    W dzisiejszych dyskusjach na temat radykalizmu społecznego dominuje przekonanie, że niesie on poważne zagrożenia dla sfery publicznej, podobnie do wszelkich przejawów ekstremizmu, fundamentalizmu i innym skrajnych postaw. Tymczasem literatura przedmiotu wskazuje jak bardzo takie interpretacje są mylne i odbiegają od złożonej, w istocie, natury tego fenomenu. Przytoczone tu przykłady zastosowania pojęcia radykalizmu jako predylekcji filozoficznej, psychologicznej i społecznej skłaniają do rewizji tej, podszytej niepokojem społecznym, konwencjonalnej wykładni pojęcia i zjawiska radykalizmu.
    There is a strong conviction about social radicalism carrying serious threats to the public spere, similiar to all manifestations of extremism, fundamentalism and other extreme attitudes. Meanwhile, subject literature indicates how misleading such interpretations are and deviate from the complex nature of this phenomenon. Various examples of the concept of radicalism understood as philosophical, psychological and social predicament, reviewed in this article, should lead to a necessary revision of the dominant conventional interpretation of radicalism.

    W przedstawionym niżej artykule po pierwsze, argumentujemy za teoretyczną koniecznością uwzględnienia w refleksji dotyczącej ruchów społecznych antropologicznego zagadnienia podmiotowości oraz filozoficzno-politycznej kwestii eidos sfery publicznej. Czynimy to w odniesieniu do stosunkowo słabo znanego teoretykom ruchów społecznych niemieckiego myśliciela Helmutha Plessnera. Po drugie, w ślad za Plessnerem, podejmujemy refleksję na temat radykalizmu społecznego i radykalizmu „jako takiego”. Poszukujemy w nim znaczeń i wartości, które zaginęły w potocznym i strywializowanym jego rozumieniu bądź też są mu przypisywane „na wyrost”. Nie zgadzamy się na stosowanie pojęcia „radykalizm” w odniesieniu do przejawów zwykłego wandalizmu, głupoty lub ksenofobii. Po trzecie, usiłujemy sformułować – wymagające dalszej weryfikacji – zasady „socjologii radykalizmu”. Na przekór utartym poglądom upatrujemy w nim otwartości wypełnionej uczuciem deficytu, niespełnienia, żalem i nadzieją. Dostrzegamy w uczciwym radykalizmie postawę dopuszczającą „obcość”, a więc zasadniczo różną od ekstremizmu lub fundamentalizmu. Na koniec widzimy w nim zjawisko typowe dla małych grup społecznych, które znajdują się w stanie przejściowego „granicznego” wyczekiwania.

    In Central and Eastern Europe populist regimes are attracting attention as are sult of the traumatic legacy of communism, the subsequent overburdening reforms and exhausting systemic transformation, resurgence of ever-lurking nationalism, regional conservatism, parochialism and cultural chauvinism, and/or as an example of the structural shortcomings of young democracies at the borders of civilization. The subject literature also indicates numerous and universal elements of populist governments, present as well in this part of Europe. Without prejudging the aptness and strength of these various concepts and arguments, this article is an attempt to include in these wideranging themes a particular issue that absorbs conservative populists, namely “childhood” and “children”. While the problem of children in politics has already received numerous interpretations, the importance of childhood in the right-wing populist discourse and politics has so far remained an issue discussed only occasionally. We put forward the thesis that children play an important and specific role in the right-wing populist superstructure - they constitute an illusory picture of the nation, an allegory of its renewal, as well as a convenient, though inconsistently used, instrument for achieving political, ideological and propaganda goals. Attitudes towards children can be an important characteristic of populism as such, and should be taken into account in research on the subject. We will illustrate these problems using the example of Poland and the populist Law and Justice (PiS) Party that is in power there now.

    Sociological interpretations of the processes of “radicalization” should take into account the complex and interdisciplinary nature of the phenomenon of “radicalism” itself. This article illustrates some of the intricacies involved here. Radicalism is an intellectual and philosophical attitude that reaches the roots [radix] of things, and thus is supposed to enable a more thorough understanding and transformation of reality. In this form, radicalism was for some the embodiment of humanism and progressiveness, for others it led to “spiritual intoxication.” Still others saw in it a neutral attitude of quasi-religious prophetism. In psychological interpretations, radicalism had its roots in the depths of the human psyche. It was interpreted as an expression of infantile emotionality, resentment or neurasthenia, it was associated with repressed needs, madness, conspiracy thinking or hatred. Interpreted as a culturally and historically relative phenomenon, radicalism reflects the power of hegemonic ideas and the phenomenon of specific public spheres. From this perspective, it has been interpreted as an expression of the democratic culture of narcissistic individualism, the progress of liberal democracies, left-wing revolutionary movements and reactionary right-wing movements, as well as a strictly modern phenomenon. As a social phenomenon, radicalism has been interpreted in numerous ways, especially in the sociology of social movements. An original contribution to its understanding was made by the ahistorical anthropology of the Polish philosopher Grażyna Żurkowska, whose concept is discussed in the main part of this article.

