Opis:
This study reports on changes in CART-like immunoreactive (CART-LI) nerve structures in the porcine descending colon during chemically driven inflammation and after axotomy. The distribution pattern of CART-LI nerve structures was studied using doublelabeling immunofluorescence technique in the circular muscle layer, myenteric (MP), outer submucous (OSP) and inner submucous plexuses (ISP) and also in the mucosal layer of the porcine descending colon in physiological conditions as well as under pathological factors. In the control animals, CART-LI perikarya have been shown to constitute 5.11% ± 0.64, 4.03% ± 1.17 and 0.05% ± 0.04 in MP, OSP and ISP, respectively. Changes in CART-immunoreactivity depended on the pathological factor and the part of the enteric nervous system (ENS) studied. Numbers of CART-LI perikarya amounted to 2.77% ± 0.64, 2.60% ± 0.36 and 0.26% ± 0.19 during chemically-induced colitis and 3.04% ± 0.88, 2.46% ± 0.8 and 0.43% ± 0.09 after axotomy in MP, OSP and ISP, respectively. Both studied pathological processes also caused an increase in the number of CART-LI nerve fibers in the circular muscle as well as in the mucosal layer.

Opis:
Diagnosing Lyme borreliosis, despite years of standardization, continues to encounter difficulties. They result primarily from the lack of a good marker of active infection and one helpful in assessing the effectiveness of the treatment. So far, a certain diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis can be made only in a patient with erythema migrans (EM). Unfortunately, this symptom occurs only in some patients. According to the recommendations of the Polish Society of Epidemiologists and Doctors of Infectious Diseases, the effectiveness of treatment is determined by the disappearance of clinical symptoms. For this reason, for years, we have been looking for highly sensitive and diagnostically specific laboratory markers. These would allow for rapid identification of fresh infections with Borrelia spirochetes as well as simple monitoring of treatment efficacy. According to many of the recently published publications, the solution to the second of the presented problems may be the measurement of IgG antibodies to the surface antigen of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. VlsE / C6.
VlsE/C6.

Opis:
The most common ichnogenus in the Peace River Canyon is Amblydactylus, a large bipedal herbivore. The morphology of the hand and footprints suggest that the tracks and trackways were made by hadrosaurs, and the ichnites might represent the earliest record of these dinosaurs. Amblydactylus tracks were made in a wide variety of depositional environments, including the mud beneath several metres of water. Juveniles were gregarious and stayed together after hatching until they were large enough to join herds of more mature animals. Hadrosaur herds appear to have walked side by side, seldom crossing paths, although there was little structure to the herds when they were in the water and/or feeding. Calculation of the walking speeds indicate that the herbivores were generally slower than the carnivores.

Mikrofalowy sensor satelity TerraSAR-X umożliwia pozyskanie całej gamy różnorodnych produktów mogących znaleźć zastosowanie w zarządzaniu kryzysowym, kartografii, hydrologii, rolnictwie, leśnictwie i geologii.
TerraSAR-X, a German satellite, works in three modes: SpotLight (SL), StripMap (SM), and ScanSAR (SS) with maximum azimuth resolutions of 1, 3, and 16 m, respectively. The images are distributed both in raw a raw or a georeferenced format. Due to the variety of products, it has been claimed that the geometry of those images should be investigated. The first part of the paper presents verification of geometric precision of geocoded products generated by the distributor. Images at the EEC (Enhanced Ellipsoid Corrected) and GEC (Geocoded Ellipsoid Corrected) levels were examined. The EEC product affected by the terrain heights, while the GEC product is affected by the mean height of terrain. Two test areas were selected: one in Kozienice, with SM mode images and the other in Wroclaw, with SL images. Control points were collected on reference orthophotomaps from the IRS-P6 satellite and with an ADS-40 airborne digital camera. The results showed the GEC product to have a low accuracy, while the EEC products are of a high accuracy (RMS error of 3-4 pixels). The second part of the paper presents orthorectification results for the Wroclaw test area.A raw image in the SSC format was used. It was shown that, with 10 control points and a SAR model correction both in azimuth and slant range direction, the accuracy of 2 pixels can be achieved. Verification of TerraSAR-X geometry accuracy formed a part of a project carried out in cooperation with the Geosystems Polska, the distributor of TerraSAR-X images from Poland. All the work was conducted in the ErdasImagine environment.

