Opis:
The aim of the article is to elucidate the reasons why the critical pedagogue Henry A. Giroux, in his recent works, was inspired by the thought (in many aspects completely different) of Hannah Arendt, particularly by her analyses concerning the role of public spaces and the power of judgement in the modern world. The article develops three contact points in which the two distinct paradigms meet. They are: the metaphor of the “dark times”, adopted by Giroux, public spaces and the university.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to analyse the changes in the conditions of academic freedom that occurred over the last several decades and to point out the possible ramifications of those changes. Firstly, the author begins by depicting the origins and the meaning of the neohumanistic modern idea of academic freedom and with outlining some of its paradoxes and limitations. Secondly, the classical neohumanistic concept of academic freedom is juxtaposed with new premises of economic neoliberalism, as diagnosed by Michel Foucault. Also the consequences of economic legitimisation of political order for academic freedom are drawn. Ultimately, the author concentrates on the results of economic limitations of freedom for free thinking and its relationship with human moral judgements.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to consider the philosophy of Hans Blumenberg as potentially pedagogical thought. Hans Blumenberg’s way of questioning can be juxtaposed with the Heideggerian way of questioning (much more popular in the philosophy of education) that starts with the human being as an ontologically distinguished creature. Blumenberg, unlike Heidegger, does not pursue the question of being as such, he consciously limits himself to anthropology, i.e. the humanity of being. Consequently, his anthropology is not fundamentally ontological, but contingent and culture-oriented. Blumenberg’s phenomenological description of humanity concentrates on the ways humans deal with different modes of the absolute (not only theological, but also natural and political). It is a consequence of Blumenberg’s anthropological statement concerning the human being as an underprivileged creature which compensates its natural shortcomings with culture (i.e. myths, metaphors, science, etc.), being able to make the absolute less predominant or rigorous, mitigating it in a way. This has humanistic and pedagogical import: the greater distance between us and absolute realities, the more space there is for human creativity and self-creativity, foremostly in the field of education.

Opis:
It seems that the first two decades of the twenty first century demonstrate political mythology to be still functioning in the political life of the West. In this context, it is interesting to view the recent publications of Hans Blumenberg’s Nachlass: Präfiguration (“Prefiguration,” 2014) and Rigorismus der Wahrheit (“Rigorism of Truth,” 2015), as they reveal unpredicted complications for the interpretation of his philosophy of myth as well as of his political stances. They also evoke some more general questions concerning the role of myth in our contemporary political life. The aim of this article is to present the paradoxes connected with the posthumously published Blumenberg critique of Hannah Arendt and to situate it in the wider context of twentieth century political thought, specifically the work of Sorel, Schmitt, Rosenberg and Cassirer. It is also to point to more general ethical and political ambiguities connected with the problem of political mythology in the present.

Opis:
The importance of education: In conversation with Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt. The text is a lecture delivered in German at Augsburg University in 2018. Its aim was to share with German colleagues from the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences (including both Philosophy and Education) the research whose effect was the publication of Hannah Arendt and Martin Heidegger. Philosophy, modernity and education (American edition 2019). The thesis of this lecture (and the book) is that Arendt’s answer to Heidegger’s philosophy, intelligible only within the wide context of both thinkers’ struggles with the philosophical tradition of the West, also opens up a new horizon of conceptualizing the relationship between philosophy and education. This enterprise begins with a critical reconstruction of concepts that traditionally connected education to philosophy. Thereafter, it is a development of Arendt’s thesis of the broken thread of tradition, situated in the wider context of Heideggerian philosophy and his entanglement with Nazism, and consequently, it questions the traditional relationship between philosophy and education. In the final parts of this book returns the problem of dialogue between philosophy, thinking, and university education in times whose political and ethical framework is no longer determined by the continuity of tradition, but the caesura of 20th‑century totalitarianism.

This paper is an analysis of the debate concerning higher education that has been taking place among German intellectuals since World War II. The purpose of this research is: firstly – to trace back the relationship between the presuppositions of the Prussian reform and its historical realization, pointing out social and political contexts of the reshaping of the German higher education system and outlining a map of possible stances in this debate; secondly – to present the problem of autonomy of German universities from the perspective of this debate and the paradoxical relationship between idea and reality, theory and practice; thirdly – to relate these analyses to the contemporary conditions of Polish higher education and make an attempt to show this condition from an external, yet close perspective, as the Humboldtian idea and its legacy seems to be.

The wounds of war and the scars of culture: Simone Weil and René Girard on the symmetry of violence

Opis:
The philosophical discourses of violence developed in the 20th century can be grasped in two fundamental paradigms: the paradigm of force (Simone Weil) and the paradigm of domination (Horkheimer and Adorno). This article aims at situating René Girard’s theory of the culture within the paradigm of violence as an immediate force, stemming from Simone Weil’s phenomenological description of force in The Iliad. Simone Weil can be read as a model for modern reflection on violence in different ways. One of them can be identifying her interpretation of The Iliad as a starting point for the critique or even unmasking of blind reifying violence through the philosophy of culture: an example of this kind of translation can be found in Girard and his analyses of the figure of the scapegoat and rituals of violence, (sanctioned within myth), transferring violence into a sacral sphere. The pivotal point of the comparison is the concept of kydos, “the triumphant fascination of superior violence,” developed by Girard in Violence and the Sacred. The Greek term, which connects violence, understood in the mode of immediate force, with the magical and sacral dimension, serves as a key concept for comparison of the two thinkers’ conceptualizations of force. It allows interpretation of the conceptual tenets of Girardian theory, such as unanimity, symmetry, mimesis, and myth in the light of the key concepts of Weil, such as reification, symmetry, unawareness, and the blind mechanism of force. It also allows us to point out the discrepancies between the two conceptualizations (above all, the tensions between the rationality and irrationality of violence) and to grasp Girard’s theory as a philosophical commentary on Weil’s insights. This is going to fill a space on the map of modern discourses of violence.

Preview: The category of violence is unavoidably ambiguous, and the very moment we make an attempt at clarification or disambiguation an acute question arises, from what perspective should it be considered, philosophical, psychological, sociological, anthropological, or pedagogical? We then realize that even if we decided on one perspective, it is unavoidably intertwined with the others, which opens up a manifold field of possible approaches. Thus, the agenda adopted here is modest: to present a specific spectrum of accounts of violence and reveal its multiple facets that are inscribed both in the existential, individual dimension and in a socio-cultural context. The presented perspective depends on each individual author’s stance and the direction of her/his analyses. The path we have chosen in our considerations leads from violence in political power relations to symbolic forms of violence – from theoretical accounts of political oppression to descriptions of ontological, metaphoric or symbolic forms of violence, from Nietzsche to Foucault, from de Sade to Agamben, and to Arendt.

Rituximab is a chimeric murine-human monoclonal anti-CD20 antibody, which binds specifically with CD20 receptor located on majority of mature B-cell lymphocytes. We are presenting the case of sudden cardiac arrest with ventricular fibrillation after intravenous injection of rituximab in a patient with DLBCL type NGC.
