Opis:
This article describes the formation and development of the 1st-order valley network in the postglacial catchment of the Dębnica River (NW Poland). Its valley network is an example of a system of polygenetic depressions, and its 1st-order sections are comprised of denudational hollows and valleys, dissections, and erosional-denudational valleys. In the article, both landforms with no permanent flow and those nourished by groundwater and included in the river runoff network are characterised. In the course of their development, dry valleys have continued to grow in width and length, while the gradient of their bottom has decreased due to slope wash processes. In groundwater outflow zones, in turn, the modelling of their slopes indicate retreat as a result of seepage erosion and mass movements, which has led to the preservation of their convex parts and the development of a concave section at the foot, passing into the flat bottom of an alcove. In headwater alcoves, which mark the start of a valley or are inserted into older valley landforms, morphological contrasts are enhanced because of an increase in their width and depth, as well as changes in their cross-profile.

W artykule przedstawiono analizę litofacjalną osadów budujących niszę niwalną, wykształconą na południowym zboczu Pradoliny Toruńsko-Eberswaldziej i dokonano ich interpretacji genetycznej. Cechy morfometryczne formy (długość, szerokość, spadki zboczy) obok cech litofacjalnych stanowiły podstawę do zaklasyfikowania badanej niszy do grupy nisz niwalnych. Ponadto wykazano, że procesy soliflukcji i spłukiwania uznać można za dominujące w rozwoju analizowanej formy.
This paper show the result of lithofacial analysis of deposits in nivation niche that was undertaken in the south edge of the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley. The structural and textural parameters of the distinguished deposits were examined and interpretation if their genesis was made. The morphometric features of the investigated form (its length, width, gradient of slopes) and the lithofacial characteristic were the basis for its classification as a nivation niche. Besides, it was shown that solifluction and rillwash were the most important processes during its formation.

Najmłodszą część sieci drenażu stanowią dolinki erozyjno-denudacyjne i nisze źródliskowe.
Tourist assets are a set of elements of the natural or cultural environment of an area that decide about its attractiveness, have a cognitive aspect for a potential tourist, and are considered in plans of spatial development and environmental protection. Among the tourist assets of Parsęta basin are a variety of valley landscapes. A characteristic element of the natural environment of this region is a valley network consisting of several polygenetic depressions left by the glacial-periglacial cycle. The youngest sections of this drainage network are erosiondenudation valleys and headwater alcoves. Elements of valley landscapes are closely connected with the remaining components of the natural environment and are an important factor determining the geodiversity of the postglacial landscape. A well-thought-out conception of their development and accessibility, including also damage-preventing measures, can certainly enrich the region’s tourist offer.