Background: Experiencing a myocardial infarction threatens the health and life of the patient; therefore, it can be perceived as a traumatic event. Indeed, myocardial infarction may result in negative consequences, including symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is also possible to experience positive effects from traumatic events, which is expressed as posttraumatic growth. Personality characteristics, including type D (i.e., distressed) personality, are among several factors that have been shown determine the occurrence of negative and positive consequences after exposure to trauma. Aim of the study: The aim of the present study was to establish the role of distressed personality in the occurrence of negative and positive effects of trauma resulting from myocardial infarction. Material and methods: The study included a total of 80 patients after myocardial infarction. Sixty-three patients aged 43–85 years (M=67, SD=10.76) were included in the final analysis. The majority of respondents were men (61.9%). Patients completed a survey with three standardized measurement tools: the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and the Type D Scale (DS-14). Results: Negative affectivity was positively associated with PTSD symptoms, and this association was strongest for negative changes in cognition or mood. Social inhibition was not associated with PTSD symptoms, except for increased arousal and reactivity. Both dimensions of type D personality were positively related to one factor of posttraumatic growth: changes in the spiritual sphere. Conclusions: Reducing the severity of negative affectivity may decrease PTSD symptoms and thus contribute to improved psychosocial functioning among patients who have experienced myocardial infarction.

Opis:
The aim of this research was to provide values for different material properties considered in either traditional or more recent numerical silo design methods. Different samples of granular agricultural materials commonly stored in silos were tested. Common geotechnical devices have been used in order to make the replications easier. Based on these experiments it was determined that the different material properties were not affected by the test velocity, except in the case of Poisson ratio. From a practical point of view, the test velocity correlates well with the sliding velocity of grain during discharge. The values obtained for material properties considered in traditional silo design methods were similar to those reported by other authors. No significant differences were observed in the results obtained when using either the square shear box or the circular shear cell. The same conclusion was reached when comparing the results from direct shear tests with preconsolidated and unconsolidated samples. This means that simplified devices and procedures can be used in agricultural grains against other products. Finally, a table with the recommended values for the different parameters determined for each sample tested was provided in this work.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to estimate the level of annual and daily growth of lawn plant height of Kentucky bluegrass cultivars depending on the intensity of their utilization and to group bluegrass cultivars into slowly and quickly growing. The basis for the study was the results of cultivar tests conducted by COBORU in 1998-2004 at three Experimental Stations of Cultivar Testing – Lisewo (54°06’ N; 18°50’ E), Łopuszna (49°29’ N; 20°08’ E) and Pawłowice (50°28’ N; 18°29’ E). Two systems of utilization were applied: moderately intensive (Relaks) and extensive (Park). At extensive utilization, annual plant growth values of all the tested cultivars were smaller by 20-30 cm, and average daily growth values by 0.14 cm smaller than with their intensive utilization. The slowly growing cultivars were Alicia, America, Baron, Bartender, Broadway, Limousine, NIB398, Orfeo, RAH498, Samoa and Qantum Leap, and quickly growing – Gol, Mardona, Haga, Sobra and Evora. At the utilization system Relaks, daily growth values of slowly growing cultivars were on average by 25% smaller, and at the Park system, by 35% smaller than those of quickly growing cultivars.
Podstawę opracowania stanowiły wyniki doświadczeń odmianowych prowadzonych przez COBORU w latach 1998-2004 w trzech Stacjach Doświadczalnych Oceny Odmian – Lisewie (54°06’ N; 18°50’ E), Łopusznej (49°29’ N; 20°08’ E) i Pawłowicach (50°28’ N; 18°29’ E). Stosowano dwa sposoby użytkowania: umiarkowanie intensywny (Relaks) i ekstensywny (Park). Odmianami wolno odrastającymi były Alicia, America, Baron, Bartender, Broadway, Limousine, NIB398, Orfeo, RAH498, Samoa i Qantum Leap, a szybko odrastającymi – Gol, Mardona, Haga, Sobra i Evora. The littoral fauna of Maltese sandy and shingle beaches is generally regarded as impoverished and consequently of little conservation interest. The fauna of three sandy and three shingle beaches was systematically sampled by coring, standardised searching and pitfall traps. Diversity and population density were highest at the surface for sandy beaches, but were highest below the surface for shingle. The two beach types had distinct suites of species and individual beaches were faunistically distinct. Maltese sandy and shingle beaches are of conservation importance for their habitat-restricted species, some of which have limited local and regional distributions, and are internationally protected.

