    The present foreword refers to the address delivered by J.M. Coetzee on the occasion of conferring upon him by the University of Silesia the doctor honoris causa degree. Particular attention is paid to his thoughts on the role of English in the world of today. The author of the foreword shows that reflection on language in general and its role in moulding one’s identity in present in the Nobel laureate’s works, including his most recent novels. Further into the foreword, the author briefly discusses text reprinted in Śląskie Studia Polonistyczne: the already mentioned address by J.M. Coetzee, the conversation with the Author, and an article devoted to his works written by Robert Kusek.

    In his work The Wretched of the Earth, Frantz Fanon famously states that the most important task of African politicians and intellectuals is to understand the nature of the social and political transformations taking place in their countries. This task was undertaken by Nadine Gordimer in her sixty-five-year writing career, from the publication of her first collection of short stories in 1949 until her death in 2014. Gordimer helped her readers understand the situation in South Africa and anticipated many of the country’s social and political problems. In her novel A Guest of Honour, published in 1970, while her country was still struggling against apartheid, she painted the scenario of an unnamed African country which has succeeded in throwing off colonial rule. The socio-political issues she examines in this novel, such as the corruption of its leaders, poor schooling of the blacks and the problem of violence, proved to be the main challenges of contemporary South Africa. It is interesting to juxtapose the problems anticipated by Gordimer in the previous century and those facing South Africa today; such a comparative study, proposed in this article, is primarily a social analysis of a country which reached independence only twenty years ago and remains “deformed by its history,” as Gordimer pointed out in one of her interviews. This article is based on a detailed analysis of A Guest of Honour, primarily with a view to highlight the social and political issues described by Gordimer. The comparative aspect of this study is ensured by references to Gordimer’s most recent essays, interviews, and to her last novel, No Time Like the Present, published in 2012. Due to the fact that in writing A Guest of Honour Gordimer was influenced by Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth, this article is also an investigation of Fanon’s seminal study about the anticolonial movement.
    W swoim najważniejszym dziele, „Wyklęty lud ziemi”, Frantz Fanon stwierdza, że najważniejszym zadaniem afrykańskich polityków i intelektualistów jest rozumienie istoty przemian zachodzących w ich krajach. To przekonanie może posłużyć jako myśl przewodnia twórczości Nadine Gordimer. W swojej liczącej sześćdziesiąt pięć lat karierze pisarskiej autorka „Zachować swój świat” (The Conservationist) pomagała swoim czytelnikom zrozumieć istotę społecznych i politycznych przemian w jej rodzimej Południowej Afryce. W kilku powieściach trafnie przewidziała problemy, z którymi przyjdzie zmierzyć się jej krajowi po wprowadzeniu demokracji. W powieści „Gość honorowy” (A Guest of Honour), wydanej w 1970 roku, przedstawiła wydarzenia rozgrywające się w fikcyjnym afrykańskim kraju, który odzyskał niepodległość po okresie niewoli kolonialnej. Analiza problemów społecznych i politycznych przeprowadzona przez Gordimer w tej powieści ma odniesienie do aktualnych problemów w Południowej Afryce, takich jak skorumpowanie władz, niski poziom edukacji uboższych warstw społecznych oraz ważny w tym kraju problem przemocy. Celem artykułu jest analiza powieści „Gość honorowy” oraz porównanie przedstawionego w niej obrazu państwa i społeczeństwa z rzeczywistością współczesnej Południowej Afryki. W analizie powieści ważnym odniesieniem będzie wspomniane dzieło Frantza Fanona, natomiast w opisie problemów współczesnej Południowej Afryki istotne będą odwołania do esejów Gordimer, wywiadów oraz jej ostatniej powieści No Time Like the Present wydanej w 2012 roku.

