    This essay is a review based on material from nineteen published interviews that focused on a diagnosis of Polish conditions after a year of the Law and Justice [Prawo i Sprawiedliwość] party’s rule. The interviews were conducted with experts—academics and journalists—by Michał Sutowski, who published these interviews as a collection.  The author demonstrates that such a collective diagnosis has major advantages in Poland’s current, rapidly changing, social conditions. Such a method is quicker than the scholarly approach to describing and explaining the state of affairs. The collection of interviews could also be a valuable source of inspiration for public debates and scholarly research in many areas, and could contain guidelines for decision-makers.

Particular attention is paid to relations between politics and the administration and between civil servants and politicians, as well as to the manner in which the administrative elite perceive their tasks and responsibilities. The article is based on in-depth interviews conducted in 2013 with 50 department directors and vice directors in Polish ministries.

    Esej podejmuje kwestie ważne dla współczesnej demokracji. Z raportów instytucji monitorujących jej stan na świecie wyłania się obraz demokracji w recesji. Stanowi on globalne tło do „lokalnych” wyników badań i analiz zawartych w pracy badaczy, których książka stanowi główny przedmiot eseju. Rahat i Kenig badają dwa główne zjawiska współczesnej demokracji: zmierzch partii politycznych i personalizację polityki. Autorzy dokumentują wyraźne zjawisko personalizacji polityki i mniej wyraźny, bo przyjmujący dwie formy, trend zmian partyjnych (upadek bądź adaptacja). Oba zjawiska są paliwem polityki populistycznej. Groźne dla demokracji trendy opisane do roku 2015 nasiliły się później w postaci „wojen kulturowych”, stanowiących zdaniem innych badaczy ślepą uliczkę dla demokracji liberalnych.
    The essay examines two of the most prominent developments in contemporary democratic politics, party change and political personalization, and the relationship between them. It presents a broad-brush, cross-national comparison of these phenomena that covers around fifty years in twenty-six countries through the use of more than twenty indicators. It demonstrates that, behind a general trend of decline of political parties, there is much variance among countries. In some, party decline is moderate or even small, which may point to adaptation to the changing environments these parties operate in. In others, parties sharply decline. Most cases fall between these two poles. A clear general trend of personalization in politics is identified, but there are large differences among countries in its magnitude and manifestations. Surprisingly, the online world seems to supply parties with an opportunity to revive. When parties decline, personalization increases. Yet these are far from being perfect zero-sum relationships, which leaves room for the possibility that other political actors may step in when parties decline and that, in some cases, personalization may not hurt parties; it may even strengthen them. Personalization is a big challenge to parties. But parties were, are, and will remain a solution to the problem of collective action, of channeling personal energies to the benefit of the group. Thus they can cope with personalization and even use it to their advantage.

    The author takes Jonathan Haidt’s The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion as her departure point. She presents Haidt’s ideas and relates them to Polish social and political divisions and Polish “worldview wars.” In her opinion, Haidt’s book is a treatise on human nature and the nature of interhuman divisions. It is also the personal story of a researcher seeking answers to the question of whether moral thinking differs from other kinds of thought. Haidt reaches his conclusions by overcoming the cognitive boundaries resulting from the liberal worldview. In the end he states that worldview disputes and culture wars have not disappeared and will not disappear in systems of liberal democracy due to their moral foundations and lack of agreement as to what is and is not subject to moral judgment. The author of the review provides an optimistic conclusion though: understanding the mechanisms behind the culture wars provides an opportunity to understand the people who conduct those wars, including in Poland.

    Monografia podejmuje problematykę dyskryminacji kobiet w medialnym dyskursie politycznym. Ramę teoretyczną pracy stanowią koncepcje Michela Foucaulta, Pierre’a Bourdieu, Ervinga Goffmana i Anthony’ego Giddensa. W badaniu pytanie nadrzędne dotyczy sposobu, w jaki artykułowane są zawodowe tożsamości polityczek w perspektywie gender w wybranych dziennikach i tygodnikach w latach 2016-2018. Pytania szczegółowe dotyczą dyskursywnych mechanizmów konstruowania zawodowych tożsamości polityczek, kategoryzacji tematów związanych z polityczną agendą feministyczną oraz odwołań do stereotypowych cech i ról płciowych w tożsamościach zawodowych polityczek. W badaniu wykorzystano strategię metodologiczną łączącą KAD, perspektywę badań feministycznych oraz elementy analizy konwersacyjnej.
    The monograph addresses the issue of discrimination against women in political media discourse. The theoretical framework of the study is based on the concepts of Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, Erving Goffman, and Anthony Giddens. The main research question is the way in which the professional identities of women politicians are articulated in the gender perspective in the Polish press discourse of selected dailies and weeklies in 2016-2018. The detailed questions formulated in the study are: 1) the discursive mechanisms of constructing the professional identities of women politicians in press interviews, 2) the categorization of topics related to the feminist political agenda, and 3) references to stereotypical gender characteristics and roles in the professional identities of women politicians. In the study, a methodological strategy combining KAD, the perspective of feminist research (FKAD) and elements of conversational analysis was employed. The structure of the work is based on two main parts: theoretical and empirical-analytical. The theoretical part is built around two key issues: the definition of gender and the role of cultural and social determinants of gender in the political discourse, while the empirical-analytical part consists of three chapters. They are methodological, analytical, and summarizing the results of the analysis. The methodological chapter describes the analytical approach adopted in the study. The analytical chapter consists of three parts. The first section describes the mechanisms by which the professional identities of women politicians are constructed in press interviews. The second section is an analysis of the categories into which topics related to feminism are included in press interviews. The purpose of the third section is to analyze how politicians create their professional identifications in the press discourse by referring to stereotypical gender characteristics and roles. The book ends with the chapter in which the conclusions were formulated and the final analysis of the topic in the context of the research questions. An integral part of this work is an appendix which describes the press texts that form the basis of empirical survey.