Opis:
Premaxillary tooth count tends to be stable amongst toothed dinosaurs, and most theropods have four teeth in each premaxilla. Only one case of bilaterally asymmetric variation is known in theropod premaxillary dentition, and there is no record of ontogenetic or individual variation in premaxillary tooth count. Based on these observations, a tyrannosaurid left premaxilla with three teeth (TMP 2007.20.124) is an interesting deviation and represents an unusual individual of Daspletosaurus sp. with a developmental abnormality. The lower number of teeth is coupled with relatively larger alveoli, each of which is capable of hosting a larger than normal tooth. This indicates that tooth size and dental count vary inversely, and instances of reduction in tooth count may arise from selection for increased tooth size. On the other hand, the conservative number of premaxillary teeth in most theropods implies strong developmental constraints and a functional trade−off between the dimensions of the premaxillary alveolar margin and the size of the teeth. In light of recent advances in the study of tooth morphogenesis, tooth count is a function of two parameters: dimensions of an odontogenic field for a tooth series, and dimensions of tooth positions. A probable developmental cause for the low tooth count of TMP 2007.20.124 is that the dimensions of the alveoli expanded by approximately a third during tooth morphogenesis. Numerical traits such as tooth count are difficult to treat in a phylogenetic analysis. When formulating a phylogenetic character, a potential alternative to simply counting is to rely on the morphological signature for developmental parameters that control the number of the element in question.

Opis:
The Unenlagiinae is a clade of Gondwanan dromaeosaurid theropods mainly known from incomplete skeletal material. The group includes two recently discovered theropods, Buitreraptor and Austroraptor, from which cranial remains are available with in situ maxillary and dentary teeth, thus allowing the study of tooth morphology. Among the derived traits that diagnose the dentition of unenlagiines are: (i) high tooth count, (ii) small size of individual teeth when compared with skull height, (iii) absence of denticles and carinae, and (iv) presence of longitudinal grooves on the tooth crown. This suite of dental characteristics, shared between Buitreraptor and Austroraptor, can be considered as diagnostic of the Unenlagiinae or, at least, a more exclusive clade within the group. The teeth of Buitreraptor exhibit a remarkable labiolingual compression, whereas Austroraptor possesses more conical teeth, probably respective autapomorphic features. On one hand, these dental morphologies differ from those observed in most Laurasian dromaeosaurids and, for instance, could be considered as further proof of the purported vicariant evolution of the lineage on the southern continents. On the other hand, the morphological similarities (e.g., absence of denticles) between the teeth of unenlagiines and other theropod lineages, including Mesozoic birds and ornithomimosaurs, can be considered as the result of parallel trends related to dental reduction.

Opis:
Background: Coronary heart disease is one of the most common causes of hospitalization and premature deaths in Europe. ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has been a clinical problem for many years, particularly in the aspect of choosing the optimal treatment method. The success of treatment is determined by many factors, including risk factors for ischemic heart disease, time between onset of symptoms and initiation of treatment, number and degree of coronary stenosis, and many more. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to identify risk factors for ischemic heart disease affecting the success of STEMI patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Material and methods: A retrospective analysis was carried out on data from medical records of patients treated in the Department of Acute Coronary Syndromes of St. Hedvig Provincial Hospital No. 2 in Rzeszow between 2009 and 2014. The research tool used in this paper was the author’s questionnaire. A total of 508 patients with STEMI myocardial infarction treated in the Department of Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) between 2009 and 2013 were included in the analysis. The inclusion criteria were the complete and clear files of patient treatment in the ACS department between 2009 and 2013 due to acute coronary syndrome treated invasively by the PCI method. Results: Majority of the study group, 334 subjects, (65.7%) had hypertension. The most common risk factors for ischemic heart disease were found to be dyslipidemia in 176 subjects (34.6%) and smoking in 163 subjects (32.1%). This paper presents the results of the analysis of the success of treatment in relation to risk factors for ischemic heart disease. There was a statistically significant relationship between hypertension and successful treatment (p=0.0425). More cases in which treatment was unsuccessful were observed in the group of patients who had no previous treatment for lipid disorders (20.2% vs. 4.0%) (p = 0.0000). Significantly more cases of treatment failure were found among people who denied smoking (17.4% vs. 8.6%; p = 0.0087). Conclusions: Among the analyzed behavioral and somatic risk factors for failure in patients subjected to treatment were untreated hypertension, hyperlipidemia and a negative history of cigarette smoking.

