Opis:
The present study was carried out to assess the micropropagation of Cestrum (Cestrum nocturnum L.) by using single nodes and shoot tips excised from soft cuttings using MS salts, 30 g × l-1 sucrose, 7 g × l-1 agar, and different concentrations of plant growth regulators in culture medium. The results revealed that the use of mercuric chloride (0.05%, HgCl2) for 7 minutes was very effective in preventing contamination and gave the highest survival percentage (99%). The highest response (100%) was gained at initiation stage from lateral bud explants on MS medium supplemented with 1.5 mg × l-1 of BA with most of NAA concentrations. However, in case of terminal buds, higher percentages of responses were resulted from the interaction of BA (1.5 mg × l-1) with 0.2 mg × l-1 NAA. The lateral buds also produced more new shoots as well as a higher number of leaves and length of new shoots on the medium supplemented with 1.5 mg × l-1 BA as compared with those from terminal buds. Significant differences were observed at multiplication stage between the lateral buds and terminal buds, since the lateral buds produced a higher number of new shoots and leaves as well as longer new shoots. At rooting stage, the treatment with 1 mg × l-1 IBA gave the highest percentage of rooting (100%), the highest number of roots (13.2 root/explant), and the longest roots (8.44 cm), respectively, on half strength MS medium. Plantlets obtained were transferred to pots and acclimatized with 90% success.
Istotne różnice pomiędzy pąkami bocznymi i pąkami wierzchołkowymi obserwowano w fazie namnażania, ponieważ pąki boczne wytworzyły większą liczbę nowych pędów i liści oraz dłuższe nowe pędy. Uzyskane mikrosadzonki zostały przeniesione do doniczek i aklimatyzowano je z 90% skutecznością.

Opis:
Compounds present in oil sludge such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known to be cytotoxic, mutagenic and potentially carcinogenic. Microorganisms including bacteria and fungi have been reported to degrade oil sludge components to innocuous compounds such as carbon dioxide, water and salts. In the present study, we isolated different bacteria with PAH-degrading capabilities from compost prepared from oil sludge and animal manures. These bacteria were isolated on a mineral base medium and mineral salt agar plates. A total of 31 morphologically distinct isolates were carefully selected from 5 different compost treatments for identification using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the 16S rRNA gene with specific primers (universal forward 16S-P1 PCR and reverse 16S-P2 PCR). The amplicons were sequenced and sequences were compared with the known nucleotides from the GenBank. The phylogenetic analyses of the isolates showed that they belong to 3 different clades; Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. These bacteria identified were closely related to the genera Bacillus, Arthrobacter, Staphylococcus, Brevibacterium, Variovorax, Paenibacillus, Ralstonia and Geobacillus. The results showed that Bacillus species were predominant in all composts. Based on the results of the degradation of the PAHs in the composts and results of previous studies on bacterial degradation of hydrocarbons in oil, the characteristics of these bacterial isolates suggests that they may be responsible for the breakdown of PAHs of different molecular weights in the composts. Thus, they may be potentially useful for bioremediation of oil sludge during compost bioremediation.

Opis:
The assemblage of textiles and electronics in a single structure has led to the development of smart textiles for functional purposes and special products. Conductive yarn as a necessary component of smart textiles is being developed by a number of techniques. The objective of the current study was to impart conductivity to yarn by coating the silver and copper nanoparticles on the surface of multifilament polyester textile fibres. The surface morphology and electrical conductivity of the coated yarns were investigated. The wash ability of the conductive yarns developed was also studied. The yarns showed good retention of the nanoparticles, as proven by the very small loss of the conductivity of the material.
Połączenie tekstyliów i elektroniki w jednej strukturze doprowadziło do rozwoju inteligentnych tekstyliów znajdujących zastosowanie w celach funkcjonalnych i produktach specjalnych.

