For followers of religions which take solid cultural form of coherent doctrinalsystems, the fact that other comparable religious systems exist may posea difficult theoretical and existential problem that needs to be addressed ata number of levels, including the one of human existential experience. This isthe problem that was faced by the original followers of the Christian religionin relation to the Greek spiritual culture, and ancient Greek philosophy inparticular, at the time when it boldly explored spiritual areas closely connectedto Christianity. The problem became particularly significant in the secondcentury CE. It was tackled by early Christian thinkers that were educated inGreek philosophy themselves and used its ideas to solve the above-mentionedproblem.

The most important and enduring input of Middle Platonism is the way it unveiled the fascinating depths of human nature in its supernatural dimension, and its greatest secrets, including the most important and most sacred mystery of human love, which is the initiation into divinity itself. The discovery of the supernatural dimension of the human nature enforced a change from materialistic life preferences to spiritual ones — it was the consequence of accepting the supernatural aspects of human existence, but also, above all, it revealed its fascinating and mysterious depth in which divinity itself is both hidden and somehow exposed (although only to those who are initiated). Middle Platonic philosophers returned to Platonic postulates: “follow God” and “imitate to God,” which replaced the Stoic “live in accordance with nature” and “follow nature.” In the eyes of the Platonics, the new direction of human ethical development was to be found in imitating the transcendent and incorporeal divinity.

The article takes up the topic of mystical motif of catharsis present in Plato’s dialogues Phaedo and Republic as well as their links with the mysticism of the Ancient Greek mysteries. The philosophical catharsis is a result of touching the divine, transcendent Truth.
Oczyszczenie (katharsis) to motyw typowo misteryjny (orfi cki). W misteriach orfi ckich oczyszczenia przybierały dwojaką formę. Pierwsze miały charakter ciągły i realizowały się w tzw. „życiu orfi ckim” (które jest jakby pierwsza formą „życia fi lozofi cznego”). Drugie spełniały się poprzez misteryjne wtajemniczenia, których istotę stanowiło duchowe doświadczenie boskości (nadprzyrodzoności). Motyw oczyszczeń w obu tych formułach odnajdujemy w dialogach Platona. Pierwsza przyjmuje formę tzw. „życia fi lozofi cznego”, które praktycznie realizuje ideał melete thanatu. Druga spełnia się poprzez dążenie do prawdy, a w punkcie kulminacyjnym przyjmuje postać duchowego doświadczenia prawdy absolutnej, którą okazuje się Bóg. Doświadczenie Prawdy absolutnej jest tu równoważne z misteryjnym wtajemniczeniem w boskość. Filozofi a w swym dążeniu do prawdy przybiera na poziomie duchowym formę filozofi cznych wtajemniczeń. Tym samym wszelkie dążenie do prawdy w formule platońskiej to niejako wejście w oczyszczające (i zarazem przyciągające) pole Prawdy absolutnej.

Opis:
The paper explores Plato’s idea of philosophical initiation and purification in Gorgias (in the context of people’s moral condition and ethical ideals they believe), and in some other dialogues of Plato (Phaedo, Phaedrus, and Symposium), in which Socrates refers to acts of initiation and purification, probably ones similar to the initiation into Greek mysteries. The essence and culmination of such initiation was marked by spiritual experience of the divinity of human soul. Similar subject matter may be found in some Socratic dialogues.
Artykuł przedstawia platoński motyw wtajemniczeń i oczyszczeń w Gorgiaszu (w kontekście dyskusji na temat moralnej kondycji ludzi i wyznawanych przez nich ideałów etycznych) oraz w innych dialogach (Fedonie, Fajdrosie, Uczcie), w których Sokrates powołuje się na wtajemniczenia, podobne prawdopodobnie do tych, które były udziałem wtajemniczanych w misteria greckie, których kulminacją było egzystencjalne przeżycie tajemnicy boskości ludzkiej duszy. Podobne nastroje odnajdujemy w dialogach Platona.

A sophistic way towards moral maturity   Morality is a component of culture, variable as much as the whole culture is. It cannot claim absolutization. Natural law is the only constant, ingrained in some way in the moral tissue of a person and revealing itself as its inborn moral sensitivity. Consequently, a morally mature person, with properly developed awareness of innate moral sensitivity, acting in him as a kind of moral instinct, is capable to judge what in this culture is and what is not in keeping with natural law, independently of different state institutions and all other organizations’ promulgations. The individual person is the real creator of culture and he also transmits in some way his characteristic sensitivity to this culture (under the condition that morally sensitive people prevail; as history and modern times teach us this is not always the rule). Therefore, culture and civilization, in a different manner, in accordance with manifold local determinants, makes its own way in its proper rhythm to the state in which absorption of natural law is achieved to its maximum, that is it leads to the state in which the established laws reconstruct natural law as accurately as possible, or at least its spirit. A person as an individual is the subject and creator of culture in all its aspects and that is why he cannot be treated like an object in the context of different cultural values (e.g. ethical, religious and political). If that is the case, culture is degenerated and artificial. Such are the consequences of a sophistic (and mainly Protagoras) science on humans in a specific environment of culture and civilization.

This work will discuss the eponymous tale of „Cupid and Psyche”, originally written as a part of Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis’ „Metamorphoses”. The tale’s main thread, the motif of Psyche making an effort to reclaim Cupid’s lost affection, is depicted through the means of mysteriosophic context of Apuleius’ philosophy, as well as his theory on love. The work will draw upon the characteristic motifs of the ancient sacred mysteries, thus suggesting that the story of Psyche’s trials and tribulations is somewhat an allegory of the spiritual development of man, who searches for love to find the meaning of his life and the fulfillment of his spiritual yearning for the eternal and the divine.