New specimens of Elmisaurus rarus from the Upper Cretaceous of Mongolia (Nemegt Formation) preserve bones not previously found in “elmisaurids” that help elucidate their relationships to Leptorhynchos elegans and other oviraptorosaurs. Elmisaurus rarus and the North American Leptorhynchos elegans are known from numerous but incomplete specimens that are closely related to, but nevertheless clearly distinguished from, Chirostenotes pergracilis and Epichirostenotes curriei. These specimens include the first known cranial bone attributed to Elmisaurus, the frontal, which clearly shows this animal had a cranial crest (most of which would have been formed by the nasal bones). The first vertebrae, scapula, femora, and tibiae from Elmisaurus are also described. The Elmisaurinae can be distinguished from the Caenagnathinae by the coossification of the tarsometatarsus and smaller size at maturity. Examination of oviraptorosaur hindlimbs reveals four distinct morphotypes, possibly attributable to paleoecological differences.

Isolated teeth from vertebrate microfossil localities often provide unique information on the biodiversity of ancient ecosystems that might otherwise remain unrecognized. Microfossil sampling is a particularly valuable tool for documenting taxa that are poorly represented in macrofossil surveys due to small body size, fragile skeletal structure, or relatively low ecosystem abundance. Because biodiversity patterns in the late Maastrichtian of North American are the primary data for a broad array of studies regarding non-avian dinosaur extinction in the terminal Cretaceous, intensive sampling on multiple scales is critical to understanding the nature of this event. We address theropod biodiversity in the Maastrichtian by examining teeth collected from the Hell Creek Formation locality that yielded FMNH PR 2081 (the Tyrannosaurus rex specimen “Sue”). Eight morphotypes (three previously undocumented) are identified in the sample, representing Tyrannosauridae, Dromaeosauridae, Troodontidae, and Avialae. Noticeably absent are teeth attributed to the morphotypes Richardoestesia and Paronychodon. Morphometric comparison to dromaeosaurid teeth from multiple Hell Creek and Lance formations microsites reveals two unique dromaeosaurid morphotypes bearing finer distal denticles than present on teeth of similar size, and also differences in crown shape in at least one of these. These findings suggest more dromaeosaurid taxa, and a higher Maastrichtian biodiversity, than previously appreciated.

New specimens from Canada confirm the presence of elmisaurines in North America and shed light on the relationship of Leptorhynchos elegans to Mongolian forms. These specimens have hindlimb elements previously unknown from elmisaurines in the Dinosaur Park Formation, including tibiae and pedal phalanges. Metatarsal anatomy is sufficiently different to merit a generic distinction from Elmisaurus rarus, and both can be distinguished from Caenagnathus collinsi and Chirostenotes pergracilis. Differences between these taxa include body size, degree of coossification of the tarsometatarsus, and development of cruciate ridges of the metatarsal III. Histological analysis confirms that these differences are not correlated with ontogenetic age of the specimens. The results support the informal separation of caenagnathids based on metatarsal structure, and allow comments on paleobiological differences between caenagnathids and oviraptorids.

Intestinal microflora is found at approximately 10⁴ bacteria per ml of intestinal fluid. Although this ecosystem is very diverse with dynamic changes taking place within it, there is a certain stability in the type and number of species, referred to as the core microbiome, found in 95% of the human population. Genetic variation of microorganisms is relatively small, and their functions are strictly defined and highly conservative. The microbiome exists symbiotically with the host, protecting it against colonization by pathogenic microorganisms, providing essential metabolites, and stimulating the immune system. Colonization begins prenatally and its development is greatly influenced by the course of pregnancy, method of delivery, food supplied to the child during the first moments of life, and post-birth environment. The appropriate intestinal microflora composition is a key determinant of health and homeostasis, and any intestinal dysbiosis can be associated later in life with the development of obesity, diabetes, allergies or cancer. Due to the increasing number of hospitalised pregnancies and deliveries, affecting the intestinal microflora of a newborn, efforts are being made to minimize this process and restore the newborn’s microbiome. The use of the Vaginal seeding procedure raises up great hopes, but also some fears concerning its safety. Some very simple and most natural factors have been recently also appreciated and promoted, such as breastfeeding or direct contact of the baby’s skin with the mother’s skin, which are allies to probiotic bacteria. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance of microbial colonization of the human body and to present the latest and most effective procedures that are designed to correct the existing dysbiosis or to reduce the risk of its occurrence. The literature for the compilation of this study has been obtained from databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science.

