We present a novel spatial pooling strategy and the results of an extensive multi-scale analysis of the well-known structural similarity index metric (SSIM) for objective image quality evaluation. We show, in contrast with some previous studies, that even relatively simple perceptual importance pooling strategies can significantly improve objective metric performance evaluated as the correlation with subjective quality assessment. In particular, we define an attention and quality driven pooling mechanism that focuses structural comparisons within the SSIM model to only those pixels exhibiting significant structural degradations. We show that optimal objective metric performance is achieved over very sparse spatial domains indeed that ignore most of the signal data. We also investigate an explicit breakdown of the structural models within SSIM and show that in combination with the proposed attention and quality driven pooling some of these models represent well performing metrics in their own right, when applied at appropriate scale for which there may not be a single optimal value. Our experiments demonstrate that the augmented SSIM metric using the proposed pooling model provides performance advantage on an extensive LIVE dataset covering hundreds of degraded images and 5 different distortion types compared to both conventional SSIM and state-of-the-art objective quality metrics.

This paper analyses the changes in transfer characteristics of the vocal tract when closed by a mask, i.e. a chamber. The analysis was performed in two ways: by analytical estimation and by measurements in the vocal tract physical model for the case of mask with inner volume V = 430 cm3, corresponding to the oxygen masks used in combat airplanes. It was shown that closing the vocal tract with a mask cavity increases the first formant frequency by about 10% in front and high vowels (/e/, /i/, and /u/) and the frequencies of the first two formants by about 5% in the remaining two vowels (/a/ and /o/). It was also revealed that longitudinal and transversal resonances in the mask chamber can lead to errors in the recognition of the vowel formant frequencies. The results point to the need for additional knowledge about resonances in mask application.

Opis:
The aim of this work was an investigation of structural and electrical properties of sintered barium-zinc-titanate ceramics. Mixtures of $BaCO_{3},$ $ZnO$ and $TiO_{2}$ were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill up to 80 minutes and sintered isothermally in air for 120 minutes at 1300°C. The phase composition in the $BaCO_{3}-ZnO-TiO_{2}$ system after milling and sintering was analyzed using the XRD method. The existence of pure barium-zinc-titanate has been registered. Microstructure analyses were performed using SEM. The results of electric resistivity, capacitance and loss tangent of the sintered samples were correlated with the XRD and SEM results.

In different areas of science such as medicine, biology and engineering the image analysis is widely used. Quantitative measuring by the image analysis has also found application in metal materials science, especially in metallographic microstructure analysis. The measuring of the linear and area dimensions of the microconstituents in the metal material structure performed by the image analysis is presented in the paper. The effects of the heat treatment temperature on the brittle phase content in the structure of the heat resistant Ni-Cr-Co-W alloy were analysed. Investigation of the influence of the alloying elements content in the Al alloys for automotive application, on dendrite arm spacing in the cast structure are also presented. Obtained results of the quantitative measured dimensions have shown direct impact of the process parameters on the analysed metals microstructure characteristics. All tests were performed by the light optical microscope with automatic image analyser. Presented experimental results are based on a large number of measurements. A statistical analysis was performed and a high correlation of the results was obtained. For each of the presented investigations and analyzed phenomenon, a statistical mathematical model is suggested with the boundary conditions defined by the investigated intervals of variables.

Nanocrystalline $(Fe_{1-x}Ni_{x})_{81}Nb_{7}B_{12}$ (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) and Vitroperm alloys were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy after neutron irradiation at fluences of $10^{16} n$/$cm^{2}$ and $10^{17} n$/$cm^{2}$. From structure analyses, we have identified ferromagnetic bcc-FeNi in nanocrystalline state and partly paramagnetic $(Fe-Ni)_{23}B_{6}$ phase. Neutron irradiation had an influence on the magnetic microstructure, which is manifested in the change of the Mössbauer parameters, such as the direction of net magnetic moment, the intensity of internal magnetic field and the volumetric fraction. The results indicate that the changes of the microscopic magnetic parameters, induced by neutron irradiation, depend on iron and nickel content. Significant radiation damage started at neutron fluence of $10^{17} n$/$cm^{2}$.

