Tunnel thrusters are propulsion and active control devises that provide a side force, or transverse thrust, to support mooring operations or position keeping. They shorten the time of manoeuvring, reduce the cost of towage and since inception, manoeuvrability specifically in ports has become a lot easier. Tunnel thrusters can either be operated manually or with the help of Dynamic Positioning systems which makes it even more efficient. Theoretically, the transverse force due to tunnel thruster action should generate only lateral and rotational motion. Therefore, it is typical and a common practice during manoeuvring simulations that the longitudinal motion due to the action of tunnel thrusters is neglected. Nevertheless, the experience of masters and pilots shows that some longitudinal motion due to the action of tunnel thrusters appears. This paper shows some examples of turning manoeuvres carried out with bow thrusters only, i.e. no additional control devices or tug assistance have been used. The manoeuvres have been carried with minimal possible initial longitudinal nor lateral speed. Model tests have been done with the use of large manned models of VLCS, PCTC and LNG carrier, which differ in hull shape, dimensions and shape coefficients. Results obtained from the tests confirm that the motion caused by bow thruster besides rotational and lateral motion consists additionally of longitudinal motion. Analysis of the combination of motions due to the action of tunnel thrusters have been done and some rationale for this phenomenon has been presented. Additionally a short analysis of position of pivot point during tunnel thruster test has been carried out.

This paper presents the preliminary part of comprehensive manoeuvring open- water tests of a gas carrier model. The paper focuses on open water experiments with an azimuthing podded propulsor. The test program was carried out in the cavitation tunnel and the large towing tank of Ship Hydromechanics Division, Ship Design and Research Centre, Gdańsk. The pod was tested as a pushing unit with a 161.3 mm diameter propeller. Steering forces were measured in the range of advance coefficient from 0.0 to 0.8 combined with the range of deflection angles from -45° up to +45°. Measurements on the pod without propeller were also performed. The experiment results are presented in the form of non-dimensional coefficients in function of advance coefficient and deflection angle. Analysis of the experimental results and the conclusions are presented.

The paper presents shallow water experiments of a self-propelled, free running model of an inland water motor barge. In accordance with the Rhine Manoeuvring Standards Rheinschiffsuntersuchungsordnung (RheinSchUO 1995, issue 2005), evasive action manoeuvring tests were realised. Model obtained from DST Duisburg Germany was a 5.00 meters long motor barge built to a scale of 1:20 and propelled with an 80 mm diameter ducted propeller. Tests were carried out in the auxiliary towing tank of the Ship Hydromechanics Division in Gdańsk. The experiment consisted of efficiency analysis of different rudder blades with variable rudder profiles and rudder blade areas. In total the evasive action test was repeated for three different rudder profiles, with three different chord lengths and at three different water depths each. For each particular case the total standard manoeuvre time and side rudder force was measured. These results were compared with the RheinSchUO standards. The model tests programme was realised within the EU CREATING project supported in the 6th Framework Programme.

Opis:
Force Technology has been working intensively with trim optimisation tests for almost last 10 years. Focus has primarily been put on the possible power savings and exhaust gases reduction. This paper describes the trim optimisation process for a large cargo vessel. The physics behind changed propulsive power is described and the analyses in order to elaborate the optimum trimmed conditions are presented. Different methods for prediction of required power in trimmed conditions are presented and results are compared against each other. The methods with their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. On the basis of power prediction, a trim guidance with dedicated SeaTrim® software for ship master is made and presented.

In this paper a new way of derivation of an evolution equation for short pulses in a dielectric waveguide including one model of a metamaterial waveguide is shown. This derivation model relies upon projecting to an orthogonal basis. In our case such orthogonal basis for cylindrical waveguides is chosen as Bessel functions.

Druga cześć pracy przedstawia wyniki badań własnych nad modyfikacją warstwy wierzchniej polietylenu o ultrawysokiej masie cząsteczkowej stosowanego na komponenty panewkowe. Zastosowana modyfikacja polegała na implantacji powierzchni próbek polietylenowych jonami Ar, B, C lub na wzmocnieniu jej siatką z włókien ze stali nierdzewne
The paper consists of two parts. The first is a literature analysis basing on which the authors have presented the history of hip endoprosthesis making and a characteristics of the hip endoprostheses used in medical practice. The other part of the work presents the results of the Institute's own investigation concerning the modification of the surface layer of a ultra high molecular weight polyethylene used for the acetabulum component. The modification applied consisted in implantation of polyethylene sample surfaces with Ar, B, C ions or its reinforcement with a network of stainless steel fibres.

Opis:
Copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) becomes more significant for solar cell applications as an alternative to silicon. The quality of the layer has a critical impact on the final efficiency of the solar cell. An influence of the post-deposition millisecond range flash lamp annealing on the optical and microstructural properties of the CIGS films was investigated. Based on the Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, it is shown that flash lamp annealing reduces the defect concentration and leads to an increase of the photoluminescence intensity by a factor of six compared to the nonannealed sample. Moreover, after flash lamp annealing the degradation of the photoluminescence is significantly suppressed and the absolute absorption in the wavelength range of 200-1200 nm increases by 25%.