This paper presents the polyharmonic modelling of synchronous generator (SG) in machine variables. The simple geometry and windings physical layout has been used for inductance calculations of a salient-pole SG. The main advantage of this model is the ease of describing an autonomous power generation system (APGS) in terms of its topology and thus providing effective analysis at the static and dynamic states, both for normal and fault operations. Particularly, the model can be used to obtain SG voltage and currents for their more extensive harmonic analysis. Comparison of the simulation and measurement results has shown their good agreement, i.e., validating the elaborated polyharmonic model of SG.

Opis:
Oviraptorosaur caudal osteology is unique among theropods and is characterized by posteriorly persistent and exceptionally wide transverse processes, anteroposteriorly short centra, and a high degree of flexibility across the pre-pygostyle vertebral series. Three-dimensional digital muscle reconstructions reveal that, while oviraptorosaur tails were reduced in length relative to the tails of other theropods, they were muscularly robust. Despite overall caudal length reduction, the relative size of the M. caudofemoralis in most oviraptorosaurs was comparable with those of other non-avian theropods. The discovery of a second Nomingia specimen with a pygostyle confirms that the fused terminal vertebrae of the type specimen were not an abnormality. New evidence shows that pygostyles were also present in the oviraptorosaurs Citipati and Conchoraptor. Based on the observed osteological morphology and inferred muscle morphology, along with the recognition that many members of the group probably sported broad tail-feather fans, it is postulated that oviraptorosaur tails were uniquely adapted to serve as dynamic intraspecific display structures. Similarities, including a reduced vertebral series and a terminal pygostyle, between the tails of oviraptorosaurs and the tails of theropods widely accepted as basal members of the Avialae, appear to be convergences.

Presented work is aimed at investigating potential correlations between remote sensing vegetation indices and local ant populations. Research was conducted in summer of 2017 in Wigry National Park in two types of forest habitats: coniferous (Serratulo-Pinetum) and deciduous (Tilio-Carpinetum). NDVI and MCARI2 vegetation indices were measured with the use of a drone and yielded comparable correlations with ant-related quantities. We determined that the presence of ants from Formica group is positively correlated with vegetation indices, while the correlation between Myrmica and Lasius ants and vegetation indices is more complex.

The construction of a homing tour is known to be NP-complete. On the other hand, the Euler formula puts su cient restrictions on plane graphs that one should be able to assert the existence of such tours in some cases; in particular we focus on split Euler tours (SETs) in 3-connected, 4-regular, planar graphs (tfps). An Euler tour S in a graph G is a SET if there is a vertex v (called a half vertex of S) such that the longest portion of the tour between successive visits to v is exactly half the number of edges of G. Among other results, we establish that every tfp G having a SET S in which every vertex of G is a half vertex of S can be transformed to another tfp G′ having a SET S′ in which every vertex of G′ is a half vertex of S′ and G′ has at most one point having a face configuration of a particular class. The various results rely heavily on the structure of such graphs as determined by the Euler formula and on the construction of tfps from the octahedron. We also construct a 2-connected 4-regular planar graph that does not have a SET.

The Gobi Desert is famous for providing one of the worlds best preserved Cretaceous terrestrial faunas, including dinosaurs and mammals. Beginning with the Central Asiatic Expeditions in the 1920s, through the Polish−Mongolian Expeditions in the 1960s–1970s, Soviet−Mongolian Expeditions in 1970s, and finally the Mongolian Academy−American Museum Expeditions in the 1990s–2000s, the number of complete skulls (see Kielan−Jaworowska et al. 2000 for review) of Cretaceous mammals often associated with postcranial skeletons, found in Mongolia increased to several hundred. In addition to these professional expeditions, there have been other types of trips to Mongolia, also aimed at collecting fossils. The Nomadic Expeditions Company in USA organizes one of these, and has made trips to Mongolia since 1996. During the 1999 Nomadic Expedition, a skull associated with parts of the postcranial skeleton of the multituberculate mammal Catopsbaatar catopsaloides was found. The specimen is more complete than others previously known of this species and brings new data on multituberculate anatomy and ontogenetic variation. In this note we discuss the new data on the structure of C. catopsaloides; the details of its anatomy will be described in subsequent papers by the two first authors.

