Pod wpływem zmian społeczno-gospodarczych uniwersytety w coraz mniejszym stopniu działają jak wspólnoty uczonych, a w coraz większym jak aktorzy organizacyjni, których charakteryzuje przede wszystkim rozliczalność z efektów zaplanowanych działań i wpisana w to walka o pozycję i prestiż. W kierunku transformacji uniwersytetów w racjonalną organizację zmierzają również reformy szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce. Wymagają one zwiększenia jakości prowadzonych badań, mierzonej publikacjami w czasopismach indeksowanych przez międzynarodowe bazy periodyków naukowych, wymuszają konkurencję, na przykład poprzez wprowadzenie konkursu na wyłonienie tzw. uczelni badawczych. Dla akademików oznacza to zmianę akcentów w ocenie pracy naukowej: normy środowiskowe zastępowane są formalnymi regulacjami o charakterze audytu. Celem artykułu jest, ugruntowana w badaniach empirycznych, odpowiedź na pytanie o to, jak odbierane są zachodzące zmiany. Materiał empiryczny zbierany był w toku badania jakościowego (17 indywidualnych wywiadów pogłębionych). Respondentami byli ponadprzeciętnie aktywni badacze regularnie pozyskujący granty na badania naukowe ze środków zewnętrznych, czyli osoby, na których coraz częściej koncentruje się polityka kadrowa uniwersytetu jako organizacji. Wyniki badania pokazują, że transformacja uniwersytetu w aktora organizacyjnego oznacza, że jest on postrzegany przede wszystkim jako pracodawca. W tej perspektywie rozliczalność jest dwustronna: uniwersytet egzekwuje efekty od pracowników, ale pracownicy oczekują od pracodawcy organizacyjnych i kulturowych ram do ich osiągania.
Due to socio-economic changes, universities are increasingly becoming organizational actors instead of a community of scholars. They tend to be evaluated on the basis of the results of their planned activities, which leads to a battle for position and prestige and prestige. Higher education reforms in Poland are going to contribute to the transformation of universities into organizations. The reforms put pressure on the quality of research measured by publications in journals indexed by international databases of scientific periodicals, forcing universities to compete in order to be categorized as research universities. For researchers, this means a change of criteria in the assessment of scientific work: peer reviews are replaced by audit-like procedures that are formally regulated. This paper aims to analyse the extent to which the reformed university model corresponds to the beliefs and behaviours of those who operate in these new organizational conditions. The basis for the analysis was a qualitative study (17 individual in-depth interviews) conducted with people who currently play a central role in the staff policy of the university considered as an organization – outstanding active researchers obtaining grants from external funds. The results of the study show that the transformation of a university into an organizational actor means that the university is primarily seen as an employer. In this perspective, accountability is reciprocal: the university exacts/ requires results from employees, but employees expect the employer to have an organizational and cultural framework for achieving them.

The goal of this article is to discuss dynamics hindering women's career in managerial roles of Polish comprehensive universities. Although female academics outnumber their male peers, they remain underrepresented in the management at universities. In the last 30 years, only 2 women held a position of rector. In this article, we analyse the reasons for this phenomenon on the basis of qualitative research performed with the use of individual in-depth interviews, preceded by the analysis of career advancement of individual women. The research has been carried out on a group of 15 women, which currently occupy position of vice-rector or have had position of rector in the past. The results of the analysis show that occupying a position of vice-rector is a key factor determining the chance to obtain a position of rector. This stage of the career helps to consolidate the chosen professional role in the organisation (3 main roles were recognised: expert, researcher and activist). Depending on the type, these roles give greater or lesser opportunities for self-identification in the position of a leader, for adapting to collegial culture of university and as a consequence becoming a rector.

