusses the orthography and spelling in questionnaires for the German Language Atlas written in the 1880s in the central and eastern parts of contemporary Masuria, a region in the north-east of Poland. The questionnaires contain translations of 40 German sentences (compiled by Georg Wenker, a librarian from Marburg) into the local dialect. With regard to the spelling and orthography, the material analysed takes into account, among other things, the occurrence of é, e.g. lepiéj, Śniég, the use of j to denote g, e.g. inaczeg, jagka, nag więczey, also as a result of asynchronous pronunciation of soft labial consonants, e.g. c’ezegenc’, dschischag, dzegenc ‘dziewięć’. The text highlights the wide variety of renditions in writing of the y vowel, e.g. y᷆, ӳ, ỳ, ÿ, ў. Examples are provided of German-related spelling, e.g. with the use of z instead of c: zalezarno ‘całe czarno’, uzuł ‘najwięcej się uczył’; tz instead of c: motzno, umentzone. The questionnaires under discussion clearly show the persistence of old Polish spelling traditions, while on the other hand they indicate the influence of German orthography.
