    CLIL classrooms are not typical language classrooms due to the fact that language is the medium through which content is “transported”. Non-linguistic content is used to teach a language and learners acquire new knowledge but in a foreign language. The following paper provides an outline of research on the role of a teacher in a CLIL classroom. Starting with a brief insight into the phenomenon of CLIL, and a general overview of the qualitative studies based on observations, questionnaires and interviews, the article focuses particularly on the main features of a CLIL teacher.

    Images presented in advertisements are very powerful and have huge impact on our perception of the world. The roles of women and men have changed within the last decade and therefore it is worth investigating the way they are perceived in advertising. The purpose of our study was twofold. First, we aimed to find out how Polish students from the English Department at a tertiary level institution in Poland, who are mainly females, perceive the image of a man in advertising. Our second purpose was to analyse their reception of slogans used in the advertisements. In order to find out the answers to our research questions concerning the image of males in advertising as well as language of advertising, we have decided to design a special questionnaire in which the students were asked to comment on advertisements associated with particular image concerning men. The advertisements had been chosen in relation to the categories established by Frith and Müeller (2010). While analysing the data we decided to use these categories, which are to be described in the theoretical part of the article. The obtained data has allowed us to find out what the image of a man is and what kind of language is used to make the advertisements effective.
    Wizerunki prezentowane w reklamach są bardzo mocne i mają ogromny wpływ na nasze postrzeganie świata. Role kobiet i mężczyzn zmieniły się w ciągu ostatniego dziesięciolecia i dlatego warto zbadać sposób, w jaki są one postrzegane w reklamie. Cel naszego badania był dwojaki. Po pierwsze, chcieliśmy dowiedzieć się jak polscy studenci anglistyki, którymi są głównie kobiety, postrzegają wizerunek mężczyzny przedstawiany w reklamie. Naszym drugim celem była analiza postrzegania przez studentki sloganów zastosowanych w reklamach. W celu zebrania odpowiedzi na nasze pytania badawcze dotyczące wizerunku mężczyzn w reklamie, a także języka reklamy, postanowiliśmy przygotować specjalny kwestionariusz, w którym studentki były proszone o skomentowanie reklam związanych z danym wizerunkiem dotyczącym mężczyzn. Reklamy zostały wybrane na podstawie kategorii ustalonych przez Frith i Müeller (2010). Podczas analizy danych postanowiliśmy wykorzystać te kategorie, które opiszemy w części teoretycznej naszego artykułu. Uzyskane dane pozwoliły nam dowiedzieć się jaki jest wizerunek mężczyzn w reklamie oraz jaki rodzaj języka sprawia, że reklamy są skuteczne.

    The academic language has certain features that do not occur in typical informal interaction about everyday things. The texts studied and produced in academic disciplines have different functions, and are structured in different ways. The linguistic features play an important role in the realization of different types of meanings. Some are important for their role in the expression of content (e.g. types of lexis, prepositional phrases or markers of logical relations between clauses). Others are involved in the role of the writer (e.g. informing, questioning or evaluating) or the organization of the content in the text. The following paper provides an outline of the research on Academic Key Words studied in the texts of university students taken from the written corpora: the International Corpus of Learner English (the Polish and Turkish component of ICLE). Starting with a brief insight into the features of academic language, the article focuses on the analysis of chosen academic nouns, nouns, adjectives and adverbs as well as some basic clauses used by the Turkish and Polish university students of English as a Foreign language.

    Searching for ways to expand the spectrum of methods of teaching and learning foreign languages triggers valuable initiatives and offers support for both students and teachers. Programs such as French immersion in Canada, content-based instruction (CBI), and content and language integrated learning (CLIL) have become popular across the world (Harrop, 2012), which is rapidly becoming a global village where the role of languages is crucial. In an integrated world, teaching content through language is viewed as a modern form of educational delivery; therefore, as the editors emphasize “teacher preparation and professional development endeavors are key drivers of successful I/B and CBI programs across a variety of models” (p. 3). Teacher Development for Immersion and Content-Based Instruction is a key contribution to the field, which offers valuable insights into the complexity of teacher preparation as well as further professional development in the case of immersion/bilingual contexts.

