Opis:
This work introduces a novel approach to stability and stabilization of nonlinear systems with delayed multivariable inputs; it provides exponential estimates as well as a guaranteed cost of the system solutions. The result is based on an exact convex representation of the nonlinear system which allows a Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional to be applied in order to obtain sufficient conditions in the form of linear matrix inequalities. These are efficiently solved via convex optimization techniques. A real-time implementation of the developed approach on the twin rotor MIMO system is included.

Opis:
Deterministic mechanics has been extensively used by engineers as they needed models that could predict the behavior of designed structures and components. However, modern engineering is now shifting to a new approach where the uncertainty analysis of the model inputs enables to obtain more accurate results. This paper presents an application of this new approach in the field of the stress analysis. In this case, a two-dimensional stress elasticity model is compared with the experimental stress results of five different size tubes measured with resistive strain gages. Theoretical and experimental uncertainties have been calculated by means of the Monte Carlo method and a weighted least square algorithm, respectively. The paper proposes that the analytical engineering models have to integrate an uncertainty component considering the uncertainties of the input data and phenomena observed during the test, that are difficult to adapt in the analytical model. The prediction will be thus improved, the theoretical result being much closer to the real case.

The object of this study was to compare and quantify carbon sequestration and erosion control in two type soil and three land uses. Direct measurements of sediment retained in dams with mesh and branches have been taken. In conclusion it may indicate that these dams are an efficient filter control on gully erosion, which is higher in cropland. The capture of organic carbon was higher in natural vegetation due to higher content of organic matter in soil.

Opis:
Cell manipulation using external magnetic fields has been proposed to accelerate the neck reendothelization of saccular unruptured stented intracranial aneurysms. This work presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a Saccular Brain Aneurysm that incorporates a helicoidal stent. An Eulerian-Lagrangian model implemented in ANSYS-Fluent is used to simulate the hemodynamics in the aneurysm. In silico studies have been conducted to describe the incidence of the magnetic field direction, frequency and amplitude on the blood hemodynamics and particle capture efficiency, when an external magnetic field is used to trap magnetically labeled particles traveling through the aneurysm. It is found that the magnetic field direction affects the particle concentration in the target region. Simulation results show that the highest particle capture efficiency is obtained with a 1T magnetic field amplitude in an open bore MRI scanner, when a permanent magnet is used.

Opis:
This study describes a novel spectral LED-based tunable light source used for customized lighting solutions, especially for the reconstruction of CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) standard illuminants. The light source comprises 31 spectral bands ranging from 400 to 700 nm, an integrating cube and a control board with a 16-bit resolution. A minimization algorithm to calculate the weighting values for each channel was applied to reproduce illuminants with precision. The differences in spectral fitting and colorimetric parameters showed that the reconstructed spectra were comparable to the standard, especially for the D65, D50, A and E illuminants. Accurate results were also obtained for illuminants with narrow peaks such as fluorescents (F2 and F11) and a high-pressure sodium lamp (HP1). In conclusion, the developed spectral LED-based light source and the minimization algorithm are able to reproduce any CIE standard illuminants with a high spectral and colorimetric accuracy able to advance available custom lighting systems useful in the industry and other fields such as museum lighting.

Opis:
The influence of deep cryogenic treatment and PVD coatings on the wear resistance and toughness of D2, S7, H13 and M4 tool steels were studied. Three different PVD coatings were applied after heat treatment: AlCrN, TiAlN, TiCrN. In order to research the wear resistance, the ball-on-disk tribological test was used per ASTM G-99; material toughness was evaluated through the Charpy-V test. Wear scars were examined through optical microscopy to calculate the volume loss. It is found that cryogenic treatment improved wear resistance and toughness up to 63% and 12% respectively. The material with the best combination of wear resistance properties and toughness was S7 with cryogenic treatment and TiAlN coating.

Opis:
Malaria diagnosis continues to be one of the most important steps in the cycle of control specially in endemic countries with low parasitic load infections. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and ultrasensitive PCR (Us-PCR) are two promising candidates for malaria diagnosis. A cross sectional study performed at King Faisal Hospital, Taif KSA involved patients suffering from signs and symptoms suggesting of malaria, 35 blood samples diagnosed by Nested Multiplex PCR as a reference method (13 P. falciparum, 17 P. vivax, 3 mixed P. falciparum and P. vivax) plus two negative controls were selected to be included in this study to analyse the performance of two LAMP methods (LAMP OptiGene® and LAMP WarmStart®) and two ultrasensitive PCRs (Us-PCR TARE-2 and Us-PCR Var-ATS). LAMP OptiGene® and LAMP WarmStart® performances were identical and better than the performance of Us PCR TARE 2 and Us-PCR var-ATS for P. falciparum, achieving 93.75% sensitivity, 100% specificity and 97.17% accuracy versus 87.5% sensitivity, 100% specificity and 94.29% accuracy for the Us PCR TARE 2 and 81.25% sensitivity, 94.74% specificity and 88.57% accuracy for the Us PCR var-ATS respectively. In P. vivax diagnosis LAMP OptiGene® performed excellently with 100% sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy while LAMP WarmStart® and Us-PCR Cox1 achieved 100% sensitivity, specificity 93.33% and 97.14% accuracy. The study results highlighted the benefits of using LAMP techniques for field diagnosis of malaria in different settings where the need for a more sensitive and reliable molecular tool is mandatory but at the same time removing the high cost, long turnaround time and the need of highly specialized trained technicians to perform more sophisticated molecular techniques.

Opis:
The Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is the next generation of current mobile telecommunication networks. LTE has a new flat radio-network architecture and a significant increase in spectrum efficiency. In this paper, a computationally-efficient tool for dynamic system-level LTE simulations is proposed. A physical layer abstraction is performed to predict link-layer performance with a low computational cost. At link layer, there are two important functions designed to increase the network capacity: Link Adaptation and Dynamic Scheduling. Other Radio Resource Management functionalities such as Admission Control and Mobility Management are performed at network layer. The simulator is conceived for large simulated network time to allow evaluation of optimization algorithms for the main network-level functionalities.
