Opis:
Ethnography requires immersion in the field work and the adoption of two perspectives: internal and external. Pure visibility, says Lambert Wiesing, presents things as exclusively visible, released from the laws of physics. You can touch material objects – that entails the possibility of hearing, smelling, and vision. Images could be printed: we feel the smell of ink and a printing machine, texture of media – paper, cardboard or foil. However Wiesing stresses: all we experience in a picture are the qualities detectable by the sense of sight. In this article I present the arguments that the images may be the informants, and ethnography of visibility allows us for awakening the sociological imagination and for analyzing material and visual aspect of the practices. Arguments are based on the interviews conducted with the “Invisible city” project team as well as on the analysis of images from the database: www.niewidzialnemiasto.pl.

Opis:
This article present four species of space, species that express, through the material culture, different forms of gathering: the crowd, the lonely crowd, community, co-operation and the way that people experience closeness and togetherness. The four species of space are: the space of mass, of individualism, of tribe and, last but not least, the space of solidarity. We can think of the species of space as a metaphor which we can use to describe the material realm, but also as a tool for changing the world and creating social change. We live together. However, we are not only tied up with longterm relationships but with weak ties. The latter are based on the materiality. I suggest that space is not purely physical (size, shape, weight) but it is rather the script, the specie which, in the dynamic evolutionary process, adapts to the historical and social circumstances.

Opis:
This article is devoted to the relation between privacy and behaviour in public places. It has already been more than half a century since Erving Goffman published his notes on the social organization of gatherings. Today, the context for meetings in public places is round-the-clock monitoring—exposing oneself online, giving other persons access to one’s privacy through internet applications, and being under the eye of the camera 24 hours a day. This context means that the delicate balance between—to use Goffman’s terminology—the stage and the wings has been disturbed. On the basis of field material visual diaries kept by over a dozen persons in the Poznań area), the author concludes that people spontaneously create privacy shields. He presents ten grassroots protective strategies to show that people in contemporary cities spontaneously balance what is private with what is public.

Opis:
Pursuant to Art. 52 of Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts, “civilian objects shall not be the object of attack or of reprisals”. Such objects include hospitals, market squares, schools, residential buildings or modern urban life institutions. Reports on attacks on civilians make us realise the fragility of human beings. How shall we understand the category of ‘civilian’? How does this category function nowadays, and why is it so important for the modern lifestyle? These questions will be addressed through the exploration of the Civil March for Aleppo case study. The march that started in Berlin on 26th December 2016 is an inherently apolitical initiative which was organised by civilians for civilians. However, since it started there has been a discussion among the marching Syrians and Europeans on political issues surrounding the march and the ‘illusion of objectivity’ – whether other, engaged parties’ viewpoint should be taken into consideration in the march. I joined the march twice, for a few days, had a lot of conversations with the participants and took part in discussions that sometimes turned into aggressive, hourslong, argumentative exchanges. The words of one female activist saying that “peace without justice is just an empty word”, I treat as a starting point for my exploration of the notion of aptness in the combining of politics with humanitarianism. On the one hand, campaigners, such as Linda Polman and David Rieff, politicians, such as Colin Powell, and philosophers, Giorgio Agamben, criticise the ‘neutrality of humanitarianism’ rule, because strict following of this principle results in the cooperation of NGOs with authoritarian regimes and losing the credibility of peace keeping missions. On the other hand, philosophers specialising in armed conflicts, such as David W. Lovell and Igor Primoratz, point out that the civilian’s immunity is not categorical. This criticism is not without merit, but participation in the march made me understand how important it is to pose questions, from both the faraway, overseas, civilians’ perspective and from the European one. Namely, are we – the outsiders – capable enough to understand the complexity of the Syrian conflict and take one of the sides? Or, the only thing we can do is not adopt a particular political stance but adopt a distinctive humanitarian attitude. Should initiatives such as the civilian March for Aleppo remain neutral or, rather, should they be against something (whether it is the Assad rule, Russia, or European decision-makers or somebody else entirely)? Is it possible to be impartial without being neutral? All these questions are significant due to the fundamental separation of politics and war from the civilians’ life.

Opis:
This text concerns main moral issues connected with the armed conflict currently underway in Syria. On the basis of an analysis of texts published in the opinion-forming American journal The New York Review of Books, the author tries to show the complexity of the conflict in terms of the problems faced by world opinion. The author concludes that we, ordinary citizens, and the leaders of the world powers, in undertaking actions (participation in military actions, taking sides, humanitarian aid) had to resolve certain dilemmas and that in doing so they took into account their subjective interests. The author thus confirms his original thesis that the contemporary world is no longer guided by international solidarity or the UN principle of a “responsibility to protect.”

Opis:
This article was written on the basis of the project ‘See Culture: The Archive of Visual Materials from Research into Culture in Poland’ conducted in 2014. It speaks of the internet creation of a social database using visual materials—the Visual Archive (archiwumwizualne.pl). The authors present their findings from interviews with members of the research teams and directors of the projects that were included in the internet archive. These primarily concern the various approaches and research practices of the interlocutors and their definitions of visual material’s potential as a tool in social research. The profiles of the researchers presented earlier is then compared to the category of the practice-oriented intellectual, which broadens the classical understanding of the intellectual and points to an emerging manner of thinking about research practice in contemporary social sciences. The usefulness of the Visual Archive for the practice-oriented intellectual is indicated.