Bovine herpesvirus type 4 (BHV-4) is related to many different conditions: infertility, postpartal metritis, vulvovaginitis, mastitis, encephalitis, calf pneumonia, keratoconjunctivitis, cutaneous lesions, digital dermatitis and abortion. In this study a retrospective PCR examination of 100 extracted DNA samples from aborting cows was performed in order to determine: prevalence of BHV-4 in abortive cattle, whether coinfections BHV-4 with other abortifacient pathogens are present in the same sample and to determine the month of gestation when BHV-4 associated abortions were detected. Out of 100 examined samples, the BHV-4 genome was detected in 21 samples (21%). In two samples we detected coinfection of BHV-4 with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and in one with Neospora caninum. Most of the BHV-4-associated abortions were detected during the seventh month of gestation. It was concluded that an active BHV-4 infection was present among cows that aborted on the farms examined. The high prevalence of the BHV-4 genome in abortion material suggests that this virus may have cause the abortions. Further studies and examinations are needed to establish causative connection between presence of BHV-4 and abortion.

Optical absorption and emission spectroscopy together with low energy electron interaction (elastic scattering, excitation, ionization, resonances) with biologically relevant molecules (nitrogen, oxygen, water, alcohols, tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydrofurfuril alcohol, 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran, pyrimidine, glycine, alanine) are studied in order to understand radiation damage and to investigate the presence of pollutants in the atmosphere. Versatile high resolution electron spectrometers are used in the present study of electron-molecule interactions. Energy loss spectra were recorded for these molecules in order to identify electronic transitions from ground state to both allowed and optically forbidden states. Optical emission spectra have been recorded from gas discharge processes by low resolution optical spectrometer (Ocean Optics 2000). Also, electronic spectra were compared with high resolution synchrotron photoabsorption spectra where these spectra had been available. Experimental methods of absorption-based laser spectroscopy were reviewed being of the most widely used analytical tools for detection of a specific molecule and quantitative measurements, based on the Beer-Lambert absorption law.

Finemet and Vitrovac® 6025 metallic glasses were irradiated by light (N) and heavy (Au and Ta) ions at different energies from 110 keV to 250 MeV/u (MeV per mass unit) and fluences from 1 × $10^{11}$ ions/$cm^2$ to 1 × $10^{17}$ ions/$cm^2$. They were analysed by the Mössbauer spectrometry and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Qualitative differences were observed between the radiation effects caused by light and heavy ions.

This contribution presents experimental data concerning the influence of fast heavy ions on magnetic susceptibility of VITROVAC®6025 and VITROPERM®800 metallic glasses. Samples of magnetic ribbons were irradiated with Au, and Ta ions at 11.1 MeV/A (energy per nucleon), and U ions at 5.9 MeV/A. The irradiation fluences varied from 5×$10^{10}$ up to 1.2×$10^{13}$ ions/$cm^{2}$. Relative change of the samples' magnetic susceptibility after and before irradiation was measured and evaluated as a function of the irradiation fluence. Measurements were done with a commercial Kappa-bridge device. We observed that VITROPERM® showed less change of magnetic susceptibility in comparison with VITROVAC® and this change occurred at higher fluences. This indicates higher radiation hardness of VITROPERM® compared with VITROVAC® against high-energy heavy ions. In addition, heavier ions caused larger change of magnetic susceptibility than the lighter ones and the effect could be roughly scaled with the level of electronic stopping.

Opis:
Ray tracing simulation of sound field in rooms is a common tool in room acoustic design for predicting impulse response. There are numerous commercial engineering tools utilising ray tracing simulation. A specific problem in the simulation is the modelling of diffuse reflections when contribution of individual surface is prevailing. The paper introduces modelling of scattering which is interesting when the whole impulse response of a room is not a goal but contribution of certain surface. The main goal of the Project is to shape directivity characteristics of scattered reflection. Also, an innovative approach is suggested for converting the energy histogram information obtained by ray tracing into an “equivalent impulse response”. The proposed algorithm is tested by comparing the results with measurements in a real sound field, realised in a scaled model where a diffusing surface is hardware-implemented.

In this work, influence of ²³⁸U swift (5.9 MeV/u) heavy ions on the as-prepared Fe-Cu-Nb-Si-B metallic glass was investigated by in situ temperature X-ray diffraction of synchrotron radiation. It was observed that ion irradiation strongly affected the temperature evolution of the parameters of the first diffuse peak. It is hypothesized that ion irradiation induced structural rearrangement that increased the degree of disorder of the amorphous structure. During heat treatment, structural relaxation and annealing out of this ion-induced degradation took place. Consequently, the original structure was recovered as demonstrated by the behaviour of the first diffuse peak broadening and devitrification process.

