The paper presents an outline of the reception of Popper's thought in Poland in the period between two World Wars. The most important paper in this period is doubtlessly the one published by Zygmunt Spira entitled 'Remarks on Popper's methodology and epistemology'. Spira was a student of Z. Zawirski. He lived and worked in Cracow, and was killed during the Nazi occupation. His paper is by now forgotten. We critically present his main ideas, showing his innovatory style of thinking.

In this paper the importance of the history of the philosophy of nature for this field of philosophy is examined. It is also shown why the history of philosophy in science (philosophy of nature) is important for Polish philosophy. Next, some selected issues of the historiography of this field are examined. It is suggested, that an interesting perspective of investigations is the one, which shows the development of the Polish philosophy of nature from the point of view of the development of philosophical reflections on the issue of time in the period 1900–1939.
W artykule poddano analizie znaczenie filozoficznej refleksji nad dziejami filozofii przyrody dla rozwoju współczesnej filozofii przyrody. Wskazuje się również, dlaczego historia filozofii przyrody jest ważna dla polskiej filozofii. Następnie analizom poddano wybrane zagadnienia związane z historiografią dziejów filozofii przyrody. Zaproponowano również interesującą perspektywę badań, jaką jest ujęcie dziejów polskiej filozofii przyrody w latach 1900–1939 z punktu wiedzenia rozważań nad zagadnieniem czasu.

This review article discusses Andrzej Bielecki’s book Models of Neurons and Perceptrons: Selected Problems and Challenges, as published by Springer International Publishing. This work exemplifies “philosophy in science” by adopting a broad, multidisciplinary perspective for the issues related to the simulation of neurons and neural networks, and the author has addressed many of the important philosophical assumptions that are entangled in this area of modeling. Bielecki also raises several important methodological issues about modeling. This book is recommended for any philosophers who wish to learn more about the current state of neural modeling and find inspiration for a deeper philosophical reflection on the subject.

Marian Smoluchowski (1872–1917) was an outstanding Polish physicist, known e.g. as a pioneer of statistical physics. His short paper about history of physics in Poland represents the initial study in this field. It was cited many times, creating the starting point for the historiography of physics in Poland. However, the role of history of science played in Smoluchowski’s activities was never systematically analyzed before. This article concentrates on three main domains of Smoluchowski’s activities involved with history of science: scientific, didactic and philosophical. It reveals that for Smoluchowski the importance of history of science was determined by its cultural impact. History of science played the important role in crystallization of his philosophical concepts, as well as in didactics revealing the internal dynamics of science and inspiring to new discoveries. The last issue is tied with specific methodological approach to physics called by Smoluchowski ‘romanticism of science’. This paper shows that Smoluchowski was not only a pioneer of history of physics in Poland, but also prepared some foundations for future development of this field of research.
Marian Smoluchowski (1872–1917) był wybitnym polskim fizykiem, znanym m.in. jako pionier fizyki statystycznej. Jego krótka praca o historii fizyki w Polsce stanowi pionierskie opracowanie tego zagadnienia, była cytowana wiele razy, tworząc punkt wyjścia do dalszych badań nad historią fizyki w Polsce. Należy jednakże podkreślić, że nigdy nie poddano systematycznej analizie zagadnienia roli historii nauki w działalności naukowej Smoluchowskiego. W niniejszej pracy skupiono się na trzech obszarach działalności związanych z historią nauki: badawczym, dydaktycznym i filozoficznym. Wskazano, że doniosłość historii nauki dla Smoluchowskiego brała się z jej kulturowego znaczenia. Historia nauki odegrała ważną rolę w procesie krystalizacji koncepcji filozoficznych wybitnego fizyka, a także w dydaktyce fizyki, ukazując wewnętrzną dynamikę rozwoju nauki i inspirując do nowych odkryć. To ostatnie zagadnienie jest ściśle związane ze specyficznym podejściem metodologicznym Smoluchowskiego do fizyki, nazwanym przez niego „romantyzmem nauki”. W artykule wskazano nie tylko, że Smoluchowski jest pionierem historii fizyki w Polsce, ale też że przygotował podstawy dla przyszłego rozwoju tej dyscypliny.