At the basis of “Questions of Boundaries Research Group”, carrying out its activity since November 2006 as an interdepartmental unit of Adam Mickiewicz University, lays the idea of discussion. In this discussion, or rather a coincidence of discussions, due to its dialogic formula, a distinctive question came through, and we decided to put it in the first information about this idea (and also, from the very beginning, at the website: www.graniczne.amu.edu.pl) as its specific, constitutional preamble: ”Is it possible to create a platform for joint questions, talks, lectures and discussions dealing with basic issues, such as image of the world and our own place in it – for people who do not have and do not need to have one shared point of view”. Our starting point is the consciousness of a growing difficulty towards the aim of comprehending the world we experience as a whole. We find ourselves at the point at which simultaneously: - almost all possibilities of a modern scientific research are disclosed (especially technological possibilities), along with their hardly predictable consequences for a human being; – the possibility of a deeper basic understanding of the way the world – and our own life – are given to us, is sparkling through, providing a chance that we will achieve an inventive attitude towards those realities in our civilization which appear to be dangerous or spoiled; – there prevails a difficulty with the underlying intention of any science – to describe the world as a whole. Nevertheless, the desire to perceive the world as a whole has not vanished. It is present even when there comes along a certain skepsis as to the probability of satisfying this desire. We cannot excuse ourselves from attempting to answer the question why is it so. We also should not resign from trying to express this desire. We should realize that, although a common reaction to discomfort  is trying to remove it, namely to harmonize a disrupted view of reality as quickly as possible, it is by no means the only possible solution. It is rather immediate and temporary and, for some fundamental processes of problem solving (investigative as well as existential), it may have a restraining effect. Above all, it means closing to the “unexpected” which has a potential of possibilities in itself. Perhaps that is why, instead of quickly reducing and eliminating inconvenient situations, it is worth “to condensate” them on purpose. In the academic year 2007/2008 Questions of Boundaries Research Group has offered students and PhD’s about a dozen of classes per each semester (http://www.graniczne.amu.edu.pl/ PPG Wiki/Wiki.jsp?page =20072008). Most prominent among them are the series of interdisciplinary lectures: “Xenophobia, Racism and Exclusion (because of Race, Sex and Age)” and “Boundaries of Humanity: Between Human and Animal World” along with “Boundaries of Humanity: Between the World of Human and the World of Machines” – these are delivered by the representatives of many varying disciplines. This year’s research priorities consist of two projects: “Redefinition of the Fundamental Terms of Humanism in the Light of Holocaust” and “Spaces of Community”. Lectures, seminars and classes of Research Group have raised wide interest and, among our other intentions, they begin to play an important role in creating a meeting space for students and PhD’s of various faculties and specialties.

Opis:
The effect of light irradiance on the amount of ATP synthase α-subunit in mesophyll (M) and bundle sheath (BS) chloroplasts of C4 species such as maize (Zea mays L., type NADP-ME), millet (Panicum miliaceum, type NAD-ME) and guinea grass (Panicum maximum, type PEP-CK) was investigated in plants grown under high, moderate and low light intensities equal to 800, 350 and 50 µmol photons m-2 s-1, respectively. The results demonstrate that α-subunit of ATP synthase in both M and BS chloroplasts is altered by light intensity, but differently in the investigated species. Moreover, we identified two isoforms of the CF1 α-subunit, called α and ά. The CF1 α-subunit was the major isoform and was present in all light conditions, whereas ά was the minor isoform in low light. A strong increase in the level of the ά-subunit in maize mesophyll and bundle sheath thylakoids was observed after 50 h of high light treatment. The α and ά-subunits from investigated C4 species displayed apparent molecular masses of 64 and 67 kDa, respectively, on SDS/PAGE. The presence of the ά-subunit of ATPase was confirmed in isolated CF1 complex, where it was recognized by antisera to the α-subunit. The N-terminal sequence of ά-subunit is nearly identical to that of α. Our results indicate that both isoforms coexist in M and BS chloroplasts during plant growth at all irradiances. We suggest the existence in M and BS chloroplasts of C4 plants of a mechanism(s) regulating the ATPase composition in response to light irradiance. Accumulation of the ά isoform may have a protective role under high light stress against over protonation of the thylakoid lumen and photooxidative damage of PSII.
