Opis:
Ultrasonic attenuation due to phonon-phonon interaction and thermoelastic loss was evaluated in VIII group transition metal Pt in a wide temperature range (100 K to 1500 K) for longitudinal and shear waves along〈100〉, 〈110〉 and〈111〉 directions and for shear waves polarised along different directions. Electrostatic and Born-Mayer potentials were used to obtain second and third order elastic constants, taking nearest-neighbour distance and hardness parameter as input data. Second and third order elastic constants data obtained at different temperatures were used to obtain Gruneisen parameters and non-linearity or anisotropy parameters which in turn were used to evaluate (α/f$\text{}^{2}$)$\text{}_{l}$ and (α/f$\text{}^{2}$)$\text{}_{s}$ in Akhiezer regime. The results were discussed and it was found that at lower temperatures (α/f$\text{}^{2}$) increases rapidly with temperature and then rate of increase becomes very small. Contribution to the total attenuation due to thermoelastic loss is negligible so that due to phonon-phonon interaction establishing that major part of energy from sound wave is removed due to interaction with thermal phonons (lattice vibrations).

Opis:
The Oxfordian to Tithonian sediments deposited along the southern Tethyan margin exhibit very diverse sedimentary facies. The Jaisalmer Basin, situated along the northwestern margin of the Indian peninsula, is a good example of those preserving these sediments (Baisakhi Formation). The scattered nature of the outcrops, due to peneplanation and desert sand cover, and the diversity in sedimentary facies, have led earlier workers to employ a confusing lithostratigraphy and lithostratigraphic correlations. New records of ammonites, more detailed facies description and the application of the sequence stratigraphic method helped to sort out the stratigraphical problems of these isolated outcrops. The complexity of the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian-Tithonian sediments present in the Jaisalmer Basin, as evidenced by ammonite finds can be traced along an onshore – offshore transect. Within the Oxfordian-Tithonian strata of the Baisakhi Formation, Jaisalmer Basin, 35 parasequences grouped into three depositional sequences (TST-HST/FSST) have been recognized. In at least two cases, the maximum flooding surfaces (MFS) are superimposed on the transgressive surfaces within very condensed sections. The parasequences belong to a continuous succession representing shoreface (deepest part of the basin) to foreshore (shallowest part of the basin). During deposition of the Tithonian succession the southern part of the basin witnessed shallow, nearshore, or foreshore to fluvial depositional environments and, consequently, contains several depositional gaps and less distinct parasequences. The chronological order of the parasequences has been established on the basis of ammonites: Oxfordian – Perisphinctes (Dichotomosphinctes) sp. and P. (Dichotomoceras) sp.; Kimmeridgian – Torquatisphinctes alterniplicatus (Waagen) and Pachysphinctes aff. major Spath; Tithonian – Aulacosphinctoides sp., Virgatosphinctinae and other zonal ammonites recorded by earlier workers. The most logical facies correlation in conformity with Walther’s law was also used. Unfortunately, no marker beds have been recognized; however, the record of at least two brackish-water phases helped in the understanding of depositional settings along the onshore-offshore transects during these time intervals. In general, the Kimmeridgian-Tithonian part of Baisakhi Formation exhibits a general coarsening-upward trend and a change from lower shoreface zone to fluvial environments. The three sequence cycles interpreted within the Oxfordian-Tithonian sediments in the Jaisalmer Basin correspond to second-order sequence cycles.

Purpose: Purpose of this paper is the theoretical formulation of elasto-dynamics behaviour of fully cracked concrete beams for two-degree of freedom (DOF) dynamical system. Such modelled system is demonstrated by a new class of two-DOF conservative, fully-nonlinear systems known as nonlinear homogeneous dynamical (NHD) systems. Design/methodology/approach: The theoretical formulation of Two-DOF dynamical system has been developed by using the fundamental concept of structural analysis. Further, the behaviour of such class of conservative dynamical system has been concluded by using MATLAB. Findings: Findings can be distinguished into two aspects. First, when subjected to service loads, reinforced concrete structures possess tension cracks. Due to load variation with time leads the breathing action (opening-closing-reopening) of existing cracks and the behaviour of such structures are nonlinearly-elastic. Second, such class of fully nonlinear dynamical system possess dependence of stiffness coefficients on nodal displacements. Research limitations/implications: The mechanism behind such class of fully nonlinear dynamical system is not yet fully explored. Practical implications: Practical implications are related to the structural response of fully cracked concrete beam to different earthquake excitation, especially to understand the response of such nonlinear homogeneous elasto-dynamical system with two-DOF concrete beam. Originality/value: Elasto-dynamics of fully cracked concrete beams.

The ultrasonic attenuation is evaluated at 300 K along [100], [110], and [111] directions for the characterization of bcc metal Ta. The size of the metal is considered in nanorange. Ultrasonic velocity, Grüneisen parameter and acoustic coupling constant that depend on second and third order elastic constants are calculated for determination of ultrasonic attenuation coefficient. Second and third order elastic constants of the bcc metal Ta at nanoscale at 300 K are also calculated starting with only two basic parameters. For the information about defects at nanoscale, the dislocation drag coefficients are calculated for the metal at different size along [100] orientation. The ultrasonic attenuation increases with the size of material as the size variation of the thermal conductivity and the thermal relaxation time. There is significant increase in the attenuation up to 150 nm.

