Opis:: Potato starch and corn starch are popular basic raw materials in the processing of biopolymers. One of the processing methods employed in the manufacture of biopolymers is extrusion-cooking technique. With specific parameters and equipment configurations, it is possible to obtain a wide variety of starch-based biopolymers. Loose fill foams are usually produced with the use of polystyrene, but the adverse environmental effects of conventional plastics provide an incentive for the development of new, environmentally friendly raw materials. The aim of the study was to apply the extrusion-cooking technique to prepare starch-based foams from potato starch and corn starch under various extruder screw speeds applied during processing. Process efficiency and energy consumption were also tested during processing. The expanded foams were analysed by means of cutting and compression tests to evaluate selected mechanical properties. The type of starch used and the processing screw speed had an impact on the efficiency and specific energy requirements of the process. The results showed that the screw speed had a significant effect on the cutting forces in the tested foams as well as on its compression properties. Higher hardness of foams was observed when potato starch was used as the basic raw material. Moreover, corn starch foams proved to be more elastic in compression tests.

Opis:: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a neurodegenerative condition caused by prions. In literature there are distinguished four forms of CJD: sporadic (sCJD), familial, iatrogenic and variant (vCJD). Current diagnostic criteria of these forms, basing on clinical symptoms of this disease, allow to distinguish probable and possible CJD. Unquestionable diagnosis can be established only after the patient’s death on the basis of characteristic neuropathological picture. Intravitally, in CJD diagnosis the result of anatomopathological examination can be taken into consideration (cerebral biopsy, palatine tonsils). A case has been presented of a 53-year-old female in whom basically the only clinical symptom (for 45 days) was psychogenic blindness followed by coma. Then, she survived eight months in a vegetative state. The clinical symptoms of the disease fulfilled the criteria of variant CJD but neuropathological examination revealed sCJD. The establishing of the diagnosis in the case of CJD usually takes weeks and even months and the diagnosis of vCJD results in epidemiological and thus economic complication. The presented case was an atypical course of sCJD. Authors wanted to emphasize that sCJD starts not always with the onset of dementia but that it is possible that it starts with psychotic symptoms.
Choroba Creutzfeldta-Jakoba (CJD) należy do chorób pierwotnie zwyrodnieniowych układu nerwowego wywołanych przez priony. CJD dzieli się na postać sporadyczną (sCJD), rodzinną, jatrogenną oraz wariant (vCJD). Współczesne kryteria diagnostyczne powyższych postaci, opierające się na klinicznych objawach tej choroby, pozwalają wyróżnić prawdopodobną oraz możliwą CJD. Pewne rozpoznanie można ustalić dopiero po śmierci chorego na podstawie charakterystycznego obrazu neuropatologicznego. Przyżyciowo w rozpoznaniu CJD może być brany pod uwagę wynik badania neuropatologicznego (biopsja mózgu) lub, w przypadku vCJD, migdałków podniebiennych. W pracy przedstawiono przypadek chorej, lat 53, u której w zasadzie jedynym objawem klinicznym (przez 45 dni) była ślepota zakończona śpiączką. Następnie, w stanie wegetatywnym, pacjentka przeżyła osiem miesięcy. Objawy kliniczne choroby spełniały kryteria wariantu CJD, jednak badanie neuropatologiczne wskazało na sCJD. Ustalenie rozpoznania w przypadku choroby Creutzfeldta-Jakoba trwa zwykle tygodniami, nawet miesiącami, a diagnoza vCJD wiąże się z powikłaniem epidemiologicznym i tym samym ekonomicznym. W pracy opisano przypadek nietypowego przebiegu sCJD, aby zwrócić uwagę na to, iż nie zawsze sCJD zaczyna się od objawów otępiennych i jest możliwe jej rozpoczęcie od objawów psychotycznych.

Opis:: Both the dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities as well as magnetization measurements were used to study the influence of the dilution of the magnetic chromium subarray by nonmagnetic antimony and aluminium ions on the magnetization processes for four spinel families under investigation. Substitution of the chromium ions by the nonmagnetic Sb and Al ions in the compounds under study leads to the very hard magnetization in the case of the compounds with Sb and very easy magnetization in the compounds with Al. This effect is connected with the electronic configurations of the Sb and Al ions as well as with ionic radii of these cations.