The dinosaur record in the South Pyrenees Basin is diverse and rich. A total of 142 theropod teeth were studied for this paper, which constitutes one of the richest samples for these remains in Europe. Eight upper Campanian to upper Maastrichtian outcrops from the Pyrenees produced six non-avian theropod taxa (Theropoda indet., Coelurosauria indet., ?Richardoestesia, ?Dromaeosauridae indet., ?Pyroraptor olympius, ?Paronychodon). These six taxa are added to two previously described theropods (a Richardoestesia-like form and a possible ornithomimosaurid), indicating that there was considerable theropod diversity on the Iberian Peninsula during the Late Cretaceous.

Gross tooth morphology and serration morphology were examined to determine a quantifiable method for classifying tyrannosaurid tooth crowns from western North America. From the examination of teeth in jaws, tyrannosaurid teeth could be qualitatively assigned to one of five types based on the cross−sectional shape of the base of the tooth and characteristics of the mesial carina. A principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that much of the variance in tooth shape was a result of isometry, but some gross morphological variables exhibited strong positive allometry. Non−size associated factors were also important in determining tooth shape, particularly when data on denticle dimensions were considered in the analysis. While PCA identified important factors in variation, PCA ordination plots did not cluster the teeth into distinct, separate groupings based on taxon or bone of origin. The group classification functions determined by discriminant analysis, though not universally successful for classifying unidentified isolated teeth of all tyrannosaurids, do identify bone of origin of adult Albertosaurus, Daspletosaurus, and Gorgosaurus teeth at a statistically acceptable level.

Many sauropod ghost lineages cross the Middle Jurassic, indicating a time interval that requires increased sampling. A wide taxonomic spectrum of sauropodomorphs is known from the Middle Jurassic of China, but the braincase of a new sauropod, named here Nebulasaurus taito gen. et sp. nov., is distinct. Nebulasaurus is sister taxon to Spinophorosaurus from the Middle Jurassic of Africa and represents a clade of basal eusauropods previously unknown from Asia. The revised faunal list indicates dramatic transitions in sauropodomorph faunas from the Jurassic to Cretaceous of Asia; these are consistent with geographic isolation of Asia through the Late Jurassic. Non-sauropod sauropodomorphs, non-mamenchisaurid eusauropods (including basal macronarians), and mamenchisaurids successively replaced previous grades through the Jurassic, and titanosauriforms excluded all other sauropod lineages across the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary.

Opis:
Structure of the manus and pes has long been a source of confusion in ankylosaurs, owing to the imperfect preservation or complete lack of these parts of the skeletons in most specimens, and the fact that many species appear to have undergone a reduction in numbers of digits and phalanges. New specimens of Pinacosaurusfrom Alag Teeg in Mongolia confirm that the phalangeal formula of the manus is 2−3−3−3−2. However, there are only three toes in the pes, which has a phalangeal formula of X−3−3/4−3/4−X. Importantly, the number of phalanges in the third and fourth pedal digits can vary between either three or four per digit, even within the same specimen. The Alag Teeg site has yielded as many as a hundred skeletons of the ankylosaur Pinacosaurus, most of which were immature when they died. Each skeleton is preserved in an upright standing position, with the bones of the lower limbs often in articulation. The remainder of the skeleton, including the upper parts of the limbs, is generally disarticulated and somewhat scattered. Based on the presence of large numbers of juvenile Pinacosaurus specimens at Alag Teeg, as well as other Djadokhta−age sites (Ukhaa Tolgod in Mongolia, Bayan Mandahu in China), it seems juvenile Pinacosaurus were probably gregarious.

