Opis:
Referat poświęcony jest omówieniu problemu zachowania (ang. preservation) i utrzymania (ang. maintenance) języka naturalnego jako ważnego wyzwania stojącego przed współ-czesną ludzkością. Zasygnalizowana jest konieczność za-chowania lingworóżnorodności w odniesieniu do wielu języ-ków naturalnych, które stoją przed niebezpieczeństwem bądź uśpienia bądź wręcz wyginięcia w kontekście szerszej per-spektywy zachowania bioróżnorodności na nośniku ziemskim. Podkreśla się, że ekologia wypracowała odpowiednią per-spektywę dla wprowadzania szeregu strategii w tym zakresie i że ekolingwistyka może w pełni i bezpośrednio skorzystać z wypracowanej przez ekologię formuły. Niektóre ze strategii zachowania języków naturalnych wraz ze świadczeniami ekolingwistycznymi omówiono w dozwolonym skrócie.
The article is concerned with the problem of natural lan-guage preservation and maintenance as an important chal-lenge of present-day humanity. It is shown that a big numer of living languages, referred to as ‘linguodiversity’, are facing either dormancy or extinction and are in need of preserva-tion just like the need to preserve ‘biodiversity’, or the exist-ing variability of life on Earth, is at present a major chal-lenge of humanity. It is argued that ecology has worked out a feasible framework for implementing a number of strate-gies to champion this task and that ecolinguistics may di-rectly benefit from the present shape of ecology and adapt these strategies to the task of the preservation of linguodi-versity. Some preservation strategies and ecolinguistic ser-vices, based on their ecological analogs, are briefly dis-cussed.

Opis:
On the basis of the existing and unquestioned linguistic stance, a division of all the living creatures inhabiting the Earth into those which do not have language (i.e. prehuman and languageless) and those who have language (i.e. the genus Homo sapiens) is postulated. The paper briefly discusses a rich diversity of communication modes occurring in the domain of the prehuman communication systems, such as the auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, electric, thermal, and seismic ones, with appropriate graphic illustrations. Furthermore, on the basis of the phenomenon of the observable shrinking of this diversity and the key position of the human species, it postulates the necessity of preserving this diversity in the context of biodiversity. This major postulate is in accord with the need to intensify attempts to preserve biodiversity as well as preserve the remaining diversity on the level of the prehuman communication systems as a major challenge of modern humanity. In this context, the human species is considered here as the species of the ‘overseers’ and ‘archivers’ of all the existing communication systems existing on the Earth as the carrier of the tree of life.

In this paper, the view is proposed that human culture appears fundamental in resolving the problem of ‘the human condition’. Its holistic nature comprises all tangible and intangible aspects, including artefacts, language and communication. It is the culture-language complex which is responsible for the generation of both collective and individual human identity via its locality expressed in a plethora of tangibleintangible manifestations. The regionalism of this complex ought to result in special care of both institutions and individuals who, by demonstrating active involvement on a local scale, are co-responsible for the maintenance of local cultural-linguistic identity. Its vitality is, in turn, more than significant for the maintenance of identity on a larger (e.g. national, global) scale. The aforementioned aspects of regionalism are discussed here on the basis of a review of the content of an encyclopedic outline of Kashubian culture (Bedeker) authored by Tadeusz Bolduan.

In the paper, an assumption is forwarded that if sound systems are brought to a contact setting, inter-entity distinctiveness is usually distorted. In the psycholinguistic sense of the word, it means that in the perception process, a particular sound of a less favoured system may be downgraded or even ridiculed. This generally places a given sound system in a weaker position sustainability-wise. It is assumed that the process may involve the presence and operation of the phenomenon of ethnic nepotism.

Bifurcational Model of Symbiosis (BiMoS)
Opis:
An assumption is made that applied linguistics may be viewed as an outcome of an interplay of a dichotomy of endogenous and exogenous symbionts, mediated by important mesogenous symbionts acting jointly within the domain of language and communication. All of them form a system of bifurcations which may generally be called ‘a flow tool-language design’ or The Bifurcational Model of Symbiosis (BiMoS). In this model, bifurcations form a ‘grammar of bifurcations’ whose power is symbiotic in the overall functioning of language. Furthermore, the occurrence of the above mentioned types of symbionts on the language side allows for a division of ‘linguolabourese’ (or the whole ‘life of language’ as opposed to ‘instrumentolabourese’, or the whole ‘life of tools’) into three more or less distinct and interconnected areas of symbiosis: the exogenous area, the mesogenous area, and the endogenous area, respectively. The afore mentioned areas further justify a division of linguistics into three respective types: exogenous (exo-) linguistics, mesogenous (meso-) linguistics, and endogenous (endo-) linguistics. Their subdomains of interest vary but are highly interconnected, blended and synergistic. Applied linguistics is viewed here as belonging predominantly to (or taking theoretical and practical interest in) the mesogenous and endogenous areas of linguolabourese, though it is strongly supported by the underlying exogenous area.

In the paper, the author postulates that philology may be characterized by an evolutionary sequence: from classical philology, to modern native and nonnative types of philologies, to the expected panphilology. The portals perspective applied in the paper has allowed the author to investigate all four evolutionary phases with special emphasis on the latest phase of the proposed evolutionary sequence. Panphilology has been described in greater detail as characterized by such features as an open and eclectic type of studies, cosmopolitanism and students' freedom in selecting their highly individual paths of studies.

All living natural languages may be characterized in terms of their overall ‘robustness’. The concept may be defined as relating directly to the health/vitality /wellbeing (i.e. sustainability) of these languages. The present essay expresses the view that a human communicating agentwho performs orally in the public space must be properly communicatively aligned and properly licensed in order to achieve communicative success. Communicative alignment and communicative licensing are manifestations of the principle of communicative alignment and the principle of communicative licensing, respectively. The two principles are assumed to act synergistically in both successful and unsuccessful communicative practices.

The earth forms a gigantic sound theatre. The sound arena, as we may also call it, has been formed in a number of phases. They include the following: the phase of the formation of the natural sound arena (geophony), the formation of the bio sound arena (biophony/zoophony), the phase of the formation of the human sound arena (anthropophony), the phase of the formation of machine-produced sound arena (technophony). All of them are merged into the Earth’s soundscape. In ecological terms, technophony should be kept at a minimum if the Earth’s overall wellbeing is to be considered seriously.
