The aim of the study was to analyze indications and results of the first one thousand liver transplantations at Chair and Clinic of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw.Material and methods. Data from 1000 transplantations (944 patients) performed at Chair and Clinic of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery between 1994 and 2011 were analyzed retrospectively. These included 943 first transplantations and 55 retransplantations and 2 re-retransplantations. Frequency of particular indications for first transplantation and retransplantations was established. Perioperative mortality was defined as death within 30 days after the transplantation. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to estimate 5-year patient and graft survival.Results. The most common indications for first transplantation included: liver failure caused by hepatitis C infection (27.8%) and hepatitis B infection (18%) and alcoholic liver disease (17.7%). Early (< 6 months) and late (> 6 months) retransplantations were dominated by hepatic artery thrombosis (54.3%) and recurrence of the underlying disease (45%). Perioperative mortality rate was 8.9% for first transplantations and 34.5% for retransplantations. Five-year patient and graft survival rate was 74.3% and 71%, respectively, after first transplantations and 54.7% and 52.9%, respectively, after retransplantations.Conclusions. Development of liver transplantation program provided more than 1000 transplantations and excellent long-term results. Liver failure caused by hepatitis C and B infections remains the most common cause of liver transplantation and structure of other indications is consistent with European data.

This contribution discusses the preparation of partially disentangled polylactide from solution. The rheological method determined how the density of macromolecular entanglement depends on the concentration of the prepared solution. From a 0.1 wt % solution, the polymer having 20% of the original entanglements was obtained. The crystallization studies in isothermal conditions showed that the growth of crystals can be 10% faster if the polylactide is partially disentangled. For the first time, it was shown that in the partially disentangled polylactide there are shifts in temperatures of crystallization regimes.
W artykule omówiono otrzymywanie z roztworu częściowo rozplątanego poliaktydu. Metodą reologiczną określono gęstość splątań makrocząsteczek w funkcji stężenia sporządzonego roztworu. Z roztworu o stężeniu 0,1% mas. otrzymano polimer zawierający ok. 20% wyjściowych splątań. Na podstawie wyników badań procesu krystalizacji w warunkach izotermicznych stwierdzono, że wzrost kryształów może być o 10% szybszy w przypadku tylko częściowego splątania polilaktydu. Po raz pierwszy wykazano, że w częściowo rozplątanym polilaktydzie występuje przesunięcie wartości temperatury, w których następuje zmiana reżimu krystalizacji.

Opis:
The mechanical properties of two uniaxially stretched polylactides have been studied: the polylactide with reduced density of entanglements of macromolecules and with equilibrium density of entanglements. It has been shown that plastic deformation is easier in a partially disentangled polymer. Thus, this polymer was used to form an all-polymer composite by blending it with a second molten polymer: poly(butylene succinate) or polystyrene. During mixing, polylactide fibers were produced that strengthened the prepared composite.
Oceniano właściwości mechaniczne podczas jednoosiowego rozciągania dwóch rodzajów polilaktydu: ze zmniejszoną gęstością splątań makrocząsteczek i z równowagową gęstością splątań. Wykazano, że częściowo splątany polimer łatwiej ulega deformacji plastycznej. Z tego względu użyto go do wytworzenia kompozytu całkowicie polimerowego w wyniku zmieszania z drugim stopionym polimerem – poli(bursztynianem butylenu) lub polistyrenem. Podczas mieszania polimerów powstawały włókna polilaktydowe wzmacniające wytworzony kompozyt.

This paper discusses in detail the ethical issues in the contemporary professional sports and shows how these issues are addressed in the European Union countries and in the United States. From the ethical perspective it was decided that it is disputable to finance companies in competitive sports from a public purse (central and local government purse), to sponsor football clubs by bookmaking companies, to pay compensations (financial equivalents) for the change of membership in clubs by the players (the so called transfers). It was noticed that in the era of deepening sports commercialisation and application of ambush marketing strategies a real problem has become how to protect the interests of sport fans. It was decided that reaching of a certain scale of business operations (e.g. a certain threshold of revenues or profits) by monopolistic sports organisations should be paralleled by their loss of privileged status and/or change of their organisational and legal status (change from voluntary, non-profit organisations into companies operating under commercial law).