Opis:
The objective of our in vivo study was to investigate the biocompatibility of polymer foils enriched with chitosan. Methods: three types of chitosan: non-modified(jp), and modified with montmorillonite K5 and montmorillonite K10 (p2-p3) were prepared. The in vivo studies were carried out using the rat soft tissues as a model. Small pieces of foils (2mm x 4mm)used in the experiment were sterilized by UV radiation. Next they were implanted under sterile conditions into the gluteus muscle of adult male outbred Wistar rats. Each animal received two implants: the modified foil into the right muscle, and the unmodifiedfoil used as a control into the left one. All procedures were conducted in sterile conditions and under anaesthesia. Animals were anesthetized with intraperitoneal injection of xylazine and ketamine (Biowet Puławy, Poland). Skin in the site of surgery was shaved and disinfected, and a small incision was made in the gluteus muscle. Equal pieces of foils were inserted into the such created pouch. The muscle and skin wounds were closed with 5/0 PDSII (polydioxanone) monofilament absorbable sutures (Ethicon Ltd., UK). All animals survived the surgery. No wound healing complications were observed after the surgery. The animals were maintained under standard conditions with free access to food and water. After 7, and 30 days from the surgery, at each time point 12animals were sacrificed. Tissue specimens containing the implanted materials were excised and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen. Next they were cut into 8μm thick slides in a Shandon cryostat (Thermo-Scientific, UK) at -22°C. Obtained slides were investigated through histological and histochemical methods to estimate the intensity of inflammation, production of collagen, and metabolic activity of connective and muscle tissues surrounding implant. In order to estimate the effect of the implants on the metabolic state of surrounding tissues, activities of the marker metabolic enzymes: cytochrome c oxidase, and NADH dehydrogenase were examined. The activity of acid phosphatase was used to assess the extent of inflammation around the implants. The presence and thickness of fibrous capsule around the implants were estimated on slides stained by van Gieson’s method. Results: Differences between non-modified and modified with chitosan materials were not manifested in short, 7- and 30 days series. The activities of mitochondrial oxidative enzymes, cytochrome c oxidase and NADH dehydrogenase, in muscle fibres in close proximity to the implants were slightly lower than in those further away. Probably one month was too short period to obtain the whole recovery after the surgery. At the same time the process of regeneration seemed to be intense: numerous regenerating muscle fibres infiltrated the granulation tissue around the implanted foils were observed The inflammation respone was visibly lower in 30days series compared to7days ones what indicate that the inflammation was evoked in higher degree by surgery than by the presence of the implanted materials. The fibrous capsule around foils was thin or not present at all – there were places where pieces of foils were in direct contact with the muscle tissue. After one month experiment there were no signs of degradation of materials. The experiment has been continued to compare abilities of biomaterials in long term series. Conclusion: The regeneration and enzymic activity of muscle tissue together with the lack of continuous fibrous capsule suggest that the materials used in our study are biocompatibile and are suitable for the treatment of tissue injury.

Opis:
The main challenge of this research was to functionalize the surface of poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) membranes with amphiphilic poly(2-oxazoline) (POx) in order to change PLGA chemical state and properties. Poly(2-oxazolines) are very powerful polymers, which thanks to active pendant groups can be easily functionalized with biologically active molecules or peptides. The membranes were prepared by dissolving PLGA, POx, and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, 1000 Da) in methylene chloride (DCM), followed by PEG leaching. POx molecules were preferentially adsorbed at the interface PLGA-POx-PEG thanks to affinity to both hydrophilic (PEG) and hydrophobic (PLGA) chains. The properties of the membranes were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and wettability tests. Cytocompatibility of the materials in contact with osteoblast-like MG-63 cells was studied by evaluation of cell viability (Alamar-Blue test), live/dead and phalloidin/DAPI staining. The results show that the presence of POx influenced topography of the PLGA membranes, but did not have an impact on their wettability. All membranes were fo-und cytocompatible with model osteoblasts. Presence of POx resulted in better cell adhesion as shown by microscopic studies after fluorescence staining for nuclei and cytoskeleton actin filaments. In summary, one-step phase separation process between PLGA, PEG, and POx, dissolved in DCM followed by drying and PEG leaching resulted in cytocompatible PLGA membranes with immobilised POx, which might be considered for guided tissue regeneration technique in periodontology and in bone tissue engineering.

In order to assess the effect of alternating electromagnetic and direct magnetic field on adult Helix aspersa O. F. Müller and their eggs, adults and eggs of H. aspersa maxima Taylor and H. aspersa aspersa O. F. Müller were exposed to such fields with different parameters, and the following life cycle traits were observed: condition of hibernating adults, their survival rate during hibernation and reproduction, egg mass, hatching success, growth rate of hatchlings and body mass of next generation adults. Adults were exposed to sinusoidal, alternating electromagnetic fields of 50 Hz, 100 Hz and 200 μT, and magnetic induction of 50 Hz, as well as a field of 175 μT and 10–1000 Hz (repetition period 80 minutes). Egg batches were exposed to direct magnetic fields of magnetic induction 5 μT and 10 μT and alternating electromagnetic fields of analogous induction and frequency of 50 Hz. The effects varied depending on the parameters of the fields, subspecies and life cycle stage. Adult H. aspersa maxima was more sensitive to the changes in characteristics of electromagnetic field than H. aspersa aspersa, but the two subspecies showed a similar reaction to exposing their eggs to direct or alternating magnetic field. Probably direct field had a greater selection effect compared to alternating field, removing weaker genotypes at embryonic stage; this resulted in a greater mean body mass of the next generation adults. The results are preliminary; further studies, with further modifications of parameters of the fields applied are necessary.

