Opis:
Coal samples carbonized at 600°C and TEMPO probes we applied in oximetry. EPR spectra of medium-ranked coal carbonized at 400, 500, and 700 °C were not sensitive to oxygen. Oxygen effects during photodynamic therapy of tumor cells were tested. Oximetric probes were used to examination of singlet oxygen O2 formation in melanotic CRL-1424 tumor cells irradiated by laser (500 mW, Λ = 662 nm) at the presence of photolon as the photosensitizer. Tumor cells were irradiated during 7, 15, and 30 minutes. Changes in EPR spectra of coal probe and TEMPO after excitation of oxygen O2 from triplet ground state (S=1) to diamagnetic singlet (S=0) state were analysed. Measurements of EPR spectra of coal carbonized at 60O°C and TEMPO in: control cell culture, irradiated cells, and cells irradiated at the presence of photolon, were done. After PDT intensity of EPR lines of the used oximetric probes considerably increases. It was proved that the strongest formation of singlet oxygen in the studied cells appears after 15 minutes of laser irradiation.

A clinical and an epidemiological analysis was presented of a trichinellosis focus from Wielkopolska region. The studies included 20 persons and trichinellosis was diagnosed in 15 cases. The focus was characterized by asynchronous invasion with Trichinella sp. in individual affected persons in the course of a prolonged period (around 2.5 months) and by reporting of the patients to the Clinic during approximately 30 to 90 days after the disease signs/symptoms developed. Retrospective analysis and a set of specialized tests permitted to clarify causes of persisting complaints, presented by the patients, as well as to establish the diagnosis at late stages of trichinellosis.

Opis:
EPR examination of cellulose carbonized at 400ºC and 600ºC has been performed. The aim of this work was to search a sample useful as the oximetric probe in biology and medicine. The higher paramagnetic centers concentration characterizes cellulose carbonized at 600ºC, which was found as the sensitive oximetric probe. Quasi-chemical bonds between cellulose molecules and paramagnetic O$\text{}_{2}$ molecules decrease paramagnetic centers concentration. A linear increase in paramagnetic centers concentration and a linear decrease in EPR linewidth with increasing time of sample evacuation were observed for cellulose carbonized at 600ºC. Oxygen affects spin-lattice interactions in carbonized cellulose.

Opis:
Ionizing radiation induces a variety of DNA lesions, including single and double strand breaks. Large energy deposition precisely localized along the ion track that occurs in the case of heavy ion irradiation can lead to complex types of DNA double strand breaks in exposed biological material. The formation of nuclear double strand breaks triggers phosphorylation of histone H2AX, which can be microscopically visualized as foci in the γ-H2AX assay. Studies with a carbon ion beam are being carried out at the Heavy Ion Laboratory of the University of Warsaw. The γ-H2AX assay as a method of measuring the biological response of cells irradiated with $\text{}^{12}C$ ions as well as the frequency cluster size distributions obtained in the nanodosimetry experiment at HIL will be presented.

Opis:
Traditional forest management as coppicing and coppicing-with-standard are recently considered as beneficial for biodiversity in woodlands. Cessation of coppicing leads to changes in stand structure and often loss of biodiversity. In contemporary Polish forestry coppicing is not applied, however some stands of coppice origin persist in Silesia until present. The overgrown coppice oak forests that cover the southern slopes at the foothills of the Sudetes Mountains (Silesia, Central Europe) are considered to be Euro-Siberian steppic woods with a Quercus sp. habitat (91I0): a priority habitat in the European Union, according to the Natura 2000 system. They support one of the largest populations of wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis Crantz) in Poland. In this study we investigated the relation of stand structure and trees parameters with environmental variables. The results showed considerable variability of stand volume, tree density and stems’ size correlated mostly with soil texture, but not nutrient content. We attributed it to soil dryness which seems to be the crucial factor controlling growth of trees. The natural regeneration of trees concentrated mostly on non-exposed sites on less acidic soils, but seedlings of wild service tree were present almost exclusively on most insolated sites, with shallow acidic soils. However, the regeneration of trees in sapling stage was restrained by browsing. Results suggest that maintaining of Sorbus torminalis requires protection against browsing, and some kind of active management is necessary to retain the observed stand structure with high proportion of wild service trees in stands on more fertile soils.

EPR spectra of lignite"Mequinenza" (Spain) (62.3 wt% C) and Polish orthocoking coal (87.8 wt% C) were compared. The spectra were superpositions of broad Gaussian, broad Lorentzian 1, and narrow Lorentzian 3 lines. Concentration of paramagnetic centers - mainly delocalizedπ electrons - responsible for narrow Lorentzian 3 lines increases with increase in carbon content in coal. Coal units with slow and fast spin-lattice relaxation processes exist in the two studied samples. Slow spin-lattice interactions occur in simple aromatic coal units with broad Gaussian and Lorentzian 1 lines. Fast spin-lattice relaxation processes are characteristic of large aromatic units with narrow Lorentzian 3 lines.

Opis:
The paper presents results of a study on obtaining N-enriched active carbons from Polish brown coal and on their use as adsorbents for removal of pollution from gas phase. The crushed precursor was subjected to carbonisation at 500, 600 and 700°C in argon atmosphere. The chars obtained were activated by KOH at 800°C. The active carbons were further subjected to the ammoxidation at 350°C for 3 h, by a mixture of ammonia and air at the ratio of 1:3. The final products were microporous active carbons of well-developed surface area reaching to 2849 $m^2$/g and pore volume to 1.49 $cm^3$/g, showing mixed acid-base character of the surface. The results have shown that a suitable choice of the carbonisation, activation and ammoxidation procedures for brown coal can lead to obtaining activated carbons with high nitrogen dioxide adsorption ability, reaching from 16.9 to 36.4 mg $NO_2$/g.