    The aim of the article is to discuss the research results of the study conducted on English teachers’ negative emotions experienced during COVID-19. In order to collect the data, 30 English teachers from secondary schools were asked to keep a diary for one semester and describe situations that aroused feelings of anxiety, anger, and loneliness. The study was of a qualitative nature, and it showed that most of the emotions that the English teachers experienced were associated with the lack of support from the government and their colleagues, and also with the uncertainty about the future.

    The aim of this article is to provide an outline of the research on code-switching in CLIL, starting with a brief description of code-switching and its main causes. The study, which is to be presented, was conducted among Secondary School CLIL learners and is based on a questionnaire especially prepared for this study. The main aim of the study was to investigate the situations in which CLIL learners switch the codes. Additionally, the researchers were trying to find out the positive and negative impact of this phenomenon on the foreign language being acquired.

    Although the term Deep Learning does not seem to be a new term in language learning, it attracted relatively little attention until just a few years ago. Different fields of study show that Deep Learning leverages a sophisticated process to learn multiple levels of abstraction from the data; however, in languages, the term has been widely accepted as the key concept in the transformation and personalisation of the learning process. In this paper, we take the definition of Deep Learning, and we corroborate the theories by use of the study which aims to assess the needs of students in the context of language exercises, resources as well as tools and modern technological solutions. A proper understanding of Deep Learning is necessary to examine the potential benefits for students and the broadly defined society. Therefore, the essence of the research is to obtain the answers to what is important in the education of modern foreign languages and also what the teacher’s role is. A quantitative study was conducted on 441 students of English Philology. The results of the needs analysis of foreign language students allow for a greater understanding of their expectations towards themselves and their teachers; additionally, to answer the question about what kind of education recipients they are and whether they are active participants in the whole educational process.
    Choć termin pogłębionego procesu uczenia się (deep learning) nie wydaje się być terminem nowym w nauczaniu języków, do niedawna przyciągnął stosunkowo niewiele uwagi naukowców. W wielu językach jednak termin ten został powszechnie zaakceptowany jako kluczowa koncepcja transformacji i personalizacji procesu uczenia się. W niniejszym artykule prezentujemy definicję deep learning i potwierdzamy teorię poprzez badanie, którego celem jest ocena potrzeb uczniów w kontekście ćwiczeń językowych, zasobów, a także narzędzi i nowoczesnych rozwiązań technologicznych. Prawidłowe zrozumienie pogłębionego uczenia się jest konieczne, aby zbadać potencjalne korzyści wynikające z niego dla studentów i szeroko rozumianego społeczeństwa. Dlatego też istotą prowadzonych badań jest uzyskanie odpowiedzi na pytanie, co jest ważne w dydaktyce współczesnych języków obcych, a także jaka jest rola nauczyciela w tym zakresie. Wyniki analiz potrzeb uczniów języków obcych pozwalają uzyskać wiedzę na temat ich oczekiwań wobec siebie samych oraz wobec nauczycieli, a także odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jakiego rodzaju odbiorcami edukacji są młodzi uczący się i czy aktywnie partycypują w globalnym procesie kształcenia.

    The following article discusses Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in European higher education, which has become popular in recent years due to the status of English as a foreign language. Firstly, the difference between CLIL and English Medium Instruction (EMI) is explained, then CLIL modules in higher education are presented. Furthermore, CLIL special pedagogy in higher education is described. The subsequent section is devoted to the benefits and challenges of CLIL in higher education as listed in the literature; finally, insight into research on language in the CLIL higher education context is addressed. The data presented in the article is based on an in-depth literature review and research conducted in higher education institutions in Europe. The findings show that even though CLIL has become a popular approach in higher education in recent years, adapting this concept has been a great challenge due to the very little preparation, proper methodological training and complex linguistic learning situations.