    The aim of the article is to analyse a selection of literary works by Colm Tóibín and Anne Enright from the perspective of modernist and postmodernist theories about memory and identity. It is argued that Tóibín’s and Enright’s works are characterised by a typically postmodern approach towards memory: their narrators are both acutely aware of the significance of memory in the creation of their identity, and of its limitations. This paradoxical approach towards the question of memory, which stresses its importance as well as its fallibility, is of central importance in this article.
    Celem artykułu jest analiza wybranych dzieł literackich Colma Tóibína oraz Anne Enright z perspektywy modernistycznych i postmodernistycznych teorii pamięci i tożsamości. Dzieła Colma Tóibína oraz Anne Enright charakteryzują się typowo postmodernistycznym podejściem do pamięci: ich narratorzy są boleśnie świadomi wagi pamięci w tworzeniu świadomości, jak i jej ograniczeń. Ten paradoks, łączący głębokie znaczenie pamięci wraz z jej zawodnością, stanowi oś proponowanego artykułu.

    The aim of the article is to analyse William Golding’s novel The Paper Men as an example of a modern confessional narrative. It is argued that the narrator of the novel, Wilfred Barclay, is characterised by his ironical stance both with respect to himself, other people, and – what is more important – to his own narrative. This ironical distance makes him a self-conscious narrator who is aware of both the powers and limitations of his confession. By referring to different modes of self-expression, most importantly the legal and the psychoanalytic, Barclay seeks to redefine confessional discourse to suit his own purposes. In his journal, he addresses issues which have always been crucial for authors of both ecclesiastical and secular confessions: free will, sin, damnation and redemption. The present article is a close examination of the above-mentioned issues. It is argued that that the relationship between the two major protagonists of the novel — Wilfred Barclay and Rick L. Tucker — can be treated as a commentary on Golding’s attitude towards literary critics. The conclusion of the article considers The Paper Men against the background of Golding’s views on literature and the creative process.

    The aim of the article is to contribute to a critical debate on the modernist influences in Nadine Gordimer’s short fiction by exploring her understanding of human identity in early stories (“In the Beginning” and “The Talisman” (1949)) and showing how this understanding influenced her later works (“The Correspondence Course” (1984)). It is argued that her early stories are informed by two views on identity: one continuous, coherent, and unitary, the other discontinuous, fragmented, and multiple. The latter notion of selfhood is closely associated with Gordimer’s conception of the short story as a form uniquely qualified to describe the tensions and ruptures in the lives of her characters. As it is shown, this insight into the short story, discussed at length in Gordimer’s essay “The Short Story in Africa” (1968), was derived from post-Enlightenment and post-Romantic conceptions of the self, as expressed by the modernist writers that Gordimer read extensively in her youth. The notion of a non-unitary and non-homogenous self is then applied in an analysis of a later story that concentrates on the political development of a character. In this way, the article proceeds from non-political to political stories, making a connection between topics that are seldom juxtaposed by Gordimer’s critics.

    Opis:
    The paper presents a detailed analysis of the material damaging process due to lowcycle fatigue and subsequent crack growth under thermal shocks and high pressure. Finite Element Method (FEM) model of a high pressure (HP) by-pass valve body and a steam turbine rotor shaft (used in a coal power plant) is presented. The main damaging factor in both cases is fatigue due to cycles of rapid temperature changes. The crack initiation, occurring at a relatively low number of load cycles, depends on alternating or alternating-incremental changes in plastic strains. The crack propagation is determined by the classic fracture mechanics, based on finite element models and the most dangerous case of brittle fracture. This example shows the adaptation of the structure to work in the ultimate conditions of high pressure, thermal shocks and cracking.
    W pracy przedstawiono szczegółową analizę rozwoju pęknięć w wyniku niskocyklicznego zmęczenia materiału w warunkach szoków cieplnych i oddziaływania ustalonych obciążeń statycznych. Przeprowadzono analizę przebiegu procesu pękania na przykładzie korpusu zaworu redukcyjnego pary w elektrowni węglowej i wału wirnika turbiny parowej. Głównym czynnikiem w obydwu przypadkach są mniej lub bardziej gwałtowne powtarzalne cykle zmian temperatury .W przypadku inicjacji pęknięcia po stosunkowo małej liczbie cykli zmian obciążenia mechanizm zmęczenia zależy od naprzemiennej lub naprzemienno-przyrostowej zmiany odkształceń plastycznych. Propagację pęknięcia w głąb materiału wyznaczono metodami klasycznej mechaniki pękania na podstawie modeli MES i najbardziej niebezpiecznego modelu pękania kruchego. Przedstawiono przypadek przystosowania się konstrukcji do pracy w warunkach szoków cieplnych i pękania.