In this paper, we examine the meta-ontology of AI systems with human-level intelligence, with us denoting such AI systems as AIE. Meta-ontology in philosophy is a discourse centered on ontology, ontological commitment, and the truth condition of ontological theories. We therefore discuss how meta-ontology is conceptualized for AIE systems. We posit that the meta-ontology of AIE systems is not concerned with computational representations of reality in the form of structures, data constructs, or computational concepts, while the ontological commitment of AIE systems is directed toward what exists in the outside world. Furthermore, the truth condition of the ontology (which is meta-ontological assumption) of AIE systems does not require consistency with closed conceptual schema or ontological theories but rather with reality, or in other words, “what is the world” (Smith, 2019, p.57). In addition, the truth condition of AIE systems is verified through operational success rather than by coherence with theories. This work builds on ontological postulates about AI systems that were formulated by Brian Cantwell Smith (2019).

Iatrogenic embolisation of the right ventricle of the heart by a fragment of one of the most basic ICU devices, which has fractured and detached the central vein catheter, is rarely described in subject literature. Removing such an element from the heart is highly risky and requires the use of very modern techniques and equipment. The Atrieve Vascular Snare™ was employed in the described patient. Therefore, it is necessary to present this process and its effectiveness through an evaluation of the health related quality of life (HRQoL) associated with the perception of health status by those patients. This is a requirement in modern medicine. The main aim of this paper was to evaluate the HRQoL after this embolisation. A 67-year-old patient was referred to the Vascular Surgery Department with Endovascular Interventions Ward, John Paul II Hospital in Kraków, after the defragmenting of the central vein catheter and replacement to the right ventricle of the heart. An endovascular approach through the right common femoral vein (RCFV) under local anesthesia of the groin was chosen as the preferred method for removing the broken catheter fragment. The right ventricle of the heart was reached using a 18-30mm Atrieve Vascular Snare™. A structure consisting of three loops facilitated the quick grasp and removal of the catheter fragment at the first attempt through the RCFV. Despite the short time needed for the procedure, the patient experienced periprocedural ventricular fibrillation (VF) with the necessity of defibrillation. After one successful defibrillation attempt, sinus rhythm was restored. The post-operative course showed no complications whatsoever, and the patient was sent to the General Surgery Ward in order for a new Hickman catheter to be implemented and further parenteral nutrition treatment to be carried out. The endovascular technique with the use of Atrieve Vascular Snare™ is an effective method which was used in the case of our patient under local anesthesia. It provides for the fast, safe and convenient removal of a disrupted and dislocated catheter fragment. It allows one to improve the patient’s HRQoL not only in the short term, but also in the longitudinal (6 months after surgery) follow up.

The paper presents the principle of operation of a new night-shooting target. Because this target requires a covering that reflects the infrared radiation flux generated by the reflector from its surface, testing of different variants of the cover and the shape of the target surface has been carried out. Emissivity is a physical parameter characterizing the radiant properties of real bodies. The emissivity coefficient of extruded aluminum sheet samples covered with a layer of green colored aluminum oxide was determined. The aluminum oxide layer was applied using two different technologies being galvanic and anodizing.

Leon Chwistek (1884-1944) was a Professor of Mathematical Logic at the Lviv University, but also philosopher, theoretician of modern art and avant-garde painter. The present article deals with the reception of Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity (SR) according to Leon Chwistek. Firstly, Chwistek’s life and philosophical views are presented. Particular attention is paid to the following issues: the theory of the multiplicity of realities, the problem of idealism in the context of philosophy of mathematics and philosophy of science, and also positivist background of Chwistek’s philosophy. Secondly, the reception of the theory of relativity according to Chwistek is presented in detail. In order to explain this problem, the following steps are taken: Chwistek’s books and articles are presented. The charge of idealism against Albert Einstein’s and Hermann Minkowski’s theories, as well as alterations to special theory of relativity proposed by Chwistek are reported and analyzed. Finally, Chwistek’s mistakes are pointed out and recapitulated.

In this paper we discuss the idea of theology of science, which is understood as a new branch of the- ology concerned with the problems arising in the context of natural sciences. Theology of science has been developed since 1980s. The authors of this concept are Michał Heller and Józef Życiński – philosophers involved in discussions between science and religion, who tried to find a new common area to develop this dialogue. The aim of the paper is to present the concept of theology of science in the historical and problematic perspective, taking into account the various challenges and research perspectives faced by this concept.
