Opis:
The description of a new genus (Apeomyoides) of eomyid rodent from the Miocene of Nevada increases the diversity of known taxa, enhances the geographic range, and extends the biochronology for the Apeomyinae (Eomyidae). Three groups of Eomyidae are known from the fossil record of North America. Of the three groups, Neogene taxa include four genera representing the Eomyinae and two genera representing the Apeomyinae; no genera of the subfamily Yoderimyinae are known from the Neogene of the continent. This diversity represents a significant reduction of eomyid taxa compared to the Paleogene, from which 17 genera of eomyines and three genera of yoderimyines are known. In Eurasia, 11 genera of eomyids occurred during the Neogene, with a few taxa that persisted until about 2 million years before present. At present, there are no known eomyids from the last 4.5 million years of the Neogene in North America. Apeomyoides savagei is referable to the subfamily Apeomyinae based on several key structures of the teeth and mandible. This new eomyid is part of the Eastgate local fauna, collected from volcanic ash deposits of the Monarch Mill Formation, Churchill County, Nevada. Apeomyoides has an occlusal pattern that shares characteristics of apeomyines from both North America (Megapeomys and Arikareeomys) and Eurasia (Apeomys and Megapeomys). The unique occlusal pattern and large size of Apeomyoides demonstrates that not all eomyids from North America were small or that their lineages decreased in size through time. Apeomyoides also may provide evidence, which challenges the hypothesis that eomyids within a single lineage from North America became more lophodont in geologically younger genera.

Opis:
Introduction. To assess the across-shift changes of cytokine concentrations in nasal lavage (NAL) samples were collected from workers exposed to bacterial cell wall components present in organic dust in three different occupational environments. Materials and method. The study was conducted in 38 employees including 10 workers from a municipal waste sorting plant (WSP), 20 from a sewage treatment plant (STP) and 8 from an office building (OB), who were established as a reference group, not exposed to organic dust. Interleukins 1β (IL-1β), 6 (IL-6), 8 (IL-8) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were examined in NAL before and after work shift on Wednesdays. Bioaerosol exposure was determined by personal measurements and analysed for organic dust, endotoxins (END) and peptidoglycans (PGN). Results. The analysis included the results for IL-8 only, because for the other cytokines their concentrations in 80% of cases were below the detection level. The most polluted were the workplaces in WSP with average concentrations of organic dust – 3.47 mg/m3, END – 96.31 ng/m3 and PGN – 571.88 ng/m3. The results of IL-8 showed a significant difference between the studied groups after the work shift (p=0.007). Among WSP workers concentrations of IL-8 increased also significantly (p=0.015) during the work shift. Multivariate analysis showed that organic dust and END were the factors that in the most distinct way (p<0.001) influenced changes of IL-8 levels in NAL. Conclusions. Each alteration in the composition of bioaerosols will probably determine the changes in the mechanisms responsible for both formation and modulation of inflammatory reactions in exposed workers.

Introduction. Workers of pellet production facilities (WPPF) are exposed to high concentrations of wood dust and microbial pollutants. Such stimulation may lead to numerous allergic and toxic reactions, infections, and other non-specific syndromes. Objective. To check the influence of individual traits of workers and characteristic features / factors of their living and working environments on the probability of adverse outcomes’ appearance. Materials and Method. The questionnaire study assessing adverse health effects resulting from individual exposure was conducted among 28 workers of 10 Polish WPPF. The logistic regression (for dichotomous variables) was used to determine the appearance probability (given as odds ratio) of adverse symptoms or diseases. Results and Conclusions. WPPF workers may have an increased risk of developing work-related adverse health outcomes. Both the individual traits and environmental exposure factors significantly influence the probability of their occurrence.

A new genus and species of an amphicyonid from the Bose Basin of Guangxi, south China, is short−jawed with relatively bunodont cheek teeth that are characterized by reduction in cusp number. This taxon is the oldest record of an amphicyonid from south Asia and possibly for all of Asia. Despite its antiquity, it is derived in the development of brachygnathy and differs from other early amphicyonids that have shortened faces. Evidently brachygnathy was established in this species without loss of p1–2 or m2–3, which became single−rooted from a primitive double−rooted condition.

Opis:
The Middle Jurassic mammal Shuotherium has lower molars that possess a trigonid and talonid, but are unique in having the talonid situated in front of the trigonid, rather than behind it, as in molars of usual tribosphenic pattern. Shuotherium dongi Chow and Rich, 1982 was based on a dentary bearing seven teeth, originally interpreted as three premolars and four molars. Based on comparison with other groups of early mammals, we reinterpret the premolar–molar boundary in the holotype of S. dongi, and propose a dental formula of four (or more) premolars and three molars. The ultimate lower premolar (previously identified as the first molar) has a completely developed trigonid and no talonid or pseudo−talonid. We hypothesize that the mesial cingulid on molars of Australosphenida is a highly plausible structural antecedent to the pseudo−talonid of Shuotherium. This and other shared, derived features support a relationship of Shuotherium and Australosphenida as sister−taxa. We hypothesize that the common ancestor of Shuotherium + Australosphenida had a global distribution no younger than early Middle Jurassic, and that the respective clades diverged prior to full separation of Gondwanan and Laurasian landmasses.

