Opis:
The current investigation is the first report of utilization of Aspergillus brasiliensis for the decolorization of melanoidin in distillery effluent. The effluent generated from alcohol distilleries is one of the most complex wastewater with a high biological oxygen demand (BOD) and other organic, inorganic, and toxic constituents. The effluent contains melanoidin, a dark brown compound, which is difficult to remediate by using conventional technologies. The disposal of spent wash in the natural environment is hazardous and can deteriorate land and water resources. The decolorization of spent wash through physical and chemical methods remains unsuitable, and the only alternative to decolorize spent wash is biological treatment. In the current study, three fungal strains were isolated from the distillery waste and screened for their ability to decolorize melanoidin. The isolate RS2 exhibited maximum decolorization of 83% and was identified as Aspergillus brasiliensis. Its optimum growth temperature was 37EC, and the maximum efficiency was recorded after 120 h of incubation. Nutritional sources were investigated for the fungi showing the maximum decolorization of melanoidin, and starch and peptone were found to be the best carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. At 1.5% starch concentration and 1.5% peptone concentration, the decolorization level attained was 87.45% and 88.74%, respectively. A. brasiliensis exhibited a high potential to decolorize melanoidin. The decolorization percentage was high, which makes this fungus a potential candidate for use at the industrial scale for the bioremediation of spent wash.

Boron stress is largely influencing the growth and yield of crop plants all around the world. In this scenario, identification of the genotypes that are tolerant to boron stress, understanding the mechanisms behind the tolerance and their application in the breeding programs can open new pathways towards dealing with this global stress. Focusing on this, we compared the differences in the physiological and biochemical responses of two hybrid maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars, boron tolerant RX 770 and boron susceptible TTM 8119. Both genotypes were subjected to four different B treatments, 0, 2.5, 25 and 50 mg L-1 B. Samples were collected before the application, after 5 days of treatments and 10 days of treatments. Root shoot lengths, dry weights, malondialdehyde (MDA), proline content and activity of antioxidant enzymes were evaluated for different harvest periods. The aim of the study was to determine the role of antioxidant enzymes in providing tolerance to maize genotypes towards B stress. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the activity of SOD, APX, POX and GR enzymes may have a significant role in providing resistance to the maize cultivar RX 770 towards B toxicity, especially at the early stages of plant development. The comparison of the physiological and biochemical mechanism of the tolerant maize genotype with the susceptible one in the presence of the boron stress may provide deep understanding useful for the development of new B tolerant maize cultivars.

Production of near net shape thin strips using vertical twin roll casting method has been studied. In a typical VTRC process, the simultaneous action of solidification and rolling makes the process quite attractive as well as complicated. An industrially popular alloy A356 has been chosen for the VTRC processing. It is challenging to identify VTRC processing parameters for the alloy to produce thin strips because of its freezing range and complex composition. In the present work processing parameters of VTRC like roll speed, roll gap, melt superheat and the interface convective heat transfer coefficient have been investigated through modelling of the process. The mathematical model was developed which simultaneously solves the heat transfer, fluid flow and solidification, using commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4. VTRC sheets of alloy A356 were produced in an experimental set up and attempts were made to correlate the microstructures of VTRC A356 alloy to that predicted from the numerical studies to validate the model.

Mechanical properties and residual stresses of friction stir welded and autogenous tungsten inert gas welded structural steel butt welds have been studied. Friction stir welding (FSW) of structural steel butt joints has been carried out by in-house prepared tungsten carbide tool with 20 mm/min welding speed and 931 rpm tool rotation. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding of the butt joints was carried out with welding current, arc voltage and the welding speed of 140 amp, 12 V and 90 mm/min respectively. Residual stress measurement in the butt welds has been carried out in weld fusion zone and heat affected zone (HAZ) by using blind hole drilling method. The magnitude of longitudinal residual stress along the weld line of TIG welded joints were observed to be higher than friction stir welded joint. In both TIG and FSW joints, the nature of longitudinal stress in the base metal was observed to be compressive whereas in HAZ was observed to be tensile. It can be stated that butt welds produced with FSW process had residual stress much lower than the autogenous TIG welds.

Opis:
Wheat production is required to double by 2050 in order to facilitate the global food assurance. Along with the rise in wheat production, improvement of the nutrient value of wheat varieties is another crucial challenge faced by wheat breeders. It is well established that more than 40% people in the world are at a risk of malnutrition caused by the deficiency of Fe, Zn and protein in their food. Numerous strategies are adopted by scientists, breeders and food industries to combat the problem. In this context, biofortificaton has become a successful method for increasing, either genetically or agronomically, the micronutrient content in crop plants. Recently, substantial progress has been made in the use of molecular marker systems and quantitative trait loci (QTL) to augment the wheat iron, zinc and protein content. Determining the role of GPC-B1 gene in controlling the iron, zinc and protein content in wheat genotypes is a promising discoveries. Although the gene is found to be associated with an elevated micronutrient content, it is also responsible for a decrease in yield. In order to simultaneously achieve both high nutrient content and elevated yield, major efforts are required to reveal the genetic control of these traits. Moreover, identifying the wheat genomic resources with an elevated nutrient content can be crucial. Employment of the next generation sequencing methods and use of molecular markers in marker assisted selection appears to be a promising approach to attaining the objective of breeding nutrient rich varieties. Combining advanced molecular biology and plant breeding techniques for wheat development is a potential strategy in achieving a healthy, ‘hidden hunger’ free world.