In this research, a comparative analysis of results of investigations involving different human populations, in terms of a relation between the oral cavity health and the species composition of mouth microbiota is reported. The purpose of this analysis was to identify and assess microorganisms that could cause health complications in patients with neoplasm requiring dental problem-related surgical management. The patients with the oral cancer surgically treated and those without neoplasm were assessed for their oral health: status of teeth, gingiva, periodontium, and occurrence of inflammatory processes. From each patient, microorganisms isolated of periodontium, dental plaque, and dental pocket swabs were identified in wet and stained microscopic preparations; standard microbiology in vitro techniques were also applied to determine the fungal and bacterial strains. The comparative analysis of results of direct microscopic examinations and in vitro cultures assessment indicated significant differences in prevalences of fungi, parasitic oral protozoans and bacteriae in particular patient’s groups. Yeast-like fungi belonging to Candida genus, mostly of C. albicans group, were identified in 93.75% patients with the oral cancer, while in 25% of individuals assessed without neoplasm. E. gingivalis amoebae were only found in 12.5% patients with the serious disease; no trichomonads were detected in all patients analyzed. Among bacteria species, potentially pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae were found in the patients with oral cancer. The pronounced shift in the microbiota species composition in the patients who needed prolonged treatment due to oral cavity cancer, compared to other generally healthy persons has been showed in this analysis.

The retrospective analysis of data on oral cavity clinical status in relation to microbiota species composition is presented. The research regards patients of different age, with and without congenital malformation, pretreatment assessed for occurrence of pathological changes in the masticatory system. Samples of the swabs collected from each patient (from dental plaque, periodontium and dental pockets) were used for identification of oral protozoans in wet slides and stained preparations; additionally, transmission electron microscope examination was performed. The material was used for in vitro cultures to identify bacteria strains. Clinically, intensity of tissue deteriorations was higher in patients with a congenital disease. Alive Trichomonas tenax and Entamoeba gingivalis, species with confirmed pathogenic impact on oral cavity and neighboring structures, were detected with higher prevalence in older patients. Enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, various Enterobacteriaceae were more frequently detected in patients with somatic and mental retardations; in mouths of those patients, Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa opportunistic strains occurred. Masticatory system abnormalities favor colonization of oral cavity by exogenous species and dissemination of infections, especially dangerous for patients with congenital diseases. Oral microbiota assessment and preventive measures may be helpful to avoid subsequent peri-surgery complications.

A Mongolian ankylosaurid specimen identified as Tarchia gigantea is an articulated skeleton including dorsal ribs, the sacrum, a nearly complete caudal series, and in situ osteoderms. The tail is the longest complete tail of any known ankylosaurid. Remarkably, the specimen is also the first Mongolian ankylosaurid that preserves impressions of the keratinous scales overlying the bony osteoderms. This specimen provides new information on the shape, texture, and ar− rangement of osteoderms. Large flat, keeled osteoderms are found over the pelvis, and osteoderms along the tail include large keeled osteoderms, elongate osteoderms lacking distinct apices, and medium−sized, oval osteoderms. The specimen differs in some respects from other Tarchia gigantea specimens, including the morphology of the neural spines of the tail club handle and several of the largest osteoderms.

Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. W rejonach „A” i „B” przebadano surowice, odpowiednio 100 i 98 mieszkańców, surowice 32 i 41 świń oraz surowice 41 i 40 krów – na obecność przeciwciał anty- Leptospira, wykorzystując test aglutynacji mikroskopowej (MAT). We wskazanych rejonach przebadano również, odpowiednio 40 i 64 próbki wody, 40 i 68 próbek gleby, próbki organów 30 i 30 drobnych ssaków należących do 5 i 6 gatunków, a także 540 i 296 kleszczy Ixodes ricinus – na obecność DNA Leptospira; badanie przeprowadzono testem nested-PCR. Wyniki. Obecność DNA Leptospira spp. wykryto u 15,6% kleszczy I. ricinus z rejonu „A” w porównaniu z 1,4% w rejonie „B”, a różnica ta okazała się wysoce znamienna (P<0,0001). DNA Leptospira spp. zawierało 5% próbek wody z rejonu „A”, podczas gdy wszystkie próbki wody z rejonu „B” oraz wszystkie próbki gleby z rejonów „A” i „B” były ujemne. Wnioski.
Background. Leptospirosis, caused by Leptospira spirochetes, is considered the most widespread zoonosis worldwide. Morbidity may be increased by natural disasters such as floods or typhoons. Aim of the study. The aim of the present study was to investigate the epidemiological situation of leptospirosis in the Lublin Region (Eastern Poland) with consideration of the effects of flooding by the Vistula River, by investigating human population and various elements of the environment for the presence of Leptospira in two areas: ‘Area A’ exposed to flooding, and ‘Area B’ not exposed to flooding. Material and Methods. In the Areas A and B, sera of 100 and 98 inhabitants, sera of 32 and 41 pigs and sera of 41 and 40 cows were examined, respectively, for the presence of anti-Leptospira antibodies by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), as well as 40 and 64 samples of water, 40 and 68 samples of soil, organ samples of 30 and 30 small mammals from 5 and 6 species, and 540 and 296 Ixodes ricinus ticks, respectively – for the presence of Leptospira DNA by the nested-PCR test. Results. The presence of anti-Leptospira antibodies was found in 3% of inhabitants of Area A and in 9.2% of Area B; this difference was statistically insignificant. The frequency of anti-Leptospira antibodies was higher in pigs and cows from Area A, compared to area B (34.4% vs. 4.9%, and 26.8% vs. 15.0%, respectively), while in the case of pigs the difference was significant (P=0.0015). Also, the titers of positive reactions were higher in Area A, compared to Area B, and for cows the difference was significant (P=0.0128). The presence of Leptospira DNA was found in 20% of small mammals from Area A, and in 30% from Area B; this difference being insignificant; however, in both cases the frequency of positive results was high, compared to the data from literature. The great majority of positive results were obtained in striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius). The presence of Leptospira DNA was detected in 15.6% of I. ricinus ticks from Area A, compared to 1.4% in Area B, and the difference was highly significant (P<0.0001). 5% of water samples from Area A contained Leptospira DNA, whereas all water samples from Area B, and all soil samples from Areas A and B were negative. Conclusions. • The infections with Leptospira spirochetes among the rural population inhabiting the areas of the Lublin Region exposed to floods by the Vistula River do not occur with a higher frequency, compared to the areas not exposed to floods. • The potential sources of infection with Leptospira in the areas exposed to flooding are animals: ticks Ixodes ricinus, domestic animals (pigs, cows), and striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius). • Detection of Leptospira spp. DNA in 5% of water samples in the areas exposed to floods, with negative results in control areas, seems to confirm a possible role of water in spreading leptospirosis. • Soil does not constitute any significant risk of infection in the areas exposed to flooding.

Opis:
Herein we describe deinonychosaurian (Dinosauria: Theropoda) tracks in the Lower Cretaceous Hekou Group at sites I and II of Liujiaxia Dinosaur National Geopark, Gansu Province, China. The site preserves 71 didactyl tracks, the largest concentration of deinonychosaurian tracks in Asia. The tracks pertain to a new dromaeopodid ichnospecies: Dromaeosauripus yongjingensis ichnosp. nov., which is diagnosed by: a digital pad formula of x−1−3−4−x and a mean divarication angle between digits III and IV of 19°, and having the proximal portion of digit II contacting the anterior margin of a large, rounded metatarsophalangeal pad. Six Dromaeosauripustrackways from site II comprise at least two, and possibly three, turning trackways in which the track maker(s) turned without slowing down. None of the Dromaeosauripus trackways are parallel or closely spaced, suggesting that they were made by solitary track makers. Estimates of dromaeopodid track−maker sizes are between 61–300 cm, well within the size range established by body fossils of both dromaeosaurids and troodontids.

Pistacia vera L., whose edible fruit is the pistachio, is an economically important crop. It is cultivated worldwide and over 50 different varieties have been described attending to morphological and phenological characteristics. The selection of a suitable cultivar may affect the profitability of the orchards, and thus requires careful consideration for any given region. The type and concentration of nutrients taken up by the plant affect its development and eventually the quality and quantity of the fruits. It is a matter of discussion whether all varieties have the same capacity to absorb nutrients. In order to clarify this aspect, in this study the efficiency of nutrient uptake has been assessed for five pistachio varieties: three males (M38, G1, and Mateur), and two females (Batoury, and Joley), by measuring the concentration of 30 chemical elements in leaves by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and C/N micro-elemental analyses. Data were subjected to a non-parametric Friedman test, using a series of Wilcoxon Rank Sum test with a Bonferroni correction as post hocs. Our findings demonstrate that all these varieties have an equal uptake capacity for Al, Cr, Cu, K, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, S, Sr, Ti, Tl, Zn, N, B, Fe, Mg, Na, and V. No differences related to the gender of the plants were detected. Only Mateur exhibited significantly higher levels of Ca and lower levels of C. Stock plants from an experimental plot were used as material. These plants are not used for productive purposes, and flowering and fruiting are partially restricted by removing potential nutrient-demanding structures. These findings support the contention that the presence/absence of such organs has more influence on the nutrient uptake than does the variety itself.