Opis:
Th e present exploration is focused on the bio-fabrication of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using Trichodesma indicum aqueous leaf extract as a reducing agent. Th e synthesized Ag NPs were productively characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD, and TEM studies. Th e photosynthesis of Ag NPs was done at room temperature for 24 h and at 60°C. Th e green synthesis of spherical-shaped Ag NPs bio-fabricated from T. indicum with a face centred cubic structure showed average particle sizes of 20–50 nm, which is inconsistent with the particle size calculated by the XRD Scherer equation and TEM analysis. We further explored the larvicidal effi cacy of biosynthesized Ag NPs with leaf extracts of T. indicum against Mythimna separata. Th e results showed that Ag NPs (20–50 nm) of T. indicum possess good larvicidal activity against M. separata with an LC50 of 500 ppm. Th us, we can advocate that Ag NPs of 20–50 nm size extracted from T. indicum may be considered in the pest management programme of M. separata in future.

Opis:
This study presents the behavior of a single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/water nanofluid for convective laminar flow inside a straight circular pipe heated by a constant heat flux. Five volume fractions of SWCNT were used to investigate their effect on the heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, temperature distribution and velocity field in comparison with pure water flow. One model for each property was tested to calculate the effective thermal conductivity, effective dynamic viscosity, and effective specific heat of the SWCNT/water mixture. The models were extracted from experimental data of a previous work. The outcomes indicate that the rheological behavior of SWCNT introduces a special effect on the SWCNT/water properties, which vary with SWCNT volume fraction. The results show an improvement in the heat transfer coefficient with increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles. The velocity of SWCNT/water nanofluid increased by adding SWCNT nanoparticles, and the maximum increase was registered at 0.05% SWCNT volume fraction. The mixture temperature is increased with the axial distance of the pipe but a reduction in temperature distribution is observed with the increasing SWCNT volume fraction, which reflects the effect of thermophysical properties of the mixture.

Opis:
The present investigation was conducted to appraise the physiochemical adjustments in contrasting maize cultivars, namely, PakAfgoi (tolerant) and EV-5098 (sensitive) subjected to heat shock. Seven-day-old seedlings were exposed to heat shock for different time intervals (1, 3, 6, 24, 48 and 72 h) and data for various physiochemical attributes determined to appraise time course changes in maize. After 72 h of heat shock, the plants were grown under normal conditions for 5 d and data for different growth attributes and photosynthetic pigments recorded. Exposure to heat shock reduced growth and photosynthetic pigments in maize cultivars. The plants exposed to heat shock for up to 3 h recovered growth and photosynthetic pigments when stress was relieved. A time course rise in the relative membrane permeability, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde contents was recorded particularly in the EV-5098 indicating that heat shock-induced oxidative stress. Activities of different enzymatic antioxidants greatly altered due to heat shock. For instance, an increase in superoxide dismutase activity was recorded in both maize cultivars. The activity of ascorbate peroxidase was greater in Pak-Afgoi. However, the peroxidase and catalase activities were higher in plants of EV-5098. Heat shock caused a significant rise in the proline and decline in the total free amino acids. Overall, the performance of Pak-Afgoi was better in terms of having lesser oxidative damage and greater cellular levels of proline. The results suggested that oxidative stress indicators (relative membrane permeability, H2O2 and malondialdehyde) and proline can be used as markers for heat shock tolerant plants.

Opis:
Hot water storage tanks are devices with high energy consumption, used widely in residential, industrial and commercial sectors. The hot storage tank is a key device in numerous applications such as electrical heaters, solar thermal storage, solar electrical energy production and many others. Its superior technology is favorable for the designers and has a great impact on the market competition. Hot water storage tanks were studied under continuous usage feature, for different inlet types, flow rates, thermal stratification in static and dynamic modes, both experimentally and numerically. The real discrete usage feature has not been analyzed in a proper way. In this study, the experimental and performance analyses with frequent discrete usage of the hot storage tank were performed. Different flow rates of 3, 6, and 9 l/min with 5, 10 and 20 min discrete usage waiting periods were studied. It was found that the thermocline thickness and mixing number increases for both increasing the flow rate due the increment in turbulent mixing potential and increasing the waiting period due to the increase in heat transfer time available between the hot and cold layers. The real data was drawn as is to permit further analyses and data comparison to other researchers. The effect of waiting periods can be used in solar HST to maximize the efficiency of solar collectors as the solar collector efficiency is high at low temperatures.