    W poszukiwaniu odpowiedzi na pytanie dlaczego partia rządząca w Polsce (PiS) utrzymuje tak silne poparcie, uciekamy się do argumentów z pogranicza socjologii, analizy dyskursu, psychologii społecznej i filozofii kultury, utrzymując, że PiS konsekwentnie prowadzi populistyczną politykę, która opiera się na budowaniu silnych antagonizmów społecznych i podsycaniu krzywdy. Pojęcie krzywdy ma wyjątkową i niespotykaną moc, która działa na uczucia i wyobraźnię ludzi. To sprawia, że jej przywoływanie jest szczególnie poręcznym narzędziem zarządzania sumieniami i przekonaniami obywateli. W tym duchu rozważamy, w jaki sposób krzywda i związane z nią pojęcia (resentyment) zaprzęgnięte są w politykę populistyczną, jak dyskurs krzywdy uobecnia się w najnowszej polityce historycznej kraju, i jak może przysparzać niektórym grupom społecznym „perwersyjnej” satysfakcji. W tej połowicznie uświadomionej taktyce, którą określamy jako „politykę krzywdy”, upatrujemy jednak długofalowych destrukcyjnych konsekwencji.
    Answering the question of why the ruling party in Poland (PiS) maintains such strong support, we refer to various arguments and disciplines, from sociology, discourse analysis, and social psychology to cultural philosophy. We maintain that PiS consistently conducts populist politics, building on strong collective antagonisms and fuelling the social sense of harm. The concept of “harm” has a unique and exceptional power that affects the feelings and the imagination of people. This means that evoking this feeling of harm recalling it proves to be a particularly convenient tool to manage people’s consciences and beliefs. In this spirit, we consider how “harm” and its related concepts (resentment) are bound with populist politics, and how the “discourse of harm” is actually present in the recent memory of politics in Poland, and how it can give some social groups “perverse” satisfaction. However, what we see in this semi-conscious tactic, which we describe as the “policy of harm”, is long-term destructive consequences.

    The growth of nationalism and communitarian egoisms are frequently explained in terms of populism. This diagnosis not only says little about the essence of the problem, but it prevents a rational response to the associated risks. Instead, we propose to describe the current situation in terms of „social unrest”, which is expressed both in the reactionary attitudes of the extreme right, as well as in radical left. Unrest also points to the broader phenomenon of social movements, which express and respond to the real problems and conflicts of contemporary Europe. In place of uninformative view of the „spectrum of populism” we offer a complex interpretation, which considers anti-systemic movements as a reaction to the deficiencies of liberal democracy, turbo-capitalism, the crisis of political life, a response to painful costs of modernization, pathologies of mass culture and the primacy of science oriented culture. We also discuss the manifestations of a separate phenomenon of Manichaeism and political cynicism, which we consider as significant for populism.

    Human rights are one of the main European policy horizons, and also the basic pillar of the social and moral order in contemporary world. This does not change the fact that specific and complex narrative of human rights provokes important controversies, as well as open criticism. In the present article we indicate the main thrust of these doubts and objections. Three distinguished fi gures of this criticism we describe as cultural, epistemological and political. Each of them has its numerous representatives, but we introduce only few of them. They are Charles Taylor, Richard Rorty and Pierre Manent. What strikes us in this debate is the fact that it focuses most of the major dilemmas associated with the European integration project. The disagreements about human rights refl ects indeed the debate over the future shape of Europe.

Zgodnie z jej założeniami badanie przeprowadzono w środowisku organizatorów burzliwych manifestacji ACTA-wistów, by dociec kim oni byli, czego chcieli oraz jaki mieli wpływ na zmianę polityczną. Wyniki interwencji socjologicznej zostały uzupełnione o źródła internetowe i prasowe, wzbogacające kontekst analiz, a także o wyniki badań ilościowych.

    In the tradition of political thought the matter of the scale of the state, namely its size and population, was a kind of pretext to consider the topics significantly different from the purely technical ones. In the article, we investigate these subtle considerations in the classical texts of Plato, Aristotle and St. Augustine, as well as Thomas More’s and Campanella’s utopian concepts of the state, Rousseau’s Social Contract, Montesquieu’s thoughts, or American opponents of the federal union. We propose a thesis that a metaphor of a small, territorially limited republic gave an insight into the significance of the character of community, unity and political stability, the issues of control and maintaining peace, but it generated as well an interesting story about human nature, which is torn by conflicting passions of fear and love.