Opis:
Drift Reduction Technologies (DRTs) are becoming increasingly important for improving spray applications in many countries including New Zealand (NZ). Although there is a growing database on the performance of DRTs, there is no rating system showing the effectiveness of the DRT’s performance. In Europe, DRTs are classified relative to current reference technologies as part of the rating systems used to establish spray drift risk reduction. We have recommended some key elements of such a comprehensive exposure risk reduction scheme for any country, based on prior and on-going research into the performance of specific DRTs in row, tree, and vine crops. Our intention was to create a rating system to determine the effectiveness of a given technology. This rating system would improve spray application practices and environmental stewardship for a wide range of crops and application scenarios.

Opis:
Mammalian diversity in North America shifted significantly during the Early Cretaceous, from archaic groups dominant in the well-sampled faunas of the Late Jurassic to advanced forms (including early members of modern clades) by the Albian–Cenomanian. However, the dynamics of this transition are poorly understood, since faunas of earliest Cretaceous age are unknown. Here we describe the first fossil mammals from exposures of the Lakota Formation in the Black Hills of South Dakota, a unit correlated with the upper Berriasian–lower Barremian and positioned stratigraphically between the underlying Morrison Formation and Aptian–Albian units exposed elsewhere in North America. The mammalian fauna from the Lakota Formation is transitional with regard to the North American fossil record, representing a broad spectrum of both Jurassic and Cretaceous lineages: present are “plagiaulacidan” multituberculates allied with Late Jurassic Allodontoidea and Early Cretaceous Plagiaulacoidea; the geologically youngest dryolestoid(s) and “triconodontine” triconodontids (characteristic Late Jurassic taxa from the Morrison Formation); the oldest spalacotheriid “symmetrodont”; the first record of an amphitheriid-like stem zatherian from North America (abundant in the Middle Jurassic–earliest Cretaceous of Europe); and the oldest North American tribosphenic mammal (abundant and diverse on the continent by the end of the Early Cretaceous). Taxa making their first North American appearance in the Lakota Formation (Plagiaulacoidea, including a genus also known from the Purbeck of Britain; Spalacotheriidae, stem Zatheria, Tribosphenida) are also known from the Early Cretaceous of Western Europe, suggesting the possibility that they represent immigrants.

Opis:
Soil erosion continues to be problematic financially and environmentally with the USEPA ranking sediment as one of the top ten pollutants of concern in the USA. One aspect of erosion often overlooked is the role of ephemeral gullies in terms of quantity of sediment produced and amount exported to nearby waterways. Current physically-based and empirical models are inadequate for predicting this type of erosion particularly at the watershed scale. A new methodology for predicting the quantity and location of sediment delivery was developed and tested via a case study. Aerial ephemeral gully erosion rates varied from 33.6 mton/km2 (0.15 U.S. tons/acre) in the Big Bear Creek basin to 88.4 mton/km2 (0.39 U.S. tons/acre) in the Middle Potlatch Creek basin representing 2.3 to 7.7% of the total surface sediment load. This information was used to develop a predictive Erosion Potential Index (EPI) that uses LANDSAT aerial imagery combined with readily available soils information and a digital elevation model to identify the most probably locations of ephemeral gully development. High resolution aerial imagery was used to quantify actual ephemeral gully locations which were then compared to the EPI predicted locations to verify the procedure. High resolution aerial imagery was also used to quantify the amounts of soil erosion from ephemeral gullies in basins of the Potlatch River system.
Uzyskane wyniki badań posłużyły do opracowania Indeksu Erozji Potencjalnej (EPI), do określenia którego wykorzystano obrazowania satelitarne LANDSAT w połączeniu z numerycznym modelem terenu oraz dostępnymi informacjami o glebach. W celu weryfikacji procedury wykorzystano zdjęcia lotnicze wysokiej rozdzielczości do określenia ilościowego lokalizacji wąwozów erozyjnych, a następnie porównano z wartościami EPI, wskazującymi przewidywane miejsca występowania wąwozów. Zdjęcia lotnicze wysokiej rozdzielczości wykorzystano również do oceny ilościowej wielkości erozji gleb spowodowanej erozją wąwozową w zlewni rzeki Potlatch.
