    The paper reflects on the concept of culture from the perspective of those who’ve experienced the cataclysms of the 20th and 21st centuries. The author poses questions about the current experience of the pandemic to verify the “usefulness” of the dominant cultural patterns. The author analyses the particular war experiences of Czesław Miłosz in Warsaw (Legends of Modernity) and Józef Czapski in a prisoner-of-war camp (Proust in Griazowiec). At the center of their traumatic experience is the process of seeking salvation through cultural gestures. The experience of war reveals both the strength and weakness of the fundamental version of culture. The article ends with a question aboutthe topicality of this experience and the upholding power of modern culture.

    The article is a comparative analysis of the modernist aesthetics of creation. It describes how Rilke and Georg Simmel discovered August Rodin’s rules of modern perception, sensitivity and creative imagination. In the work of both writers we see them striving to interpret works of art as a creative process that is the effect of their astute diagnosis of contemporary culture. A new approach to aisthesis restores value to aesthetic experience and opens up broader learning opportunities.

    The aim of this article is to try to establish the place of Stanisław Wyspiański in the landscape of early Polish modernism. The methodological foundation is the anthropological aesthetics of literature. Analysis of the literary and plastic work as well as of the artist's remarks and observations dispersed in his letters and essays is the material for the construction of Wyspiański's conception of art. The starting point is the artist's existential experience, which assumes the form of atopy, experiencing of strangeness of that which is close. This experience becomes the subject of a literary transposition which is visible in many dramas: Wesele, Sędziowie, Wyzwolenie, Noc Listopadowa.Its analogon is a dual aesthetic attitude which the artist assumes: an attitude of participation and an attitude of separation funding art which is based on panaestheticism or breaking of communication. In historical perspective the principle of artistic totality ("a play with fulness") and a tendency to degradation ("a play with emptiness") may be interpreted as a case of suspension between aesthetics of the 19th century and of the 20th century. Looking from the Polish angle, I propose to place Wyspiański in close vicinity of Stanisław Witkiewicz and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz together with whom he would be creating a significant line of evolution of Polish modernity.

    The article undertakes to prove that Ian McEwan is an ambitious and versatile writer who is not afraid of experimenting with forms which are on the borderline of literature and other arts. It presents McEwan as a literary artist having a wide professional knowledge of music. The analysis focuses on McEwan’s opera libretto For You which is a problematic work for any literary analysis as, being a multimedia narrative text type, it stands on the borderland between literature and music. The article analyses the interdependence of these two spheres considering the libretto as a complex artistic text – which refers to music at various interpretation levels: the language, style, plot and construction – and sheds new light on the narrative complexities of the text/music interaction.

    The article is an attempt to settle a matter of what art demands from the artist and whether the artist has a right to sacrifice others for the sake of their work. It discusses the escapist attitude to life of the artists who are characters of Ian McEwan’s three novels. Amsterdam, On Chesil Beach and, to a lesser extent, Atonement present this particular art-artist relation. The article also demonstrates McEwan’s accomplished use of auditory images as well as musicology terms as character and atmosphere-building elements which make the narration harmonise with the narrative.
    Artykuł jest próbą ustalenia, czego sztuka wymaga od artysty oraz czy artysta ma prawo poświęcić innych dla dobra swojego dzieła. Autorka rozważa w nim eskapistyczny stosunek do życia artystów – bohaterów trzech powieści Iana McEwana. Amsterdam, Na Plaży Chesil oraz, w mniejszym stopniu, Pokuta prezentują tę szczególną relację sztuka – artysta. W artykule ukazano także mistrzowskie posługiwanie się McEwana obrazami dźwiękowymi, jak również terminologią z zakresu muzykologii, jako elementami budującymi postaci i tworzącymi atmosferę, co sprawia, że narracja harmonizuje z fabułą powieści.