Nanocrystalline alloy of FINEMET and NANOPERM-type were studied by the Mössbauer spectroscopy after atmospheric corrosion up to 10 months. Corrosion process has an influence on the magnetic microstructure, which reflects at the Mössbauer parameters as a change in direction of net magnetic moment, intensity, and distribution of internal magnetic field. During corrosion process the most occurring tendency was the rotation of net magnetic moment out of the ribbon plane. This behaviour might result from the internal stress produced during corrosion treatment. The observed changes in the average hyperfine field and shape of its distribution indicated the changes of the microscopic magnetic properties induced by corrosion damage. These results are compared with radiation corrosion.

The efficiency of talc mechanical activation by means of two different mechano-activators - centrifugal and attrition mill is investigated in this study and the comparative analysis of the characteristics of obtained talc powders is presented. A new approach for obtaining high-grade talc concentrate with low Fe2O3 content is achieved through effect of mechanical activation of talc accompanied by hydrometallurgical process. The applied mechanical activation process conditions of ultra-centrifugal mill were defined by number of rotor revolutions, sieve mesh size, and current intensity. These operating parameters of the ultra-centrifugal mill were variable. Ultra fine grinding of talc in attrition mill (attritor) was carried out in various time intervals - from 5 to 15 min. The following technological parameters of the mechanical activation were monitored: time of mechanical activation, circumferential rotor speed, capacity of ultra-centrifugal mill, and specific energy consumption. The investigation was based on a kinetic model. The structure and behavior of activated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

The aim of this study was to choose the genotypes of industrial tomato for the content of bioactive components (ascorbic acid, β-carotene, lycopene, total phenols and flavonoids) in fruits and its preservation during thermal treatment (by drying with parallel warm air at 60°C) and making of tomato juice (by pasteurization – cooking at 100°C for 7 minutes). For this research, a comparative trial has been set up with 7 genotypes, 1 commercial variety (SP-109) and 6 selected lines (SPP, SPSM, SPRZ, SPRM-20, S-60 and SPO) of high inbreeding generations. Experimental design has been done according to standard method of growing industrial tomato in random block system with three replications. By analysing the cumulative results of all researched genotypes for processing industry, the best for drying and fresh consumption was SPRZ and for juice extraction, SPSM was the best line.

W złożonych systemach, w których koszty poprawy niezawodności poszczególnych elementów są znane, często ogranicza się budżet przeznaczony na podnoszenie ogólnej niezawodności systemu. W takich przypadkach konieczna jest maksymalizacja niezawodności systemu przy jednoczesnym utrzymaniu kosztów na poziomie minimum. Powszechnie znane metody rozwiązywania powyższego problemu opierają się na wyznaczaniu ważności kosztów, co wymaga określenia rang elementów składowych systemu, a w dalszej kolejności wyodrębnienia pewnej liczby najważniejszych elementów pierwszorzędnej rangi. W niniejszej pracy zaproponowano nowe podejście do określania najważniejszych komponentów systemu w oparciu o problem maksymalnego pokrycia w granicach budżetu (budgeted maximum coverage problem); podejście wdrażano z wykorzystaniem wcześniej znanych minimalnych przekrojów niezdatności. Optymalizacja proponowanego modelu matematycznego, pozwoliła na jednoczesne wyznaczenie wszystkich najważniejszych elementów, dla których łączne wydatki na utrzymanie ruchu nie przekraczały całkowitego ograniczonego budżetu. Nowe podejście zostało przebadane w serii eksperymentów przeprowadzonych na zbiorze przykładów testowych, za które posłużyły wzorcowe drzewa błędów. Wyniki badań porównano z wynikami uzyskanymi za pomocą dwóch miar ważności kosztów – miary ważności opartej na kosztach oraz miary ważności opartej na opłacalności. W większości przypadków, proponowany model dawał lepsze wyniki niż pomiary ważności kosztów.
Importance measures are used for indexing system components due to their impact on the system’s overall reliability. In order to identify the specific number of the most critical components, first-ranked components are singled out as the most important ones. However, importance measures consider only the influence of individual components and they are not applicable to combinations or groups of components. This common feature of importance measures is referred to in literature as one of still open issues. This paper proposes a new approach for determining the most important system components, where a whole set of components are determined simultaneously taking into account their interdependence. In systems with a large number of interdependent components, the number of the most important components which should be prevented is often limited due to the available budget. Using pre-known minimal cut sets, a mathematical model based on the Budgeted Maximum Coverage Problem is proposed. By its optimization, the simultaneous determination of all of the most important components whose total expenses do not exceed the limited overall budget is achieved. The new approach was tested by a series of experiments conducted over a set of test examples. The results of the experiments were compared with the results obtained using two commonly used cost importance measures.