A bottom up approach for the preparation of Nano Aluminium Powder (NAP) using a Transferred Arc Thermal Plasma Reactor (TAPR) is described. The aluminium block is subjected to evaporation by the application of a thermal plasma. The aluminium vapour produced is rapidly quenched to room temperature resulting in crystallization of the aluminium vapour in nano-particulate form. Various process parameters, such as the plasma torch power, reactor pressure and plasma gas composition were optimized. This paper also describes the characterization of NAP by analytical methods, for the estimation of the Active Aluminium Content (AAC), Total Aluminium Content (TAC), XRD, bulk density, BET surface area, HR-TEM etc. The results are compared with those for samples prepared in other thermal plasma reactors, such as the DC Arc Plasma Reactor (DCAPR) and the RF Induction Thermal Plasma Reactor (RFITPR), and for commercially available NAP samples (ALEX, prepared by the EEW technique).

Methane is a most important greenhouse gas for planetary heating and it’s produced by methanogenic microorganisms as a metabolic byproduct and creates climate change. Methanogens are ancient organisms on earth found in anaerobic environments and methane is a key greenhouse gas concerned with methanogens. Therefore here is intense interest to writing this paper. A number of experiments have already conducted to study the methanogens in various environments such as rumen and intestinal system of animals, fresh water and marine sediments, swamps and marshes, hot springs, sludge digesters, and within anaerobic protozoa which utilize carbon dioxide in the presence of hydrogen and produce methane. The diversity of methanogens, belong to the domain Archaea and get involved in biological production of methane that catalyzes the degradation of organic compound as a part of global carbon cycle called methanogenesis. Majorly in this article we summaries the diversity of methanogens and their impact on global warming.

Nanoplanktons are ubiquitous protozoan zooplankton in a size range of 2 to 20 μm, play key ecological roles in aquatic ecosystems. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates are distributed through the continental shelf and margin area of the oceans as well as deep-sea. These organisms contribute significantly to the total living biomass within these systems, serve as the major top–down control on bacterial assemblages, and are an important source of mortality for microalgae and other heterotrophic nanoflagellates. From many recent studies, it is generally accepted that HNF is one of the most important bacterial consumers. They also function as important remineralizers of organic matter and nutrients in aquatic systems. In accordance with these important ecological roles, heterotrophic nanoflagellates have been the subject of considerable study both in the field and laboratory.

Opis:
The reaction kinetics for the preparation of ammonium dinitramide (ADN) is described. ADN is the ammonium salt of the dinitramide anion, and belongs to the group of inorganic oxidizers, mainly useful for energetic rocket propellant formulations, particularly for underwater applications. It is also a potential candidate to replace ammonium perchlorate (AP), in order to develop chlorine-free, green propellants. At HEMRL, ADN is prepared by the nitration of ammonium sulfamate (AS) using mixed acid, followed by hydrolysis, neutralization with ammonia (g) and rectification using solvent. The nitration of ammonium sulfamate (AS) is carried out at a subzero temperature of -40 ±1 °C. The yield of ADN is reliant on the formation of dinitramidic acid, an intermediate product formed during the hydrolysis step, and its stability is predominantly dependent upon the level of acidity and temperature of the reaction medium. Prior to these kinetics studies, process optimization of the nitration of ammonium sulfamate (AS) was performed and gave the final mole ratio of AS:HNO3:H2SO4. Since the nitration of AS is sensitive to temperature, the rate of reaction was studied at fixed temperatures with variation of time, keeping all of the other parameters, such as vessel volume, agitator speed, feed rate etc., constant. During these studies, predetermined quantities of ammonium sulfamate (AS) and mixed acid were allowed to react at a fixed temperature (-40 ±1 °C) for different reaction periods to generate the concentration profile of AS. Using this concentration profile, the reaction order and reaction rate constant were evaluated. In order to find the effect of temperature on the reaction rate and yield, experiments were conducted at other temperatures such as -30 and -50 °C. In the present studies, it was found that the optimum temperature of nitration is -40 ±1 °C and that the rate of reaction follows a pseudo second order process with rate constant 0.01113 (min-1)•(mol/L)-1. The reaction time evaluated for 55 to 60% conversion is about 70-80 minutes at -40 ±1 °C, based on this kinetics. The activation energy of AS nitration was found to be -4.6 kcal/mol, using the reaction kinetic data based on the temperature dependent rate equation derived from Arrhenius’s law.