Opis:
This present investigation uses the Taguchi and response surface methodology (RSM) for modelling and optimization of the temperature produced during bone drilling. The drilling of bone is a common procedure in orthopaedic surgery to produce hole for screw insertion to fixate the fracture devices and implants. A major problem which is encountered during such a procedure is the increase in temperature of the bone due to the plastic deformation of chips and the friction between the bone and the drill. The increase in temperature can result in thermal osteonecrosis which may delay healing or reduce the stability and strength of the fixation. The drilling experiments are conducted on poly-methyl-meth-acrylate (PMMA) (as a substitute for bone) using Taguchi’s L27 experimental design technique. The cutting parameters used are drill diameter, feed rate and cutting speed. The optimum cutting parameters for minimum temperature are determined by using S/N ratios and the effect of individual cutting parameters on temperature produced is evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA). A second-order model is established between the drilling parameters and temperature using RSM. The experimental results show that the drill diameter is the most significant drilling parameter affecting the temperature during drilling followed by cutting speed and feed, respectively. The values predicted and the values obtained from experiment are fairly close, which indicates that the developed RSM model can be effectively used to predict the temperature in orthopaedic drilling.

Opis:
This paper presents an analysis of optical properties of cubic titanium dioxide (TiO2) using Orthogonalized Linear Combinations of Atomic Orbitals (OLCAO) basis set under the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT). Many optical properties such as refractive index, extinction coefficient, reflectivity, absorption coefficient, photoconductivity, and loss coefficient have been studied and analyzed thoroughly. From the analysis of optical properties, it is seen that, cubic TiO2 supports interband transition between states. Reflectivity of pyrite structure TiO2 lies within IRvisible – UV region due to which it qualifies for coating industry. Furthermore, the results are compared with previous theoretical as well as with experimental results. It is found that DFT based simulation produces results which are close approximation to experimental results.

An aqueous titration method is described to assay the insensitive, high explosive 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB). TATB is initially quantitatively converted to the weak acid 1,3,5-trihydroxy-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (THTNB) by base catalysed hydrolysis. Subsequently THTNB is assayed by acidbase titration. TATB samples obtained from regular batch operations are assayed by this method, and the results are compared with those obtained by the total amino functional group estimation method using a modified Kjeldhal apparatus. The method is simple and has good accuracy and precision.

Opis:
A method to crystallize the thermally stable, insensitive high explosive, 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) onto the surface of another high explosive cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) crystal is described. Amination of 1,3,5-trichloro-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TCTNB) in toluene produces TATB which is precipitated by a reactive crystallization process. When the reaction is carried out in the presence of HMX, TATB crystals are found to be deposited onto the HMX crystal surface. This phenomenon was utilized to obtain in situ surface coating of HMX crystals with TATB. Both the conventional amination and the sonochemical amination methods, using dry ammonia (NH3) gas and ammonium hydroxide (NH 4 OH) respectively as the aminating agents, were studied. The coated materials were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA) and sensitivity tests. The results were compared with those of the virgin materials. Sonochemical amination provided a uniform coating of the HMX crystals. Coated HMX has shown substantial friction insensitivity gain as compared to uncoated HMX. However there is a drop in impact insensitivity in the coated materials.

Two dinosaur footprints: Eubrontes cf. giganteus and Grallator tenuis, both attributed to theropods, have been found in the Lower Jurassic Thaiat Member of the Lathi Formation at the Thaiat ridge, near Jaisalmer in western Rajasthan, India. The footprints were left in sediments of a tidal origin, located in profile a few meters above a marked transgressive/flooding surface. They show different states of preservation – the smaller Grallator tenuis represents a well-preserved concave epirelief footprint on the upper surface of a sandstone containing nerineid gastropod shells, while the bigger Eubrontes cf. giganteus footprint shows a rare state of preservation as a positive epirelief on the top of a calcareous sandstone bed, where recent erosion exposed the footprint cast by removing the mud above and around the footprint. The Thaiat ridge section has been amended in its lower part, to indicate the marked transgressive surface. Geochemical analyses and calculated weathering indices (such as CIA) show that the hinterland climate was seasonal to semi-arid during deposition of that part of the succession.

This paper describes the synthesis of ultrafine Hexogen (UF-RDX) of size <5μm by drowning-out crystallization. RDX was precipitated from acetone or dimethylformamide (DMF) solution by reducing the solvent power using either a miscible, non-aqueous antisolvent, n-hexane, or an aqueous antisolvent, water containing polyethylene glycol (PEG). Process parameters such as solvent/ antisolvent ratio, agitation, ultrasonication etc. were studied. UF-RDX was characterized for Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and sensitivity tests. In the case of the non-aqueous antisolvent, the precipitated RDX crystals were rod shaped of diameter <1 μm. For the aqueous antisolvent, oval shaped crystals (<5 μm) were precipitated. UF-RDX was found to be more sensitive to impact and less friction sensitive compared to production grade RDX (60-80 μm).