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men throughout the world. It is believed that changes to the structure of protein binding sites, altering its metabolism, may play an important role in carcinogenesis. Sulphur, often present in binding sites, can influence such changes through its chemical speciation. Hence there is a need for precise investigation of coordination environment of sulphur. X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy offers such possibility. Cell culture samples offer histologically well defined areas of good homogeneity, suitable for successful and reliable X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. This paper presents sulphur speciation data collected from three different human prostate cancer cell lines (PC-3, LNCaP and DU-145). Sulphur X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis was performed on K-edge structure. The spectra of cells were compared with those of cancerous tissue and with organic substances as well as inorganic compounds.

Vibrational spectroscopy has been extensively used for in vitro and in vivo investigations of degradation mechanism and kinetics of different biomedical materials as well as it has been used to characterize the crystalline and amorphous domains in bio-mineralization process. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy methods are valuable tools in the biomaterials engineering allowing to study processes occurring during their preparation. In vitro tests, where the materials are immersed in simulated body fluids and/or artificial saliva, were used to evaluate the biocompatibility of biomaterials. This kind of tests are a wide range of repeatable and reproducible methods, which are regulated by international standards for commercial use and scientific development of new materials and products. The aim of this work was to examine phase composition of materials applied in dentistry. The bioactivity of such biomaterials was studied by immersing the samples in synthetic body fluid and artificial saliva. The changes were determined by the Fourier transform infrared and Raman microspectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy. It was found that results obtained by vibrational spectroscopy show the differences between the studied samples. Chemical reactions occurring during incubation of cements in artificial saliva as well as in synthetic body fluid result in formation of phosphates which deposit on the cement surface.

Carbon nanoforms due to their unique properties can be applied in many areas also in medicine. This article presents preliminary genotoxicity studies of electrospun carbon nanofibers (ECNF). This material, apart from its numerous applications, may also be a candidate for use in medical therapy and diagnostics. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers received in the electrospinning process were carbonized and thereafter subjected to oxidation treatment (ECNF-F). Both types of fibres were analyzed with regard to genotoxic influence on the fibroblast line cells using comet assay. Additionally, comet assay experiments were conducted on biocompatible carbon nanotubes with a hydrophilic surface. The results indicate the key role of the oxidation process in the functionalization of carbon nanoparticles intended for medical purposes.

A cataract is an opacity (clouding) of the normally clear lens which develops as a result of aging, metabolic disorders, trauma or heredity. The number of patients with cataract is increasing exponentially. This disease requires surgical intervention, to remove the cloudy lens and to introduce the eye lens polymer. In this work we will present analyses of degraded parts of human lens. Experimental materials were obtained from the lens removed during surgical intervention. These biological samples were measured using Almega XR Confocal Raman spectrometer (Thermo Scientific) with an excitation source of 785 nm laser line. The Raman vibrations in the spectral region of 650-1750 cm¯¹ were analyzed. The difference spectra revealed an excess of tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine, β-sheet conformation, and molecules or molecular groups.

The infrared spectromicroscopy is a quite recent technique rapidly developing thanks to the availability of new instruments and new brilliant synchrotron radiation sources in different areas and in particular to biomedical researches. In order to achieve a diffraction limited spatial resolution in tissue samples, we performed experiments at SINBAD, the synchrotron infrared beamline of the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. We characterized the chemical composition of prostate tissue samples taken from patients affected by prostate cancer disease. Different sizes of the pinholes were considered for the measurements. In the case of prostate tissue sections the results show the possibility to determine the intensity ratio of the $CH_2$ and $CH_3$ bands set at 2930 $cm^{-1}$ and 2960 $cm^{-1}$, respectively. Experiments were also performed with a pinhole of 5 μm of diameter and the differences in both histological and chemical compositions of such samples were determined.