The players’ agent is a middleman who, on the strength of an agent contract and with pay, becomes obliged to act as a go-between in concluding contracts between players and clubs or transfer contracts between clubs. According to data of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), at the end of March 2011 there were 5794 licensed agents of football players in 219 national federations. According to the FIFA’s regulations, players, as well as clubs, have right to engage licensed agents in connection with negotiationg or renegotiationg of a player’s employment contract or a player’s transfer. Players and clubs are forbidden using services of unlicensed agents. The FIFA’s Regulations on Players’ Agents – and analogous regulations of the Polish Union of Football – burden the agent with many obligations. Moreover, definite obligations are imposed on clubs and players. Additional regulations introduce a code of players’ agents professional conduct. The player’s agent – as well as the player, the club and the union – can be imposed with sanctions for breaking the abovementioned rules. In milieus connected with Polish football there is a quite common opinion that, in spite of severe sanctions provided by regulations, obligations and rules of professional conduct are often broken in activities of players’ agents. However it is an opinion based on rumours and suppositions, which is not confirmed by decisions of the Department of Discipline of the Polish Union of Football concerning infliction of punishment.

When power is exercised in the enterprise some ethical issues might occur with business ownership, personnel policy, working conditions etc. These issues and ways of addressing them were depicted and interpreted from the perspective of the Church’s social teachings included in papal encyclicals, viz.: Rerum novarum, Laborem exercens, Centesimus Annus. In the Church’s social teachings a number of principles were noticed that are favourable for the ethical corporate management including the principle of the primacy of work over capital, right to private ownership, right to establish professional associations, right to fair pay, right to fulfil religious obligations and having rest during holidays, a duty to support the weak and the needy (solidarity principle). The analysis of the social content of papal encyclicals showed two faces of power. On the one hand it is necessary and has positive effects (introduction of corporate governance, taking right decisions, prevention of theft and assets devastation etc.); on the other hand improper power exercise may lead to a number of undesirable effects (corruption, worker discrimination, thriftlessness etc.) The paper identifies also sources, forms and power exercising planes in the enterprise.

Opis:
Luminous flux reduction during operation affects the operating lifetimes of LED lamps. Due to the very long lifetimes of LED sources, i.e. tens of thousands of hours, the lifetime declared by the manufacturer is most often determined by forecasting the luminous flux reduction. Lifetime forecasting is performed based on measuring the operating luminous flux reduction within a time frame of at least 6000 hours, every 1000 hours, followed by extrapolating the obtained results with a relevant exponential curve. This article presents the results of measurements of luminous flux changes taking place between 0 and 10,000 operating hours of several LED light sources. The obtained results were analyzed, and the lifetimes of the examined lamps were evaluated.

Opis:
A diagnostic and control system for a turbine is presented. The influence of the turbine controller on regulation processes in the power system is described. Measured quantities have been characterized and methods for detecting errors have been determined. The paper presents the application of fuzzy neural networks (fuzzy-NNs) for diagnosing sensor faults in the control systems of a steam turbine. The structure of the fuzzy-NN model and the model’s method of learning, based on measurement data, are presented. Fuzzy-NNs are used to detect faults procedures. The fuzzy-NN models are created and verified.
Przedstawiono system diagnostyki dla układu sterowania turbiny parowej. Opisano procesy regulacji w systemie elektroenergetycznym oraz strukturę układu regulacji turbiny kondensacyjnej w układzie bloku energetycznego. Mierzone wielkości zostały scharakteryzowane wraz z metodami wykrywania uszkodzeń dla poszczególnych wielkości. W pracy przedstawiono zastosowanie rozmytych sieci neuronowych do detekcji uszkodzeń torów pomiarowych Przedstawiono strukturę modelu rozmytego i metodę uczenia modelu na podstawie danych pomiarowych. Zaprezentowano przykład zastosowania modelu FNN i zweryfikowano jego działanie na podstawie rzeczywistych danych pomiarowych.

Opis:
W artykule dokonano analizy potencjalnych zagrożeń wynikających z emisji promieniowania nadfioletowego oraz przedstawiono kryteria oceny zagrożenia tym promieniowaniem. Scharakteryzowano źródła promieniowania – elektryczne promienniki oraz technologiczne źródła promieniowania UV. Następnie przedstawiono wyniki oceny ryzyka zawodowego dla przykładowych stanowisk pracy, na których występuje ekspozycja pracowników na promieniowanie UV.
In this article an analysis of the potential hazards, coming from the emission of the UV radiation, was performed and the criteria for the evaluation of the threat of said radiation were presented. Sources of the UV radiation were described – electric radiators as well as technological sources of the UV radiation. Following that the Author presents the results of the evaluation of occupational risk on selected work stations where the exposition of employees to the UV radiation is present.
