Opis:
There is the educational color layer for CT2TEE, an online transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) simulator accessible at www.ct2tee.agh.edu.pl in the current paper presented. TEE is nowadays one of the most important diagnostic tools in cardiology. Because of the semi-invasive nature of this examination and complexity of heart structure the training process of learning TEE can be long and difficult, especially in patients with congenital heart disease. Therefore CT2TEE is constructed, the first online TEE simulator, described in detail in the previous publication. This paper contains an overview on echocardiographic simulators and the previously constructed CT2TEE simulator. A detailed description of the construction and operating principles of the Educational Color Layer (ECL), an additional feature of the CT2TEE simulator, is provided. ECL, being a color information storing and indexing platform, enables to mark various 3D heart structures and facilitates the process of learning TEE.

Opis:
This paper is concerned with optimizing code execution in virtual machine environments. Code motion is one of the many optimization techniques. We considered a special case of optimization – a loop containing expressions that can be effectively evaluated once. A solution for this case is discussed and two algorithms are proposed. Experimental results for Java VM, MS .NET and Mono are shown here in order to assess the performance of the proposed algorithms.

Opis:
The minimization of the total completion time for asynchronous transmission in distributed systems is discussed. Attention is focused on the problem of message scheduling on part of the sender. Messages to be sent form a queue, and the order in which they are to be sent has to be first established. The methods of scheduling messages, which minimize the factor of the total completion time, are presented herein. The message-scheduling problem becomes considerably complicated when the stream of data transmitted between the sender and the receiver is organized into packets. A scheduling rule, according to which the shortest messages (SPT-Shortest Processing Time) are selected as the first to be sent, has been proven to be appropriate for the proposed model. A heuristic algorithm for scheduling messages with real-time constraints is proposed. The performance of the scheduling algorithm is experimentally evaluated. The results of the study show the possibility of improving the total completion time from a few to ten percent, depending on the characteristics of the sender. Thus, the practicability of the method has been proved.

Cell number, density and volume of white and gray matter in brain structures are not constant values. Cellular alterations in brain areas might coincide with neurological and psychiatric pathologies as well as with changes in brain functionality during selection experiments, pharmacological treatment or aging. Several softwares were created to facilitate quantitative analysis of brain tissues, however results obtained from these softwares require multiple manual settings making the computing process complex and time-consuming. This study attempts to establish half automated software for fast, ergonomic and an accurate analysis of cellular density, cell number and cellular surface in morphologically different brain areas: cerebral cortex, pond and cerebellum. Images of brain sections of bank voles stained with standard cresyl-violet technique (Nissl staining), were analyzed in designed software. Results were compared with other commercially available tools regarding number of steps to be done by user and number of parameters possible to measure.

Opis:
In this paper, the minimization of total weighted completion time (total cost) for asynchronous transmission in distributed systems is discussed. Special attention has been paid to the problem of message scheduling on the sender side. Messages to be sent form a queue, therefore the order in which they are to be sent has to be set. Scheduling algorithms can be chosen to optimize scheduling criteria such as total completion time or total weighted completion time. The message scheduling problem becomes complicated considerably when the transmitted data stream between the sender and the receiver is formed into packets. TheWSPT (Weighted Shortest Processing Time) scheduling rule, which orders messages according to non-decreasing length and weight ratios has been proven to be non-optimal. It has been demonstrated that the problem of minimizing the total weighted completion time is NP-hard. Here, we propose heuristic algorithms for scheduling messages and experimentally evaluate the performance of these scheduling algorithms.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present a possibility to use information technology in the form of databases for processing and analyzing large image sets based on methods of image analysis and mathematical morphology. Up to now the use of databases in the image analysis process has been reduced to storing large amounts of data in the form of images. However, all transformations and analyses of such sets are made on user’s computers. This requires a large data set (images) to be sent by network each time, and also it may possess the problems resulting from managing such large amounts of analyzed photographs on a computer. The proposed approach completely eliminates these problems by moving all transformations of image analysis to a database platform. For this purpose a set of routines realizing transformations of the image analysis and mathematical morphology was developed. The proposed approach allows the unification of the image processing and analysis area and advanced statistical analyses of obtained parameters describing geometrical sizes of objects on photographs. The proposed methodology was illustrated by practical realization of two measurement types for a simple structure of copper concentrate and more complicated, from the point of view of image analysis, structures such as dolomites from Redziny and Laskowa Gora and sandstones from Tumlin and Wisniowka.

In this paper the quality and analysis of the computed tomography scan sets are presented in the context of creating a 3DD model of a heart for the ultrasonography simulator. Data was collected during regular patients examination, using various equipment and technique, therefore not every set has required quality. CT data can be fast characterized with histogram that can show if the brightness ranges of objects (heart structures) are selective. This makes CT data usable for simulation by applying a transform function on the CT images to produce ultrasonographylike images. The aim is to use a PACS system of Hospital, which is the source of data. Therefore a proper technique and system for analysis is needed.

Opis:
The number and shape of cells in endothelium layer is highly correlated with the quality of vision. Therefore, its precise and automatic description plays an important role in medicine. This work presents several aspects of image processing of endothelium layer acquired by specular microscope. The comparison of cell selection accuracy is discussed using two different approaches to solve this problem: convolution filtering methods, and snake-based method. Moreover, for verification results generated by dedicated software, supplied with the microscope, were utilized. Next, the precise segmentation method is applied to improve the segmentation. The results are inspected visually, but also CV, H, and CVSL parameters, used in medicine, are calculated. The research concludes that general visual outcomes achieved by all segmentation approaches give similar results, however deep insight into cell outline position reveals some differences, which were partially removed after precise segmentation application. The analysis of parameter values show high stability of CV and CVSL parameters.
